So I wrote a little something loosely based on this post I made about Eddie subconsciously associating his future wedding as being with Buck- I haven't written for ages but I thought if I was gonna make it into a fic I'd also have an accidental drunk confession to Buck in there- and this is that. If I ever wrote a whole fic of this there'd be no cheating so dw dw
"It must be nice," Buck says from the floor, "Marr-Marriaging, -having a wedding. I want that, I'd want-"
"I know what you want," Eddie laughs confidently from the empty tub. It feels very zen, lying here with his legs hooked over the circular tub, like lying inside a big cereal bowl. He is so drunk, and giddy and totally at peace with everything, "You want a spring wedding because you want a frankly ridiculous amount of flowers. You want it far enough away from the city that you can see the stars at night, but not so far that it'd cost too much for everyone to travel there. You like the idea of releasing lanterns but you're worried about the environment so you'd probably want - like- doves or butterflies instead-"
"Butterflies," Buck says from the floor, his voice thick, "Eddie, what-"
"M'not finished," Eddie continues with the gravitas of someone so hammered they cant feel their legs but who is nevertheless making an Important Point, "Butterflies, then. You want a light coloured suit, something that breathes well because you'll worry about sweating. Bobby would be doing the ceremony, so maybe Athena to walk you down the aisle? And of course Maddie as your best man. Woman. Person."
"… Maddie?"
"Well yeah," Eddie shrugs, transfixed by how the ceiling seems to be slowly tilting to the side, "Because Chris would be mine, and that way they can both be involved."
There's a frantic shuffling noise from the floor, and Buck's voice is much clearer when he speaks again, "Eddie. Eddie are you talking about- me and you getting married?"
"Who else?" And in his alcohol-soaked state, it's as simple as that- who else. God knows he's tried to fit other people into that role and they just never fit right because the void in his life is so decisively Buck-shaped. Haha, God knows, his chest begins to shake with silent laughter, it's funny, right? Because of the Catholicism.
"And that's-" Buck sounds kind of upset, which makes Eddie pause, why would Buck be upset when there's good booze and the ceiling is tilting and they're getting married? "That's something you want- the-the spring wedding and the butterflies and the-"
Oh, Buck's simply misunderstood, that's easy.
"I just wanna be the guy standing next to you."

total guitar #160 march 2007 [joe's video]
transcript below cut:
You voted Dance, Dance in at No 57 in TG’s 100 Greatest Riffs, so we managed to collar the dual guitar talents of Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman and Patrick Stump to ask them how they write riffs, who they think is the ultimate riff-writing machine and what they deem to be the top five greatest riffs ever written…
Words: Claire Davies, Images: Joby Sessions
When you look at Fall Out Boy or listen to any one of their albums, it’s easy to dismiss them as pop punk scamps who like to mess around on the guitar but don’t take it that seriously. In some respects you’d be right, but singer/guitarist Patrick Stump and his talented co-guitarist Joe Trohman know quite a bit about writing insanely catchy riffs and playing guitar.
Patrick, for instance, doesn’t respect players who wail unnecessarily over a song. “I like restraint in guitarists,” he says. “It’s easy to go overboard and try to be Eddie Van Halen. But here’s the thing: you’re not.” Joe, on the other hand, is completely obsessed with vintage guitars. “I was really into vintage Gibsons, but I just used to break them all the time and it turned out to be kind of expensive. Now I play Washburns ‘cos they have that same wide-neck feel and pickups as some of those 70s Les Pauls.”
One thing they’re both passionate about, however, is writing great riffs and how you - by expanding your musical horizons - can write one with as much groove as Pantera’s Walk…
So guys, why did you choose guitar and when did you start playing?
Joe Trohman: “I started playing guitar because of Metallica. I used to listen to them loads and when my grandma got me the Live Shit: Binge And Purge video I couldn’t stop watching it. I used to play viola and trombone in my school band, but watching bands like Metallica and Smashing Pumpkins made me wanna play guitar. From the moment I got a cheap $50 guitar, I played it all the time.”
