Andrew Perez at Rolling Stone:
It happened, again: Democrats lost a winnable election to a racist, orange-makeup-wearing carnival barker, despite his odiousness, immorality, and unbridled corruption. This time, Donald Trump campaigned on an even darker agenda â the mass deportation of migrants, calls for more violent policing, and demands of retribution against his enemies â and he didnât have to try to steal the election in the courts or via a violent coup. In the battleground states, he appears to have run the table, and he will likely win the popular vote outright, something a Republican hasnât done in two decades. There are plenty of factors that could help explain why Vice President Kamala Harris lost â and why the race ultimately was not that close: Joe Bidenâs crushing unpopularity; pervasive sexism, racism, and xenophobia; an American culture that stupidly valorizes the ultra-wealthy and licks their boots. There was the Harris campaignâs decision to run a safe, staid campaign, from Democratsâ favorite failed playbook, Be Like Republicans. There was her refusal to break from Biden over his support for Israelâs war in Gaza â carnage that plays out on our screens daily, and has particularly affected young people.   The most likely explanation, however, for why Harris lost is the most basic one: Americans are deeply dissatisfied with a brutal economy.Â
After Washington put an end to Covid-era pandemic aid programs, Americans suffered two years of sky-high inflation, impacting the price of nearly everything, alongside higher interest rates â which drove up credit card rates, mortgage rates, the costs of car loans, and more. Amid a punishing cost-of-living crisis, voters have now punished Democrats. Exit polls and other survey results coming out of the 2024 election are incredibly clear that this contest was, as is often the case, about the economy, stupid. Edison Research exit polls show that two thirds of voters believe the state of Americaâs economy is poor or not so good; 69 percent of them voted for Trump. Asked what the most important issue in their vote was, 31 percent of voters said the economy, and 79 percent of those voters supported Trump.
The world is in a punish all incumbents mood, as we saw in the UK earlier this year, and sadly, the USA wasnât immune, as de facto incumbent Kamala Harris (D) lost to the 34x convicted felon, insurrection-inciter, adjudicated rapist, and vile bigot Donald Trump (R).
Swapping out Joe Biden for Harris may have helped save us in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Virginia, New Mexico, and New Jersey. Had Biden been the nominee, the Dems would have lost most, if not all, of these.

old thomas edison
mixin up the medicine
Edison soon became known as the âWizard of Menlo Parkâ because of the miraculous nature of his inventions which so radically changed how people lived.
My take on Edison is simply that he was a salesman and carnival barker as much as citizen scientist. Its apparent that he piggy-backed off the research of others, but at a time w many new inventions, a frontier, really. As flawed people can make great art, so goes science. humans are just terrible, and progress often seems to come at such great cost WTF CHUMBAWAMBA FUCKYEAH

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which tracks hate and extremist groups in the US, calls Jones âthe most prolific conspiracy theorist in contemporary Americaâ. Michael Edison Hayden, an investigative reporter and spokesman for the SPLC, says Jonesâs ability to influence a huge audience makes his speech dangerous. âHe is an amusing carnival barker so we kind of ignore many of the things that are staring us right in the face about how hateful he is,â Hayden says. âââHe has probably done more to further the cause of hate in this country than almost anyone outside of Donald Trump himself.â
Jones has been able to grow his Infowars platform through a lucrative sales model where he hawks specially made products on air, such as a variety of survivalist gear and a line of âoverpriced and ineffectiveâ vitamins and supplements. He testified last week that the company raked in $165m in sales between September 2015 and December 2018. âWith Jones, fascism is a business,â Hayden says.
As the Infowars audience grew in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, Jones also gained a new fan and regular guest: Trump. âHe ramps up his grift through the rise of extremist activism under Trump and sort of hitches his wagon of sales to Trumpâs rise,â Hayden says. âTo me, thatâs Jones in his final form, which is just coming from this libertarian, entrepreneurial, conspiracy-obsessed world to becoming something that is much more what we would call fascist.â

This Day in Julie-history: Madame Lilian Stiles-Allen was born on 28 July 1890
This week marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of Lilian Stiles-Allen, the woman who taught Julie Andrews how to sing. A celebrated soprano in her own right, Stiles-Allen was a renowned interpreter of lieder and oratorio during the inter-war years with a voice that âwas much admired for its sweetness, range, and dramatic powerâ (Bradford, 17).Â
Though not physically suited to the opera stage, Stiles-Allen performed widely in concert and recital in major venues with a particular emphasis on the English classical repertoire of Handel, Sargent, Beecham and Coleridge-Taylor. She was the original Nokomis in Coleridge-Taylorâs Hiawatha and a regular soloist at the Sir Henry Wood Promenade Concerts and the annual Handel Festival at the Crystal Palace. Stiles-Allen also enjoyed a solid career as a radio and recording artist, notably under contract to the Edison Bell label where she recorded both under her own name and the pseudonym of Linda Hynd (Williams, 161-63).
