REVIEW: TMNT Saturday Morning Adventures #5
Fresh out of the sewers of NYC comes another installment of TMNT: Saturday Morning Adventures #5. If you, like me were raised in the 90’s there is no doubt that you spent many Saturdays glued to your sofa watching the original TMNT animated tv show. This comic features an art style that is incredibly similar to the old cartoon shows as well as writing that is just like watching a whole new…

TMNT: SATURDAY MORNING ADVENTURES #3
JULY 2023
BY ERIK BURNHAM, DAN SCHOENING, LUIS ANTONIO DELGADO AND ED DUKESHIRE
Tumblr media
The turtles help TCRI retrieve a missing probe from the ocean, but they end up discovering the mysterious city of Turtlantis.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 9
If you thought Tim Lattie was doing an impressive job with these turtles, wait until you see what Dan Schoening is doing here.
It's odd, isn't it? I've seen Dan draw the turtles before, and wasn't anything like this (they looked awesome, but his style sometimes exaggerated their shells too much). but here, they look just in the style of their first 5 cartoon episodes. The whole thing felt surreal, I felt like I was looking at HD screenshots from the show.
Tumblr media
And there is another secret ingredient here... Luis Antonio Delgado is using the right colors, at least for the characters. The palette is a little broader than in the cartoon for the backgrounds, but it all looks so clean and perfect, it's really impressive.
If anything (and this didn't really affect the score), I think sometimes the artist is leaving too much space for dialogues, which makes me wonder if these comics are being done in the "marvel way" (drawing a plot, and creating the dialogues later).
Tumblr media
Burnham is also having a lot of fun here, adding elements from other iterations (last ronin, the turtles' nicknames), and also playing with the established canon (the Turtles already knowing about Atlantis).
Tumblr media
The only thing I feel the comic needs to figure out, is how complicated stories should be.
Technically speaking, this could be a comic for all ages, but the plot of this story was a little too simple. This is where the comic will need to figure out what it takes from the cartoon and what it doesn't. The plots in the cartoon were sometimes too complicated (especially in the later seasons), but only because they had twenty-something minutes to fill. Here, they only have 20 pages. So pacing should be king. I see the intention was there, and to be honest, I understand is a hard job to make a story like this in just one issue (especially considering this was a Slash episode, but he barely did anything).
To me, one artists that perfected pacing in standalone stories with a larger continuity was John Byrne. Yes, say what you will about him, but his craft was something to imitate. It will take some time for writers to return to that kind of compressed storytelling, but for a series like this one, it could very beneficial. Unless the comic starts selling too well, and the book can afford to go fortnightly, but that's just wishful thinking.