Patrick Stump: “I chose drums to begin with, but my dad was a folk singer in the 70s so he always had a guitar lying around. I’d mess around and write songs on it, but I never fancied myself as much of a player. When the band started I ended up singing, even though I was supposed to be a drummer. Then one of our guitarists quit, I had to fill in and it went from there.”
When you were starting out, which guitarists influenced you?
Joe: “Kirk Hammett and Dimebag had a huge impact on me, as did Billy Corgan. I was into a lot of lead players, I guess, but as I got older I realised how important it was to play rhythm as well. People don’t realise how good a rhythm player James Hetfield is. I also love Johnny Marr, who has probably been my biggest influence so far.”
Patrick: “I’m not a huge Stones fan, but I appreciate Keith Richards’ playing ‘cos it’s all about his riffs. Outside of that, my favourite shit as a guitar player is funk; everyone from James Brown to Prince. I also love jazz player Joe Pass, who is one of the only people good enough to noodle on guitar, and Jesse Johnson who was in a band called The Time from the Prince movie Purple Rain. My favourite solo of his is just one note, but the crazy shit he does with that one note is unreal.”
Moving on to riff-writing, how would you describe a guitar riff?
Joe: “It’s a cool guitar part that catches you instantly. It’s something you can play over and over without it losing its edge.”
Patrick: “Yeah, it’s four bars that are simple and that grab you immediately, like the riff from Janet Jackson’s Black Cat. I think a good riff comes down to a good rhythm section. When you look at a guy like Dimebag, he always got right in there with the bass and drums. Pantera were built on a groove as strong and simple as any R&B groove.”
Joe: “Yeah, Walk has to be one of the simplest riffs ever but it grooves, and that’s what matters: what you do with the riff and how much it grooves.”
So how do you come up with riffs, such as the one on Dance, Dance?
Patrick: “We just fuck around until we come up with something. You’ll come up with a gazillion riffs when trying stuff out, but every so often something will jump in front of you. Once you’ve got your four bars, stuff will start happening. With Dance, Dance I was just sitting in the van and we were all talking about The Cure, and I had this idea of a Cure bass line that they never wrote, which ended up being the riff in Dance Dance.”
What’s the best riff you’ve written?
Patrick: “I really like the riff on Of All The Gin Joints. But The Take Over, The Breaks Over from our new record [Infinity On High] is easily one of our best riffs. I wrote it after reading something Bowie said: that he was sitting around one day and decided that he really wanted to write a riff like Keith Richards did. So he wrote Rebel Rebel. After reading that I thought, ‘Fuck! I wanna do that!’”
What, in your opinion, makes a kick-ass riff?
Joe: “A great riff comes from being part of the rhythm and acknowledging that you’re not gonna produce something totally original. You should listen to loads of different music and put your own spin on it. Like on our last album we wrote a riff that was like Panama by Van Halen. We’ve obviously taken influence from them on that song, but we’re not ripping them off wholesale. Instead it’s like paying homage to them.”
Patrick: “When you’re writing a riff you’re part of the rhythm section and you keep up the tempo and rhythm as if you were the drummer. You have stabs as though you were the snare drum and you’re hitting low notes as though you’re the bass drum, but you’re also controlling the melody. At the end of the day, a riff is something that you can hum and it’s a rhythm you can play on drums. If you have both those qualities in your riff then you’re onto something good.”
What do you think are the Top Five greatest riffs ever written?
Joe: “I love the start of This Charming Man by The Smiths, and Black In Black by AC/DC. Walk by Pantera is probably one of the best riffs ever, same as Battery by Metallica, but if you can’t do triplets and haven’t got tons of stamina then it’s hard to play. I also love South Of Heaven by Slayer just ‘cos it’s so evil sounding.”
Patrick: “Satisfaction by The Stones is the be-all and end-all of riffs. I’d also go for Rebel Rebel by David Bowie, Janet Jackson’s Black Cat, the second section of Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. That one riff alone changed metal as we know it. I also wanna throw in Owner Of A Lonely Heart by Yes ‘cos it’s a great example of having really talented guitarists who still keep it simple.”
