how to draw faces
So awesome human being @smallpumpkinboi​ posted an wonderful WIP sketch earlier and said ‘Can someone please explain to my why, everytime, without fail, my eyes are always too high??’ I offered to give my two cents, and asked if it was ok for me to make it a public post- they said yes :) This ended up going long- but hopefully it’ll be handy for people. :D 
BEFORE YOU DRAW- some tips to keep in mind:
1) do some warm ups! (sketches and drawing exercises)  yup! artists need warm-ups just like athletes! :D)
2) Get the structure drawn first!  don’t get into details, shading, or color until you have the structure DRAWN (Aka, the major features are all placed, the pose is in place etc)
So let’s look at some heads, y’all! :D
what’s with that ball so many people draw before they do a portrait? You know the one:

In and of itself it’s confusing. It’s like,  Faces aren’t shaped like this. Where am I supposed to put the eyes? The mouth? The nose??  HERE ARE SOME HEADS I VERY QUICKLY DREW USING THE ‘CIRCLE METHOD’

Wait a moment! Do you see what’s going on? Do you see how I messed up? OH NOOOO - I wasn’t using the circle method consistently! Look at those proportions!!! Look at the placements! There’s all using different ratios!

Oh my gosh! What do I do to fix this? How can I do it the same every time? Which is the RIGHT way to draw a face?
Want to know how to draw using the PERFECT ratio?
Here’s THE secret:
THERE IS NO ‘PERFECT RATIO’

Depending on the face shape, depending on the style of drawing, age of the character being drawn etc. you might change up the placement of eyes, noses, mouths etc. But the one thing you need to know is:
Faces and heads are all different.
Some people have tiny little squished faces, some people have LONG faces. They’re all different.

‘AHHHHH!’ HILL- YOU ARE MAKING THIS MORE CONFUSING FOR ME!!!’
I know! I’m sorry! But wait wait wait. I’m getting to stuff that’ll help. I swear!
Even though there’s ‘not a perfect ratio’ there are ratios that play into certain styles better.
Cartoons, especially, can be all over the place on how they do ratios. Like, look at Prince of Egypt and how they place the eyes SUPER high on heads- vs, like, Disney- who likes to place eyes for heads super low (they love to give women the proportions of doe-eyed children.)

A ratio I generally like is what I use for REALISM/REALISTICALLY PROPORTIONED PEOPLE

Here I’ll be going into a general breakdown of the proportions for an ADULT head.  
Remember- every face is different!!! There is ENDLESS variety to faces. The variety can and does affect every feature- from eyelids, to noses, to brows, to foreheads etc.
These varietes vary person to person, and also there are varieties and commonalities you see more often in certain populations- be it race, sex, or ethnicity. 
I am not giving examples of ALL these varieties here today as this is just a general guide to proportion. However if anyone wants me to go more in depth on this topic I’m happy to. :D Let me know in the comments.

WE TEND TO THINK ABOUT DRAWINGS IN A 2-D WAY
Which makes sense. It’s a 2-D drawing!
BUT HEADS ARE 3-D
Heads are a three-dimensional object. When it’s a straight on portrait like above you can get away with not thinking about it as much. A bit of shading here and there- and bam! You drew a face! :D 
 But what about when that dang head has the AUDACITY to TURN?
All of a sudden it’s a whole lot harder to draw.

DON’T BE SCARED. They aren’t different, they have just TURNED.

Ron here has slightly different proportions to Hermione up Above.

He has a longer face, longer nose, a bigger more defined jaw, slightly lower brows, thinner lips  etc.(
I made the ‘circles’ the same size- but in reality- his head is bigger than hers. REMEMBER!!! People have different size heads!)
But even with all that, a ton of his proportions are the same as hers.
When you turn a head, the main things people forget to take into account are:

And some are getting FORESHORTENED- aka- they look all SQUISHED AND SMALL.

a lot of the time with my ‘cartoony lines’ this little sliver disappears altogether.
Even though there’s suddenly foreshortening happening to the features of the face
YOU CAN SUDDENLY SEE SOME THINGS BETTER

BROW BONE

EYELIDS, BROW BONES AND BROWS ARE VERY VERY VARIABLE FOR PEOPLE- LOOK CLOSELY AT IMAGES OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE OF VARYING RACES, GENDERS, SEXES ETC.
Again, this is just a general guide.
So now we’re going to look at  @smallpumpkinboi​ ‘s awesome WIP piece
(gonna refer to them as SPB when talking about them later :) )
LET’S PRAISE THIS DRAWING, BECAUSE IT HAS A TON TO PRAISE

