LGBTQ Disabled Characters Mini-Showdown Round 1
Propaganda/Who is this:
Aaron- from The Walking Dead. Neither of us have watched this or have the faintest clue who he is. From his fandom page he seems at least interesting?
Eda Clawthorne- from The Owl House. She’s great, very chaotic, the definition of be gay do crimes.

The day of the first family reunion after Luz had started living on the Isles was one she had been both excited and dreaded. On one hand she couldn't wait to introduce the rest of the family to actual genuine magic. And to her girlfriend. On the other hand....she was fairly sure that one of her aunts was going to cause problems. And with that came concerns.
OR
Eda, Lilith, and Amity meet the Noceda pack and there are metaphorical fireworks. And not of the pretty variety.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks Eda’s curse is a metaphor for mental illness. At least I hope I’m not. That’s one of the many reasons I think I’ve been so drawn to her character and I could (and might) write a whole thing about why I like her so much but her dealing with her demon might be the biggest factor.
Now of course I’m not saying those who have a mental illness are demons. Just putting that out there. I just see my own issues as my own demons. So here’s a bit of stream of consciousness thoughts on the similarities I see in my own mental health struggles and Eda’s curse. My journey is of course different from others so the things experienced wont track to everyone. Putting it under a cut and with a warning about discussing depression.
1. How tired she gets after doing magic.
The biggest aspect that I relate to is how tired she gets. There’s been a few times now where she’s had to nap and is so tired she can’t physically stay awake. When my depression is bad I’m the same way. All I’m able to do is sleep. Sometimes I can’t even move I feel so drained. I noticed that Willow can pull off big feats of magic I would consider on par with Eda but doesn’t get as worn out after doing it. That could also be an age thing but Lilith doesn’t get “I need to sleep NOW” after her fight with Eda and we can assume that they are at least somewhat close in age. So I think the exhaustion is caused by the curse
2. Memory Problems
Eda can’t remember who cursed her and doesn’t get her potion(meds) sometimes (I am so thankful for reminder text messages). Plus that ending song from Something Ventured, Someone Framed kept bringing up the idea that someone can’t remember the singer. I’m pretty sure that’s related to Eda. Depression can cause memory issues as well.
3. Onset with Trauma
Someone cursed Eda. She wasn’t born with the curse as far as we know. I see it as a metaphor for a traumatic event. While this isn’t the case with all mental illness a traumatic event can be the onset of one.
4. Hunger
Demon!Eda will eat anything. Other creatures, potion bottles, swing sets. etc. Some people loose their appetite as a symptom but I actually eat a lot.
5. The Potion (meds) not working anymore)
Sometimes when you’ve been on something long enough the amount that it helps you goes down. Then you have to up the dosage or try something new.
I could be reading into all of this too much but if it is intentional I appreciate it. I don’t think I’ve seen a representation of an adult really struggling with a mental illness before in a “kids” cartoon.
So where would I like to see this go from here?
Part of me kind of hopes that Eda learns to control the demon and deal with it. It being a part of her life but it not controlling her. If she gets cured of it though I will also be thrilled for her. Some people do get better, heck some day I hope I do, and seeing her recover would be wonderful too.

Why I do not think Luz will leave the demon realm. An analysis of the general themes
Amphibia, The Owl Houses... sibling Isekia fantasy cartoon has ended. The show stared Anne Boonchuy who along with 2 of her best friends is transported to another world, where all three girls are separated and they meet humanoid amphibious creatures who take them on adventures. These adventures parallel different lessons learned as you grow up and have the girls taking more critical looks at who they are as people, and whom they are as a group... There is also some stuff about a prophecy, classism, and totalitarian rule. But it is all kinda written in as extra. It’s just there to make a coming of age story more exciting for viewers.
