わちゃわちゃしてたっていいじゃない。

2016年8月、Lower Manhattan の Westfield World Trade Center (ウエストフィールド・ワールド・トレードセンター)内にオープンした、「Eataly Downtown (イータリーダウンタウン)」。

Eataly のフィロソフィーである、「Eat, Shop, and Learn」を基盤とした、 伝統的なイタリアの食材を提供するフード・リテールストアを展開する。

約45,000 sqft (約4,180㎡)の広さを持つスペースには

4つのカジュアル・レストラン 1つのアップスケール・レストラン 6つのテイクアウト・カウンター 1つのワインバー 1つのコーヒーバー があり、それ以外のセクションには、ローカルから産地直送のシーズナルな生鮮食品、オリーブオイル、サラミ、チーズなどのイタリアからのイ��ポート食材など、1万個��上の高品質なプロダクト、クッキング本やキッチンツール、エプロンやトートバッグなどの Eataly オリジナルグッズなどが雑多に並んでいる。

それから、モッツァレラ・チーズの作り方をデモンストレーションする「Mozzarella Lab (モッツァレラ・ラボ)」というスペースがあったり、パン工房もある。

ちなみに、この Eataly は、Santiago Calatrava (サンティアゴ・カラトラーバ)がデザインした Oculus ではなく、 槇文彦 デザインによる、4 World Trade Center の3階に位置しており、エスカレーターを上がった時点で、商品が溢れかえっている。

つまりわちゃわちゃなのである。

先週、日本からのお客様をお連れした際、「どこになにがあるのかわかりにくい」というのが彼らのご意見だった。確かに、エントランスからレジカウンターまでぐるっとまわらなければいけないような、一方通行的なストアレイアウトだし、オーダーも支払いもし難い。このストアは、親切さや丁寧さでは成り立っていない。

でも、それでいいじゃないか。

おもわず唾を飲み込んだり、お腹がすいてきたり、そういった瞬間に包まれるんだぜ。

最高に幸せじゃないか。

と、私は思ったのである。
