A town in New Jersey has become the center of controversy after the local high school’s yearbook removed the names of Jewish students from a page and replaced their photo with one of Muslim students — an incident that the town’s mayor called a “blatant antisemitic act.”

The 2023-2024 yearbook for East Brunswick High School replaced a photo of the Jewish Student Union (JSU) with Muslim students and erased the names of the members of the JSU, leaving a large blank space on the page.

East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen expressed outrage over the incident and said new yearbooks will be ordered.

“At a minimum, I have … been assured that new yearbooks will be ordered and distributed with the correct pictures and names,” Cohen wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “Hate has no place in East Brunswick and antisemitism will not be tolerated.”

Cohen announced there would be an investigation into the incident.

“The administration will need to determine: 1. How did this happen? 2. What person or persons are responsible? 3. Who are the yearbook advisers and who signed off on this page? 4. Did this act occur at the publisher end? 5. How will perpetrators be held accountable? 6. Does this constitute a hate crime and how will this be prosecuted?” the mayor added.

Dr. Victor Valeski, superintendent of the East Brunswick Public School System, has also addressed the incident.

“We are aware of an error in the yearbook,” Valeski said in an email on Tuesday. “We are working with the publisher to correct the yearbook. We are also investigating how the error occurred and will address that as appropriate at the conclusion of this investigation.”

Valeski also apologized for the “disappointment it has caused” and pledged to “rectify this situation.”

In an update to the community on Wednesday, the superintendent specifically apologized for “the hurt, pain, and anguish this event has caused our Jewish students, their families, and the impact this continues to have on the entire [East Brunswick] community,” according to local reports.

And that upbringing would not have been complete without a backyard. Sometimes a pool. Definitely not an in-ground pool. 

There is something to be resuscitated in the working class identity of math rock, the spirit of that second story window from American Football’s LP. The lyrical themes and the melancholy sound itself revolve around a Midwestern working class identity most of us fled when we went to university. It lives on in the dreary sound of those descending sketches of notes and solemn-- but somehow sunny-- key changes. 

 If we could construct a sketch of the math rock kid, I imagine he/she works in the gig economy, or tends bar, or serves coffee, working in spaces deemed “hipster” while not quite having the money to enjoy all the frills of the social life that label entails. There also seems to be a problem for Math Kids coping with the loss of love interests coming and going from their respective campuses. There’s a lot of “Turkey Dump” type anxiety and the time spent over Spring Breaks is a time of reflection over that first year and the feasibility of LDR’s.

day 1. “never stick too close to your dreams”

 I've got that "new start" feeling you get when you go on the first date with a girl that you'll likely think of for the rest of your life. 

I am sweaty, I am smiley, I am stoked. 

All I've ever wanted since breaking up my high school band in 2009 when we all moved away, was to get sweaty and excited and sound good playing loud. I've stuggled. I had a project in uni that was a lot of fun but only played a handful of gigs (though we did record a release I am very proud of). After that I spent years holding back my dreams while playing accordion in a bluegrass band. A few years ago I started getting the desire to get loud again and about a month in to me putting serious thoughts to writing punk songs, they kicked me out. Great timing really. 

I worked a summer for my father at the Star Track courier company, driving around cranking bands like Foley and Camp Cope on the stereo and writing songs in my phone down the highway as i delivered 4wd light bars to rural farms. I moved down to melbourne with big dreams of finding great musicians to start a band with, and two years later now and that dream was never realised. 

I met a double bass player who played for a friends band and had him record on a couple of my EPs, and I continued gigging with my fiddle player hannah. After taking my friends band "this is a robbery" on tour, I began jamming with his rythym section, two brothers from Taroona in Hobart. It sounded good, so I moved down to hobart. It wasn't my dream of being a band in melb, but it was only a one a bit hour flight from being that dream. 

We tried to jam every week but only jammed about once a month. It was okay, but it wasn't great. The rehearsals were often marred by hangovers or the bass players dog running off in to the bush and the search for it taking up all our rehearsal space time. We learnt a small handful of songs and played a few shows that were always energetic and amazing, but never tight and impressive.  I constantly made plans in my note book along the lines of "we'll rehearse all through january and I'll book studio time for march" that would then be overwritten with "we'll rehearse all through july and record in august" and after two years of that and the drummer joining a band that more suited his style, I gave up propositioning them for rehearsals.  that brings us to now. I got back from Hobart a week ago and brought my hobart friend Ella up with me to cruise around Melbourne going on dates and seeing a perth friend of ours who was here. On the last day of Ella's week up here I took her to do my favourite thing- aimlessly walk through suburbs noticing things about the space and once your legs give up, jump on public transport back home. We walked from footscray to williamstown and were having a blast, in the highest of spirits after putting up a fake "toilet" sign on a wooden door we found near the peir that was definitely not a toilet. the perfect prank. 