AU Thursday: Smiler Alton’s Day Off
And now, for another edition of “Me Vs. My Brain:”
Me: [asks my friend Nebby for some ideas about what she would like for her birthday fic this year]
Nebby: [gives me a few different options, including one where Marty McFly and Alice kidnap Victor and Victoria from their school in a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off-kinda way]
My Brain: [looking at that particular idea and its source inspiration] Yeah, no, that’s actually a Valicer AU.
Me:
My Brain: Hey, give me points for it being based on something you’re familiar with!
Me: ONE POINT. ONE POINT FOR AN AU BASED OFF A MOVIE I SAW ONCE AGES AGO.
So, yeah, now I have a Valicer Ferris Bueller’s Day Off AU kicking around in my head refusing to pay rent. -.- There’s not that much to it yet, but I do have a few basics:
-->As you might guess from the title, Smiler is Ferris in this AU -- Victor, of course, is Cameron, and Alice is Sloane (though she isn’t actually dating Smiler in this verse, they’re just friends). Rita is Jeannie Bueller, with Thirteen being Charlie Sheen’s druggie character (named Garth in the original script, I believe). Wickerman is of course Dean of Students Ed Rooney, and Nemesis would be the Bueller’s dog. I’m a little stuck as to where I could fit in Oblivion and Galactica though...I guess the best options would be either be the parents (Tom and Katie Bueller) or the two valets who take the Ferrari out for a joy ride? Though now that I’ve written that, I’m leaning toward the parents, as I’ve seen Galactica as the “Mom Friend” of the group for a while now...
-->The rough plot of the movie (Smiler faking sick, then getting their best friends Victor and Alice out of school to come with them on an adventure through the nearby city) is about the same, but part of the reason for the day out in this world is Smiler trying to get Victor and Alice officially together, having cottoned on that they have feelings for each other but are stuck in a “mutual pining” loop due to their various self-esteem problems. Smiler themselves has a crush on Victor, but just wants their beloved to be happy and figures that’s best accomplished by pushing them toward Alice. Victor and Alice DO end up confessing to each other (see below)...but after Smiler rescues Victor during the pool scene, Victor also kisses Smiler, because he too has a thing for them, and Alice laughingly tells the shocked Smiler that she noticed their crush and made it clear to Victor she didn’t mind sharing. Cue formation of V polycule and Smiler declaring this the “best day out ever.” :)
-->Really, a lot of this AU is based on the fact that I could totally see Smiler hopping on a parade float and singing “Danke Schoen” and “Twist and Shout” to the crowd. XD Though, having recently watched that scene on YouTube, I think in this AU’s version, Smiler would end up dragging Victor and Alice onto the float to dance with them, and this might be the prompt to get them to actually kiss, to Smiler’s delight. XD
-->Oh, and as for the restaurant scene -- Smiler HAS an elaborate plan to pretend to be whatever the AU’s equivalent of “The Sausage King of Chicago” is, and is ready to put it into action when they encounter the maitre’d...only for Victor to intervene and straight-up bribe the guy into giving them a table. XD Smiler is like “...I keep forgetting you can just do that.”
-->And for Rita’s subplot -- after encountering Wickerman in the Alton house, beating him up, and frightening him away, she does not call the police, as she’s very anti-authority -- instead, a neighbor calls the cops after seeing Wickerman running away from the house. The officer who comes by has the bad luck to encounter Rita right after she’s rejected the singing sexy nurse-o-gram, and Rita assumes they’re just another stripper and gets taken in for mouthing off to an officer (this does not make her feel any better about the police). This does lead to her meeting Thirteen, though, so not all bad! Result -- when she saves Smiler from Wickerman at the end, she lets Wickerman know that the only reason she’s not telling their parents about him being in their house is the date she’s got with the hot goth chick, but he’d better be real fuckin’ nice to her and her sibling from now on. (She also gets Smiler to agree to hack her grades, though rejects their offer of straight As, feeling it would be too suspicious -- “Just raise my two weakest subjects to Cs, that’ll be fine.”)
Further developments possibly to come -- we’ll see if my brain insists on keeping this one!

Giants will retain assistant general manager Kevin Abrams and director of football operations Ed Triggs, per multiple reports.
Assistant GM Kevin Abrams is expected to remain with the team, per Joe Schoen. He’s viewed as a tremendous resource. Schoen even notes that Abrams has offered to give up that title if they need it to bring on another personnel executive.