By the time of the Second World War, Stiles-Allen had largely retired from public performance and it was then that she turned her creative energies to teaching, a role she would embrace with gusto well into old age (Dawson, 17). Her list of students over the years included many notables of the British musical world such as Anne Ziegler, Aileen Cochrane, and Margaret Burton (Dawson, 17; Williams, 162). Without doubt, her most famous protĂ©gĂ©, and the one she herself counted as her greatest teaching triumph, was âthe phenomenal Julie Andrewsâ (âTeacher,â 20; Williams, 163).Â
Julie started studying under Stiles-Allen when she was just 9 years old at the behest of her step-father, Ted Andrews, who had himself taken lessons with the teacher soon after arriving in the UK from Canada (Andrews 2008, 48). Much has been made of the enormous influence Stiles-Allen had on the voice and singing style of "her star pupilâ, not least by Julie herself who has repeatedly credited âMadame,â as she always called her, with the foundational hallmarks of her distinctive vocal technique:Â
âFrom when I was age 9 until the day she died in 1982, she was my singing teacher and taught me good diction, placement, everything. A wonderful lady and a huge mentorâ (Andrews 2019: 16).
For her part, Stiles-Allen recalled:
âThe range, accuracy and tone of Julieâs voice amazed me. All her life, I discovered, she possessed the rare gift of absolute pitch, which means that she cannot sing out of tune. I make it a rule as a singing teacher to get three octaves in all voices. Julie, as a little girl and right up to the age of fourteen, had a most unusual four-octave range, from two Cs above Alt. right down to two Cs below middle C. She had absolute confidence in her voice and in meâ (cited in Cottrell, 34).
Right throughout her childhood and adolescence, Julie trained regularly with Madame to develop her voice and singing skills: first, at a studio in London and, then, at Stiles-Allenâs rambling country home in Headingley, just outside Leeds in Yorkshire. Due to the latterâs distance from London, Julie would typically journey up by rail and stay with Madame for the weekend and sometimes longer (Andrews 2008, 50ff). Inevitably, a deep emotional bond was forged that went beyond that of teacher and student. As Julie would later state of her relationship with Madame: âShe had an enormous influence on me. She was a third mother to meâ (cited in Windeler, 13).
Reading Julieâs many affectionate recollections of Madame, one senses she found in Stiles-Allen a level of grounded emotional support and domestic stability that was not always forthcoming in her own home life:
âI loved the cosy evenings after weâd finished work when, with Madame and her husband, we would all sit around a huge log fire. Such evenings were unknown to me, for that was the time when Mummie and Pop usually had to get ready for the theatre and go out. But with Madame, evenings were the time for relaxation and family talksâ (Andrews 1958: 16).
Once Julie reached adulthood, the singing lessons became less frequent but the pair continued to keep in close contact. They worked together closely on vocal preparation for many of Julieâs most famous musical roles including My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Stiles-Allenâs son lived for several years in Southern California, so she had occasion to visit Julie quite frequently after her relocation to the US (Cottrell, 213). Meanwhile, on her own trips back to England, Julie would always make a point of paying respects to her beloved teacher who, by this stage, had âdonated the Old Farm outside Leeds to the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama, and had moved south to a pretty cottage in West Kingsdown, Kentâ (Andrews 2008, 188).
It was here that Madame Lilian Stiles-Allen died peacefully in her sleep on 15 July 1982, just two weeks shy of her 92nd birthday (âObituary,â 10). It was a grand age and a fittingly serene end to an equally grand life. On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of her birth, we remember with fondness and gratitude the great Stiles-Allen. Brava, Madame!Â

Daiya no Ace: The Dramas #4 Educating Youichi
An explanation⊠To keep my brain from rusting I started a project to translate the drama tracks that came with the character song CDs and other stuff relating to Daiya no Ace (because I love them and theyâre all hilarious). My disclaimer - I am not a native speaker of Japanese, but I will do my best!
Character Song Drama CD 04: Kominato Ryousuke, Drama 01 Featuring Kuramochi, Haruichi, Ryousuke.
Scene: Kuramochi is in the library (!) when Ryousuke appears, looking for something to read.
(NB, in this drama, other characters call Rei âRei-chanâ, although in the anime/manga this seems to be a uniquely Miyuki term of address.Â
Also, a translatorâs admission - Kuramochi drops two names in his dialogue with Ryousuke about great people. I cannot make them out for sure. This is why there are a couple of [???] in the text, it really doesnât affect the drama overall though. The second I guessed at because knowing Kuramochi they are probably wrestlers, but I am not sure)
Oh yeah, and Ryousuke is a little scary. Nothing new there, then?
