On the morning of your birthday, you take a pen and write your name and address on your forearm. Then you wait, staring hopefully at the blank skin beneath the ink. Your soulmate, whoever they are, never writes back and each year you find yourself a little less optimistic about getting a response.

Perhaps he’s already happily in love with someone else. Maybe he simply doesn’t want you. You push away the more persistent thought that occasionally surfaces—maybe he’s dead. You don’t think that’s actually true, you’d feel it if he were.

Your family and friends do their best to make your day special, but your thoughts keep drifting back to your unanswered message. Everyone else you know has found their soulmate and it hurts to see them all so happy. Today, you wear long sleeves and try to push aside thoughts of what’s hidden beneath. You eat at your favorite restaurant and fill your day with activities. You've almost forgotten about the message until you get home and change for bed. 

Beneath your message is another. The ink is red and the letters are messy and jumbled. Your heart catches in your throat. 

I'm sorry. Can you forgive me?

You scramble for your desk, grabbing for the first pen you see and writing back quickly. Your hands shake so bad it's a miracle your words are legible.

Then you hear it—a soft but firm knock on your front door. Your heart leaps into your throat, and you hurry to the entrance. It doesn’t matter that you’re in ratty old pajamas or that your face is bare, stripped of the makeup you wear as a shield against the world. Your soulmate is here.

You fling the door open and gaze up at the man you find there. He’s holding a bouquet of half wilted flowers, standing perfectly still. His eyes are the bluest you’ve ever seen, and a full, pouty bottom lip is barely concealed by a neatly trimmed dark goatee. 

"Hey," you breathe, overwhelmed when he offers you a sweet but hesitant smile. “You’re here. Come in, come in,” you urge stepping back to give him space to pass you. 

"I'm sorry.” He stares at you, his eyes roving over your face. “I've....” he trails off, looking away. “There's a lot you don't know." 

"It doesn't matter," you tell him honestly.

He raises his hand as if he means to touch you only to draw away. He steps back but before he can get far you launch yourself at him, knocking into him. He stumbles but manages to catch you, and you bury your cheek against his chest, your joy at having him here eclipsing any shame or embarrassment. 

After a moment of hesitation, you feel his arms surround you and he rests his cheek against the top of your head. He sighs, and you hold him tighter. Whatever story he has to tell doesn’t matter right now; he’s real, alive, and here with you. That's all that matters.

Total Eclipse of the Trip

There are a lot of lessons to be learned when you book a train trip that spans 12 plus days, 6000 miles, and a lifetime of dreams. There are routes, maps, and timetables to study, and then it is cobbled together with towns, sights, and special interests along the way. Back in January PG had her double screen home office displaying Amtrak maps as we began piecing together, bit by bit, the dream trip, leaving time for connections and considering the optimum direction for each train, as well as daylight hours for the most scenic sections. Why go through the Sierras in the dark? And if you do have to make a connection, it’s best to do it where you don’t mind hanging a bit, just in case you miss that connection and are stuck there for hours (days). Much of this I learned from hours of study on the Amtrak Facebook pages (sad stories of families stranded in Idaho after rock slides and other such bring my dream down a notch why don’t ya stories). So I learned early that there were going to be glitches over the course of these 6000 miles and I was poised to pivot with aplomb—extra night here, a layover there, I had backup plans for every step of the way. However, I was NOT prepared to pivot before we even began.

That’s right. There we are getting on the train in Philly, headed to DC and from there on the overnight train to Chicago, where on Monday we would board the king of all trains, the whisperer of the wind, the Amtrak flagship—the amazing California Zephyr. Hearts pounding with excitement we step on that train and as the doors close I hear my phone ringing. With a quick dismissal upon seeing an 800 number I assure PG it is just the Red Cross in pursuit of my blood.

Well with that buildup you probably guessed that my blood is not really in that much demand. Indeed that was Mrs. Amtrak calling to put a cabash on our 3000 hours of planning and 6900 miles of traveling. The California Zephyr was CANCELLED for Monday due to high winds. High winds? A train can’t go through high winds? I can ride my BIKE on the beach in high winds. I am incensed. But Mrs. Amtrak insists that safety is her concern and apparently she considers 90 MPH winds to be beyond high, and in fact she thinks they are very very high, and she does not care about our 3000 hours of planning or disappointment. We can have a refund. A REFUND? There is no amount of money that will convince us to pack up and go home. Without delving into the minutia of details for how to rearrange 6000 miles, start to finish, suffice it to say Philly Girl went to work on her computer, and with the help of multiple Amtrak agents in person and on the phone, and in person agents on the phone with other agents, we flipped our trip upside down and backwards, first on to Montana, then back to Chicago on the Zephyr at the end of our trip (hopefully the winds have died down by next week).

