"TOOK C.O.D. PARCELS, POCKETED THE CASH," Toronto Star. April 21, 1913. Page 2. --- Then Wrote Checks and Signed Names of People Whom He Had Delivered To. ---- WORKED IT 3 MONTHS ---- So clever and original is the method of pilfering used by William Gannett, of Borden street, that his employers, the T. Eaton Company, did not discover his scheme until after it had been in operation three months.

Gannett to-day pleaded guilty to stealing $117 from the company and was sentenced to four months in the Central Prison.

As a driver, he collected the C.O.D. money, pocketed it, called at the nearest bank, drew up a check in favor of Eaton's, signed the customer's name for the amount, and handed it in at the end of the day.

When the checks were returned from the bank they were given to Gannett, who was told to call at the customers and collect cash. If Gannett had any money on him at the time he would pay the cash himself. The $117 is the ammount of money on checks that Gannett did not pay up on.

"The scheme was original," said Detective Armstrong, "but bound to be found out in the end, because the customers were bound to be seen by some other member of the company concerning the checks, and they would point out the forged signature."
