#booklover #bookstagram #everymonday ••• #chiani #artdirection #illustration #creativedirection #graphicdesign #brandidentity #branding #design #visualdesign #strategy #advertising #packaging #communication #concept #photography #managers & #designers #myartismydirection #designthinking @chianidesign #designboutique #vierijacopochiani #freelance #dontwasteyourpixels #palazzoschio #creativecollective #2022 #vicenza (presso Chiani) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbFLqCuAXdK/?utm_medium=tumblr

Information of Speakers — Erik Spiekermann
Erik Spiekermann (born 30 May 1947 in Stadthagen, Lower Saxony) is a German typographer, designer and writer. He is an honorary professor at the University of the Arts Bremen and ArtCenter College of Design.
Spiekermann studied art history at Berlin's Free University, funding himself by running a letterpress printing press in the basement of his house.
Between 1972 and 1979, he worked as a freelance graphic designer in London before returning to Berlin and founding MetaDesign with two partners.
In 1989, he and his then-wife Joan Spiekermann started FontShop, the first mail-order distributor for digital fonts. FontShop International followed and now publishes the FontFont range of typefaces. MetaDesign combined clean, teutonic-looking information design and complex corporate design systems for clients like BVG (Berlin Transit), Düsseldorf Airport, Audi, Volkswagen and Heidelberg Printing, amongst others.
In 2001, Spiekermann left MetaDesign over policy disagreements and started United Designers Network, with offices in Berlin, London, and San Francisco.
In April 2006, the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena awarded Spiekermann an Honorary Doctorship for his contribution to design. His family of typefaces for Deutsche Bahn (German Railways), designed with Christian Schwartz, received a Gold Medal at the German Federal Design Prize in 2006, the highest such award in Germany. In May 2007 he was the first designer to be elected into the European Design Awards Hall of Fame.
In January 2007, UDN was renamed SpiekermannPartners. In January 2009 SpiekermannPartners merged with Dutch design agency Eden Design & Communication and continued its operations under the name Edenspiekermann . Erik Spiekermann
Erik Spiekermann besides being a type designer and information architect, is an author of books on type and typography. In the 80’s Erik launched Fontshop which was the first mail-order site where electronic fonts were produced and distributed. Based in Berlin he has been responsible for founding the design companies MetaDesign and Edenspiekermann.
He has been the type designer of typefaces such as;
FF Meta
ITC Officina
FF Info
FF Unit
What I find common in all of these typefaces is that they are all very corporate which is in line with that fact that he through his company MetaDesign with offices in major city centres in berlin, London and San Francisco was responsible for such corporate design for companies such as Bosch, Audi, Volkswagon, Lexus and Heidelberg Printing.
Now running Edenspiekermann, he is also an author or books and articles on typography and the recipient of many awards.
What keeps Erik Spiekermann motivated is keeping an eye on the rest of the world. Any trends, other designers, new technology and other cultures. He is an observer of the visual world and this to me is what keeps him fresh.
Spiekermann keeps a fairly regimented design process.
• Study the brief
• Dissect the brief
• Compare to other briefs
• Make analogue sketches
• Discuss with colleagues and client
• Condense sketches (digitally)
Erik has always believed that Type is eclectic and mirrors what is occurring in the visual world so what I can take from this is as designers and Type designers, we must keep up with new technology, new design, new typography if we are to stay relevant. You need to be flexible enough to move with the times and open to new styles and trends.

Week 5 / Content Design
Content underpins everything and is a huge part of the final design, without content there cannot be a completed product.
“User’s depend on copy to interact with apps and other products. If designers don’t know how to write well, the final product, be it a physical or digital one - can suffer as a result.” - FastCoDesign
It was mentioned how important it is to consider the content from the beginning of the design process, although a lot of the time it is forgotten and left until the end to be considered.
John Maeda highlights the importance of writing in his 2017 Design in Tech Report - Forget Coding: Writing Is Design’s “Unicorn Skill”. In his “2017 Design in Tech Report,” John Maeda writes that “code is not the only unicorn skill.” In his opinion writing is the next most important skill.
Paul Woods, COO of the digital design firm Edenspiekermann, wrote, “Sure, you can have a beautiful UI/frame, but once you have that (we all know a great UI is an invisible UI), all the viewer cares about is what’s inside: the artwork, the story.” I completely agree with this, a user interface should also consider the content as a way of moving the user through the actual product with ease. We must consider the content that will be included within our health app and ensure this is relevant information that will help to inform the users.