As you can see, they have been VERY SUCCESSFULLY using the ‘circle method.’
They have some wonderful proportion going on! Look at those brows, eyes, nose and jaw! They are very well placed.
Also, look at some of this early shading they started? It’s very effective and really gets across MASS well. :D 
Also, the expression? It’s really well done. Like, super arresting!
You should be very proud of this Work in Progress, SPB!!! 
Earlier SPB said “Can someone please explain to my why, everytime, without fail, my eyes are always too high??’”
Your eyes are NOT necessarily ‘too high.’ 
I think what’s happening here is you are applying ‘straight on 2-d proportions’ to a turned head, but aren’t entirely familiar with how to do this. This is making you struggle a bit with certain features when they are at an angle.
Source images are very helpful, but also remember that source images can be at weirder angles than just a head turning left to right.

The image you were working from was actually INCREDIBLY challenging, as not only is it 3/4 view, but the model’s head is slightly turned UP.

So the artist has a choice here: 1) change the drawing so it matches the pose
2) use the source image as inspiration for color/shading/expression- but find a simpler pose to work from that more matches the angle drawn.
Either choices is a valid one! :D But it’s probably easier to do #2
So here are some things you could edit

And define the brow bone, so that it hits the corner of the eye. That’ll fix your ‘eyes too high’ problem really quickly! :D 
For a drawing of a face, the eyes are correctly placed as far as height goes!- but they are very different from the proportions of the model.
For future drawing keep in mind proportions- like eye distance, mouth size, and think about defining jaw/ear shapes. Getting structures  (like eyes, ears, mouth and nose) firmly in place before you start shading/putting in details will help a lot! :D

