For what it’s worth here’s my opinion on Chris leaving.
Have any of you tried to stop a 13 year old doing something or change their mind?
The secret of parenting is that they let you be in charge. They listen and they may fight and argue with you but they accept ultimately that you are in charge. You as the parent say yes or no and that is the way it is. There can be discussions there can be compromise but the choice is theirs to accept your ‘rule’
Parents rule at the consent of the child until they don’t. Once a young person works out they can say no I don’t want that how can you make them? Without violence? without threats without breaking what’s already unraveling?
Put your foot down? Lock them in? Take away everything? Punish them? Punish them some more?
You still can’t make them talk to you, look at you? You can’t make them eat? You can’t even make them move unless you get physical.
At 13 you think you’re right, you’re starting to think adults, especially your parents are anywhere from embarrassing to annoying to the worst people you know who can’t possibly understand anything.
You just got home with a lady you like quite a lot and you dad is hugging your dead mother.
You just saw your dead mother.
Your dad is a cheater
A cheater and a liar
With your dead mother
Nothing else matters the man you thought you knew, your dad, just vanished before your eyes.
I think I might like a break too. If Chris isn’t ready to talk then he’s not. And yes he has grandparents who took advantage of all that inappropriately and with glee it seems and yes Eddie’s broken and failing and he’s lost himself again, after thinking he’d made it through to the other side. Which makes it worse.
He’s always tried to parent Chris kindly, treat him like a person and at thirteen you do have opinions you have agency you have a voice. Yes you still need support you still need adults but you know your own mind. Even if you’re not making good choices, even if you’re just reacting.
Ramon and Helena should have said no to Chris. Not yet. Or yes but only for a week or two then we come back and talk. They should have helped. I’m not sure this is helping.
Eddie made sure Chris knows he’s loved he’s hoping it’s only for a while. He’s hoping for forgiveness. He’s not exactly doing well anyway.
What was he going to do - lock him in his room and wait.
Eddie is being a good parent - at least he’s trying to be
Mr and Mrs Diaz - not doing such a good job of parenting their own son.
Agree disagree it’s your choice just don’t get mad at me.

Context
Tumblr media
(Gif: @wellcollapse)
The cut scene that posted—Chris telling Eddie that his girlfriend Penny broke up with him—adds a large amount of context to the events in 7x10. I’ve already posted some thoughts about Shannon and Eddie and the lake (here), so let’s talk about Chris and his girlfriend(s) and his relationship with his mother. It explains some up-in-the-air questions that arose from 7x10, particularly why Chris called his grandparents and didn’t call Buck.
In 7x01, Eddie discovers that Chris is dating multiple girls. He asks Buck to talk with him. This brings to light Chris’s feelings about his mother and her leaving Texas, and results in Eddie giving him her letter. The end result (which is really only confirmed by the cut clip), seems to be that Chris followed Buck’s advice and picked one girl to focus his attention on.
Tumblr media
(Gif: @mythtakens)
Like most middle school relationships, it comes to an end. In the cut scene from 7x09, Chris tells Eddie that Penny (the girl he had over for video games in 7x01) broke up with him. No matter what we, as adults, might think of those cute middle school hand-holding situationships, Chris is most likely devastated. He and Eddie chat, and Eddie ends up telling him about how he met Shannon, at a lake near the Senior Diaz’s house in El Paso. He gives him HOPE that he, too, will find a Shannon one day.
Tumblr media
(Gif: @ayo-edebiri)
Shortly after this (also in 7x09), Chris walks in on the Ghost of Shannon, standing in his house.
Tumblr media
So, in season 7, Chris has received these messages about dating:
“We don’t cheat on girls.” (the conversation with Buck in 7x01)
“Girls actually do leave.” (the breakup revealed during the 7x09 cut scene; Eddie’s confirmation that “They do that.”)
“Dad is a cheater.” (the scene at the end of 7x09)
”All of Dad’s girlfriends leave.” (The off-screen breakup with Marisol, combined with knowing that Shannon left, and the whole Ana thing.)
”What was the point of picking one girl when she was going to leave anyway?” (Combination of 7x01, cut scene, and end scene of 7x09)
He receives these messages about Shannon:
“Mom loved me, but she left anyway.” (The letter in 7x01)
“Dad met Mom when he was my age.” (The cut scene from 7x09)
“Mom came back.” (Season 2; rehashed in 7x01)
“Dad isn’t over Mom.” (Question asked & not answered in 7x09 cut scene; in-his-face takeaway from Kim encounter in 7x09)
“I’m not over Mom.”
So, between the whole drama about the multiple girlfriends and the reactions of Eddie and Buck, and the Dead Mom Trauma in 7x01 (I.e. the letter and his feelings, which he’s found some closure for, but “comforted” doesn’t mean “fixed”), and the things revealed in the 7x09 cut scene, I can really see that the events of 7x09 were the straw that broke the camel’s back, rather than the isolated incident that editing made them appear to be.
That’s why this scene was important. We’ve all been trying to figure out why Chris didn’t go to Buck or why his very good relationship with Eddie didn’t make him think a bit more before going nuclear (I.e. calling his grandparents). But the Penny breakup brings this full circle.
He probably feels as betrayed about the 7x01 conversation (the relationship advice from Buck, which he obviously took and ran with) as he does by his dad’s hypocrisy and by walking in on the Ghost of Shannon. Add to that:
(1) The fact that she (Ghost Shannon) was IN HIS HOUSE (his safe place)
(2) Penny and Marisol are both gone (so why shouldn’t he leave, too)
(3) He’s had a recent reminder of where Shannon was at his age (that lake in Texas)
Well, it makes a lot more sense. Context is everything, and we didn’t really have the full context to interpret Chris’s actions.

my hand slipped and i wrote 2K of About To Be Cheating Cheaters buddie (sorry tommy!). here's one half of what i've gotten down so far.
.
“That's why I'm here, hermano. To make your drunk ass drink lots of water, and to stop all that spiralling shit in its detrimental tracks. If you haven't figured it out by now, I don't much like things that hurt my family.”
Eddie's head is still spinning.
“Hermano? Really Buck? I've only ever been a brother, never had one. But I'm pretty sure any brother of mine wouldn't look a lick like you.”
Dios, Eddie is so, so drunk, and such a horrible person for being so, so glad that Buck is here, with Eddie, instead of someplace with his boyfriend that Eddie definitely does not want to be thinking about.
Eddie needs Buck like oxygen right now because Eddie is a pathetic mess. What the fuck would some perfect pilot that's built like a brick shithouse know about being a pathetic mess? Screw you, Iceman—Buck and Eddie are the Maverick and Goose of this movie, fuck you very much. Always have been. Always will be.