Who do you think is the ultimate riff-writing machine?
Joe: “I’d go with Randy Rhoads, just ‘cos I love that riff in Crazy Train. That guy was a genius.”
Patrick: “Angus and Malcolm Young have written so many phenomenal riffs that you can’t do any better than those guys. But I come from an R&B background so I wanna say Prince, just ‘cos Let’s Go Crazy is so awesome. And I also wanna know who wrote the riff to Michael Jackson’s Beat It [TG mentions it was session musician and Toto guitarist Steve Lukather]. Was it Lukather? Yeah, of course it was: he played the riff and Eddie Van Halen played the solo. I wonder why Lukather doesn’t get more recognition? Now you’ve mentioned Lukather, I wanna change one of my Top Five riffs to Toto’s Hold The Line, ‘cos that’s one of my favourite riffs ever!”
How did you approach the guitars on your new album, Infinity On High?
Patrick: “We’re both playing a lot more rhythm on this record, but if there is lead then it’s in much more of a BB King way where there’s a call and response.”
Joe: “My favourite thing about the guitars on our new songs is that I can ad-lib when we’re playing live. I know scales well enough and understand the fretboard well enough to do that. I could never tell you what key something is in, but in my head I know what it is. The cool thing about being in this band is that Patrick and I play guitar really well together, and I’ve learned a lot from watching Patrick and playing guitar with him.”
So can we expect a lot of guitar interplay from you on this album?
Joe: “Patrick also plays piano on this album, so he’s not always on guitar, but we split up a lot of the guitar playing. There’s a solo on The Take Over, The Breaks Over that we split in half when playing live, even though on the record it was done by Chad from New Found Glory and Ryan from Panic! At The Disco. We thought it was cooler to have guest guitarists than guest vocalists. So yeah, we split a lot of the guitar stuff up and switched between rhythm and lead. The weird thing is that I’m always pegged as the lead guitarist of the band, but we always switch back and forth.”
Patrick: “I think in general, I play a lot of the single-note leads and Joe plays a lot of the octave and chord leads.”
Which tracks on the new album best exemplify you guys as guitarists?
Patrick: “The end solo of Don’t You Know Who I Think I Am? Is how I love to solo. It’s real bluesy, which is what I’m about as a player. I’d also say the solo on You’re Crashing But You’re No Wave.”
Joe: “Yeah, that one had a lot of Johnny Marr filler guitar in there, and also Don’t You Know Who I Think I Am? It's filler guitar that doesn’t really jump out at you, but it’s atmospheric and it changes the vibe without you really knowing it.”
Finally, how proud are you as guitarists of your new album?
Patrick: “This is my favourite record because it’s restrained and funny. It’s basic rhythm playing, which is my favourite kind of guitar playing. I’m much happier playing a strong riff 100 times over than playing a kick-ass solo once. We do have kick-ass solos, but the way we write doesn’t always leave that much room for them.”
Joe: “I learned from playing on this album that I don’t need to play solos all the time. I’m proud of the record and proud of the cool riffs and songs that we’ve written together.”
Patrick: “I’m less impressed when someone shows off, and on this record we don’t show off a lot so obviously you should be impressed… I’m kidding!”

When Eddie turns around to see Richie getting down on one knee with a ring in his hand, his first instinct is to gasp “No!” and grab him by the elbows to keep him on his feet. And maybe he would’ve realized this was the incorrect reaction if he’d had enough wits about him to catch the way Richie’s face drops and turns a sickly white, but he’s too busy scrambling to kneel himself while he struggles to pull something out of his own pocket, talking a mile a minute about “I’ve been planning this for months you motherfucker, you are not allowed to beat me to it!” and Richie might be having the worst case of emotional whiplash known to man but if there’s one thing he can do, it’s pick up a bit.