✨✨ TOP FIVES FOR 2020 ✨✨
2020 was, i think we can all agree, a massively chaotic year but i have never consumed as much media before in my life, so i thought others might benefit from my slothery uh, connoisseur.... ship?  yes, that.  below are the books, comics, shows, and movies that got me through!
B O O K S .
the starless sea, by erin morgenstern - i loooove this book because it loves me back.  it says: ‘oh, you’re a reader, well i have just the thing for you.’  it luxuriates in language and story and riddles and fairy tales and it feels like an entire library in a single tome.
they never learn, by layne fargo - oh fuuuuuck, this was satisfying.  i thought it might feel a little exploitative as it is very aware of the zeitgeist and likely would not exist without the #metoo movement but it never ever did.  this was a fucking ROMP, period.  reading about a woman getting away with murdering skeezy guy after rapey guy after shitty human just made me happier and happier.
moonflower murders, by anthony horowitz - this is the second in the susan ryeland series (and the first was hardcore good fun too) and really feels very classic mystery with the artful twist of catering to the literary community.  mainly because: susan isn’t a detective, she’s an editor and she gets drafted in this time because the clue to what happened to a missing woman is in a book she edited, if she can find it.  both of the books in this series have such an excellent coming together moment that is rare af to find.
the invisible life of addie larue, by v.e. schwab - the writing in this is just so good.  it has that feel to me where i just want to drop the book and open up my own page and let my fingers fly.  it’s that inspiring kind of writing that reminds you of all the things language can do.
crown of feathers/heart of flames, by nicki pau preto - aaahhh, this series is SO FREAKING GOOD!  why is there not more of a fandom for it, why???? it is so many of my favorite tropes all resting perfectly together to the point where you almost forget they’re tropes because they just so naturally evolved there.  ugh, it’s just.... it’s so heart-bursty good.
.... number 5, part 2?  raybearer, by jordan ifueko - this was just so original and i was invested af.  like, what a brilliant idea though and an even better execution??  i loved every character and am so looking forward to the next in the series so i can get to know them even better!!
honorable mentions (sh*t i still liked a whole heckuva lot): you/hidden bodies, by caroline kepnes // writers & lovers, by lily king // i’ll be gone in the dark, by michelle mcnamara // the faceless old woman who secretly lives in your home, by joseph fink & jeffrey cranor // girl, serpent, thorn, by melissa bashardoust // a little life, by hanya yanagihara // the guinevere deception, by kiersten white // obsidio (and the entire illuminae series), by amie kaufman & jay kristoff // the bone houses, by emily lloyd-jones // house of salt and sorrows, by erin a. craig // we hunt the flame, by hafsah faizal // savage legion, by matt wallace // blacktop wasteland, by s.a. cosby // crier’s war, by nina varela // the empress of salt and fortune/when the tiger came down the mountain, by nghi vo // upright women wanted, by sarah gailey // the monster of elendhaven, by jennifer giesbrecht // a deadly education, by naomi novik // you let me in, by camilla bruce // when you ask me where i’m going, by jasmin kaur // the lights go out in lychford/last stand in lychford (and the entire lychford series), by paul cornell // the devil and the dark water, by stuart turton // serpent & dove, by shelby mahurin // one by one, by ruth ware // ruthless gods (this was SUCH an upshot from the first book - it’s worth sticking with if you’re on the fence), by emily a. duncan // cemetery boys, by aiden thomas // the inheritance games, by jennifer lynn barnes // the fortunate ones (2021 release), by ed tarkington
C O M I C S .
cosmoknights, by hannah templer - the art was gorgeous, the gayness was glorious, and just.... hot HOOOOOOOOT lady knights in space?!  a princess winning her own hand?  find something not to love in there, i dare you.
don’t go without me, by rosemary valero-o’connell - wow. wow wow wow wow wow.  the writing was stunning, so lyrical and atmospheric and deep, and rosemary has to be one of my favorite artists but even that managed to come as a beautiful surprise because it was just so freaking bold.
through the woods, by emily carroll - i loooove emily carroll, the convergence of spine-tingling horror and art that feeds into it, that is both visually and aesthetically pleasing, is hard to beat!  p.s. i also read beneath the dead oak tree from her this year and it was also a BANGER.
the impending blindness of billie scott, by zoe thorogood - zoe is someone that i just want to follow.  she’s just starting and i want to be there for every single step.  i love her art style and her ability to tell a story with it.
above the clouds, by melissa pagluica - this was so unique, and such a baller concept, as nearly half the entire book is conveyed only through the art and yet you’re never once lost, never once confused as to what any character is thinking or feeling.  it’s a story within a story and only one of those gets words though they both are chock full of emotion!
um.... number 5, part 2? crowded, by christopher sebela - everything about this series is fun af.  crowd-funded assassination and a hirable bodyguard who’s rated like an uber driver???  and the chemistry between the two mains is so great and gay!!
