Solar eclipse diagram from the Frank Fisher Notes, 1882-1902
An index diagram from the Lick Observatory Photographs of the Solar Eclipse of January 1st 1889, drawn on July 1st 1892. The totality of this eclipse was visible across the western United States and central Canada. The Lick Observatory is an astronomical observatory, owned and operated by the University of California and situated on the summit of Mount Hamilton, in the Diablo Range just east of San Jose, California.
Frank R. Fisher’s notes contain observations, drawings, and photographs relating to scientific studies, particularly astronomical observations made while Fisher was a resident in Charleston, SC during the 1880s. Fisher’s astronomical observations begin in Charleston in 1882 with the sighting of a comet. He also records his observations of the transit of Venus (1883), an aurora and sun spots (1892), and discusses new theories concerning Jupiter (1894) and the nature of the sun’s corona (1892).

Can't wait for by solar eclipse on Monday! I've never seen one before, have you? A little bit about Thales, who may have been the first guy to correctly predict when an eclipse of the sun would happen. Thales was born in what's now Turkey, in the city of Miletus, about 630 BC, during the Archaic period. At that time, Miletus was a city where people spoke Greek, though it may have paid taxes or tribute to the Lydians. Thales (THAY-lees) travelled all over when he was a young man, and he may have studied with Egyptian or Babylonian scientists. Miletus was a very rich city at this time, and had trading colonies in Egypt that would have made this easier. Thales understood that the earth was round, and that the moon was lit by light reflecting from the sun. According to Herodotus, in 585 BC Thales was the first person to successfully predict an eclipse of the sun (an eclipse which ended a war between the Lydians and the Persians). #eclipseofthesun #solareclipse2017 #portlandoregon #cantwait #thalesofmiletus #egyptianscience #ancientgreece #lydians #persians #herodotus

#Repost @egould_ ・・・ Astronomical Case Clock Artist/Maker: Thomas Voight (active 1811-1836) Created: 1812 Origin/Purchase: Philadelphia Materials: mahogany veneer, Walnut. Provenance: Thomas Jefferson; by purchase to Martha Jefferson Randolph; by gift to Robley Dunglison; by descent to William Ladam Dunglison; by gift to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1894; Thomas Jefferson Foundation Historical Notes: Jefferson wanted an accurate clock for use in making astronomical observations from the time he had observed an eclipse of the moon in 1778. He then ordered a clock from the scientist and inventor David Rittenhouse. The Revolutionary War left Rittenhouse little time to work on Jefferson's clock, and the project was forgotten. Jefferson's desire for an astronomical clock was renewed more than thirty years later, when he expressed his regret at not having an accurate timepiece to use during the annular eclipse in 1811. In September of that year, Jefferson asked his friend, Robert Patterson, a Philadelphia mathematician and director of the United States Mint, for his recommendations on clocks available to that city: "I extremely regret the not being provided with a time piece equal to the observation of the approaching eclipse of the sun. can you tell me what would be the cost in Philadelphia of a clock, the time-keeping part of which should be perfect and what the difference of cost between a wooden & gridiron pendulum to be of course without a striking apparatus, as it would be wanted for astronomical purposes only." #eclipseofthesun (Text from Susan Stein) http://ift.tt/2v9hr4L

For the first time, on May 28th, 585 BC, the West Asian astronomer Thales of Miletus (in modern Turkey) succeeds in predicting a solar eclipse. Everyone's so impressed. (For more about Thales, link in bio.) so excited to see my first solar eclipse here in Portland in August! #thales #miletus #solareclipse #eclipseofthesun #eclipse2017 #westasia #historyofscience #scienceinhistory
