This Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) somehow secured a home on the edge of Signal Mountain. Considering how small the patch of soil is, the tree has grown to a fairly decent size. A multitude of environmental conditions had to align for this tree to survive and thrive here... and it did. Put simply, life finds a way! I recommend you find a way up your nearest mountain. Gathered pounds of eastern redcedar leaf today. This is an herb that features prominently in appalachian herbal remedies, sort of a panacea due to its cleansing and fluid-moving properties. So a decoction of this can be applied topically to kill lice or scabies, for instance, or clean corruption (infection) from a wound; taken internally for worms; or taken internally to increase circulation and paristalsis and even sweating. . . . In the 16-1700s when Ulster scots people started moving into Appalachia, they didn't know this plant. They learned about it from the native people, who were their neighbors, and in some cases their spouses and in-laws. It's called a-tsi-na in Cherokee, but since english speakers love to name plants after other plants, they called it Cedar, after the not closely related cedars of lebanon that are mentioned so often in the bible. In gaelic languages it would be called aiteal or aiteann, meaning a juniper, which it is a type of. . . . This is one of the first trees that starts growing back after an area has been cut down or burned out or otherwise turned to a field. Response to Climate Change:

Red Cedars are likely to increase in abundance due to tolerances for increased temperatures and drought in comparison to other plant species. However, the Red Cedar encroachment has become a huge issue for grasslands in the American Midwest. The invasion of red cedars usually results in reduced nutrient and water access for other plant species and eventual loss of grassland habitat in its entirety. Forest managers have used prescribed fire treatments to control the Red Cedar epidemic.

Potential Climate applications:

Although it is a highly adaptive plant with a variety of useful tolerances to help mitigate climate impacts, measures should be taken to eliminate impact on grassland ecosystems

“Loud staccato song-teacher, teacher, teacher-with geographical variation in emphasis. Flight song, often given at night, is bubbling and exuberant series of jumbled notes ending with the familiar teacher, teacher. 

Takes insects from leaf litter while walking on ground and rotting logs. (Young Ovenbirds pass through a stage of hopping while they forage.) Sometimes probes among leaf litter, hovers to take insects from foliage, or catches them in mid-air. Individuals probably defend feeding territories in winter.”