Buck's eyebrows are trying to migrate and join up with his hairline. “Oh, really? What, I'm not good-looking enough to be a Diaz? Is that it?”
That is very much not it.
Eddie teases, “Aw, guapo, you worried you're not pretty enough for me?” because he clearly left his last bit of sanity in the hook and ladder down on Main. He feels like he's having an out of body experience, looking down on himself from up on the ceiling and can practically see his blood fizzing beneath his skin like someone injected popping candy into his veins while he wasn't looking.
What the fuck is he doing?
Buck isn't as drunk as Eddie, but he suddenly looks stone cold sober, blinking furiously through whatever emotions are gripping him right now. Eddie can usually tell what Buck is feeling without having to so much as look at him, but there's currently so much candied rum in his system that it's numbing his higher brain function.
“Uh, that's, uh—it's—that's not exactly what I was getting at, Eddie,” Buck stumbles, trying to right himself from the suckerpunch.
“So what exactly are you getting at, Evan.”
Eddie never uses that name. Not once before telling Buck about changing his will, and never since. He'd only opted back in that hospital room to call Buck by what is printed on his birth certificate to get his full attention, so he understood that what Eddie was telling him was really fucking important. Back when Eddie had very almost told Buck how he feels about him, before bailing on the notion at the last millisecond like the chicken-shit he is and always has been.
Tommy calls Buck Evan. Only ever calls him Evan. As if he knows the first fucking thing about Eddie's best friend! Eddie thinks that at this exact moment in time, regardless of how the guy is supposed to be his shiny new pal, he might just despise Tommy Kinard with every fibre of his being. Who the hell does he think he is, flying in on his helicopter like every day is leg day, with his stupid, funny fake-mouth-static and those stupid, handsome cheekbones, pissing all over Eddie's territory with his probably Incredible Hulk sized dick and trying to take Eddie's Buck away from him?
You're mine, he thinks. Almost says it, too. And he might say it yet, if Buck keeps on squirming as beautifully as he is right now, the raging heat of his twitchy body searing into Eddie's side like a branding iron that states If Lost Return To Evan Buckley.
And I'm yours, he thinks, and knows it to be true. Knows he could make it true, that it could maybe be everything, potentially, if only Eddie stopped being such a yellow-belly.
Fuck Kinard. Fuck all of them that have come before and after Eddie. None of them have loved, or love Buck the way he does. None of them. Eddie knows this because he loves Buck so much it somehow fortifies his heart to make it able to force its way through the spaces between his cracked rib cage and break free to beat wildly in double-time, bleeding, bleeding, bleeding.
Eddie, feeling drunker by the second, hasn't looked away from Buck in a hot minute—Buck who now looks like he might be having a minor stroke. Stretching across to plop his glass clumsily onto the coffee table and missing the coaster by a Texas mile, Eddie then dries any possibility of lingering water droplets from his moustache with a clunky swipe of his thumb and forefinger, before turning to face Buck with a lot more cock-surety than sense.
Buck is Eddie's best friend. His partner. The man who loves his kid. The man who Eddie gave his kid to because they both love his kid that much. He's the lunatic who has unofficially moved in with Eddie—because Eddie has driven their kid away with his epic levels of bullshit—even though he currently has a boyfriend.
Buck, Buck, Buck, who Eddie is now positive should be his boyfriend.
Licking his lips, he feels like he's forgetting something. Like maybe all of the reasons he's steered himself clear of this iceberg for so long—only he's far too drunk, and far too selfish, to try to remember that or care.
Buck swallows, Adam's apple bobbing in his throat, and Eddie wants fervently to get his teeth and tongue around it. Then he's muttering, “Eddie, I just meant—”
“Yeah?” Eddie asks, begs, demands.
His fingertips have found the soft fabric of Buck's deep blue waffle-weave shirt, where it's covering the expanse of his chest. He's trying to get to his heart, he realises, feeling blindly for any sign of double-time, wanting to taste the blood in its chambers the way Buck has tasted Eddie's.
“Yeah,” Buck breathes, mirroring Eddie which doesn't make a lick of sense apart from the fact that it makes perfect sense, to Eddie.
Eddie's cheeks are burning but he thinks fuck it, throwing the both the extinguisher and life ring overboard and going full steam ahead.

Because apparently we love the marvel references here lol Buck knowing Eddie was wearing “the good cologne” was giving Loki saying in episode 1 of his show that he knew that Tony Stark time travelled because he smelled the cologne’s of 2 Tony’s 😭😭💀 no but like Buck was so cute and the scene was cute indeed but like cheater Eddie who made that decision that’s my 13 reason why like WTF who do I fight that’s not so Edmundo Diaz of him I guess that could send him as well to more catholic guilt but WTF
WTF indeed anon.
I loved the small buckley-diaz scene and the cologne comment had me 👀
Anywho... this is where were at. A messy cheating storyline (again) because neither of those boys know how to deal with difficult feelings. They deserve each other at this point.

ooooh how about jealous, kiss and realize
Hi Nolan 🩵
Jealous - Welcome Home Cheater (I honestly expected to find all three here... I must fix that):
Buck's not jealous, of course not, it's just... Eddie blew him off when he invited him to go go-karting, but jumped at the chance to join Tommy when he mentioned wanting a co-pilot.
Kiss - The sub Eddie fic
Eddie sighs into the kiss as it turns softer. Buck holds him closer, so there isn’t an inch of space between them. The heat, the never ending sparks coursing through Eddie’s veins still remains, but the inferno has turned to a controlled blaze. It’s a dance, a push and pull that leaves Eddie’s head spinning.
Realize - Danger Prone Diaz (untitled)
Buck flips their positions, only he didn't realize how close to the edge of the bed they were.
Wip game: send me a word and I'll find it in my wips

So I just watched Eddie cheat on Marisol live and in HD huh???
I don’t like that woman at all but a cheater stays a cheater and I thought better of my Edmundo😒😒
Anyways… i think this whole plotline solidifies the Demisexual Eddie Diaz theory. Eddie saw Shannon doppelgänger in the store and all logic immediately left him (because she literally looks exactly like his ex-wife/best friend) that just proves that for him an emotional connection overrides everything.
He walked into the store and shamelessly teased and flirted with her, and not just ignored or forgot but outright denied the existence of his girlfriend despite being given the perfect opening to mention her.
That man is so Demi, cause as soon as he saw doppelgänger he forgot Marisol completely 😂 like spaced out while sitting across from her level ignoring.