Ryousuke: Kuramochi?
Kuramochi: Ah, Ryou-san!
Ryousuke: Itâs unusual, seeing you in the library.
Kuramochi: Yeah, I guess so. It doesnât really fit my image, does it? But I had some English homework to doâŠso I came to borrow an English novel.
Ryousuke: Ah, for Rei-chanâs class, huh.
Kuramochi: It doesnât matter which one, but choose a novel in English and come to class with three pages translated, she said. Although I said it was impossible, she still made me do it. ButâŠare there books like that here?
Ryousuke: If weâre talking about English literature, then theyâre over that way. I reckon theyâll be with the foreign literature. If youâre going to translate it into Japanese then something from childrenâs literature like âAlice in Wonderlandâ, or one of the short stories where the vocabulary is simple might be the best. On top of that, you could ask previous students who did this exercise to see their Japanese translations and write something that matches those, too.
Kuramochi: Ah, you know a lot about this.
Ryousuke: Iâm an old hand, after all.
Kuramochi: Ah, so thatâs why youâre in the library!
Ryousuke: Well, todayâs afternoon classes are basically self study, so I just thought Iâd come borrow a book.
Kuramochi: Ehhh. What kind of books do you read?
Ryousuke: I really wanted to borrow Mizuki Shigeru or Itou Junjiâs horror manga, but that stuff isnât in the library. I really like Lovecraft, Clive Barker or Steven King, so if thereâs something like that, Iâd like to borrow it.
Kuramochi (silence, then, somewhat confused): ErmâŠwho are they? Are they famous people? Like Edison or Helen Keller or [???????????]
Ryousuke: Theyâre novelists. And of those people you just listed, the last one isnât a famous person.
Kuramochi [??????????] is definitely a famous person! Kawaguchi (?) too! Â
Ryousuke: I donât really care, honestly.
Kuramochi: Thatâs harsh.
Ryousuke: (Taking down a book): Ah, here. Do you know âRosemaryâs Babyâ? It was a movie as well.
Kuramochi:âŠNoâŠ
Ryousuke: You should read books sometimes.
Kuramochi: I do read! If youâre talking about martial arts magazines, wellâŠ
Ryousuke: Those arenât books. Well, it doesnât matter. Borrow whichever one you like. (he browses the shelves) Ah, itâs here, is it?
Kuramochi: AhâŠthat person you mentioned earlier, Love--whatever it wasâs book?
Ryousuke: Lovecraft. The name is written right there on the spine.
Kuramochi: (A bit flustered): Ah, it sure is. âThe Complete Collection of H.P Lovecraftâ. âAitch Pee.â Is it a book on energy battles then? (Heâs thinking HP as in game HP XD)
Ryousuke: (Pointedly) Howard. Philip. Lovecraft. Itâs just his name. Now let me see, Iâve read as far as volume twoâŠsoâŠhuh?
Kuramochi: Hrm, volume 3 isnât there, is it? Maybe someone else borrowed it?
(There is a slightly ominous backing track sound at this suggestion. Ryousuke is not amused).
Ryousuke: (Sinister voice): Even though I was planning on reading it.
(At this point, Haruichi enters the library. Or at least, the conversation.)
Haruichi: Huh? Aniki? And Kuramochi-senpai, too?
Ryousuke: AhâŠHaruichi? (heâs suddenly not so creepy).
Kuramochi: Little brotherâs come to borrow a book too, huh? (he literally calls him otouto-kun here).
Haruichi: Thatâs right. In fact, I just borrowed one a moment or two ago.
Kuramochi: Let me guessâŠa horror novel?
Haruichi: (Surprised): How did you know?
Kuramochi: (Thinking): These brothers are reeeally alikeâŠ
Ryousuke (scary mode again, to Kuramochi): You just thought, âtheyâre so alikeâ, didnât you?
Kuramochi: Ah, no, no, of course not. (Thinking): Heâs so sharpâŠ
Ryousuke: So, Haruichi, what did you borrow?
Haruichi: Huh? Oh, this? The third volume from the Lovecraft collection.
(thereâs that sinister sound in the background again).
Ryousuke: Why did you want to borrow that, exactly? (there are some passive aggressives in his tone)
Haruichi: (confused): Why..? Because I want to read it..?
Ryousuke: But that was the book I was planning to borrowâŠ
Haruichi: Huh? You were, aniki? But, even if you say you âplannedâ to, itâs not like your name is written down for it anywhere.
Ryousuke: My name is written on the borrowing card for the first two volumes, right?
Haruichi: It might be written down there, but that was a long time back, right? Iâm the one whoâs been borrowing this series of books lately, after all.
Ryousuke: I wanted to read it NOW.
Haruichi: I also want to read it now.
Kuramochi: Hey, come on you two, calm down.