With Amphibia over, the owl house wrapping up, and the two shows having so many similarities and differences I thought it might be a good time to compare and contrast messages between the shows, and talk about predictions for how The Owl House will end. Amphibia was always a coming of age story, with a secondary theme of being about old friendships. The three girls have been “friends since kindergarten” but no longer have all that many common interests, and increasingly separate needs. This kinda makes their friendship seem almost like a habit of their childhood. They all carry around developed copies of this photo of the three of them together, and will talk to it. But despite looking like they are all the same age in it as they are now, the photos are all old, wrinkled, and starting to tear... signifying that the girls are beginning to grow apart and becoming old friends. They make more current friendships with the he inhabitants of Amphibia, and those are their main friendships throughout the show. They grow up more with those inhabitants, help them, and come to really love and care abut them. But it is all done with the knowledge and acceptance that this is temporary. The amphibians belong on Amphibia and the girls belong on earth, and there will come a time when they will have to let each other go. There is of course some debate of “well what if”, “well how about” , “and “just a little longer” but at the end Amphibia pretty much went back to the messages of growing up can be hard but is necessary, and old friends, and fond memories...
Unlike Amphibia I do not think The Owl house is about growing up. Yeah sure Luz and Co mature through out the show, Their magical abilities grow. In 2x04 Luz works with Gwendolyn to heal Eda’s curse through extreme and crazy means. They try flying snakes which Luz later remarks were a bad and unhelpful idea... When in 1x01 Luz is in the principals office for her terrorizing her English Class by throwing live snakes around during a book report, because apparently the main character battles snakes, and she expects congratulations for thinking it up. King’s wants in life also change. He starts out wanting to be this mighty ruler and powerful monster, then he just wants answers to his past, then he just wants what he has. Ultimetaley though the characters maturing isn’t really what is front and center with the Owl House.
No, one big theme throughout the Owl house seems to be building a supportive community. It is actually really amazing in this show how background characters that do not, or rarely speak, are shown to have interests and recurring friendships. At school Luz hangs out with 2 good friends and her girlfriend. Willow and Gus are on a sports team that Luz and Amity support but do not want to be part of, so Willow and Gus recruit three other witches. Amity is Luz’s overachieving, book loving, sometimes cranky girlfriend. She also has a job she loves, helping out in the library. Plus a family whom she has a rocky relationship with. Events during the show, helped along but not necessary created because of Luz, show she has begun taking steps to build healthier relationships with them. These are all core parts of Amity’s character. Eda is a middle aged women and the adopted/foster mother of two young children. She also has pushed away many of the people whom she cared about growing up. She opens up more through out the show and eventually makes the decision to reconnect with her family and ex, because she feels she needs more support for herself and her children (whom she makes a priority to still treat like children and not like adults/soldiers.). I think the best example of this is Hunter. He is a kid on the wrong side, in an abusive situation, that he does not fully recognize for the bad it is. In some other media it would be entirely up to Luz as the “protagonist hero” to show him whats wrong and save him from it (something that is to big a job for one young girl) . In The Owl House she plays a part in Hunter leaving. But he also has flapjack, Darius, Raine, and all the kids on the Emerald Entrails.
With so much of a focus on building supportive communities in the boiling, and a complete lack of it that shown in Gravesfeild, not just for Luz but also for Camila and Vee in her true form, I cannot imagine the show ending with the family living in Gravesfeild permanently. Camila and Luz seem to have no other family. There are no pictures of Grandparents, Aunts/Uncles, or Cousins around the house. No mention of any close work friends of Camila’s or neighbors who come over for dinner or occasionally watch Luz during long shifts. The pair are completely on their own, and its hard for them. Also now there is Vee. She loves Camila, Camila is a really good guardian/mom to her, and her and Luz seem to get along pretty well in Yesterday’s Lie. Luz’s has gained around 3 siblings since the beginning of the show and has reacted positively to all of them. While Vee says she is happier in the human realm (mostly because their is no Belos), it's really dangerous for her. She needs a steady stream of fresh magic to maintain a human form, and if she is seen in her Basilisk she gets accused of being an alien and dragged away for tests. There is also the fact that she has to pretend to be Luz. People say when Luz comes back they can just pretend to be twins, but eventually the “where was your twin before?” question will be asked. They cannot get away with “oh she lived with our dad but recently moved in with us" for long because it has to be in Luz’s school and legal file somewhere that her dad died years ago. Because their is no legal record of Vee in the human realm Camila cannot legally adopt her and then enroll her in school under her own identity...