honorable mentions: monster and the beast, by renji // long exposure, by kam ‘mars’ heyward // fence, by c.s. pacat // invisible kingdom, by g. willow wilson // ms. marvel, by g. willow wilson // heathen, by natasha alterici // not drunk enough, by tess stone // giant days, by john allison // die, by kieron gillen // be prepared, by vera brosgol // ascender (sequel to descender, which is also great), by jeff lemire // the unbeatable squirrel girl, by ryan north // bang! bang! boom!, by melanie schoen // gideon falls, by jeff lemire // life of melody, by mari costa // cry wolf girl, by ariel slamet ries // the tea dragon society, by katie o’neill // ptsd, by guillaume singelin // heartstopper, by alice oseman // solutions and other problems, by allie brosh // finding home, by hari conner // the magic fish, by trung le nguyen // something is killing the children, by james tynion iv // the weight of them, by noelle stevenson // spill zone, by scott westerfeld // skyward, by joe henderson // miles morales, by saladin ahmed
F I L M S.
parasite, dir. bong joon ho - oh it was satisfying, oh it was suspenseful, oh i had to watch some of it through my fingers but i loooooooved it.  such a good story and so well made.
knives out, dir. rian johnson - okay, everything about this movie was amazing.  every single character was fun as hell and i could’ve watched an entire movie about each of them.  what a great fucking mystery!
blindspotting, dir. carlos lopez estrada -  this made my heart hurt so damn much.  what glorious writing, acting, and story!
portrait of a lady on fire, dir. celine sciamma - gooooorgeous cinematography, amazing chemistry, and such a soft, atmospheric film.
the farewell, dir. lulu wang - i cried and my heart felt so full and i love it so so much.
um.... number 5, part 2? someone great, dir. jennifer kaytin robinson - no part of me expected to love a netflix movie this much but it’s a love story that doesn’t get told that often??  the end of a relationship and the true love of friendship and i love these girls and i love jenny and nate’s broken relationship.
honorable mentions: eighth grade, dir. bo burnham // booksmart, dir. olivia wilde // midsommar, dir. ari aster // the curse of la llorona, dir. michael chaves // the secret life of pets 2, dirs. chris renaud & jonathan del val // jojo rabbit, dir. taika waititi // the invisible man, dir. leigh whannell // the favourite, dir. yorgos lanthimos // can you ever forgive me?, dir. marielle heller // troop zero, dirs. bert & bertie // ready or not, dirs. matt bettinelli-olpin & tyler gillett // brave, dirs. mark andrews & brenda chapman & steve purcell // the half of it, dir. alice wu // palm springs, dir. max barbakow // doctor sleep, dir. mike flanaghan // uncut gems, dirs. benny sadfie & josh sadfie // birds of prey, dir. cathy van // bloodshot, dir. dave wilson // the old guard, dir. gina prince-bythewood // enola holmes, dir. harry bradbeer // hocus pocus, dir. kenny ortega // always be my maybe, dir. nahnatchka khan // finding dory, dirs. andrew stanton & angus maclane // die hard, dir. john mctiernan
S H O W S .
black sails (2014) - this show, this shooooooooow.  i cannot, it just makes me want to cry with how good it is.  the characters, the EMOTIONS, the story, the plaaaaaan.  like, the creators clearly had a plan for every single step of this show and it was a gOOD, GOOD PLAN.
the untamed (2019) - truly, cheesy good fun with one of the best gay romances ever.  i love these characters and their relationships to each other and the way it glories in its own ridiculousness.
the righteous gemstones (2019) - one of the things that bothered me about my next choice (the ratio of female to male nudity) was so much more realistic in this one (i mean, we’ve all gotten five thousand dick pics and i know like three people?  so the fact that there is so rarely male nudity in shows when there are tits everywhere..... no, how does that even make a tiny bit of sense?).  this show was such great, wonderful, awful fun.  they’re not great people and the show is under no delusion about that and it’s GLORIOUS!
the witcher (2019) - this was just hella fun, i loved the characters and the fantasy elements.  i’m excited for the next season, it’s just entertaining swashbuckling through and through!
fargo (2014) - all of this was really very enjoyable with the through line being somebody fucks shit up and gets involved in something they really shouldn’t be involved in that’s going to swallow them whole.  season one and season three were my stand-out favorites but they were all so violent, clever, and vicious!
um.... number 5, part 2? central park (2020) - um..... so many of the hamilton actors in a muscial cartoon drawn and written by the bob’s burgers team? WHAT ABOUT THAT DOESN’T SOUND AMAZING?!  it was such a joy to hear daveed diggs and leslie odom jr.’s voices again!!
honorable mentions: schitt’s creek // the mandalorian // mr. robot // broadchurch // mindhunter // jack ryan // the good place // the end of the f***ing world // big little lies // elite // kidding // servant // letterkenny // curb your enthusiasm // i am not okay with this // ozark // buzzfeed unsolved: true crime/supernatural // you // runaways // dear white people // dickinson // brooklyn nine-nine // will & grace // 9-1-1 // dead to me // solar opposites // never have i ever // killing eve // what we do in the shadows // grace and frankie // avenue 5 // roswell, new mexico // the bold type // evil // tuca & bertie // impulse // the umbrella academy // watchmen // infinity train // corporate // search party // on becoming a god in central florida // a.p. bio // criminal: uk // the morning show // mythic quest // last week tonight // prodigal son // the great