My finished Loki painting study 💪 As I was close to finish it I discovered more and more things to fix, like colors and proportions. Cannot avoid looking at it and compare with the reference a lot of times 😅 I was planning to do it as a "quick study" and focus on things like colors, lights and shadows, but ended up adding more and more details... 😐 Also as the reference was "blurry" I decided to make the same "movie/cinematic effect" to my painting so I added some noice and high-pass. The painting itself was almost completely done in one layer. I used only one more layer for the black movie bars, and in the end some more layers for the color correction, noise, contrast and high-pass. Summary: Humourous Forged in Fire AU. Four novice bladesmiths, three of them Irish, compete in one of the toughest competitions of its type, Forged in Fire. "Great men are forged in fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame."- John Hurt
They had never met until now, apart from Killian and Liam, who were brothers. Graham, a tall, curly haired, blue-eyed bulk of a man, was also from Ireland. The three of them had made it through to round two of one of the toughest competitions currently aired on American television. Forged in Fire. Four bladesmiths competing against the clock for the grand prize, which, as they had all learned when the fourth competitor, David, had been eliminated, was much tougher than they had anticipated.
“We’re sorry, David, but your blade did not make the cut.”
Red-faced and in slight shock, David had gathered his tools and left the studio, or the forge as it was known. He hung his head as he walked out of the room, metal tools rattling in his tool bag, lifting it again as he had been instructed by the production team. They were going to put a slow motion shot of him leaving and they wanted him looking tall and proud, his own opinion on getting eliminated voicing over the sequence.
“It’s tougher than you think, and I respect the judges. It was the right choice. I just didn’t make the best knife today and that’s okay because I’ve learned a lot.”
“David’s knife was good,” Graham whispered to Liam, their forges right next to each other back in the studio. “I thought I was going for sure.”
“Aye,” Liam muttered under his breath with a nod, setting his footing into a wider stance behind his anvil.
“This is tough,” Killian whispered to both of them, tucking his chin to his chest to hide his words.
“Bladesmiths!” Wil Willis bellowed out over the forge, making all three men turn to face him. “Round two,” he grinned devilishly. Killian gulped. “You have three hours in which to attach handles to your weapons using the items offered to you,” he motioned to the well-dirtied metal racking in the corner of the room, stacked with offcuts of all kinds of materials, “turning them into fully functioning weapons for our judges tests, which include a rope slice and sleeper chop.” Liam, Killian, and Graham all followed the motion of his arm, eyes scanning the pieces of odd materials. “But,” he added dramatically, and they all returned their gaze to him. “They must include a guard and an element from this.”
They all held their breath as the host reached for the silky red sheet covering an oddly shaped object. With a flick of his wrist, the material fell away to reveal a huge, brass ship propeller sitting neatly on the table in front of them.
“Oh, Jesus,” Graham uttered, his words lost on a chuckle.
Killian looked over to his brother, both ex-naval men, and smirked. It was ironic, in a strange way, that the thing that had carried them across oceans would now, potentially, sink them.
“Bladesmiths, your three hours begins...now!” Willis yelled and all three men scurried to the pantry.
“I have no idea what I am going to do,” Graham mumbled to himself. His blade had received the most attention from the judges because of a slight warp in his tang. He could fix this easily by hiding his tang in a cylinder of material as a through tang, but which to choose? His eye scanned the shelves, flitting back and forth before he fixed his gaze on some deer antler. It was big enough to drill and shape into a comfortable handle, so he grabbed it before either Jones brother had a chance to.
Killian went to the top shelf immediately, spying some Micarta. It was one of the strongest materials and would stand up to the tests set out by the judges, but as he reached for it, so did Liam. They both looked at each other with a smirk, fingers holding the grey material tight.
“Age before beauty, brother,” Killian quipped with a wry grin, releasing his hold on the scale.
“No, no, I insist,” Liam said with a nod, offering Killian the piece. “Shit before the shovel, little brother.” He’d uttered the words under his breath, and they would probably be edited out of the final cut of the show, but it was mostly lost in Killian’s laugh. “Here, take it. For your little knife,” he smiled.
“I assure you, brother,” Killian began, pushing the Micarta back into Liam’s hand. “My knife, much like other things, will be much bigger than yours.”
Liam took the Micarta with a smirk, heading back to his workbench, whilst Killian grabbed some African Blackwood. It was strong and would fit his blade well, the rustic, camp knife style with a Celtic twist. Traditionally, Celtic knives were shorter, more like a small dagger, with a single loop handle and leather wrapped handle, but the shows specifications meant he had to go bigger. Killian had made a Viking Seax, a single edged blade with, traditionally, a handle made of natural materials, a knife style that had a reputation as a great chopper.
“I’ve made a Seax. It’s strong, and it’s a great chopping blade that will knock my brother right out of the competition. I’m going to cut off a piece of the prop, flatten it out and slide it between the scales and my tang, giving my handle a third layer.”
Killian ran to the tool bench, eyes searching over the dusty surface until he found what he was looking for. The grinder, fitted with a diamond cutting disc, was in his grasp before he could blink, and he then ran to the propeller in the front of the forge.
“Looks like Killian is taking a huge chunk of that flat edge side of the prop,” said David Baker, historic weapons expert and advisor to Hollywood.
“He is most likely going to flatten it out and use it somewhere in his handle,” J. Nielsen, another of the judges, pointed out, watching Killian whizz across the room with the section of propeller he had ground off.
Killian was at his anvil in a second, gripping the brass in his tongs and whacking it flat with his blacksmith’s hammer. The sound of metal on metal rang out, a bead of sweat on Killian’s brow falling to his anvil. The forge was hot, heat from the four propane forges still lingering in the air, and with each collision to his anvil, Killian felt the ricochet in his wrist and his forearm.
“Hitting that brass a little hard there, brother?” Liam teased, brushing past Killian with his own part of the propeller. He had popped off the boss cap, unscrewing the bolt that held the shaft in place, testing the weight in his hands. “When are you going to learn that hitting something harder doesn’t always yield the best results.”
“And when are you going to learn, brother,” Killian began, grinning from ear to ear with a filthy smirk. “The force from a hammer is proportional to the size of the tool. I cannot be held accountable if my tool is bigger than yours.”
“So you say,” Liam sniggered, shaking his head at his brother’s cockiness.
“Have you ever heard a complaint?” Killian raised an eyebrow at his brother who met his comment with silence. “I didn’t think so.”
“Layers will add integrity as well as a sleekness to my blade. I’m going to slip the brass under the scales to give my knife a really sexy look, kind of like a brass vest under a wooden jacket.”
Once he had the brass as flat as he could get it, Killian got back to his table and set about tracing the holes of his tang so he could drill out the brass and African Blackwood. Killian knew Liam’s plan. He had already watched him put a thread on the end of his tang so he could just screw the brass bolt in place and shape it on the belt sander. It was ingenious, really, but Killian liked the challenge of creating the perfect handle for his blade.
Glancing to his right, Killian spotted a frown on Graham’s face.
“Uh oh,” Willis thought out loud, spying Graham’s mistake instantly. All three of the judges followed his nod of direction, sucking in mouthfuls of air through their teeth in a triple wince. “Looks like Graham has messed up his material.”
Graham, in his haste to repair his warped tang, had misjudged the size and angle of the hole needed in his deer antler and had managed to drill right through the side of it. He sighed audibly, shaking his head from side to side before swiping his hand over his brow. Antler dust stuck to his sweaty forehead and the muscles in his jaw ticked.
“You can fix it,” Killian encouraged, his voice shaking Graham from his self directed rage. “Get some dust and epoxy,” he instructed selflessly.
It was like a lightbulb went off in Graham’s brain and he rushed to the saw, gathering what dust he could so he could mix it with some epoxy resin and steel dust. His handle would be off colour, but it would be functional, and that was the most important part of the competition.
“Thanks, mate,” he called to Killian who simply gave him a nod of assurance.