One step (hopefully) closer to queer Eddie Diaz.

Welcome back. This time it's even more delusional.
Featuring additions from beloved contributors and some Olympic-level reaches for episodes 15-18. But if this is the Olympics then god help me I will step onto that podium as the most insane clown in this depraved, abandoned circus.
Okay, first, from @captainragtag, a truly galaxy-brain interpretation of Buck's storyline in 612. I'll let them explain:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second, @wewatchweewoo made the brilliant observation about 614 and Buck saying "nobody likes a cheater." That's such a rich line coming from Buck that clearly, there must be a reason he's feeling some type of way about it at that point specifically, and literally what else could be the cause of that other than the fact that Eddie is dating and he and Buck have an arrangement (currently operating on the fwb wavelength with knowledge of future episodes) and Buck is being pissy but he can't be more direct about it, so he has to vague Eddie in a way that no one else would suspect.
And the third and final brilliant addition is from @buck-coded. Again, I'll let them explain:
Tumblr media
Moving on to 615, we are operating under the assumption that the secret relationship throughout s6 has been a poorly communicated friends-with-benefits arrangement. This is piggybacking off of the previous ideas about 614 but I'd like to add some further analysis about why, then, Eddie would be so quick to accept Pepa's interference.
They've been fwb for a long time at that point and while they have clearly both been very enthusiastic about the arrangement, it hasn't evolved or shown any sign of potentially becoming something more in the future (they are both cowards, please understand.) So while Eddie is very happy to keep being fwb with Buck, he is also feeling like his time is running out, because he can have only a part of him but never the full thing and Buck will eventually find someone to move on with. So, despite the arrangement, he does feel lonely and he thinks he should at least try to move on. Seeing this, Buck himself comes to the conclusion that his time with Eddie is running out and jumps back into the dating game (they always start dating at the same time do you think this is a coincidence???).
The 615 graveyard scene is where everything changes. Because Eddie had taken the first step, but he wasn't being that serious about it. He was just doing it as a precaution but that didn't mean he wanted to stop what he had with Buck if he didn't have to. But Buck had already taken Eddie's decision to start dating again as a complete rejection and thrown himself into dating head first, meeting Natalia and telling Eddie she sees him. And I am so sorry to do this to you in the middle of the delusional secret relationship buddie post but...we have entered the pining era. In my humble but true opinion, it is at this point that they kind of just both unspokenly agree to stop being fwb. Eddie's pining can be seen from space throughout the graveyard scene and 616 as he so yearningly examines Chimney's engagement ring then proceeds to shamelessly stare at Buck throughout the rest of the scene. It may not be directly relevant to the secret relationship aspect of the theory, but a loud moment to consider is the camera pan to Buck and Eddie sitting basically in each other's laps as Bobby talks about madney belonging together.
617 is essentially more of the same with them both trying to move on and being pathetic about it, but an interesting connection to consider is the absence is a presence aspect of the final date between Buck and Natalia. Buck cooking at home is something that has been solely associated with the Diazes throughout s6 and we see him trying to cook for Natalia in 617. However, she freaks out when Kameron, a clear symbol of Buck's relationship with fatherhood, shows up and leaves before eating any of the food he made for her. It's Kameron who ends up eating the food he made instead. Considering it's clear that Kameron and her child are no actual threat to Natalia, it's their roles as Buck's potential child and his other parental figure that are the threat, which can easily be substituted by Christopher and Eddie. Natalia came back because she realized she overreacted about Kameron and the baby, but how will she react when she realizes that those roles still exist in Buck's life, she was just looking at the wrong people?
618 leaves them in the same place but, as I've mentioned before in other posts, it is very telling that Eddie and Christopher end the season on the couch just as Buck decides to go looking for one.
Basically, season 6 does end with them broken up but there is all the evidence to reasonably assume Buck and Eddie have fucked before and shall, on some bright sunny day, fuck again.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
(ALT theory: they don't stop fucking, they just get Natalia and Marisol to agree to regular foursomes.)
Buddie Secret Relationship Conspiracy Manifesto
Hello. Welcome to possibly the most delusional buddie theory yet. This is a collaboration with @swiftiebuckleys, and as such I would like to cite our sources accordingly: dude, trust us.
Okay so I know a lot of people have talked about the theory of buddie possibly being in a secret relationship that is even a secret from the audience during season 6. For me, this started during 6A. It started because I was thinking about how 601 started with such a poignant and domestic Buckley-Diaz family scene that, as a part of a premier that was meant to establish where the characters are after four months of hiatus, told us Buck, Eddie and Christopher are living in each other's pockets as their own little family at the start of the season (I even wrote about this in this meta I posted while 6a was airing lmao).
But then for the rest of 6A there really wasn't any significant on-screen buddie or Buckley-Diaz moments, even though there was plenty that was implied at, including: Buck and Eddie planning to go to Marisol's house to help with repairs without the rest of the firefam, Buck and Chris hanging out so Chris potentially telling Buck the secret about skipping school even though he didn't tell Eddie, Buck and Eddie sitting in the back of the waiting room together separate from the rest of the firefam while they waited for news about Karen, and Eddie giving Hoover to Buck and convincing him to keep him even though his building doesn't allow dogs. What do all but one of these moments have in common? They're moments where Buck and Eddie were either alone or away from anyone who would know them from the rest of the gang and wouldn't feel the need to hide their relationship. When at work, Buck and Eddie had a reasonably normal amount of on-screen interactions, but it was only their moments happening outside of work that was pushed to the off-screen. (Bonus: one on-screen 6A moment that lives in my head rent-free and screams of secret relationship is that shot of them stepping into frame together and holding eye contact while the song lyrics in the bg go "I want your sex and your affection when I'm holding you close" in 609.)
However, while this^ is all well and good, it's 6B that really gives the secret relationship theory its wings.
Episode 10 gave us the lightning strike with a sequence that was shot almost entirely from the perspective of Eddie. While in the initial aftermath of the strike we see the shock on Hen, Chimney, and Bobby's faces, the scene is in slow-motion and muted until Eddie realizes what's going on and we watch every minute facial expression on his face as the horror dawns and he snaps into action. Eddie's reaction is what sparks everyone else's movement and then we see him completely forgo his own injuries and his own safety to save Buck. In the secret relationship trope, the near-death experience is a lot of the time what forces the couple to blow their cover and reveal their relationship. That didn't happen here as buddie were already close enough to warrant the strength of Eddie's reaction and Buck was unresponsive and there wasn't any time to lose. HOWEVER, episode 11 and the absence of a scene with Eddie alone at Buck's bedside can be explained by the fact that he couldn't be shone there or his bedside confessions would have given them away to the audience. As it is, other than Margaret and Maddie, Buck's mother and sister, he's the only one dressed in all black, his composure crumbling and unable to make eye contact with Buck's body in the hospital bed, the perfect picture of a grieving widow.
