I couldn't find the right gif for this, but I won't let that stop me!
I want to talk about that line from Ed in 1x08, where he tells Stede (re Jack)
You two actually have a lot in common
And I know there's been good discussion, and I know it's good for some fun sex jokes, but I had a THOUGHT this morning that I thought was really interesting!
Neither Stede nor Jack have any deference towards Blackbeard, and they're kinda the only people we've met at this point who treat him that way*. They think it's cool that he's Blackbeard, but they don't have any fear or sense of awe about him. (Critically, neither of them work for him, either.) As a result, they treat him like a person. Stede gets goofy with him and treats him gently. Jack gives him shit. And Ed doesn't have to perform Blackbeard. He lets down his guard. He's an asshole around Jack, yes - the kind of asshole he probably was as a much younger, deeply traumatized person trying to squeeze every ounce of fun out of any opportunity he got. (I know that in this instance Jack was manipulating him, but I think it worked so well because Jack was treating Ed like he always has.)
And:
Both Stede and Jack facilitate opportunities to bond with the crew. We see that Blackbeard has previously held himself separate from the crew. He has primarily communicated with them through Izzy, at first probably to keep himself safe and to create the sense of mystique, and probably due to depression later. But see my first point - Stede and Jack aren't thinking about Ed's role as Blackbeard. So Stede invites him to share ghost stories with the crew. Jack being around encourages Ed to act like he did when he was young, before he was a captain, playing drunken games and doing yardies. Ed doesn't need to be separate and in charge, he can just be some cool guy.
TLDR: When Ed tells Stede that Stede and Jack have a lot in common, what he means is
I don't have to be Blackbeard around you
*Later, we'll meet Anne and Mary, who also treat him this way; and we'll see him with Jackie, who does too. But at this point, it's only Stede and Jack.

✨I finished it✨
The Lighthouse and the Kraken, my silly little idea for something to do with a damaged ceramic lighthouse I had that turned into one of the most labour intense art projects I've ever done. I poured so many hours and love into this thing, and posting the progress on here and having you guys cheering it on kept me motivated to see it through❤️ (even when I had to take a break for a few weeks because my shoulder got worn out from working on it)
More closeups and a video under the cut ❤️
Check out #pennybunpirate's lighthouse for all the progress posts if you're interested 🙃
Thank you for following along, it's been a fun ride❤️

Stede the Merman saved Ed's life, and Stede the Gentleman Pirate saved Ed's life, and Stede the confused, scared, hopeful, soft little man saved Ed's life.
I love that all those facets of Stede are what Ed loves—not just the sparkly goldfish, but also the man who burst with fury at cruelty and injustice and killed a vicious bully who needed to die, and who talked a bunch of assholes who hurt Ed into immolating themselves, and who can’t really fight but can make a plan that saves them all.
Ed loves everything about Stede and I think that’s beautiful.

Thinking about "technically the fire killed those guys". It's what Ed says when Jack tells Stede that Ed once burned a ship. And we don't really talk enough about that "the fire killed those guys" is something we have at this point already seen. Stede did it. He weaponised background knowledge and passive aggression and got the posh party boat crowd to set themselves on fire, and then gleefully watched with zero regrets. And then, in Man on Fire, there's another guy Stede doesn't technically murder because it's probably the fire that killed that guy (or would have). Definitely fire involved in the death. "The fire killed those guys" happens too often to not be an intentional parallel.
Ed and Stede really are very similar characters whose situations and actions are quite alike. (Also both of their first hands-on kills are done in self-defense and defense of loved ones, and it's not a triumphant victory but a traumatising necessity.)
But, here we have two characters. Both of them burned and sank a boat full of people. One of them gleefully watched, and then never thinks about it again. The other is shown to feel shame/regret when the boat burning is mentioned.
I think I'm just going to. Put this here. For reasons.

Off sick, so of course I binge-watched OFMD - s1 yesterday and s2 today. My two key takeaways:
1. It's SOOOOOO good. I mean, guys, do you know how good this show is? It's really fucking good
2. There should be more of it. Please refer back to point 1.

OFMD Dumbasses In Love
When Stede doesn’t meet Ed on the dock, Ed immediately thinks “he hates me, he doesn’t want me”. It never occurs to him that something happened. He never thinks…well maybe a guard caught Stede. He didn’t know that Badminton kidnapped and further traumatized Stede. We know that Stede left to try to fix things; he thought he had to fix his family and save Ed from himself.
The heart of sit-coms is always misunderstanding based on miscommunication or no communication. So that scans.
If Ed and Stede would have spoken about it, if Stede explained why he was leaving, Blackbeard wouldn’t have gone to full Kraken. But then we wouldn’t have much of a show, would we?

In my head, for Ed violence is never plan A or even plan B. It’s more like plan Z.
But for Stede? It’s plan B. When talking it through doesn’t work, he goes for plan B which may or may not include committing arson.

So if this is me, then I'll do my best, I'll take all the shit so you never have to. You can be you and I'll be the rest, yeah maybe that's who the hell I am.
You gotta get better, you're all that I've got.
I've got to get better I'm all that I've got.
What I love about the entire gravy basket and particularly the MerStede scene is that like the middle line, it could have easily been the trope of Stede saving Ed. But it isn't.
Stede is giving Ed the strength, hope, and love to save himself.
Lyrics from 2085 - AJR
