This oak had to be felled earlier in the year. 32" diameter is too big and heavy for lifting and sawing on my bandsaw mill so I had to do some free style sawing. Há alguns anos atrás uma tempestade derrubou um Ipê Roxo (Handroanthus impetiginosus) jovem que estava na calçada de uma rua próxima à minha residência. Procuramos "desdobrar" a tora, gentilmente doada pela vizinha que havia plantado a bela árvore, em pranchas de aproximadamente 5 cm de espessura. Para isso, construí um dispositivo de semelhante ao que chamam de "Alaskan sawmill", mas muito simplificado, utilizando alguns pedaços de tubos de metal descartamos e um soldador. Usamos o dispositivo para guiar uma motosserra elétrica durante o corte da madeira, a fim de obtermos cortes paralelos. Aproveitamos e fatiamos também um pequeno tronco de Jatobá (Hymenaea courbaril), doado por um outro vizinho, que o cortou de sua calçada por ter sido atacado por insetos. O esforço valeu a pena!