So he follows Eddie to the ground, one hand restraining Eddie’s where it digs in his pocket and the other pushing the open ring box in this face. “Too bad, baby, you snooze you loose! I get to ask you to marr-”
Eddie stops him with a hand slapped over his mouth. “Not a chance! I’m asking, you shut the hell up- ugh, gross, Rich!” He shudders as Richie licks the palm of his hand with no small amount of enthusiasm. “Knock it off, that tickles!”
Eddie pulls his hand back and drags his wet palm down the side of Richie’s face, managing to free his wrist from Richie’s grasp and pull out his own black velvet box. The sight of it takes Richie out of the joke, settles him in the moment, and he can only smile hard enough to hurt as his eyes well up.
“Okay, you first, then,” he rasps around the lump in his throat. Eddie’s face softens into a matching misty eyed grin, the hand on Richie’s cheek shifting to cradle his jaw and pull him into a kiss.
“Fuck you.” He kisses him again. “You ruined my whole plan.” He’s not even bothering to pull back, saying the words directly into Richie’s mouth. “I love you so much I could fucking explode.” Eddie opens the box, revealing the shiny gold band inside. He pulls back just enough to look in Richie’s eyes. “Marry me?”
Richie was nodding and gasping his ‘yes’ before Eddie even asked, and they’re both crying and getting tears and snot all over the place. Later Richie will get his turn, and Eddie will tell him about his original plan that he totally spoiled you asshole, and even later than that they’ll bicker over who gets to say “I do” first, but for now they’re content to kiss each other’s smiling teeth and forget about everything but this exact moment.

Quotes from Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (2004) that altered my brain chemistry:
You see the war, the true war, has never been one waged by droids, or warships or soliders. They are but crude matter, obstacles against which we test ourselves. The true war is waged in the hearts of all living things, against our natures, light or dark. That is what shapes the galaxy, not these creatures of man. You are the battleground. And if you fall, the death of the Republic will be such a quiet thing, a whisper that shall herald the darkness to come. [Kreia]
It is like a cloud, a mist that drifts from living creature to creature, set in motion by currents and eddies. It is the eye of the storm, te passions of all living things turned to energy, into a chorus. It is the rising swell at the end of life, the promise of new territories and new blood, the call of new mysteries in the dark. [Kreia on the Force]
I would die first, and glady, to preserve you, untouched, unharmed. Now that I have found you, I cannot sacrifice what I have found. [Visas Marr]
If you're ever fighting someone who has the power over your mind, whether light or dark, play pazaak. Start listing hyperspace routes. Recite engine sequencers. And when they try to use their powers on you, suddenly it's not as easy as they thought. Because you'll be right here with me, playing pazaak, where they can't reach you... [Atton]
Do you wonder where she wanders now, Mandalore? Why she gave you your orders, then abandoned you at the edge of the galaxy? [Kreia, to Mandalore]
Mira: When the galaxy takes something from me, I want the power to let go... and I want the power to heal the echo when it's gone. Exile: < One can live their whole life with such echoes, Mira. But I can teach you to accept them. > Mira: That sounds alright, from where I'm standing.
The difference between a fall and a sacrifice is sometimes difficult, but I feel that Revan understood that difference, more than anyone knew. The galaxy would have fallen if Revan had not gone to war. [Kreia]
Revan was power. It was like staring at the heart of the Force. [Kreia]
Vrook: You were deafened Kreia: At last...you could hear Kavar: You were broken Kreia: You were whole Zez-Kai Ell: You were blinded Kreia: And at last...you saw.
It has taken time for me to return here, I lost my way, but I've been stronger for the journey. What happens now shall not be done out of hate, or revenge, but for the sake of all life. And I ask you, finally, to forgive me. This body is a prison no longer. [Visas Marr]
Perhaps you were expecting some surprise, fro me to reveal a secret that had eluded you, somethng that would change your perspective of events, shake you to your core. There is no great revelation, no great secret. There is only you. [Kreia]

Me, Morrissey & Manchester
As a teenager growing up in Manchester in the 1970s Billy [Duffy] befriended Steven Morrissey, drawn together by a mutual love of underground New York Music. They played in a band together briefly before both going on to extremely successful careers in music.
