Week 3: This is how you connect practice with society.
Some personal discoveries I made are that using our design skills to address societal issues  and make a positive impact and it would lead to a greater sense of my work. Another discovery I made is that using collaboration skills in the film and acting out the societal challenges can discover the value of strong collaboration in achieving meaningful results.
So from the class activity we did a short film about littering and that is a very common social issue. I felt that my group had communicated well about the consequences of littering and the story line was not confusing at all.  However I felt that we could have improved on the accurate research and understanding of littering in the community and what is the most impactful one that people do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I recently saw an article on designers designing for social issues and I thought it was interesting.  There were mabo plates that looked like marble however it was made from entire plastic and food containers. Ecobirdly ( company name) developed a technique that allows them to reclaim plastic and make different types of furniture etc.
Tumblr media
I think that the example at the top could show how we can use design in a positive way to help and have an impact on societal issues. Another example is that we could use it to enhance communication by simplifying the complex information and making it easier for people to understand and engage them with the importance of the issue.

Peeking at the neighbours: a Dutch selection of successful sustainable companies in Belgium
Tumblr media
Dressr is the Belgian clothing library to borrow sustainable, independent designer clothing from the Benelux
The Netherlands has a healthy start-up climate in which sustainable, innovative ideas are welcomed with open arms, but the neighbours also have good results. Belgium has 47 B Corps[1] – companies that take sustainability into account along the entire chain – and annually awards various prizes to reward corporate social responsibility, such as the Belgian Business Awards for the Environment (BBAE)[2]. The following sustainable neighbouring companies are interesting to study.
ecoBirdy
The Antwerp-based ecoBirdy[3] collects old plastic toys and recycles them into designer furniture for children and adults. The new material consists of that waste for 100 percent, so that the furniture itself is also fully recyclable and the circle remains closed. It took two years of research to develop the right recycling technique.
Tumblr media
Richard Armchair + Judy Side Table Shadow
Each piece comes with a children's book that explains circular design in a child-friendly simple way. The aim is to introduce the young, former owners of the collected toys to the circular economy at an early stage and to inspire them to contribute to a more sustainable future. The business model resulted in various awards such as the Henry van de Velde Ecodesign by OVAM Award[4] in 2019.
Revive
Revive[5] explores untapped territory to revive it – socially and ecologically. This means that it does not occupy any green spaces, but rather transforms old industrial environments into lively neighbourhoods with lots of greenery. To this end, it uses innovative and energy-efficient techniques such as cross-laminated timber (CLT)[6] as an alternative to cement, concrete and steel. CLT reduces the need to heat homes and removes CO2 from the air instead of creating emissions.
Tumblr media
WATT project Ghent centre
An example project is the former industrial site of Sidaplex[7], producer of biopolymer films. In 2021, the industrial site made way for the green community 'RUTE'[8], with 105 green houses, equipped with heat pumps and green roofs.
Dressr
The first clothing library in Belgium has opened. In 2020, the financing was completed and the online platform could start. After years of puzzling, the business model is viable, including complex operational issues such as stocking, washing the garments and logistics to circulate clothes between different borrowers.
Tumblr media
Dressr's mission[9] is to persuade consumers to borrow clothes more often and thus curb the overproduction of clothing. Customers can borrow items once for a period of 10 days or purchase a membership from 39 euros per month for 2 items. The platform distinguishes itself from international competitors such as Rent the Runway by its local approach. The range is limited to sustainable, independent brands from the Benelux.
Ecobuilders
Tumblr media
Project Diana, Boutersem
Sustainable and energy-efficient building and renovation are becoming increasingly common, but it remains difficult for consumers to get started. That is why Ecobouwers[10] was founded, an information and network platform for homeowners and construction professionals in Flanders.
New sustainable solutions are shared on the site, such as the latest information about solar panels and insulation. (Re)builders can complete tests[11] to see whether someone’s house is suitable for the heat pump or green heat. 400 existing sustainable houses can be viewed online, such as a 'picturesque bio-ecological house'[12], made with renewable materials such as flax and loam. Finally, an interactive overview[13] with all green construction partners in Belgium helps to take the first step.
Soil Capital
Soil Capital[14] has already helped 506 arable farms in France, Belgium and the United Kingdom with the transition to profitable, regenerative agriculture. For example, it wants to transform one million hectares of land before 2025. Soil Capital's ultimate goal is twofold: to maintain the health and vitality of the soil, so that more CO2 can be stored, and to improve the quality of the harvest.
Tumblr media
The company also developed a Soil Capital Carbon program[15] that works with carbon credits. Farmers who want to participate must complete an annual assessment to measure their carbon emissions and carbon storage in the soil. For every ton of CO2 they receive one certificate with a minimum value of approximately 27 euros. 80% of certificates are sold on the carbon market. The remainder stays as a buffer for 10 years.