But Camila could probably adopt Vee in the boiling isles and then send her to hexside with Luz. There would be an easier supply of magic for Vee to feed off of. Luz could keep going to school with all her new friends. With a principal and staff who are able to not only manage her, but help her channel her enthusiasm into learning. The Clawthorne’s could stay connected to Luz as her “God family” and would be available to help Camila with her girls when things come up. Camila would probably get along with them too, plus maybe even Mr. Porter or the Parks, (the Blights... she wouldn’t dislike Amity at least). When we first saw Camila in her work uniform we all thought she was a nurse, but the show later clarified that she is actually a vet... Well vet’s work on autonomy different form a humans, and there is a whole magic track in the isles dedicated to the care and keeping of beasts. Camila is clever, Luz has connections to two very powerful beast keepers... it wouldn’t be that hard for Camila to learn and get hired in beast keeping, and given that she is shown to have such a fondness for exotic wild life (she gets emotional over nature documentaries) she would likely enjoy it.
End the show by ridding the isles of Belos and his evil plans, Bring Camila and Vee to live there and have the Noceda’s move permanently. Please.

A lying witch, a warden and a grumpy teen
Synopsis: Hunter is abandoned at a playground, his babysitter simply disappeared. Alone, Eda finds him, and takes him in, unaware that he's Emperor Belos' nephew and he grows into being Hunter Clawthorne, or the Owl teen. Link to AO3 will be posted on the notes. _____________________________________________________________
"And the two, and the monster ate them whole! That was all that was left of the!...... Patrol!" The little kid was sitting on the bench of the playground, alone, with small legs kicking the air, too small to reach the ground yet. It was past 8am, and he was cold and hungry, but their babysitter told them to wait there. It was been some time, though. She was gone since…. Hunter couldn't tell. Kikimora had called his babysitter and she didn't come back, he knew that she would get in trouble for getting him into the playground, his uncle didn't like it when he was out of the castle reach, for safety. His new wound for the last time he disobeyed was still new, itching and hurting at the same time, on the right side of his face. He shivered when a cold breeze passed by, shrinking to try to keep himself warm, and trying to control his own fear. The streets were devoid of people, most people that were passing by were ignoring him, and some even looked at Hunter like he could be a tasty snack.
He waited a bit more, stomach growling more. This, with the cold, made him sleepy, and slowly he fell asleep there.
"Hey, kiddo. Wake up." Someone called him, gently "Can you hear me?"
"Huh?" He asked, trying to open his eyes. He slowly sat on the bench and rubbed his eyes, yawning.
"You're alone there, small one?" It was a soft voice. The witch was tall, her hair orange, cut short and with a grey streak "Where are your parents?"
"I…. My babysitter said I should wait here." He yawned again.
"Oh. It's kinda late now. Do you have a name, an address where I can take you?" Eda was afraid that he was abandoned there. Well, it wasn't impossible. Some parents were heartless enough to just let young witchlings to die if they didn't feel like taking care of them, and that seemed like an abandoned kid.
"My name is Hunter. I…." He considered telling "Emperor Belos" but remembered the scar he made just because he was out of the castle, playing in the mud "I don't know any name." He lied, looking at her. Lying was second nature already.
"Oh, ok then, young Hunter. Huh, it might be best for you to follow me. It's not safe for kids after it gets dark. Unless you have your magic, then I could let you wander around. But you're too young, it's best for me to take you home, ok? Then tomorrow we can see if someone is looking out for you."