Episode 12 has the infamous couch scene which is meant to signal to the audience that Eddie is the couch Buck has been searching for, even if Buck himself doesn't know it. However, in the context of the secret relationship theory, what if the total lack of reaction from Eddie about Buck falling asleep on his couch is because they already know this?
Episode 13 has the infamous poker scene and this is where the theory actually diverges for a lot of people. Going with the original theory that buddie have been together since before 6A, this would explain Buck's lack of reaction to Eddie telling him to get dressed up and taking him out on what is essentially a date - he wasn't surprised or suspicious because it wasn't unusual. If you go back and watch the scene, you'll notice that it opens right when Buck and Eddie are approaching the door and about to be in the presence of other firefighters, but initially they're walking away from a dark alley while fixing their clothes - why would they need to fix their clothes unless they got messed up in the first place? Why wouldn't they show us the before or after of the poker scene, why only the parts where they're in the presence of other people from the department? Plus, Eddie really was looking TOO blatantly hungry in that entire scene, and he wasn't really hiding it from Buck - maybe because he's allowed, and expected, to look. This isn't even to mention the scenes of Buck, Eddie, and Christopher being a family, but I will go back to those later.
Where this episode splits this theory is the alternate potential for them to have gotten together after the poker game (my initial post after the episode first came out.) This would have been the perfect opportunity because there's really no way that if they weren't already together, the thought that this might be a date hadn't crossed Buck's mind (and, again, Eddie really did look too fucking horny in that scene it wasn't something you could ignore.) The next outside of work scene we see the Buckley-Diaz' in is the baking scene with Buck and Christopher. Eddie's location is completely unknown - he could be on shift, he could be running errands, he could be with Pepa - but the fact that Buck and Chris are together and baking for his class and planning dinner really drives home the fact that they are a family once again. However, the easy confidence of Buck parenting Christopher and the way he glowed with happiness in that moment would make even more sense if he had had his place in the Diaz family as Eddie's partner and Christopher's other parent confirmed to him.
One way to possibly combine the two theories is if we assume that Buck and Eddie were actually fwb throughout 6A (an idea given to me by @captainragtag) but actually got together after the poker scene. ANOTHER way is if we assume they've only been fwb, even after the poker scene. Them being fwb would potentially explain some holes in the theory, moments where they should have had a bigger reaction to something or known something beforehand if they were in a relationship (kind of the sperm donor arc and Eddie's reaction, but that could also be explained by Eddie's lack of reaction being because he already knew and was just pretending to be finding out for the first time with everyone else.)
Going into episode 14, all of these theories could explain the *gestures vaguely* everything about Eddie's storyline in the episode. If they're hiding a relationship, the absence of any mentions of Buck when talking about Eddie (and Christopher) being alone would make sense, especially after how pointedly the previous episode showed that Eddie is always spending his free time with Buck, with or without Christopher. It would also explain Buck's extremely unsubtle date-ruining advice - either they're together and Buck just doesn't want Eddie to go on the date because he doesn't want to share even to keep up pretenses, or they're fwb and Buck is jealous and afraid to lose Eddie and their relationship if Eddie starts actually dating. Also, considering how many pure fanfic tropes the writers have used before, it's safe to assume they have at least a baseline knowledge of how buddie are written by fans and what's the first trope every fanfic reader in this fandom learns about? Christopher's first and foremost wingman duty is to pack his stuff and go to a sleepover so his dads can do unholy things to each other. Christopher being at a sleepover when Pepa told Eddie to come over and him insisting that he was alone at home when just last episode we saw buddie spending all their time off shift together is just a little too sus if you ask me. Another secret relationship moment in the episode is Eddie going for the wrong gear shift in his own car. He initially reached for the gear shift on the center console when that's not where it is in his truck. But do you know where the gear shift is in a jeep? I'll give you one guess. Do we know anyone who owns a jeep? I'll give you another guess. This would make total sense since we know Eddie is a passenger princess and Buck would be driving them everywhere if they were in a relationship. Even when Buck isn't the one driving, Eddie would be much more likely to borrow his car more often if they were in a relationship and basically living together.
If this all doesn't convince you, I would like to leave you with the reminder of a moment that I'm sure has haunted all of us since 614 came out:
Tumblr media
Actors are always aware when they're on camera and even if they aren't, the dozens of production people, including the director, would be. Do with that what you will.
(If anyone has anything they'd like to add to this feel free to message me or send me an ask and I'll make edits! And, I mean, this is all just for fun not to be taken seriously, but if there is a point that you think really brings the theory down also feel free to send me an ask about that lets see if I can provide a suitable explanation.)
edit: another thing to keep in mind as pointed out by the brilliant @swiftiebuckleys is the precedent set by 606 "Tomorrow" for flashbacks showing the start of a relationship.

Rising to the Challenge
Written for @911fluffweek : Day 7 -  Free choice.
All my love to the wonderful @alilypea for beta-reading this for me and to @noxsoulmate who provided the original prompts.  Go read their fics!
Pairing: Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley/Eddie Diaz
Rating: T
Word Count: 894
Summary: Maddie dares Buck to kiss someone in the bar for $20....
Can also be read on A03.
*****
"So let me get this right," Buck said, looking back and forth between Maddie and Chim.  "You are daring me, a measly $20, to randomly kiss someone in this bar?"  The whole team was at their favourite karaoke bar near the station, and Maddie wasn’t letting up on her attempt to set Buck up with someone.
Maddie nodded eagerly while Chim was looking a tad queasy, feeling unsettled at his girlfriend's eagerness to set up her brother.  "And an extra $20 if they kiss you back." She added, doubling down on the original dare, waving the two bills in her hand.  Chim groaned audibly at the latest addition, hunching down in his seat as if he was trying to disappear into the booth itself.
Buck glanced around the room, grinning as his eyes settled on Eddie.  He slowly made his way over to his boyfriend, trying not to laugh at the easy money he was about to make.  "Hey there, handsome," Buck said with a grin, obviously checking out his partner from head to toe.
Eddie shifted uneasily, not used to this sort of attention from Buck in public, but couldn't help but feel a bit flattered as well.  He let out a small smile as Buck moved closer, placing a hand on Eddie's waist.