[1] The interest in B Corp is taking a flight! The European B Corp movement, officially launched in 2015 with 60 companies, has now grown to 700+ B Corps and is leading the way in Europe. Globally, already 4000+ companies in 77 countries are certified. Well-known B Corps in the Netherlands are Tony Chocolonely, Triodos Bank and Dopper. The assessment that companies complete to become B Corp, consists of 5 pillars: employees, the environment, the community, the company’s customers and its governance. https://rainbowcollection.nl/how-to-benefit-from-b-corp-certification/

[3] ecoBirdy recycles discarded plastic toys and turns them into colourful, kid-sized design furniture that is comfortable to use and easy to clean. ecoBirdy created a system that starts with the collection of old, unused plastic toys, passes through the recycling phase and ends with the design and production of pieces of furniture. The collection of kids' furniture is entirely made of recycled plastic from European waste. Each step is based on social and environmental responsibility. An accompanying storybook and school-programme have been designed to introduce youngsters to the circular economy and inspire them to contribute to a more sustainable future. The design, recycling and production of ecoBirdy furniture is all done in Europe. Based in Antwerp, founders Vanessa Yuan and Joris Vanbriel come from different cultural backgrounds. After gaining several professional experiences in diverse fields of the international fashion and design industry, they found they share a vision to create solutions for environmental problems using innovative technologies. https://www.ecobirdy.com/pages/about-us

[6] Cross-laminated timber (CLT) (a sub-category of engineered wood) is a wood panel product made from gluing together at least three layers of solid-sawn lumber, i.e., lumber cut from a single log. Each layer of boards is usually oriented perpendicular to adjacent layers and glued on the wide faces of each board, usually in a symmetric way so that the outer layers have the same orientation. An odd number of layers is most common, but there are configurations with even numbers as well (which are then arranged to give a symmetric configuration). Regular timber is an anisotropic material, meaning that the physical properties change depending on the direction at which the force is applied. By gluing layers of wood at right angles, the panel is able to achieve better structural rigidity in both directions. It is similar to plywood but with distinctively thicker laminations (or lamellae).

[9] It is Dressr’s aim to help fashion enthusiasts and ethically-minded brands lead the transition towards a more sustainable future of fashion. Long-term, the platform is designed to reduce the pressure on the production of new items, minimizing waste created by both the fashion industry and consumers. https://dressr.be/about-us/
[10] Ecobuilder was founded some ten years ago. Right from the start, the emphasis was on high-quality architecture. They create tailor-made homes, subdivide land, coordinate the construction process and assist companies in developing housing projects. Moreover, Ecobuilder has most professions in house: the project architect is there from the first meeting, as well as the project manager, the customer’s point of contact during the entire construction. Their project coordinator ensures that everything runs smoothly, while for the realisation they can count on a permanent construction team with whom we have been working for years (= quality guarantee). https://www.ecobuilder.be/wie-zijn-we

Waste No More
Tumblr media
A series of derelict vaults underneath Milan’s Central Station, was home to Ventura Projects during 2018 Design Week. The beautifully raw, arched spaces created an atmospheric backdrop for 10 installations, by both established and emerging designers.
Tumblr media
Architect and designer Stephan Hürlemann created ‘Giants with Dwarf’, using table and chair parts, from the archive of Switzerland’s oldest furniture manufacturer, Horgenglarus. All components were left in their found condition, highlighting the creativity that can develop from adaptive reuse. In today’s throw-away society, it has become increasingly important to keep resources in use for as long as possible, in order to extract the maximum value. As designers we should be consciously working to minimise waste, and reusing materials that already exist in a space, wherever possible.
Tumblr media
Also focused on sustainability was Eileen Fisher with the exhibition ‘DesignWork’. As a way of recycling her company’s own goods, Fisher buys back clients old clothes, generating a new stream of pre-worn merchandise. This collage of scraps was created from those which were irreparable, its purpose to ‘illustrate that recycling is a business model which can set companies free from their own commercial rules’1. The designers brand has evolved out of societies overconsumption – ‘establishing a new form of aesthetic activism’1. Were more brands to adopt this model, spectators could be transformed into activated users, whose happiness is defined less by consumption, and more by the positive impact that they are having on the environment.
Tumblr media
Not the only designer promoting the circular economy in Milan this year, Fisher was joined by utopian-architect and designer Yona Friedman, whose installation focused on the recycling of packaging waste, as well as ecoBirdy. These environmentally responsible designers, recover and regenerate plastic products, in an attempt to prevent the current likelihood, of there being more plastic than fish in the ocean, by 2050. This coincides with a recent pledge by all major supermarkets, and multi-national corporations Coca-Cola and Nestle, to remove all unnecessary, single use plastics from use, by 2025. For me this has highlighted that we as interior designers, should be evaluating our materiality choices on more than just aesthetics and cost.