“Did you see that?” Willis asked the judges, directing his question at Doug Marcaida, an edged weapons specialist. “Killian just helped his fellow competitor.”
“He’s a source of inspiration,” Doug nodded humbly. “Great men are forged in fire,” he began, pointing out Killian who continued to work on his blade handle with a stern focus. “It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame.”
“Did you just quote Doctor Who?” David Baker asked his colleague, aghast the man had delivered such a poetic quote from a TV show character.
“John Hurt,” Doug laughed. “As Doctor Who.”
All three men were at the same stage. The materials they had collected had been sized and cut into a rough shape using the huge bandsaw, and they are all currently hunched over their workbenches mixing epoxy. Two syringes full of the two resins were squeezed into each other on a flat surface, mixed with a flat spatula made of wood, the chemical reaction happening almost instantly. Graham added his dust to the epoxy, turning it into a lump consistency that wasn’t as easily spread over his tang as the glue Liam and Killian were using. They all rushed to get their handle scales in place, tapping them gently with a hammer.
“No, no, no!” Liam cursed, turning from his bench dramatically and running his steel greyed hands through his curled hair.
“Tap, tap, tap, crack. I’m done. Now my blasted brother is going to win.”
“Oh no,” one of the judges said. “Looks like Liam has broken one of his scales.”
Liam ground his jaw in frustration. He had hit the handle material too hard at just the wrong angle and it had snapped the top corner of his scale. He stared at his knife, shoulders tensed, fists balled in anger. In his anticipation to get his handle fixed he had lost his patience with tapping the delicate material with the hammer, chipping of a corner. It was a little too much to cover with some strategic sanding, so he had no choice but to start again.
“It’s going to be tricky getting those scales off now,” judge J. Nielsen told host Wil Willis. “His epoxy is already set.”
“Fuck!” Liam grunted, sure his outburst would most certainly not make a final cut.
Killian looked up from his own project, his brother’s cheeks pink with a mixture of heat and fury. He looked at Liam’s faux pas, sitting in front of his brother like a mockery of his skills, and his lips turned up into a smug grin.
“Problem, brother?” Killian taunted, looking back to his own work. His epoxy had set, fusing two brass plates between his tang and his outer wooden scales. It was perfect. All he had to do was sand it to shape.
Liam didn’t answer, punting his toe into the edge of his table.
“Shorten it,” Killian barked over the sound of Graham grinding his handle behind him. Liam looked over to him, raising an eyebrow in Jones brother fashion. “It’s only a tad, Liam,” Killian added, leaving his bench to pick up his brother’s knife. He pointed at the end, rubbing his grease covered thumbnail over the butt of Liam’s handle. “You can cut a smidge off, add an extra layer of new material and then thread your bolt on the end.”
Liam looked up at his brother, astounded by his commanding nature. He barely had time to respond before Killian thrust his knife back into his hands and Willis was announcing a time frame.
“Bladesmiths! You have thirty minutes remaining!”
Graham began humming a tune to himself as he pushed his knife handle against the sanding belt. Dust flew towards the floor and into his face, the mask he was wearing shielding his most from most of the splinters of antler. He was rushing, grinding in the wrong direction when all of a sudden the knife slipped from his grasp and his fingers were pushed against the coarse sanding belt, his knife point stabbing into his palm.
“Jesus, fuck!” He screeched, his Irish accent much thicker than it had been all day.
“Maybe, my reaction was bit drastic, but at least now I can say that literally my blood, sweat and tears are in that blade.”
“Oh, we got blood!” David Baker announced, tapping J.Nielsen’s arm in excitement.
“Is Graham going to need a medic?” Willis frowned, arching his neck to see more clearly.
“Are you alright, mate?” Killian asked Graham, his voice muffled behind his own face mask. He lifted his head, shutting off his machine to silence the screech of the belt, placing his knife on the bench beside it. “Is it bad?”
Graham hissed, clutching his hand to his chest. Killian motioned him closer and encouraged him to show him his hand, dark crimson flowing from his palm as soon as Graham opened it. Killian shook his head, looking up to catch the eye of Wil Willis, motioning with his arm.
“Can we get a medic in there?” Willis said, concern etched on his face.
Paramedics rushed to Graham’s aid. Liam downed his tools and for the first time ever, in the history of the entire show, the clock was stopped. Graham had sat on the floor under a medic’s instruction, and his leg was shaking, knee tapping the floor to distract from the pain throbbing through his hand.
“Is he going to be able to continue?” Baker thought out loud.
Graham was lost in a huddle of men, Killian pushed out by the circle by the medics. He looked over to Liam, his face pale, absolutely no colour in his cheeks, a solemn look on his face.
“When I reached Graham, I saw that his palm was sliced nearly to the back of his hand. His little pinkie finger was almost cut clean off, and the first thing I think is, he can’t possibly continue. The second thing is, that means it’s down to me and Liam. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a tad disappointed to be entering the final round because of an injury, but that won’t make besting my brother during the final any less satisfying.”
After the drama had cleared and Graham was on his way to the hospital, the forge fell silent once more. Liam and Killian stood before the judges table, part finished blades wrapped in protective blue cloth in their hands. Killian shuffled his feet, scuffing the dust with the toe of his boot, and Liam was nervously gripping his blade.
“Due to Graham’s medical elimination, there will be no need for further testing of your blades,” Wil Willis began, addressing both of the men in front of him. “For the first time in this competition’s history, we have brothers competing for the title and the check for ten grand.” He had his fingers tented, pointing to each brother in turn. “Congratulations on making the finale round. How do you guys feel about that?”
“No finer opponent,” Liam shrugged, looking sideways at his brother who had his trademark smirk and raised eyebrow plastered on his face.
“May the best man win,” Killian added, bobbing excitedly on the balls of his feet.
“Liam, Killian, we asked you here to forge a blade in your signature style, and we have not overlooked the fact that most of our competitors in this competition were Irish, so now we are sending you back to your home forges to recreate an iconic weapon from Celtic history.”
“The instant Wil Willis mentions Celtic, my heart flutters. Our family has strong Celtic roots, so beating Liam is going to be all that much sweeter.”
Liam looked to his brother, the same gleeful expression lighting up both their faces at the host's words. He hadn’t even revealed the weapon yet and they were both poised to explode with excitement as he reached for the red, silk cloth covering it next to him.
“And that weapon is...the Irish Ring-Hilted Sword.”
The covering fell away from the sword in slow motion, the glint of the silvered pommel catching their eyes. It was beautiful. A long, hefty sword with a distinctive design that simultaneously caused joy and terror to course through them both. What looked like a simple design was actually a long list of complex crafting techniques the show's host was about to divulge.
“You’ll have five days at your home forges in which to complete this challenge,” Willis said enthusiastically, a wicked grin on his face. “Your blades must meet the following parameters. The length of your blade must be between twenty nine and thirty one inches in length, it must be double edged, and include a fuller on both sides of the blade, that runs at least three quarters the length of the blade. You must have an ‘s’ shaped guard, with forked terminals, with at least three prongs on each terminal. Additionally, you must include a ringed pommel, through which you can see the tang. Bladesmiths, after five days you will return to present your swords to our panel of judges, and after they have thoroughly tested them, and inspected the quality of your work, they’ll declare one of you the Forged in Fire champion, who’ll walk out of here with a check for ten thousand dollars. Good luck, Bladesmiths. We’ll see you in five days.”
“Unfortunately, for Killian, he is not used to wielding such an impressive weapon, so it’s going to be easy to, once and for all, instill in him that he will always be the little brother.”
“My older brother seems too preoccupied with the size of the weapon when it’s really about how the sword will perform. I assure you, I’m up for this challenge, and when I forge the better weapon, and I will, whoever is jabbed with it, will most certainly feel it.”
After five days in their home forges, and after extensive rounds of judge testing - including both brother’s hearing Doug Marcaida declare that their blades ‘would cut’ - it was settled once and for all.

