Yet, beneath the brooding surface, many goth bands have explored themes of tranquility, solace, and personal peace. This article delves into the depths of the genre to uncover how these bands relate to the concept of peace, each in their unique…

No it’s not stupid at all! Stimulation, especially auditory, comes up as pretty significant for a lot of mental things. That’s a good guess for a band I bet! He’d probably come to enjoy Abba and Chicago because Laurie listens to them so much so it would be a Home and Safe and Laurie association. Probably he would like relaxing music, happy, sad, calm. Just not frantic. Like, I adore punk rock, but that would probably not be his thing. I think he’d want things to level him out, or focus, and LOUD and FRENETIC would not be the part of the stuff in his head he’d want to amplify. They amplify just fine on their own. He might enjoy bands like The Mountain Goats, or The Amazinf Devil. Echo & the Bunnymen. I think he’d probably enjoy less frantic prog, for the instrumental complexity. It’s a good question. Lots of small seeming things can be a big deal with mental illness. He was raised so outside of a normal human experience, almost completely in isolation after age 6, that he’s essentially having to re-learn being a human being. Everything is new, and a lot. Originally, there was meant to be a section of Out of Darkness with Michael trying to walk home to Haddonfield, and being caught in a thunderstorm while people in the houses nearby are also shooting off fireworks, and it’s the first time he’s seen really unsettled by something. I had that experience myself, and even knowing what both were and liking storms, it was a Not Fun experience for my animal panic instincts combined, and that amped up to a very different experience seemed like a good way to introduce where he was coming from in a POV section for the first time. He doesn’t feel fear at external forces easily, but it was a really good and stark picture of the kind of alone he is. Fireworks would be barely a memory. Something that belongs to humans but not him. He wasn’t ever afraid of Freddy or being in the realm or Laurie or anything in the story, not once, but was afraid of the storm and fireworks together because he just didn’t understand. It was a very lonely image. I really liked it. I ended up not, because it didn’t flow with the rest of the story, and would be extremely ideal in an audio/visual medium like film but not /quite/ as effective in pros, and this is kind of a circuitous comment, but anyway, the impact even mundane external forces can be really big to a brain that isn’t standard. I think it’s really cool you’re very aware of that and think about it while reading him.
random ass thought, but i think your version of michael might like listening to music
like just, when he goes into a catatonic state, its something he can focus on and have some sort of stimulation. it can also invoke feelings, which michael might appreciate after all the damage to his brain and how he has a hard time remembering hes a person at all
he might enjoy tv aswell for that reason but i just think music is mindless enough that he doesnt have to focus too much on it like tv. i also think he'd like to have beautiful things after nothing but pure isolation, or just hobbies, and just get to like things. because he had nothing before, but now he can explore the things he likes and doesnt like, and just be a person
i was just listening to music tho and you gave me michael brainrot so now you get to hear my ramblings lmao
I want you to know that Michael does like both of these things (music on headphones and beautiful things after one white room in Smith’s Grove for 15 years), and that’s literally exactly the first 2 things, and same order, Quentin suggests to him he try them out during the chapter Alive Inside. Of Love and Nerds
Of Love and Nerds
Photo by KoolShooters from Pexels For the sake of my mental health, I decided to go for walks. This isn’t a new thing for me; in the past, it was what I did almost every day after work. It started off as something more serious – I’d walk and began pushing myself further until it was a sprint, a job, a run. These days though, I walk in hopes to build some strength back in my lungs. And, of…

Post-Punk Essentials

It’s a genre that defies easy categorization, but at its core, post-punk is about pushing boundaries—musically, culturally, and politically. In this exploration, we delve into the essence of post-punk and…

Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain (1984)