Glancing up at his boyfriend, the noise of the bar - including the hoots and cheers from their teammates faded into the background, as Buck leaned down slightly to capture his lips, his tongue sliding in to explore his mouth gently.  Eddie couldn't help but to moan into the kiss, reaching his hands up to grip Buck's curly hair and pulling himself flush against Buck as they continued to make out against the bar.
Finally, remembering that they were in the middle of a bar surrounded by their teammates, Buck pulled back reluctantly, letting his forehead rest against Eddie's, trying to catch his breath.  "Will you marry me?" The words came tumbling out of Buck's mouth as he gazed into Eddie's eyes.  This wasn't how he had planned to propose, but he meant every word of it.  He wanted to spend the rest of his life with Eddie and with Christopher.
Eddie nodded, finally managing to utter a quiet yes as he leaned in to kiss his boyfriend - wait fiance - again.
XXXXX
After all the cheers, handshakes, and congratulations, Buck and Eddie made their way back over, hand in hand, to where Maddie and Chimney were sitting.
Expecting more congratulations and likely some hugs, Buck was surprised when Maddie stood up and punched him lightly in the shoulder instead.  “I’ve spent all this time wondering and worrying about you. You didn’t think of me once?” Maddie said, waving her arms around in frustration.
“Uh, sorry?” Buck said, exchanging confused looks with Chimney and Eddie.  Chimney gave a slight shrug of his shoulders to indicate that he had no idea what Maddie was going on about.
“You should have told me that you were dating Eddie!” Maddie exclaimed, punching him again in the same shoulder, a bit harder this time.
“Maddie, Maddie, could you please avoid hitting my boyfriend?” Eddie asked, stepping in front of Buck, his arms up as if he was confronting a frightened animal.
“Fiance,” both Buckley siblings corrected, looking at each other and then bursting out laughing.  Maddie finally calmed down enough to smother both Eddie and Buck in huge hugs, with Chimney repeating her actions right after.
The four of them sat down as Maddie motioned for another pitcher of beer for the table.  Buck reached out his hand for his money, but Maddie simply shoved a mug of beer in his hand instead.  “No money for you, cheater,” she replied, handing the extra money to their waiter as a tip instead.
“What’s this about money?” Eddie asked, a confused look on his face as he glanced back and forth between Maddie and Buck.
“Boy do I have a story to fill you in on,” Chimney said with a grin, ignoring the threatening glares he was receiving from both Buckleys.  As he started to explain the bet, Eddie’s grin only got wider until he started laughing out loud.
“So you mean I have Maddie to thank for a marriage proposal?”  Eddie finally choked out, still laughing hard.
“Hey, no, no!  That was all me,” Buck said, pointing at his chest.  “It wasn’t how I planned on asking, but that was all my idea,” Buck confessed, wanting to make it clear to his partner that the proposal was absolutely not Maddie’s idea.  At that point, Chimney was able to pull Maddie away from the two, feeling like they needed a bit more privacy for this conversation.
Once they were on their own, Eddie reached across the table and grabbed both of Buck’s hands.  “So you’ve been thinking about proposing….” Eddie asked, not really elaborating further.
“Since the first day I met you,” Buck confessed, blushing a deep shade of red that only got darker as Eddie pulled him into a passionate kiss that promised much more later.  Not willing to wait any longer, Buck broke the kiss, grabbing Eddie’s arm and pulling him out of the bar, barely remembering to wave bye to their team on their way out.  It was time to show Eddie just how much he loved him but in private this time around.

happy chapter! yes I know I missed last week and I've updated the chapter count to reflect. my state is cold as fuck and also somehow on fire and the Big Sad hit me real hard so I had to take a weekend to be dead. love you all.
Chapters: 3/4 Fandom: 9-1-1 (TV) Relationships: Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV)
”Alright, Eddie.”
No, it was not alright. It was not alright at all.
“I’m starting to worry about you.”
Eddie felt his bed dip as Buck sat beside him, groaning in response, rolling over in a desperate attempt to hide his shame.
“Chris is about ready to call in for a rope rescue, and you’re still not out of bed. I may not understand why you’re meeting your parents for lunch today, but you are, so get up.”And therein lied his shame. Eddie didn’t need a reminder. His parents had spent all of ten minutes in his living room the night prior—annoyingly vague about why they were there in the first place, insisting that even though they were just ‘passing through’ they still wanted to spend some time with their grandson.
Not their son. Just their grandson. Which was totally fine and didn’t bother Eddie at all.
Eddie had spent every one of those ten minutes clenching his teeth so hard he thought he would pop a crown, but ultimately agreed to their request (maybe a little quicker than he would have liked, but he had done less for more when it came to making sure Chris stayed in bed). As bad as that was, though, he wasn’t sure what was worse—the fact that he was so hesitant to spend some time with his parents, or the fact that the moment they left, all he felt was guilt.
He knew that he wasn’t the crazy one here; but even then, it was hard to ignore how it sounded, feeling so unhappy—so hesitant—to spend time with his own parents. He knew exactly how it looked for him, because what kind of son was chomping at the bit to rip his own parents head off, just for wanting to spend some time with their family?
It should have been a perfectly reasonable request. It should have been something Eddie was happy to do. It should not have been something that set Eddie’s teeth on edge, that tripped up his sixth sense like no other, the soldier's sense that he had developed in Afghanistan buzzing in the base of his skull like a beehive. It felt like something was about to go incredibly wrong, and it felt fucking disgusting to have that reaction triggered by his own parents, but he couldn’t deny that he was afraid history would repeat itself.
Maybe he really was a garbage person.
The guilt only got worse, surprise surprise, after they left and Eddie discovered Buck standing in the kitchen, where Eddie had told him to stay. He had all but forgotten about Buck. How could he forget an entire person?
Garbage person, strike two.
Eddie wound himself in his blanket even tighter, guilt and shame doing little to motivate him on getting out of bed, but his silence was short lived as his blanket burst into flames just long enough for him to yelp and bolt upright before it completely disintegrated. “You—that’s not—you cheater!”
Buck just laughed, the bastard, idly examining the nails on one hand as he shoved Eddie out of bed with the other. “I’m a demon, you dolt. Of course I cheated. Now,” he started, pushing Eddie upright and all but herding him toward the closet, “why don’t you get dressed and tell me what’s really going on?”
Eddie felt a lump sink into his stomach as he stood up, a harsh breath coming out of his nose as he yanked a pair of pants off of a hanger.
“I’m scared, Buck.”