So right now we are in 93% eclipse Chicago on this beautiful, sunny, warm spring day after a beautiful overnight ride. Did we sleep? Sort of. More on some of the logistics later. But it sure was a beautiful ride through beautiful Harper’s Ferry, WV, Pittsburgh, Sandusky (Hello Will and Missy), and into Chicago this morning.

Chicago Union Station is amazing. Built in 1925, it covers many city blocks and features beautiful design and art. We cashed in some Guest Reward points to gain access to the Metropolitan Lounge. This is a game changer on long trips offering an array of snacks, coffee, a marvelous shower (yes a shower, did you think there would be no showers?), and best of all, a place to stash our luggage while we explored Chicago and experienced the amazing eclipse as well as an amazing lunch. If you ever take the train to Chicago know that the station is a joy and is located in a beautiful area with lots to do and see in walking distance.

We’re getting ready to board the Empire Builder headed west now. While the trip we had planned got eclipsed, we’re taking it all as a sign to make the most of whatever surprises come next.

‘It’s so liberating’: The people quitting social media (BBC) When Gayle Macdonald reached a summit in Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountain range earlier this year, she didn’t just stop and take in the moment. Instead, the 45-year-old did what a great many people would do—she looked for the best spot to take a selfie for her social media accounts. Gayle even admits that she moved dangerously close to the edge while doing so. It was after that moment, for which she was berated by her husband, that she decided to quit social media. “I was like, ‘this has got to stop,’” recalls Gayle, a British expat who lives near the Spanish city of Granada. “Taking a photo was previously the first thing I thought about when I got out of the car. She says the thought of ditching the apps was much scarier than actually leaving. “Once the initial withdrawal was over, I didn’t have cravings,” she says. “It was quite liberating. I am now more than six months into my social media sobriety, and I have regained some of that sense of freedom and peace that I experienced when I quit alcohol.” For many of us, a hefty chunk of our time is spent on social media. One global study in July estimated that the average person spends two hours and 29 minutes per day on such apps and websites.

More Workers Get Side Hustles to Keep Up With Rising Costs (WSJ) As the holidays approach and America’s full-time workers feel pinched by inflation, some are turning to second jobs to supplement their incomes. The October jobs report shows the number of Americans working part-time jobs in addition to their full-time jobs has increased 6%, year-over-year, to 4.5 million people, according to statistics from the Labor Department. With unemployment at 3.7%, the job market is still strong but is showing more signs of cooling. Inflation is still eclipsing wage gains, driving some full-time workers to consider getting additional part-time jobs for the first time in their working lives. He puts in 12-hour days at the restaurant on Saturdays and Sundays, leaving him little time to spend with his wife, but he said it would be worth it.

Subtropical Storm Nicole Forecast to Become Hurricane as It Nears Florida (NYT) Subtropical Storm Nicole, which formed in the southwestern Atlantic on Monday, was forecast to become a tropical storm and begin strengthening on Tuesday as it barrels toward the northwestern Bahamas, meteorologists said. The storm was expected to be near or at hurricane strength by midweek when it approaches the east coast of Florida. In preparation, the government of the Bahamas issued a hurricane watch that was upgraded on Monday afternoon to a hurricane warning for the northwestern Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center. British grocery inflation hit record 14.7% in October (Reuters) British grocery inflation hit 14.7% in October, another new record, and it is still too early to call the ceiling, market researcher Kantar said on Tuesday. It said UK consumers would face a 682-pound ($785) jump in their annual grocery bill if they continued to buy the same items. Prices were rising fastest in products such as margarine, milk and dog food. Kantar said 27% of UK households reported that they are struggling financially—double the proportion it recorded last November.