Bibliography - “Evangelion: You Can (Not) Reference”
Tumblr media
As I noted before, from here on, all of our panels from now on will include full bibliographies of the sources we used in the research and creation of the presentation.
This is the bibliography for our newest venture, the remake of our panel on the religious references used in Neon Genesis Evangelion titled “Evangelion: You Can (Not) Reference”.
*Update* This bibliography is now complete!  I will make further updates if I find another source I missed.
Bibliography:

TheSeaVoices Drawing Playlist
A mixture of drawing moods, themes and favourites, not necessarily relevant lyric-wise but all very carefully selected for zero frustration - maximum flow, and perhaps an element of sexiness?
If you want a 43 track playlist for drawing or painting to - this works :)
-
1- Wallowa Lake Monster, Sufjan Stevens
Fucking love the fucking lyrics! Beautiful story and atmosphere and voice. I hadn’t listened to Sufjan much before watching Call Me By Your Name and just caning Visions of Gideon for weeks after.
2- Experiment In Terror, Henry Mancini
From the 60’s noir thriller of the same name - so stylish and cool - what a soundtrack sir! I love the slow threat and slinkiness.
3- My Body, Perfume Genius
Similar slink here, dirty kind of glide. Have seen PG a couple of times live and just ABSORBED it into my soul - he dances up there like a beautiful table-dancer and the crowd is moving with him - always good albums to paint to.
4- Danke Schoen, Wayne Newton
Turn this way up! 21 year old Wayne blasts this out like a genius - his voice is amazing and so feminine. I know it from Ferris Bueller's Day Off originally where it is put to very good use.
5- My Little Brown Book, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane
I can listen to Duke Ellington all day every day, those brushy cymbals in this are so lazy cool. That’s the third sixties song so far.
6- One More Kiss Dear, Vangelis
Bladerunner, one of my favourite films.  WHAT A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK! This song was an accidental recording sung for the demo by Don Percival (not the intended singer) and the weird spooky vocal just worked for the mock vintage sound.
7- Verbarhemiopia, Ed Dowie
Released through Lost Map Records. I know these people and they always have great acts - I had a lot of exceptional experiences on the Inner Hebridean island of Eigg with them. This track is just a beautiful, pulsing moonbeam.
8- Just Like Honey, The Jesus and Mary Chain
Such a sleazy, druggy, sexy song - dirty guitar and sensual drums - the opening drum intro, borrowed from (another 60’s track), Be My Baby by The Ronettes coming up on this list at number 38.
9- Grid, Perfume Genius
I rec the video!
10- Here, Pavement
Oh Pavement - a big part of my identity! - Live, they are a fucking dream! This song is a regular ear worm.
11- Demon Host, Timber Timbre
Great lyrics, great album
12- Animal Friends, P-ano
The only song I’m into on this album, the atmosphere is great. A sad little song.
13- Sleepwalk, Santo and Johnny
1959 so lets call it 60’s again XD. A great instrumental - that slide, steel guitar sound is lush and the asmr trigger of my dreams
14- Hang Out The Stars In Indiana, Al Bowlly
MY FAVOURITE SONG OF ALL FUCKING TIME. I can and do listen to this on repeat all through a drawing even if it takes a day. Withnail & I introduced me - one of my favourite films. And, of course Bowlly is on The Shining too.
15- Wasted Teens, Monoganon
Lost Map records again, excellent and crazy live performance from these on Eigg.
16- The Alien, Ben Salisbury, Geoff Barrow
Such dark foreboding anticipation. From the Annihilation soundtrack - brilliant film and score. I love Portishead too.
17- Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries, Al Bowlly
Hey cheer up everyone - fuck it!
18- Wanna Sip, Fever Ray
I do! This is from their live recording at the Troxy - I WAS THERE —- oooooooooooof fuck WHAT A SHOW honestly!
19- Lipstick Stains, Jay Som
“I wanted to musically capture the immediate and intense but beautiful feeling of infatuation.” —— yep!
20- Heat Wave, Snail Mail
Yes! They are brilliant - saw them live at End Of The Road and the tent was CRAMMED!!!!!! The atmosphere was amazing - she is so young and so great.
21- I Love How You Love Me, The Paris Sisters
Hello 1960’s! The creamy Spector sound and that spoken word is amazing.
22- Shadow, Chromatics
Loved this on Twin Peaks The Return, it’s a gem and perfect for drawing/painting to.
23- Bankrobber, The Clash
I always sing ‘Daddy was a vampire’
24- Do Your Best, John Maus
Slo-mo beauty.
25- Canadian Girl, The Walkmen
Nice vintage-tinged weirdness and soul.
26- Wave of Mutilation (UK SURF) Pixies
I love Pixies, only seen them live once but it was very, very, very special. Beautiful, laid back b side version that I prefer to the album track.
27- Fell An Ox
There was a time where all I would listen to was King Creosote - it was an obsession! I have lost count of KC gigs I’ve been to.
28- Slow West, Django Django
Love the film, love the soundtrack, loved Django Django up till the last few releases. There is a live version of this on KEXP from four years ago which is the one I usually listen to. Fucking brilliant live - got to see them on Eigg one time too. I rec the Slow West film if you haven’t seen it.
29- Withnail’s Theme, Jack Hallam
Great film and soundtrack - a big favourite.
30- Portofino 1, Raymond Scott
60’s!  Ha - I hadn’t realised this at all till writing all this.
31- Lady Gaylord, Raymond Scott
From Manhattan Research Inc a collection of his advertising jingles and snippets from the 60’s
32- The Pink Room, Angelo Badalamenti
Filthiest song ever? From Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
33- Goodnight Felicia, Chris Bear
From the score to excellent TV show, High Maintenance. I do love Grizzly Bear anyway and cried at their last gig I went to - I always cry at gigs though so….
34- Plainsong, The Cure
My teenage self was a massive Cure fan and I dedicated my record player, school books, wardrobe and bedroom to them! Saw them live only once (the LIGHTS!!!!) because I was too young, obsessed over Robert Smith a lot! This song and the whole album were a big favourite. Beautiful.
35- A Reluctant Hero/Betsy/End Credits Taxi Driver, Bernard Herrmann
I love Herrmann and I really love Taxi Driver. This is just…. ooof!
36- I Fall In Love Too Easily, Chet Baker
Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1954- what a pretty little voice.
37- Looking Back I Should Have Been Home More, Richard Swift
Just lovely, so sad about Swift.
38- Be My Baby, The Ronettes
The best opening song use ever- MEAN STREETS - turn this RIGHT up please.
39- Go, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips - Daniel Johnston cover
Doubly sad because of Sparklehorse and Daniel Johnston. I have seen The Flaming Lips many times throughout their career - from small gigs to radio telescope gigs! What a fucking show!
40- Every Night, Perfume Genius
Just nice stuff. Like I said - live he is so sensual- his moves are amazing.
41- Fireflies Made Out of Dust, Happy Jawbone Family Band
Great track. Love the lyrics.
42- Sleeping Lessons, The Shins
Richard Swift again, on keyboards. I really enjoy the historical references and atmosphere on this.
43- Smoke Rings, Les Paul, Mary Ford
1952 - ssssso ssssssspooooky