Turning 21: The Transition from Territory to Statehood in Illinois
Illinois became the 21st state in the Union on December 3, 1818, making 2018 its Bicentennial year. This month we are joining other Chicago-area cultural heritage institutions in celebrating the Illinois' Bicentennial by hosing a special pop-up display of archival documents and rare books from our collections: correspondence, maps, books, and more that date to the time period when Illinois was transforming from French-held "Illinois Country" to the 21st state in the Union.
This exhibit is a part of Chicago Open Archives, a month-long series of events throughout the city and suburbs connecting community members with the collections, programs, and services of local archival repositories. Learn more at http://chicagoarchivists.org/coa

The physical exhibit of reproductions will be on display at the University of Chicago's Joseph Regenstein Library throughout the month of October, with some original materials on display in the Special Collections Research Center. Transition from Territory to Statehood in Illinois
The oldest item displayed is a 1778 letter that was written when Illinois was a part of the American Revolutionary War's western theater. The letter, signed by George Wythe, George Mason, and Thomas Jefferson, congratulates George Rogers Clark on his appointment as the leader of a military expedition to the Northwest Territory. This was the beginning of a secret mission during the war later known as the Illinois Campaign, or Clark's Northwestern Campaign. Clark was ordered to seize control of Kaskaskia, Vincennes, and several other villages in French and British-held "Illinois Country." In the letter, the Virginia General Assembly mentions Native American raids in the territory which were instigated by the British. They also assure Clark that he and his soldiers will receive bounties of land as compensation. The nearby hand-drawn plat map demarcates the tract of 150,000 acres granted to Clark's soldiers in 1784.