Either out of shock or respect, Buck remained silent, and Eddie could only spare a glance over his shoulder before he ducked his head, dressing haphazardly. “The last time I saw my parents they tried to... to take him. They were trying to take him from me, and my response was to literally pack Chris up and move across the country. They didn’t reach out for years—it’s been years, Buck—not when Abuela broke her hip, not when Chris changed schools, not when Shannon died. A year goes by, and nothing. And then they send a card, and then I meet you, and now they’re just... here again. And I think they’re going to try again, I think they’re going to—“
Eddie looked down at his hands as he felt the fabric of the shirt he was holding tear beneath his fingertips, staring at the hole, like he couldn’t believe he had just worried a hole through it. He looked up to Buck, guilt and misery written on his face as he tossed the garment aside, hiding his face in his hands as he rubbed at his eyes, dragging his hands down his face shortly after.
“You are going to lunch and I’ll be nearby, but Eddie, listen.” Eddie didn’t realize he was spiraling until Buck stepped forward, grabbing his hands and giving a firm squeeze as he shook his head. When Eddie looked up again, all he could see was Buck—eyes glowing, mouth set, teeth maybe just a little sharper than they were a moment before. “I will never, ever let them—or anyone else—take him from you. Ever.”
--
“…and Mark says that Washington has one of the biggest volcanoes, but I don’t think that’s true. Ms. Flores and Mr. Beeman says that Mars has volcanoes too, even bigger than any of the ones we have here on Earth!”
“I’m sure it does, buddy. Maybe that’s why it’s the red planet? All the magma?”
“No, Dad, the magma is underground, when the volcano erupts it turns into—hey!” Eddie had a smile on his face as he reached over to steal one of Chris’ fries, grinning as his kid squawked, pushing his dads’ hand away playfully. Their afternoon together had started easy enough; Chris had stolen the show easily, directing the conversation through himself in that effortless way kids managed to do, talking about his school, his friends, his day to day. To this day, Eddie would never understand how this kid had him wrapped around his finger so easily—all it took was the bat of an eye for Eddie to swing through the drive through on the way to the park, and suddenly he was meeting his parents at a picnic table near the playground with arms full of chicken tenders and fries.
Not a great look. Whatever.
Chris had been every bit as ecstatic to see his grandparents as Eddie knew (feared?) he would be, propelling himself forward at a speed that would have made Eddie panic had Buck not spent some significant time over the past few months working on Chris’ physical therapy.
He wasn’t sure if it was a blessing or a curse, how easily it was to use his son as a distraction from whatever nightmarish scenario his parents wanted to bring up, but even that grateful moment was cut short as his father chuckled, reaching forward to tousle Chris’ hair playfully.
“Mark, Flores, Beeman, I can’t even keep up anymore kiddo. Sounds like you’ve had a busy third grade in your new scho—“
“Fourth grade, dad.”
“What?”
“Fourth grade, Dad. Chris is in fourth grade.”
Eddie regretted the words the moment they left his mouth. As good as it felt to even attempt to put his father in his place, he could feel the exact moment that both of his parents swiveled their laser-like attention to him. They were smiling, sure, but Eddie felt like he was back to being a kid again, waiting for the inevitable slip up that would get him grounded.
“Fourth grade, right.” Eddie smiled tensely as his father nodded, gesturing between he and his son. “Of course, we would know that if you bothered to call once in a while. We don’t hear from you on Christmas, birthdays, nothing.
“You know, you can always call us too, not send some letter on the anniversary of my wife’s death like a complete—”
“If we didn’t hear from Pepa regularly, how would we know that you and Chris were even alive?”
“Dad—“
“But we’re doing good.”
Eddie felt his jaw click shut as Chris spoke, his heart swelling with pride as both of his parents turned their gaze again. His mother at least had the decency to look mildly guilty—his father, no such luck.
“Of course you are, kiddo. We’re just trying to make sure that your dad has enough help. There’s been a lot of big changes since you both left Texas—two new schools, new grades, new teachers, your father’s new job, and—“
The death of Chris’ mother, Eddie’s mind provided, angry once again that Shannon was being so disregarded by people who were supposed to be her family.
“Yeah, but we’re still doing good.” Chris said, not looking up from the fries he was dunking into ketchup, smearing only a little bit on his upper lip as he shoved the handful into his mouth. “Dad says that sometimes the hard things make us stronger, but things aren’t even that hard. And Buck says that I have a lot of, um. Initiative! And they both say I’m perfect, so that’s good.”
Eddie didn’t hesitate. He didn’t freeze as his parents turned back over to him, and he certainly didn’t feel his heart sink into his stomach. He just… was trying to un-swallow his tongue, was all. Buck had been the one topic that they had somehow danced around, and Eddie wasn’t sure if he should have been thankful or not that Chris ripped that bandaid off.
He was afraid, to be honest, of that particular aspect of their new lives coming to light—there were few wounds that Eddie’s parents loved rubbing salt in more than his parenting and his financial situation, and suggesting that he had private help for Chris? That was certainly something that hit both of their favorite topics.
“Buck?”
Even if, you know, he had sold his soul instead of provided a monthly stipend.
“Who is Buck?”
“Buck’s great!” Eddie felt himself finally breathe as Chris picked up the slack, his cheerful demeanor impervious to the doom and gloom swarming around both of his grandparents right now. “He’s really smart, and he’s super nice. Plus he makes Dad laugh, which is also nice. And he taught me how to make cootie-catchers! Did you know that they can see into the future?”
Eddie wasn’t panicking. He definitely wasn’t panicking. He definitely wasn’t looking between his mother and his father, trying desperately to come up with something, some excuse, some way to explain the strange name that called Chris perfect and made him laugh.
...Buck really did know how to make him laugh, though. And he did love Chris, that much was clear. And those two thoughts were the only things buzzing around in his head when he opened his fat mouth.
“Edmundo, who is—“
“Buck is my boyfriend.”
You could have heard a pin drop in the moment afterward—his father turned a lovely complexion of purple and red while his mother looked like she had literally seen a ghost, which, hey! Not that far off from the truth. Eddie wasn’t sure if he was just in shock, or if he was having a stroke, or what, but he suddenly felt heavy, grounded for the first time all day, firmly planted in the moment.
So, Eddie decided that Buck was, as of ten seconds ago, his boyfriend. It… made sense, in a way. Fuck, they were basically co-parenting his kid. Chris absolutely adored Buck. And Eddie knew they were sexually and romantically compatible, hell, he knew Buck intimately from his teeth right down to—
“Buck is your what—”
“Buck!”