BD: I remember when I met Morrissey the first time he was smoking these menthol cigarettes called ‘More’ which were like long cocktail cigarettes. AL: Is that when he had long hair? BD: Yeah, it wasn’t really long, just longish, shoulder length curly hair. The quiffs all came later for us when after punk the next big thing was rockabilly with the Stray Cats around 1980…
AL: At the time was Morrissey a mate or just a guy that you had a musical connection with? BD: We shared an obsession with New York underground music and that was the connection with him, me, and my mates from Wythenshawe, like Phil Fletcher and Steven Pomfritt and to some extent Johnny Marr. Johnny was a young kid, 3 or 4 years younger than us but he was very smart even if he hadn’t really grown into himself at that point.
BD: I got the gig and they said do you know any singers cos Eddie Garrity had left the band too. I said, “I know this guy Steve and he really wants to be a singer and he’s shown me lyrics which are brilliant but I don’t know whether he can sing or not”. MP: It sounds like you were a bit wary about suggesting him? BD: Well, like I said the lyrics were amazing but I was just more scared for him that he would get battered cos it was quite a violent time. He wasn’t really effeminate but he used to have that sexual ambiguity thing and at the time the big bands were like Sham 69… it was all fighting, punk rock and skinheads. So, as such it was gamble to give him a go but I was desperate to do anything to get out of my home in Wythenshawe as I wasn’t getting on with my parents. Looking back on it I always knew that Morrissey was a unique character I just didn’t know if he could sing or not, or front it, but then I figured he’s such a strong character and what have I got to lose. All that said, even though his sexual orientation was always ambiguous it wasn’t a big deal amongst our group of friends. Nobody cared because a big part of the punk thing in Manchester was we always used to go to the gay clubs cos they’d have a straight night where they’d play all the music that we liked and you could go there and not get beaten up!
MP: You were obviously concerned about Morrissey being able to be a front man, so when did you realise it was going to work? BD: I think it was when he started throwing sweets out at that second Nosebleeds gig at the Ritz. We were the support band and did six songs and the last one was called ‘Peppermint Heaven’ and he threw out all these sweets which completely surprised everyone. That was the first time I thought that he had something special cos he never let on what he was going to do, he’d just thought that out and done it. Remember, at that time every other front man was more of an aggressive macho character and there was a lot of violence in the crowds and spitting going on so Morrissey throwing out sweets was quite different. We actually got a great review of that first gig in the NME by the legendary writer Paul Morley where he said “The Nosebleeds re-surface with a front man with charisma” and “Only their name can prevent them being this year’s big surprise”. An important thing to mention about the Nosebleeds with me and Morrissey was that we wrote all new songs and didn’t play any of the old ones including their single “Aint bin to no music school” which was their one known song! It was Morrissey’s insistence that we didn’t even do it and I don’t think he even wanted to call the band the Nosebleeds.
MP: So it was all brand-new songs that you’d written with Morrissey? BD: Yeah and one cover, apparently. I don’t actually remember writing with Steven though but I do remember some of the songs. As well as ‘Peppermint Heaven’ there was one called ‘Pristine Condition’… which I thought was quite funny and was about someone getting beaten up for being different. The lyric was from the point of view of a person pleading “don’t punch me in the face” … and that that was inspired by what was going on in town at that time. There was one called ‘I think I’m ready for the Electric Chair’ and I think also one called ‘Deeper and Deeper’.”
July 2017

A young Michael Landon, just a few years before rising to fame as “Little Joe” Cartwright in Bonanza, stars as Tony Rivers, a troubled teen struggling with anger management. Whit Bissell is featured as Dr. Alfred Brandon, a psychologist (or mad scientist) with ulterior motives. Yes! Oh, yes, indeed! It’s the AIP/Herman Cohen campy classic, I Was a Teenage Werewolf. The Grue-Crew is in full Drive-In Theater mode for this one.
