Nickelback – Liverpool Echo Arena 07/05/18

We're all 'Rockstars' tonight!

Another first in both band and venue for me tonight. The Echo Arena is tonight's venue for Canadian rockers, Nickelback. Hard to believe these guys are twenty three years and nine albums into their career and still selling strong through Arenas around the globe. Charismatic front man Chad Kroeger, now 43, is currently leading the charge with his band as they progress on their 'Feed The Machine' tour following the album release of the same name last year. Having missed out on seeing them two years ago through Chad's ill health at the time, I was looking forward even more to witnessing them play live.

Supporting Nickelback tonight were none other than South African rockers, Seether! Another favourite of mine who I saw in October last year. Not often you get a support band that you love just as much as the main one you're going to see! Seether on point with their setlist as usual as they included classics like 'Gasoline', 'Words As Weapons', 'Fine Again' and 'Fake It. A forty five minute set that closed with the brilliant 'Remedy'. A perfect start to the night.

After waiting twenty minutes to view an advert to what looks like a new Documentary DVD due out soon, Nickelback arrive on stage at a prompt 8:50pm. I was impressed already! Now the show can really begin with their title track 'Feed The Machine' kicking things off. With a plethora of great songs to choose from I was never worried about the set list. So much variety from their nine records that should make it a win for most. Something that may have surprised a lot of people though was the fact that only the one song was played from their newest album. Seemed a little strange, however it was to be more of a hits show than a promotion of the new album sort of trip. Chad even said that they would be playing something from every album tonight! That meant we were treated to 'Leader Of Men' from The State (2000) and an instrumental medley from Curb (1998) which included pieces from 'Curb', 'Where?' and 'Left'. 2001's album, Silver Side Up, did of course give them the break they needed as a band with their massive hit 'How You Remind Me' which played here after another from the same record, 'Woke Up This Morning'. 'Figure You Out' and 'Someday' presented themselves wonderfully from 2003's, The Long Road. The most songs came off 2005's All The Right Reasons album. 'Animals', 'Far Away', 'Photograph' and of course their other massive hit, 'Rockstar'. Drawing two people from the crowd to sing with them, the whole arena erupts as a mass choir singing word for word as the two fans sing on stage having the time of their lives! Dark Horse (2008) is another strong record with 'Gotta Be Somebody', 'Something In Your Mouth' and tonight's closing song, 'Burn It To The Ground' all sounding fantastic. 2011's Here And Now gave us 'Lullaby' and 'When We Stand Together'. In 2014 they released No Fixed Address and from it sang 'Million Miles An Hour' tonight. A nice surprise was the addition of 'Hero' originally a duet from the film Spiderman (2002) sang by Chad himself and ex-Saliva frontman, Josey Scott. The encore consisted of 'Gotta Be Somebody' and 'Burn It To The Ground'.

A perfect end to the early May bank holiday. Chad and Co certainly brought the rock and roll to the North West. The stage lighting was on point tonight with the huge video screens making sure you didn't miss a trick.  The type of performance that explains the reason why Nickelback are still around playing in arenas across the globe. Plenty of production value and big songs. A pleasure to be a part of.