Following the Revolutionary War, some, such as Gilbert Imlay, profited from the land grant system as surveyors. The 1797 edition of Imlay's popular A topographical description of the western territory of North America… served as an encyclopedia of North America for new settlers.

“The triangular tract of land at the head of this great vale, and between the Mississippi, the Ohio, and lake Erie (as that lake is vulgarly called), the country of the Illinois, is the finest spot of earth upon the globe, swelling with moderate hills, but no mountains, watered by the finest rivers, and of the most delightful climate; the soil, as appears from the woods with which it is clothed, is of the most abundant fruitfulness in vegetation. It abounds with coal; and there are multitudes of salt springs in all parts of it. There are mines of iron, copper, and lead. Wild rye grows here also spontaneously.” (p. 101)
Imlay’s Topographical description also reproduced the text of one Mr. Patrick Kennedy’s journal of an expedition in 1773 from Kaskaskia to the head of the Illinois river.

The practice of granting Illinois land to volunteer soldiers continued in the War of 1812. American Nicholas Biddle van Zandt's 1818 Description of Military Lands describes three tracts of bounty lands, including the Illinois Military Tract which was situated between the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. The aim of Van Zandt’s text was to “give a faithful, a substantial, and, it is hoped, a satisfactory view of the Illinois and Missouri territories” and to aid settlers in selecting “the very spot upon which he may fix his habitation and his home.” Van Zandt also describes the Illinois Territory as a whole including an early description of the Chicago River and its potential as a “safe and commodious harbor for shipping” and the means by which the sand bank blocking the entrance to Lake Michigan might be removed.

Adlard Welby’s A Visit to North America and the English Settlements in Illinois with a Winter Residence in Philadelphia included a description of the German settlement of Harmony, Illinois. Harmony was a settlement mostly comprised of poor Germans, though any person who agreed to live by the communal rules was allowed to join the community. The settlement lived by the principle of a communion of goods. That is, all of the harvested crops went into a communal store, and each person received the necessary amount of food. The tavern owner told author Adlard Welby: “We have every thing we can want, for our comfort and something more.”

Morris Birkbeck, a British emigrant to the Illinois Territory who would later serve as Secretary of State of Illinois, described his American travel experiences and the establishment of the English Settlement, in Illinois Territory in Notes on a journey in America, from the coast of Virginia to the Territory of Illinois. First published in Philadelphia 1817, Notes, and its follow up, Letters from Illinois (1818), were wildly popular with multiple editions being published both in the United States and abroad, including multiple translations. The hand-colored map on display was published in the 1st London edition of Birkbeck’s Notes and includes all of the land traversed by Birkbeck’s party. Note the interesting placement of the borders of Indiana and the Illinois Territory; the location of Birkbeck’s settlement in the southeastern portion of the territory, on the Little Wabash River is captioned “The Prairie Settlement.”

Birkbeck’s Letters from Illinois recounts his experiences living in the English Settlement and served to introduce Europeans (and hopefully convince them to emigrate) to the advantages of America.

British emigrant John Woods’ Two years’ residence describes his journey from England to the English Settlement in Illinois, along with the flora, fauna, agriculture, buildings, and business in the region. Woods' “Map of the allotments” shows the towns and ranges of the lower portion of Illinois.

Woods also provided a description of Birkbeck’s settlement, Wanborough:
“Mr. Birkbeck’s settlement, called Wanborough, is situated at the north-west corner of the English Prairie, and contains 25 cabins, a tavern, a store or two, and several lodging houses; and several carpenters, bricklayers, brick-makers, smiths, wheelwrights, and sawyers; also a taylor and butcher ... The building lots, at Wanborough, are some of five, and others of two and a half acres, laid out, like most of the American towns, in streets that cross each other at right angles, running north and south; the cross ones east and west. The lots are in the woods, but a considerable quantity of the wood is now cleared.” (p. 160-161)

  As Illinois inched closer to statehood in 1817, Cook and Blackwell - the first printers in Illinois - published a list of laws, many to establish county seats and courthouses. (Cook County, Illinois is named for printer Daniel Cook).