New Prime Minister In, Thousands Of Nurses Out (Guardian) From a season of historic occurrences in the United Kingdom, we have yet another wild headline. This time it’s not inflation-fueled financial collapses or the sudden death of an infant government, but a nationwide movement. That movement? A strike of some of the most important workers in the country—nurses. According to officials of Britain’s largest nursing union, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), members across “large swathes of the country” have voted in favor of a strike. One union source predicts that “This will see the majority of services taken out, and picket lines across the country.” The news comes as patients face record waitlists—according to data released in October, over 7 million patients in England were waiting for hospital treatment in August alone. RCN officials state that, since Conservatives gained power over a decade ago, their salaries have fallen 20% in real value. In response, they’re asking for a raise of 5% plus inflation, totaling up to a 15% overall hike. The latest NHS raise for nurses promised a bump from £35,600 to around £37,000, just 4% total. Spyware Scandal in Greece (1440) Greece’s government announced yesterday it would ban the sale of spyware, the latest move amid a wiretapping scandal enveloping Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ government. The announcement follows weekend reports claiming over 30 public individuals’ phones were infected by a spyware program overseen by the government, reports Mitsotakis denied yesterday. After July security checks revealed opposition leader Nikos Androulakis had been spied on by Greek intelligence last year, Mitsotakis fired two officials and claimed he had not been aware of the espionage. Out of national security concerns, the prime minister withheld the government’s rationale for the wiretap, prompting calls for a deeper investigation from both Greek politicians as well as the European Union. The scandal in Greece comes amid broader European concerns over the use of spyware against high-ranking officials, a year after at least 14 sovereign leaders’ phones were targeted by Pegasus, a military-grade spy technology.

Lights Out in Kherson (1440) The Russian-occupied city of Kherson lost power over the weekend for the first time since Russia took control of the region. Russian-installed authorities said they are working on restoring power and blamed the outage on a “terrorist attack” by Ukrainian forces damaging power lines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned residents to be prepared for another round of attacks on its energy infrastructure by Russia’s Iranian-supplied drones. Russian strikes have destroyed about a third of the country’s power stations over the past month, and nearly 4.5 million civilians are without power. The news comes after Russia ordered civilians out of Kherson in anticipation of a Ukrainian counteroffensive to recapture the city. Ukraine has retaken around 13% of territory previously held by Russian forces, and clashes between the two forces over the next three weeks is expected to determine control of the region.

Only The Best, Brightest, And Those Devoid Of A Moral Compass (CNN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law an amendment to the partial mobilization order that the country enacted earlier this fall. The new amendment allows criminals who were conditionally convicted or released from penal colonies to be conscripted for the war in Ukraine. This means that murderers, robbers, thieves, and drug traffickers who have been released from prison are now able to serve with Russia’s armed forces. The only criminals still blocked from being conscripted are those convicted of treason, acts of terrorism, spying, or committing sex crimes against minors. Russia’s Wagner Group, a mercenary company, has reportedly already conscripted Russian prisoners for the war in Ukraine. Russian soldiers have been accused of various crimes by the U.N. and Ukraine.

Residents clash with Chinese authorities over COVID rules (AP) Police in northeastern China said that seven people have been arrested following a clash between residents and authorities enforcing COVID-19 quarantine restrictions. The violence comes as China reports new cases nationwide, with 2,230 cases reported Tuesday in the southern manufacturing and technology hub of Guangzhou. While the numbers remain relatively low, China has relentlessly pursued its strict “zero-COVID” policy of quarantines, lockdowns and daily or near-daily compulsory testing. Anti-pandemic measures have prompted backlashes across the country, forming a rarely seen challenge to Communist Party authority. It wasn’t immediately clear who was arrested after the clash. News of the arrests appeared on social media Tuesday morning, but were erased by the country’s censors before noon. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has made “zero-COVID” a hallmark of his administration, which gained a boost last month after he was granted a third five-year term in power and promoted loyalists to top positions. Those include the former party leader of Shanghai, where a draconian lockdown over the summer led to food shortages, confrontations with authorities and severe disruptions to global supply chains that have grown dependent on Chinese manufacturing and shipping.

Superyacht maintenance (Bloomberg) As Western governments have confiscated the conspicuous, hyper-luxurious yachts owned by Russian oligarchs following the invasion of Ukraine, they’ve had to deal with an under-the-radar anxiety: It’s extremely expensive and annoying to own and maintain a superyacht. Of the 153 in existence, about 30 belong to Russians. Western governments have seized over a dozen superyachts worth minimum $4 billion, with some pretty impressive impounds; Italians seized a $650 million and a $550 million yacht, and Germany has impounded a $600 million yacht. The problem is that it costs—extremely conservatively—3 percent of a ship’s value to maintain it for a year. This means that the U.S. and Italian governments are on the hook for something like $50 million a year minimum to maintain the seizures.