Eddie was getting very, very tired of being caught by surprise, so it was actually exhausting to have yet another rug pulled out from under him. He turned his head as Chris called out and almost fell out of his seat, seeing who else but the demon in question striding toward them, smiling like the sun,
Honestly, at this point, Eddie should have expected yet another whiplash, but nothing could have prepared him to turn around and see Buck, striding toward him with a big smile on his face, wearing what Eddie could only describe as a “meet the parents” outfit.
If there was another reason as to why Buck would be wearing a sweater vest in California, Eddie would love to hear it.
At the very least, he wasn’t the only one who was shocked. His parents had similar slack jawed looks on their faces as Chris raced toward Buck, who easily wrapped Chris in a huge hug with a “Hey, Superman!” before setting Chris on his hip easily.
Eddie didn’t realize that he was up until he was already moving, trying to think of how he could explain this, but Buck was quick on the draw—keeping Chris balanced in one arm, he drew Eddie in easily with the other, kissing his cheek, murmuring against his skin easily.
“Thought you could use some backup from your boyfriend.”
...oh, right. Demon. Probably heard the whole thing. Cool, that was definitely a cool thing and not embarrassing at all. Eddie felt his own hand fall into Buck’s as they started to walk back toward his parents, a weight writhing in his stomach, only partially subdued by the warmth burning pleasantly through his bones from the small contact he shared with Buck, looking over as Buck set Chris back down, grinning at the giggling ten year old like he wanted nothing more out of this life.
“Mom, Dad, this is Buck. Buck, these are my parents.” Eddie was half tempted to let the moment stew in a silent awkwardness before starting introductions, but Buck spoke up before he could do anything, extending his now-free hand to Eddie’s father first. “Evan Buckley, Eddie’s told me a lot about you. Glad to meet you both.”
Huh. Eddie never thought to even ask if Buck had a first and last name. He always thought it was just, ‘Buck’.
It was comforting for him to see the good, Catholic guilt push both of his parents to accept the greeting with an incredibly pained smile and a handshake of their own, as much as he knew they both wanted to pretend he wasn’t there.
“So! Evan.” His mother started, always the diplomat. “What do you do?”
--
“I’ve known I was bisexual from, like, sophomore year. I brought boyfriends home in highschool! Why is this so hard for you to wrap your head around?”
Long since abandoning the idea of civility, Eddie’s voice was tired, watching as Buck pushed Chris on the swingset across the park from their little picnic bench. Chris had all but dragged Buck over there, subconsciously (or maybe consciously, though Eddie hated thinking of that) feeling when Eddie needed some time to yell at his parents.
Which he definitely, definitely wanted to do. Because Buck was a fucking delight, he answered every question perfectly, he complimented, he flattered, he smiled, and his parents had given him absolutely nothing back.
Now, he was actually finding himself… jealous. Because he would have sold his fucking left leg to just be over there, with his kid and his… Buck, instead of here, with the firing squad. Watching the two of them together was nice, though, definitely a memory he would treasure later—right now, it was providing just enough serotonin to keep him from jumping off a bridge.
“Because you’re not like that, not really!” His mother’s voice was pleading where his fathers had been firm, but Eddie couldn’t really tell the difference between the two when they were both parroting each other. “Eddito, you can’t expect us to believe this is just... happening now. In highschool, that was one thing. I am your mother, we are your parents. No one knows you better than we do!”
Eddie threw his hands into the air, turning it into a wave at the last moment when Chris looked over, trying to keep his face relatively neutral. “Mom, you don’t know the first thing about me, apparently, but I’m starting to think that might go both ways. Maybe I don’t know the two of you, either. For starters, I had no idea my parents were so fucking mean.”
The innocent look his father shot back at him made him want to puke. “Eddie, I can’t help it if pointing out the truth seems a little mean to you. That woman leaves you—”
“That woman was my wife, and she died, next topic.”
“—leaves you,” his father repeated, ignoring what Eddie had said yet again, “and now I’m supposed to believe that you, what. Decided that instead of finding someone who could give Chris what he needs, you just looked for the first man waving a rainbow flag and that was that?”
“Dad, I swear to God, if you insult Buck again we’re done for the day.”
If Eddie was surprised by his own assertiveness, he was alone in that—his father wasted no time in scoffing, shaking his head.
“I have every right to criticize someone spending that much time with my grandson, Edmundo. When was the last time you and Chris went to service? Because if it got around that you were hanging around with someone like that—"
Honestly, there was a certain level of irony here that Eddie had to appreciate. His conservative, religious parents didn’t like his boyfriend (and, wait, how had Eddie attached Buck to that word so easily?)—not because he was a literal demon from Hell, which would have been a perfectly reasonable thing for two good, God fearing Christians to dislike, but because he was a man.
“Hey, Chris, we gotta get going! Come say bye, buddie!”
All that aside, the stunned silence that followed as his father struggled to find his voice was sweet, so sweet, even if it was incredibly short lived.
“Really, Eddie? One little disagreement and you’re just going to walk away? We don’t see Chris for two years, and the first time we visit is when you decide to—”
“Chris is going to come over and say goodbye.” Eddie interrupted, voice dangerously low as he looked up to where Buck was helping him down from the jungle gym. “If you try and play him against me with this, you will lose. If you try to play him against Buck, you will lose and I will laugh at you. But we are going home now, and if you give him any grief about that, if you try to make him feel bad that you don’t come up to visit more often, if you do anything that puts a frown on his face, that’s it. You will never see him again. Ever. And I’ve already kept one promise to you once in the past five minutes, you wanna push for two?”
Eddie wasn’t sure if he was burning that bridge or crossing it, but he was all smiles when Buck and Chris rejoined them, easily slotting himself against Buck’s side as his mother and father each hugged and kissed Chris’ head. Eddie may have let his eagle eye slide a little bit—he could tell my Chris’ giggling protests that they weren’t saying anything uncouth, and even if they were, he knew Buck would put a stop to it before anything else.
Waiting until his mother released Chris, Eddie leaned and kissed Buck on the cheek, tilting his head back to the truck. “Chris, you wanna go with Buck and get buckled in? I’m gonna walk your grandparents to their car.”
Chris took off happily with Buck in tow, and Eddie allowed himself a moment to feel all warm inside watching Buck take Chris’ hand happily as they walked away before he had to turn and face his parents once more. He wasn’t sure if it was a good thing or not that his mother was first to speak, pleading with him while his father unlocked and started their car. “You don’t need to be so sneaky to talk to us, Eddito. You know your father and I just worry.”