Counties and major cities in early Illinois were very different from what they are now. Kaskaskia was the capital of the Illinois Territory from 1809 to 1818. Located on the Mississippi River, it was flooded many times and the decision was made to move the capital to Vandalia in 1819, 70 miles northeast of St. Louis. Louis Beck's 1823 A gazetteer of the states of Illinois and Missouri… includes a plan for the new capital and the neighboring streets. It also describes Chicago as a small place of 10 or 15 homes in Pike County.

Ok I am gonna be super straight forward about this, making hairstyles like this is really challenging for me. I have tried a ton of times and I just can’t get the meshes to work out the way I like. UV mapping is a pain in the ass, making the hairline match well, and making sure none of the mesh strands are broken is next to impossible for me. Most creators that make hairstyles like this do them from scratch or spend a long time working on them for them to look right. I’m not saying ‘no’ because I am going to try to play around with some seasons meshes (I have hair ideas) but no promises :(

Hello! I use an adfly skipper + adblock, and if both of those don’t work then I just don’t download the cc. For some creators (nolan-sims, simduction, isjao, ivo-sims, and others) I will turn them off because I know these creators aren’t ones that use the sketchy adfly stuff, but for others that I don’t know well I leave it on. I use: U Block origin and adfly skipper (both on firefox)

Hello!! I don’t think this is my eyes because I’m not experiencing this glitch? Did you run a S4S batch fix over everything? I think that causes this glitch sometimes but I am unsure. Try repairing your game and if you have the “no EA eyelash” mod then redownload that and replace the old file.

Continuing work on the FF1 Amano edition. Got the forest and the imps looking much better, and started work on the fonts and UI elements. Ignore the warrior, that's a failed test, turns out realistic proportions are just garbage. If anyone knows of any chibi art by yoshitako amano of the characters, hit me up, otherwise I'll have to come up with an alternative way of creating those sprites.
I am running into major problems with the emulator though; Mesen (https://github.com/SourMesen/Mesen) is pretty damn crashy when trying to record using the HD pack builder. I can usually only export 5-10 sprites before the emulator gives out, and that repo hasn't been updated in a while :| This is a long shot given my limited followers, etc, but is there a better fork with these things fixed? I feel like the authors of the zelda hd pack (https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=31559.0) would know or some such.
Anyhoo it's not stopping things, just annoying. I could conceivably also just build and debug the damn thing but I don't really feel like it :P

Ok in stories I said idk if I’ll post everything I’ve drawn these three days and I decided to posttt, the second one is a little watercolor painting I did the other day then realized I almost never use bright saturated colors when water coloring so I swatched some of the bright colors and then drew this little character (third slide) and then yesterday decided to paint her in acrylics (first slide) and I luvvv, also coming from watercolor, painting digitally was weird cause it’s not building up color with layers like watercolor, but even this short amount of time of digitally painting I guess I developed a technique that I guess works with an opaque medium and I painted in acrylics like thissss I’m so proud of myselfff, I mean I was going in with no real plan but it’s still kewl, also I edited it a bit digitally in procreate to color correct, add the bokeh and also warped it a bit to fix proportions, cause there’s no canvas mirroring to see mistakes traditionally ._. well..,
yes and no. mostly no, because i am a coward who always Avoids Drawing Armor bc i am afraid of it, so i dont have much experience results to show there.
BUT, as far as learning to draw things in general, and general advice that i plan on eventually following when i stop bein lazy, is lots of reference photos. drawing things from “life” and sort of copying what you see, then comparing what you’re doing with the source, then fixing or redrawing where you made mistakes can help you with learning where you’re consistently messing up and help you notice details you often forget. 
maybe start with a simple and very basic sketch out of just the essentials and basic shapes youre going for, then slowly add more details, but trying to stick with adding detail gradually all over, bc if you try and focus on lots of details on like, just one portion, you could end up with really wonky proportions [thats a mix of my advice + stuff my drawing teacher taught my class WOO]. but maybe taking it one section at a time might help you learn it better [like, if youre drawing a full body, youd wanna do the all over/gradual adding detail, but if you wanna learn bit by bit maybe you’d just practice drawing a bunch of chest pieces?? i dunno, that one’s just an idea lol]
but as far as specific armor stuff, i cant be much help there as i dont have the Experience.