"Ok" that's all he said, getting out of the bench."
"Are you hungry? I can get you something to eat before getting home." She said, reaching for his hand and waiting for him to grab her hand. He did so, careful. He nodded slowly, looking to the playground and around once again. "Don't worry, tomorrow someone will be looking for you, and you will return safe and sound to your family, ok?" Eda reassured, smiling at him.
Eda walked somewhere with food, and got something quick for him to eat, and walked to her home. She needed her potions, but that could wait. The kid was yawning and rubbing his eyes, so she carried him to home, when they got there, putting him on the couch and a blanket over him:
"Is that a kid? You're going to eat it?" Hooty said, getting close to her and Hunter.
"What? No! Shut up, Hooty!"
"Oh, so you're adopting him!"
"No! I can't… take a kid in, you know that. I will return this small one to his parents tomorrow."
That was true, she couldn't take care of a kid.
Being a mom was something that Eda wished for when she was younger. Eda and Raine had talked countless times about THEIR family. THEIR kids. THEIR house. Now it was past. Destroyed by that stupid curse she had. It had been years since the break up, and she still wasn't over it, she would never be over it. The curse took away many things from her. Her future, her dad, her mom, her sister, Raine and the dream of having a family. She couldn't let anyone be near her, she was too afraid of hurting them. She needed to return that kid, because she couldn't risk hurting him too.
"Tomorrow this kid will be with their real family"
That was what she thought.
In the morning, she made breakfast for the kid. Hunter was a picky eater, and she didn't mind doing what the kid asked for, since it would be his last day there, and the last day of having someone else in the house. Hunter had a bit of a talk with Hooty, and they went to check the wanted posters.
Nothing.
Hunter spent another day in the owl house.
They went to check again for posters.
Nothing. Hunter spent another day in the owl house. They bought a better pillow for him.
They came back home, and on the other day, they went to the wanted posters. Nothing. Everyday, check the wanted posters, nothing. They bought a new blanket for Hunter.
It had been two weeks now. The couch was already Hunter's bed, and the fridge was full of his favorite foods, since apparently he couldn't digest a lot, and most common foods would make him sick (Eda had a hard day on the toilet with him vomiting almost his guts out after eating a earthworm plate that was common for most witches) and Hunter was sad about no one coming for him. She decided two things, she needed to keep the curse in check, to keep him safe, and she would keep this kid. She simply couldn't throw him out after no one came for him. He was a weirdo, much like her, apparently.
One month had passed. Hunter was complaining about his back hurting, and she bought him a bed and put on the extra room she had. She bought him new clothes, and tried to find what more he could eat, to diversify his diet at least a bit. Things were changing in the owl house. Eda couldn't lie she liked having someone there, the nights didn’t feel so alone, and the days were more easygoing.
She started selling human trash, and apparently a kid made her look more needy of money, and that was certainly nice. The kid also had fun pickpocketing random passersby, and getting in trouble.
When King joined, the house didn’t seem more the house of a 35-year-old single lady, but as a family house, even though Eda wouldn’t admit it so soon. Both Hunter and the demon seemed to bond, especially over making Eda mad, and teasing her, and she would pretend to get mad, but she really couldn’t do that. Eda would say to others that Hunter and King were her roommates, Hunter helping her to collect human trash, sell potions and to get rid of emperor guards, and even without magic, they’re good on hand-to-hand combat, and very good on potion making, using it in self-defense, to sell them, but mostly for pranks.
The addition of the human in the house was a surprise, though.

Luz hadn't been entirely sure how she was going to explain to Eda that she came from a pack of shapeshifters. Only that she was probably going to need to figure it out before the next full moon. However, a certain boiling rainstorm unexpectedly forces the conversation.
OR
Eda and King finding out about the curse went nowhere near the plan Luz had been trying to piece together.