High-quality versions of I Was a Teenage Werewolf, streaming or physical media, are not available, but there is a reason. Susan Hart, the actress and widow of AIP co-founder James Nicholson, owns the rights to eleven AIP films outright: It Conquered the World (1956) and its remake Zontar, The Thing from Venus (1966); Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957) and its remake The Eye Creatures (1965); I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957); I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957); The Amazing Colossal Man (1957); Terror from the Year 5000 (1958); Apache Woman (1955); The Oklahoma Woman (1956); and Naked Paradise (1957). She frequently negotiates rights for merchandise and theatrical showings, but physical media has not been updated for release in decades. You can, however, purchase a VHS tape of the movie.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Chad, is The Wasp Woman (1959). Yes, they’re sticking with 1950s B-movies, but moving from AIP/Herman Cohen on to Film Group/Roger Corman!
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: leave them a message or leave a comment on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel, the site, or email the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast hosts at [email protected]
To each of you from each of them, “Thank you so much for watching and listening!”
Check out this episode!

Une Mauvaise Influence - Eddie Munson
Stranger Things Masterlist
Emails I Can't Send Masterlist
Version Wattpad
- Oui, depuis quelques temps.
On perdrait toute crédibilité.
Je peux me défendre.

200 Films of 1952
Film number 174: Confidence Girl
Release date: June 20th, 1952
Studio: United Artists
Genre: noir
Director: Andrew L. Stone
Producer: Andrew L. Stone
Actors: Tom Conway, Hillary Brooke, Eddie Marr, John Gallaudet
Plot Summary: A money hungry couple swindles people out of cash all over the country, but will their one last ultimate scam backfire and change them forever?
My Rating (out of five stars): **¾
Here’s a “so bad it’s good” film for ‘ya. Well, kinda. It’s mostly pretty bad, and it’s mostly pretty fun because of its obvious flaws. Sometimes it almost works, though, making it very confusing to rate! Its major flaw is that it is basically two movies spliced together- each one on its own would have made sense, but trying to cram them together was disorienting and it utterly destroyed the rhythm of the film. It was worth seeing just for the low budget noir cheese, though. (some spoilers)
The Good:
Tom Conway as Roger Kingsley, the con man. He was perfect as a debonair guy most people would never suspect is a criminal, especially in the 1950s. (And he was George Sanders' brother irl?)
Hillary Brooke as Mary Webb. I loved watching her in every scene she was in- but sadly she wasn’t in enough considering she was the titular character!
The beginning was quite exciting as a chase and heist film.
Getting detailed looks into the cons the couple pulled off was pretty captivating.
The actors playing law enforcement officers all looked conceivably real. There was no glamour casting.
The cheapness of the whole aesthetic was kind of fun.
The Bad:
As I said earlier, this was essentially two different movies spliced together, and it gave me too much whiplash to be effective.
The actors who played smaller roles were all pretty cringe.
The sound was bizarrely bad at times. Most scenes that took place in larger rooms had very quiet and echoey spoken dialogue. I kept yelling, “Get a boom mic for god’s sake! A boom mic!” I know the budget was miniscule but come on!
There was often just too much talk in offices and not enough action outside. The first part of the film was especially afflicted with this.
There were some giggle-inducing film projections/rear projections in scenes. The office building windows and the holes in the ceiling in the night club were the best/worst examples.
Roger and Mary's final scheme was so completely unrealistically bonkers that it was impossible not to be distracted by it.
The minutia of the murder case that played a role in the 2nd half of the film was very uninteresting. I just didn’t care about the “whodunnit.”
The very end was so absurdly fanciful I couldn’t take it. How on earth could you end a noir like it was a romantic comedy?
The “Voice of God” style narrator was particularly awkward and bad. Even worse was the cameo by the actual LA Sheriff! He looked like a deer in headlights and sounded more wooden than the desk he sat behind.