Ghostbusters 101 #1 (IDW Publishing)
Well, this takes me back.
Erik Burnham was writing this comic when I first started the whole God of Comics thing for Living Myth Magazine. It had this weird stylized Dan Schoening art that made it instantly recognizable and tried to marry the various cartoons and comics that came before (excepting the one with the gorilla) and worked excessively well. It also set the stage for the themes IDW would continue to explore in the comics that followed: themes like integration, family, and diversity.
Without Erik Burnham's work on Ghostbusters, there would be no TMNT, no Jem and the Holograms, no GI Joe. The modern IDW comics owe a lot to this title and Transformers, so the idea of Erik returning to work on the characters he did such a good job with before is exciting... especially following the fallout of the last feature film.
Let's get this out of the way now: I enjoyed the new movie. It was not as good as the first but was loads better than the second and it could easily spark a whole new franchise. The deleted scenes are great, the themes explored therein are a lot of fun, and the characters are kind of amazing (I have a head canon that Patty is putting herself through college and is majoring in New York's history and sociology).
The set-up here is that the original team – Venkman, Stantz, Zeddemore, and Spengler – are opening up franchises because of course they are, and that means bringing people into the home office to learn the ropes. Some of those students poke around where they shouldn't and end up merging two universes together, a thing that happens in IDW quite a lot (and explains their weird and often excellent crossovers).
In practical terms, this means that Venkman, Stantz, Zeddemore, and Spengler will get to work with Holtzmann, Yates, Tolan, and Gilbert as equals, with respect to both iterations of the franchise being seen as equally valid. This is the best sort of writing, and this comic promises to be a lot of fun.