“If you want to talk sneaky, let’s talk about your spontaneous road trip to Los Angeles. Have you talked to Abuela? Or Pepa? Because Buck’s met them both, and they both love him. Have you even thought about visiting with them while you’re out here?” Eddie asked, the look on her face answer enough. Eddie sighed, shaking his head as he turned to his father, waiting to see what kind of explanation he would try and bury this in. “You dragged Mom a thousand miles just to interrogate me but you won’t even see the rest of the family?”
He felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end as his mother shut the door to the passengers seat of the car, and Eddie found himself wishing he could just tune this entire topic out as easily as she seemed to when his father met this gaze again.
“I am just trying to get you to do what is right for Chris.”
“That’s just it! I am what’s best for Chris, and I don’t understand why you can’t accept that. He’s my kid, mine, and if you can’t trust me to do what’s best for him,” Eddie paused, “then I don’t know what I can do to get that across.”
He shook his head as he started to walk back to his car. He had really, really hoped that would be the end of it, but he was well aware that would require luck, which he did not have, his father's voice calling after him making that painfully clear.
“You don’t know what you’re doing, Eddie. When your little… mistake comes crashing down, we will be the only ones here for Chris! You can’t just turn your back on family!” Eddie felt his hackles rise as he walked away, ears ringing as he dug his heel into the dirt and looked over his shoulder.
“You turned your back on us—on me—a long time ago.” Eddie’s voice was low as he opened his door, slumping into the driver seat like a string had been cut, hands shaking as he started the truck.
--
“What was your family like?”
Eddie’s voice was soft from his place against Buck’s side, tucked up under one of Buck’s arms, the warmth from the demon eliminating any need for a blanket.
Eddie had made it exactly three blocks (just long enough to be out of view of his parents) before Buck had demanded he pull the car over so they could switch. He was more than happy to give up any responsibility, sliding into the back seat beside his kid, letting himself be completely engrossed in whatever Chris was listening to for the rest of the ride home.
Buck had been the one who drove them home, made dinner, entertained Chris while Eddie showered. Buck was the one who helped with everything along the way just like he always did. And now Buck was literally, literally anchoring him into reality, a comforting weight along Eddie’s side.
He couldn’t tell what Marvel movie was on—honestly, he had kind of stopped caring about any of them after Black Panther—but they were still Chris’ favorite, and he was sure that Chris would have been livid at them for talking if he hadn’t fallen asleep in the first five minutes of the movie. He wanted to save the moment like a snapshot forever; Chris’ head against Buck’s thigh, sprawled out over the both of their laps, his soft snores doing little to mask Eddie’s question (or Buck’s snort in return). “Eddie, my parents were like... completely crazy. Yours are getting up there, but mine were insane. My mom...” Buck shut his mouth as Chris shifted, waiting until he was settled to resume.
“My mom is the reason I got into this position in the first place.”
Eddie felt his face fall as Buck spoke, repositioning himself to sit up a little straighter beside Buck, eyes trained to the demons’ face. Buck was smiling, a sense of bitter irony on his face as he pushed some hair from Chris’ forehead. “When my dad died, my mom... didn’t take it well. She kind of fell off the deep end. Maddie was lucky, she got out before the shit hit the fan. Anyway, my mom and I tried everything—therapy, grief counseling, the power of prayer—seriously.” Buck said, a smile on his face as Eddie laughed, shoulders shaking.
“You’re such an ass.” Buck said, but he was smiling as well, shaking his head. “Anyway, when that didn’t work, my mom tried the other route. She was, like, off the deep end at that point. Talismans, ouija boards, drugging herself up to talk to the dead. I probably should have turned around when I came home to find a pentagram painted on the floor, but.”
Buck shrugged like this was the easiest thing in the world to announce, but Eddie had long since stopped laughing, his jaw a little slack. “Oh, Buck...” He hated how weak his voice sounded, but Buck brushed it off, continuing on.
“No big deal. She sucked at Latin, turns out. I got these devilishly good looks, and she got torn apart by hellfire.” Eddie choked on a laugh as Buck beamed at him, because of course he would be making a pun at a time like this. He stifled the rest of his laugh as Buck squeezed him a little tighter, shaking his head as Chris let out another little snore.
It was easy enough to maneuver Chris into his arms, carrying him to his bedroom, though he certainly wasn’t about to object to Buck’s abject closeness, less than a half step behind Eddie as he put Chris to bed. It wasn’t until he stood to leave did he actually see the look on Buck’s face as he tousled Chris’ hair and said goodnight; it was incredibly soft, dopey even, and the only reason Eddie could make that comparison is because Hen had told him plenty of times that was the same way he looked at Chris.
He just never thought he would see that look on someone else.
Eddie kept his voice low as he closed Chris’ door, starting the walk back to his own room slowly, swaying easily in step beside Buck as he scratched at his head. “Do you remember, when we met, you told me—“
“How incredibly hot you were, how good you were with your tongue, how—“
“Jesus, Buck, no, you fucking pervert. I was going to say, you told me that I wasn’t being normal about this.” Eddie said, and Buck hummed, his hand idly reaching out toward Eddie’s. “What are most of your contracts like?”
Buck snorted as he tugged Eddie into the bedroom, turning off the television, the lights, even locking the front door with a wave of his hand. “I’ve never fucked another contract, if that’s what you’re asking.” he started, pulling the sheets down with another wave and a laugh as Eddie threw his shirt at Buck’s head. “God, Eddie, they’re fucking assholes. Everyone’s power hungry, or money hungry, or just stupid as fuck, seriously. In like, a whole decade, I’ve never had anyone make a contract for someone else before. But you…”
Eddie looked up as Buck pulled him closer again, planting a kiss on his lips. Part of Eddie wanted to shy away, wanted to say the boyfriend thing had all but been an act, but he had given up on that about thirty seconds after Buck told his father to fuck off.
“Even when you were drunk, you only cared about what was best for your son. That’s why it was so easy for me to make a contract with you. Seeing how good of a person you were, how much you loved your kid? No question.”
Buck’s voice had dropped down low as he sunk into the bed, making grabby hands at Eddie until he followed suit, finding himself fitting perfectly in the crook of Buck’s shoulder, resolutely not thinking about the flat plain of muscle beneath his hand as he wrapped an arm around Buck’s midsection. Eddie felt his eyes wander across Buck’s face, his lips, the smooth line of his neck to the little gem on his necklace. “You really think I’m a good father?”
“Eddie, come on.”
When he looked back up at Buck’s face, Eddie felt a spark burn through his spine, meeting Buck’s glowing eyes for the third time in three months and the second time that day. Eddie wasn’t sure who moved (okay, he was definitely the one who had moved) but the kiss was soft, a barely there brush of lips, a pressure that set Eddie’s lips on fire.
“You’re amazing.”
