I'm back home and I'm kind of fat.

My mother is lovely. She is Golden Girls reruns and hot tea when you're home "sick" from school great. She stands slightly below five feet and people are both infatuated with and terrified of her and this is a quality that I can only hope to inherit. We are not people of faith- faith in a white, bearded, male Jesus, that is. We have faith in big dogs, people who own them, and Billy Joel, but our pearly gates, our Mecca is a mantra that I have held on to through painful seventh grade Halloween dance rejections and eighteen year old humiliations: the people who are awful to you in high school get fat and ugly. (I should say here that my mom graduated with eleven other people in her private Christian high school and most of her classmates really are as bland as they come and have gone significantly downhill in the way of appearances and being a person taking up space while she has a sassy haircut and shops at H&M). I have come to accept that this is my mother's version of, "being successful is the best revenge.. etc., etc." but I clung to this promise of cosmic justice for as long as I could remember. The kids who were popular and awful in high school may still be popular and awful but they're seemingly happy, successful college graduates and most of them didn't get fat and they're still wearing Hollister jeans and that's hard to swallow.

Seeing the Danielles and Melanies of the world doing well and kissing their Ken doll boyfriends in bars makes me so angry and if you don't hate anyone, let me tell you that it is exhausting. I've found strange comfort in curling up in all my anger and jealousy, letting it seep into my pores like a sour marinade. It's been far easier to stay upset with people who carry no weight in my world anymore than to accept that I've gained 20 (30) pounds since I dropped out of college and came back to my hometown. I am not where I thought I would or should be by now. I work at a restaurant and have only a few friends that know real things about me. I live in an apartment with wooden paneling on the walls and I'm back home. I'm back home. I'm back home. I'm back home. It eats at me sometimes and when it does I have to remember that, holy shit, I work at a restaurant. I have a job. This is fantastic news. I have friends that know things about me. I have a place to sleep and I am back home- home where I can grocery shop and see fifteen people I know, home where I can crawl in bed with my love and for the most part hear nothing but the neighborhood cats and our ceiling fan, home where I can meet my mom for tea and talk about our Billy Joel Jesus and how it's not so bad and how to be better.

So, now I'm working on a new mantra: I am grateful for where I am, how I am, my mirror of a mother, and for all the people who never got fat.
