I got bored of sitting in front of a laptop screen so I decided to go for a walk by the river and clear my head, which has actually just led to me thinking about the clones for an hour

And I wanted to go back to something that @heyclickadee spoke about, which is the idea that Rex retiring was not necessarily triggered by some absolutely devastating event that completely broke his resolve, for example, Echo dying.

I want to talk about another option, which is that, yes, Echo is the reason Rex left the Rebellion, but, no, it's not because he died. What if Echo was the one that encouraged it? Rex was not getting any younger and the idea of stepping back must have crossed his mind more than once. But there was always something that held him back, that kept him tied to the Rebellion. A sense of duty and loyalty that kept stopping him from going.

And maybe Echo noticed that. And maybe he was the one that told Rex that it was okay, that maybe it was time to step back and look after himself for once.

Remember, Rex was the one that told Echo that it was okay for him to leave the 501st. There was part of Echo that was holding himself back from making that decision, but Rex gave him the final nudge he needed to go with the Batch. And I like to think that this is is Echo doing the same for Rex, helping him the same way the he helped Echo.

I just had a terrible thought pop into my head while I was thinking about the remaining chapters of The World Tumbles Down.

What if Rex dies before him and Echo patch things up? What then?

Fives: Someone stole my sandwich out of the cooling chamber in the kitchen

Echo, holding said sandwich: What did the police do about it?

Fives: dammit, I lost my train of thought...

Echo: you didn't lose it. It derailed and exploded.

*a minute later*

Fives: I remembered now!

Echo: well damn. There were survivors-

Rex: *immediately dies laughing*

If it makes you feel better, my personal and very firm headcanon is that like Chopper Base was named for Chopper, who found it, Echo Base is also named for the one who discovered the site. That Echo chose to remain with the Rebellion, serving as a tactician and data analyst, when Rex decided to retire. (Echo is still working through a lot of guilt over being used as The Algorithm. It’s not his fault, but he still feels the need to help as much as he was once used to hurt.)

His team named it Echo Base over his fondly exasperated objections, mostly because they were all annoyed about the cold, most of all Echo, and they all wanted a harmless jab at him for it.

To me, he, like Rex, is still alive and well and aiding the Rebellion by the time the Battle of Endor rolls around.

When he meets Luke, Echo knows he’s a Skywalker before a word of introduction is ever spoken.

The way the droids are countering us here, the strategies I’m using, they’re all old battle plans Echo and I drew up together.

The batch is at a loss when Echo goes silent on them after a tough day so they call in the only reinforcement they know might be able to snap him out of it: Rex.

This is pure Rex and Echo hurt/comfort. It has incredibly sweet fluffy moments alongside some emotional reflection so I hope you enjoy it!

I have talked about this fic a few times before and each time I was like ‘this fic has me stuck’ and I am SO PUMPED THAT I FINALLY FINISHED IT!!! It took two full years but I finally sat down and finished it and I’m so proud of myself.