(sinister background noise. Ryousuke is working his evils again)
Ryousuke: KU-RA-MO-CHI.
Kuramochi: (backs off): Right.
Ryousuke: (turning his attention back to the issue at hand): Haruichi, youâre the younger brother, right?
Haruichi: (holding his ground): Thatâs not relevant to this.
Ryousuke: In that case, Iâm senpai. Youâre the kouhai.
Haruichi: This is outside of club activities!
Kuramochi: (thinking) Woah..so this is how their sibling squabbles play out, huhâŠ
Haruichi: Aniki, Iâm not going to give up.
Ryousuke laughs. (Oh shit.)
Haruichi: What now?
Ryousuke: You really are forceful at the strangest moments.
Haruichi: (a little put out) forceful..?
Ryousuke: Itâs fine. You can borrow it. After all, thatâs a collection of short stories. Even if I read from volume four, it wonât be a huge problem.
Haruichi: Aniki! Thank you!
Kuramochi: (thinking) Ah, well Ryou-san does have his nice moments, after all.
Ryousuke: In exchangeâŠ
Haruichi: In exchange?
Ryousuke: Iâm going to take out volumes five and six and seven at the same time, and not return them for a long while.
Haruichi: Hey, donât do that!
Ryousuke: (laughs) What are you getting flustered about?
Haruichi: ButâŠthat will mean I canât read the next volumes!
Ryousuke: But I also canât read the next volume.
Haruichi: (sighs and thrusts the book at Ryousuke): Fine, borrow it first then. But be quick with returning it!
Ryousuke: Mm? Why have you gone all red all of a sudden?
Haruichi: I have not!
Ryousuke: That habit youâve always had of going red when you get really wound up about somethingâŠit hasnât changed, has it?
Haruichi: Itâs not like it matters!?
Ryousuke: Iâm just kidding. Itâs fine. Iâll read some other book.
Haruichi: (fed up): Honestly.
Kuramochi: (thoughts): Ryou-san, even though heâs a really nice guy, just doesnât want to show it, huh.
Ryousuke: Kuramochi.
Kuramochi: Yes?
Ryousuke: Right now you just thought, âEven though Ryou-sanâs a really nice guy, he just doesnât want to show itâ, right?
Kuramochi: Eeeh?!
Ryousuke: Hurry up. If you donât choose a book to borrow, lunch break will be over.
Kuramochi: Ah, crap, Rei-chanâs homework! (he hurries off to the other bookshelves).
Ryousuke: (Sighs) Donât run in the library!
Kuramochi (yelling from distance): Uissu! (Yes sir).

Faust Nosferatu The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari Phantom of the Opera Hunchback of Notre Dame HĂ€xan  Edisonâs Frankenstein (short) / The Haunted Castle (1897 version - Oldest known Horror film, short.)  _______________________________ Universal Black and white (Talkies, in order. Note, there are thirty of these but Iâll list the main ones.): Dracula (Sequels include Draculaâs Daughter, Son of Dracula) Frankenstein (Sequels: Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein.) The Immersive and the Cinematic - Frank Gray
The Immersive -Â As an adjective:Â
Of a work of art, performance, screening, game that seems to surround the viewer or player so that they feel totally involved in the experience.
Noting or relating to activity that occupies most of oneâs attention, time or energy.
(In a computer or gaming system) generating a 3D image that surrounds the user.
Immersiveness - As a noun:
Providing, involving, or charecterised by deep absorption or immersion in something. (Such as an activity or a real artificial movement).
Immersion - As a noun:
As a metamorphic use of the experience of submersion; applied to representation, fiction or simulation; can be defined as the state of consciousness where a âvisitorâ or âimmersantâ is transformed by being surrounded in an artificial environment; used for describing partial or complete suspension of disbelief, enabling action or reaction to stimulations encountered in a virtual or artistic environment.
Cinematic - As an adjective:
That which is of or related to cinema.
Combining the two will give you an immersive cinematic space.
Immersive spaces include:
Auditora: odeons, amphitheatres, theatres and concert halls.
Churches.
Museums and galleries.
Cinemas: standard, 360 degrees and IMAX.
Immersion can also be charecterised by reading and using our imaginations, as well as playing VR game.

Talking about cinematic immersiveness made me remember 4D cinemas, maybe in the late 00âČs early 2010âČs I remember going to theme parks and them showing films in 4D. The difference between this and 3D is as well as the imagery âpoppingâ out at you, the seats youâre sat in shake, mist and water get sprayed at your face, and they backs of your seats can move and poked your back. There was also a standing up 4D experience I had at Universal Studios, where you were apart of the movie, Twister (1996), you stood on a platform and a set was built around the screen where you watched a scene from the movie. The platform shook and they used fire effects around the platform, which was very immersive. They even had a flying cow prop which made me laugh.