TMNT: SATURDAY MORNING ADVENTURES #16
August 2024.
By Erik Burnham , Dan Schoening, Luis Antonio Delgado, and Ed Dukeshire.
Tumblr media
Mikey faces the Pantheon alone. Will he free his brothers in time to escape from the pocket dimension?
Tumblr media
SCORE: 8
Did the Pantheon need to be introduced this way? Nah.
Was it worth it? Well... There is potential for future stories, but right I'd say that the key is in the ending of the episode.
Having said that, this felt like a waste of Scratch (but I have some guesses on why a certain villain ended up in our world instead).
I normally love Dan's art, but there were two things in this issue that I felt could have been better. One is the the overuse of big sets. We get these huge panels where 50% is background, and then there are some tiny (yet gorgeous) turtles. I think it would be awesome if he could use the space more effectively, unless there were story reasons to give so much emphasis to the background. The other thing that I found "missing" where the whiskers. There are two cats and one rat in this story... no whiskers? I think whiskers would have made Old Hob look more complete, at least to me.
Overall, I didn't find this story that interesting. I am not sure if this will be a problem with new characters getting introduced only, but I am looking forward for the Mona Lisa episode next month.
Oh... and nice Kevin Maguire homage.

For the week of 24 June 2019
Quick Bits:
Action Comics #1012 keeps a number of plates spinning with the Invisible Mafia, Leviathan, and tying in events in Superman, while bringing back a character who we’ve not seen for some time in the DCU. Some great layouts and art from Szymon Kudranski and Brad Anderson.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Age of X-Man: X-Tremists #5 is the explosive conclusion to this mini from Leah Williams, Georges Jeanty, Roberto Poggi, Jim Charalampidis, and Clayton Cowles. We get Jubilee’s perspective on the end, as they all collectively remember what came before, what was taken from them, and the nightmare that they’ve been placed in and forced to participate. Damn good stuff.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Amazing Spider-Man #24 is a lot of Peter avoiding dealing with things in a rational adult manner and some weird stuff with Mysterio and the new villain who has been haunting the series for a while. My guess is that it’s Ned Leeds, but his true identity is still hidden for the moment. Pretty good for a buffer issue.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Angel #2 is another entertaining issue from Bryan Edward Hill, Gleb Melnikov, Gabriel Cassata, and Ed Dukeshire. There’s another nice split as we see a bit of Angel’s past as he reforges a slayer as his “axe” and then a dive into the current evil plaguing the kids in social media. Wonderful reveal of Lilith’s “true form” as well, great design by Melnikov.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Tumblr media
Ascender #3 is harrowing and breathtaking. While Andy and Mila try to run in the present, we get more information on what happened with them and Effie in the time between Descender and now. Gorgeous, stunning artwork from Dustin Nguyen.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Bad Luck Chuck #4 concludes what has been a fun, but weird, series from Lela Gwenn, Matthew Dow Smith, Kelly Fitzpatrick, and Frank Cvetkovic. And it ends with a pretty epic battle between cops and nuns.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Black Panther #13 begins the next arc of “Two Thousand Suns” and T’Challa’s attempts to contact anyone back on Earth. Daniel Acuña returns to provide the art and it is beautiful. The effects as T’Challa attempts to calculate a communication path to Earth with the various planets and such are amazing.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Detective Comics #1006 begins a new arc guest-starring the Spectre, with art from Kyle Hotz and David Baron. The Corrigan/Spectre joining sure works different than it used to. Interesting mystery with the Spectre cult and great art.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Ghost Tree #3 takes a few nice moments of quiet introspection and reflection from Brandt and Arami, as well as exploring more of Brandt’s grandparents life, before ramping up the tension with the demon. Beautiful artwork from Simon Gane, Ian Herring, and Becka Kinzie.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
Justice League Dark #12 has huge ramifications as “Lords of Order” rages on. Stunning artwork from Alvaro Martínez Bueno, Raul Fernandez, and Brad Anderson. Also Tynion gives us a fascinating rumination on magic between Batman and Wonder Woman.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Killer Groove #2 continues this excellent crime drama. The little pieces of interaction and tiny character stories throughout this issue are wonderful. Ollie Masters’ approach to the narrative reminds me a lot of Robert Altman.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Road of Bones #2 leans hard into the brutal survival aspect of travelling across Russia in winter, without much idea or sense of where you’re going. Wonderful art from Alex Cormack.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
The Silencer #18 concludes this series with a kind of stock-taking story from Dan Abnett, V. Ken Marion, Sandu Florea, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano. There’s some bits about the reconciliation between Blake and Honor, but a large portion of this is Honor trying to find out information on what’s happening with Leviathan.