Our recent research on managing online channels shows that many businesses still don't have a digital strategy, although a good proportion now do. Our templates and guides give ideas on how to structure digital plans, but there is also the question of what is the best process for developing online and multichannel plans and reviewing performance against targets. To help answer this question I spoke to Sajjad Bhojani,
 when he was Head of Multi Channel Marketing and Development  at Dunelm and asked to explains their process for strategy creation and ongoing management of online channels. (This case study was originally in 2014, but we're sharing again to fit in with our multichannel marketing theme, since there are some interesting learnings).
Dunelm is the UK’s largest homewares retailer with a portfolio of 140 out-of-town superstores with the ‘Simply Value for Money’ proposition. Its online store features over 17,500 products  under the brand name Dunelm (formerly Dunelm Mill) with reserve and collect now available from their site. This Ideas and Advice site section shows how they are using a form of content merchandising to showcase their range of products.
Their annual report reveals that multichannel growth was one of four key strategic objectives in 2013 which were Enhance (specialist proposition); Expand (Store Portfolio); Grow (Multichannel) and Develop (IT and Logistics infrastructure) . Project P and L is based on estimates of growth in traffic and sales based on conversion models. These targets stay fairly fixed within that period, but are re-reviewed as part of the annual planning process.
For introducing new features to the site and improving our digital marketing we have an 18 month roadmap for development of new features and are currently adopting a new agile model for faster delivery.

But it may be in other sectors such as Electrical where price checking can be important and pure plays are dominant.
We fundamentally believe in a multi channel approach thus price consistency is just as important as brand consistency across all our channels. Though as part of our great proposition we always aim for competitive pricing. Web exclusive pricing – was probably more  relevant earlier on in the development of Ecommerce to encourage use of web, but we don’t want or need to encourage customers to try the web now and unnecessarily erode margin now.
There’s also the risk that differential channel pricing can be confusing. Customer’s are multichannel they don’t see Dunelm as two different companies. However we do offer free delivery for consistency too, although this is currently for orders over £50 or £150 for furniture.
For me, Place online is about offering the right experience, but also offering the right product or content for each online journey. Merchandising search listings for example (“searchandising”)  is really important. You have to decide the combination of featuring products with stock, offers or best sellers which will vary as retailers will runs different promotions and campaigns at any one time. Increasingly customers use the web as a research tool before visiting stores whether that be to find where their local store is or latest trends, colours and styles.  As such the the site needs to provide this content in a way that’s easy to find and deliver it an enjoyable experience.
Place today, also involve mobile access to our site. This has grown significantly so that it is now 20% of out traffic. There is also promotion to existing customers using Email marketing where we look to encourage increases in average order frequency and breadth of categories purchased in, those are our KPIs here. Many customers will have bought in single category, so the CRM programme will encourage the next purchase. This is another area we’re looking to refine and we now have a specific role within the team for this.
How do you manage conversion rate improvements and the implementation of new features on the site?
We’re not that advanced at this stage in our use of conversion rate optimization since we’re currently updating our Ecommerce platform to the latest edition of IBM Websphere. For example, we’re planning AB or multivariate testing in the future. We see it as more of a priority to introduce better personalization features onto the site. We do have basic product recommendations based on wisdom of crowd, but human intervention is required to implement the rules.
We’re around 12 months from an active customer experience improvement programme, but the intention is to implement a tool to help use these approaches. It’s not simply a case of choosing the right tool, resource is a big challenge too, we need a specific analytics resource and content/copy creation resource to make the updates.
Instead, what we currently do when we introduce new features we involve users to check that the experience is effective. This is typically a two-phase process where we review the experience with customers based on an initial working version of the page. For example, we may be improving our product page template, so we will create working wireframes for customer review before building the full template. We will then test again with customers to make minor changes when in User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
What is your process for getting the right investment in marketing channels?
How we assign our online marketing budget overall is simple overall - it’s based on Return on investment (ROI). For every £1 of investment we have to generate a return within a fixed revenue target from a combination of the site or instore (through Reserve and Collect), although we need to understand contribution to in-store better. To ensure that we’re using the right mix of digital media, we have to drill down to consider different types of investment, for example brand investments such as display advertising and direct response elements such as paid search (Google AdWords).
Direct response is directed at hitting the sales target with investment re-reviewed each month. What’s important is how you test and learn. It’s an evolving strategy with separate budgets identified for each channel and different KPIs for search and display since the intent is different.
Search is hugely important, it’s core to most retailers including us, but you have to separate investments and analysis for brand and non-brand search behaviour. Brand searches are where people know about us already and they search for Dunelm on its own or with a product name or category. It’s important to connect these searchers with the right product, but even more important to attract visitors searching more generally.
