Bly Manor Appreciation Week - May 25: Favourite Episode

Y'all i just thought of something...

1×4 "The Way It Came", The Haunting of Bly Manor

** I noticed that, in all the flashbacks of Dani and Eddie, he always calls her Danielle. Never Dani. And on the flip side of that, Dani always calls him Eddie, and never Edmund. I thought it was interesting to show the choice whether to use the other's full name vs a nickname. And it got me thinking...

We as an audience see that Eddie centers his whole world around her. From childhood, it is clear that Dani is everything to him. You can tell by the way he looks at her. While trying on his glasses, she asks whether he can tell it's her without them on. He replies "of course, I see you everyday". His face lights up when he says this. (I can't blame him for that tho, honestly). He then invites her to stay for dinner, saying that his mom probably wishes she could swap children. This is where we start to see the difference between them... Because Dani replies, "then you'd have to deal with my mom". While Edmund is obviously important to her, he isn't everything to her. She has her own life, her own issues. No dad, and her mom is barely there. Her feelings aren't reciprocated to the same degree as he feels for her. He's a friend. Someone to talk to. Someone who cares, or a place to go. His mom is like another mother to her. A far more competent one, at that. Eddie and his family are involved. That's why Dani hangs out with him. Why she likes him.

And then another flashback. The party with his family, where Mrs. O'Mara gives Dani her old wedding dress and says that she remembers the first time she met Dani. She talks about how sweet she was and how Dani looked at her and said "Good morning, Mrs. O'Mara. I'm Dani. And I'm gonna be Eddie's new best friend."

But then there's Eddie's toast to her, which was slightly sexualized. Talking about how they kissed on a dare when they were kids, and the whole stupid pregnancy bit, and his response was to propose to her, year after year until they were old enough and she finally said fuck it. I mean, they were literal CHILDREN. Dani knew that. It was a game to her. They were playing a game. But our boi Eddie here, took that and just fuckin ran with it.

I also think that the whole possession vs love conversation between Dani and Jamie definitely play a role in this. Eddie sees her as basically his wife the whole time. So he calls her by her given name. Danielle. But Dani has only ever seen him as a friend. Another person in his life. And like everybody else who knows him, she calls him Eddie. I just thought that was an interesting little bit in their relationship.... What do y'all think?

So I was writing and the phrase "Edmund appears" came out. It annoys me, because it reminds me of Pokemon.

Like when you're walking around and SUDDENLY A WILD POKEMON APPEARS. And then you have to spend time on a pointless battle with a Pokemon that you don't want. Kinda sums up Eddie and Dani???

Dani's just trying to live her life and then sigh... there's Eddie. Like, aw fuck, not again!

When I first watched bly I thought Eddie got hit by a train. I thought it was a dumb place to a train track. Then I thought it was even more dumb for him to get out without even looking especially with that sooo close. How dramatic and stupid can you be. I was going into a tail spin about how it's not Danis fault he was being a dick about it. He didn't need to do that especially like that. Like who does that knowing a traintrack is so close by. He was pushing her into it anyway does he expect her to be happy and jolly. Be upset about the break up but no need to act like that. Then I realised it wasn't. Either way it was stupid af for him to go off walking in a fucking road and not Dani's fault he was being a twat. He didn't need to act like that. He didn't look. So yea I was doing a major deep dive into Dani's defence about Eddie. I didn't even know her yet really. Come hell or high water I'm defending that bitch. Lol.

I’m so sorry but this is the funniest fucking thing I’ve gotten. Like I know it’s not your fault because it was somewhat ambiguous at first, but now I’m just imagining a train approaching, horn blaring, shaking literally everything around them so you can’t miss it, and Dani’s just trying to have this intimate conversation, but she has to yell to be heard, and Edmund is like “you know what? fuck it. getting hit by a train has to be better than this conversation” and just steps out.

But yeah. Should he have looked? Yes. Should the truck driver have been paying closer attention? Also yes. But in Eddie’s defense (I know), his girlfriend of six years did just dump him out of seemingly nowhere. That’s got to be a shock to the system, and he wasn’t thinking clearly. 

The thing is, I don’t think he realized he was pushing Dani into anything, and as much as I hate to admit it, that’s kind of on her. Sure, there’s a chance he could’ve picked up on her hesitation, or maybe she dropped hints here and there, but I think, for the most part, she got so used to tucking those feelings of discomfort away that she just became really, really good at pretending everything was fine.

I mean, here’s a girl who’s spent her whole life without a stable home. She had Eddie’s family, sure, but they weren’t her family. I suspect, having spent a decent bit of time analyzing Dani, no matter how many times she was told she was more than welcome, she felt like she was taking up too much space, was too much of a burden on others. I think it’s possible that, while she might’ve truly loved Eddie, a part of her stayed with him so long out of obligation. Sort of paying back he and his family for the kindness they’ve shown her. 

And, after a while, that became normal for her. Stable. Disrupting the careful balance she’s struck with the universe is a terrifying prospect for her, and it makes sense that she'd be extremely averse to doing so. If she can just do what’s expected of her, everything will be fine. That manifested into lying to herself and everyone around her until it finally became too much. (Not to mention the homophobia and Midwestern Courtesy(TM).)

So, yeah, no, Eddie should not have cursed at her, and he should have looked before getting out of the car. Dani should've spoken up way sooner than she did, but you know, I can’t really blame her. It was a mess all around.

Listening to the A Bite Of podcast abt Bly Manor and they're talking about how elated Dani looks when she sees her bedroom at Bly n now I'm thinking about how this is probably the first space she's had as an adult that's truly her own and how freeing that is and now I'm emotional