Stranger Things: Six #2 continues to flesh out the time before the first season at Hawkins Labs as we continue to follow Francine through her past and experiences there. There’s a wonderful feeling of dread with the glimpses of the Upside Down.

Thor #14 builds on events in War of the Realms #6 with a story that is concurrent with what happens in that book diving into the younger Thor’s perspective. Great art from Scott Hepburn and Matthew Wilson.

Transformers/Ghostbusters #1 is a great debut from Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening, Luis Antonio Delgado, and Tom B. Long beautifully integrating the two properties here. Cybertron as destroyed by Gozer is just wonderful, and there’s a nice bit of humour that fits well with Burnham and Schoening’s other Ghostbusters work.

War of the Realms #6 is the conclusion to this event with Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Sabino giving us a “storm of Thors”. It’s fairly epic as Thor and Malekith meet in the final confrontation, capping off one of the longest narrative arcs in Marvel that began back in Thor: God of Thunder #1 years ago. There’s more to come, but this is a very satisfying end.

The Weatherman #1 is a welcome return for the second volume of this series from Jody LeHeup, Nathan Fox, Moreno Dinisio, and Steve Wands. The story shifts as the team search for the clue to unlocking Bright’s memories on the one place we thought previously was all dead...Earth. Great stuff.

Wolverine: Exit Wounds #1 is another of Marvel’s 80th Anniversary one-shots, this one presenting three stories from some of the luminary creators that have worked on Wolverine before. The standout for me is the Wolverine/Venom story from Sam Kieth and Ronda Pattison. It’s a simple Vs. story, but the artwork is gorgeous. Larry Hama, Scot Eaton, Sean Parsons, and Matt Milla & Chris Claremont, Salvador Larroca, and Val Staples provide the other two stories giving a glimpse into other stages in Logan’s past. Joe Sabino provides letters for all three stories and it’s nice to see how he adapts for the tone and style of each tale.

Wonder Woman #73 is a fill-in from Steve Orlando, Aaron Lopresti, Matt Ryan, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Pat Brosseau giving us a story of Diana’s past in an alternate reality. It’s a decent tale on its own, giving a hint at something important for the ongoing story.

Press release: PROVIDENCE, R.I. – June 7, 2019 – Today, Blue Milk LLC launches Star Wars: The Vintage Collection Archive Edition book on crowd-funding site Kickstarter. Starting from $50 for early bird backers, the Star Wars: The Vintage Collection Archive Edition is a comprehensive historical manuscript and detailed visual archive of one of Hasbro's most popular lines of 3.75-inch Star Wars action figures, The Vintage Collection (TVC). Written by Derryl DePriest, former Vice President of Global Brand Management and Star Wars brand team leader at Hasbro, the book comprises approximately 300 pages detailing TVC action figures, creatures, vehicles and playsets. Each item in the collection will feature a write-up informed by inside knowledge from the design and marketing team, and will be accompanied by crisp, high-resolution photos. The volume will be printed on premium-quality paper, bound in a deluxe hardcover. "The Vintage Collection is one of the greatest toy lines of all time, offering an incredible balance between source material accuracy, detail and playability,” according to DePriest. “Our goal with The Vintage Collection Archive Edition is to pay tribute to this amazing series and the team that created it, offering spectacular photography and new insights for the long-time fan while acting as a primer covering the entire series for the newer collector.” Joining DePriest are co-authors D. Martin Myatt and Rich Alot. The trio will self-publish the book under their newly formed company Blue Milk LLC. Steve Sansweet, Star Wars super-collector and President and CEO of Rancho Obi-Wan, will write the foreword. “Introduced in 2010 with roots in the legendary 1978 Kenner Star Wars toy line, The Vintage Collection has grown to include hundreds of figures, vehicles, and special sets. Keeping track of everything available is challenging, and The Vintage Collection Archive Edition will be an invaluable resource to fans and collectors alike,” Sansweet says. The book’s Kickstarter campaign offers a variety of backer rewards for those supporting the project, including a TVC compendium poster by Kim Simmons, Kenner’s principal Star Wars photographer between 1981-2000. In another tie to the original toy line, the poster uses the actual yellow background seen on Star Wars action figure packaging in the '80s. In addition to the backer rewards, the campaign has stretch goals to unlock more content and chapters.