We were sat down at a swanky joint on the coast, having just ordered expensive pizza and cocktails having thought we were getting a good deal seeing the happy hour sign that was left out even though it was not a weekday (and hence not a happy hour). I checked my phone and was excited to see that some people I half-know had tagged drummers that they half-knew on the FB post I had made earlier in the day that read "Melb drummers, get at me". Really it was half meant in jest, as every one knows that its impossible to find a drummer in melbourne who isnt already in eleven other better bands. I'd made this post many times before and always found diddly squat luck. I didn't expect to this time and the first comment I got was "this is a tough one hey, best of luck". I and the two other people who liked that comment knew it to be true and couldnt agree more. 

Little did I know I would find some success. SIx years ago I was in Lismore, studying music at lismore southern cross university and dating a girl who I was utterly infatuated with. We'd go to every little community event, market, gig or talk we could and found ourselves at the unibar gig of a brisbane band called The Clues. We were the only people there who stood near the stage, enjoyed it and had a boogie. After a brief chat with the memebers we said seeya. I went to a another gig of theirs a few weeks later in Byron bay and drunkenly talked further with them. Lovely guys. Cool band. they broke up not too long afterwards, but I drunkenly added on FB the guitarist who I found particularly pleasant to talk to. 

Not having spoken to the guitarist since really, he commented on my post, tagging his Brisbane mate who moved to melb a few years ago. I just so happened to have met this mate of his at a Purplene reunion show a couple years back when I first arrived in Melbourne and went to the show alone. He and I drunkenly sang words towards each others faces and bonded over how wonderful it was that Purplene broke their 20 year hiatus to return for a one-off show at the old bar. We added each other on facebook, briefly noted that we shared a mutual friend in the clues guitarist and left it at that.  The drummer tagged, Ty, hit me up to send him some demos and I did. it was an ever such succinct chat.

I read these messages while eating the tastiest vegetarian (half side cheese) pizza and downing a marzapan flavoured cocktail called the GodFather. I was pretty excited about this and remained excited for the next 24hrs. The day passed both quick and slow and I drove myself in the rain with my useless old wiper blades from footscray to Brunswick east. I arrived half an hour early and was busting to piss. I wandered around in the rain looking for an alleyway to use, got quite wet, found a spot and was glad to have had a way to pass the half hour that wasn't just sitting in the car excitedly nervous. 

I knocked on the door, met Ty's lovely partner Jazzy and the small old blind dog. The rehearsal room was warm and I was offered a list of drinks "would you like a beer? a wine? a tea? a coffee? we've got juice, you could have a cordial" and I said I'd love a beer. I was then given a list of all the different beers they had and told I could ask for whatever I wanted. I wasn't sure what to say and I said I was happy with anything. Jazzy came out holding an armful of different beers against her and I was delighted to see a stubbie of Tooheys Old. I delightfully picked that one and both Jazzy and Ty agreed that it was a very good choice. 

We got straight to rehearsing and it was the most instantanous and impressive song learning I had ever been a part of. Really wonderful accents and fills in all the right places. I had a really good time and we worked through all of two new songs that I have written. I'm commented on how easy and profficient the songs were coming along and Ty replied "yeah, I'm old hat at doing this". I sweated through my shirt, bopping on my toes as i lost my voice and gave Ty the eyes whenever the tricky to remember little-fill was about to come up.  We worked through the outro of the last song and then went out the back for Ty to have a smoke. We talked about Steven the Magpie that he raised from baby and now lives in the park next door and comes over each morning at ty's whistle. We talked about possums and how the cats and dogs he owned were too old to have any luck hunting them. He showed me the massive old rear-projection TV in the back garage that he found on curbside, and then we scheduled another rehearsal for next week and I set off home, listening to the recordings we had made on my phone. 

I told Ty that I was keen to record these songs as soon as we got them tight and he is keen as well. About a month ago at a Hard Aches show, Ben David said he was interested in hearing my new songs and would be interested in helping me get them recorded. Awfully kind of him and I hope to take him up on that offer in the future. He's quite a busy person though and I am very impatient with my need to get these new songs out, so I will be looking into all posibilities of studios to get these songs recorded. I'm excited to begin rehearsing with my double-bass player Matt and have the full band release I've always dreamt about. Just gotta keep at the songwriting slog hoping good ones happen, and continue rehearsing with Hannah, Matt and Ty. 

I'm going to try to keep a journal here of the progress. I may also make it a zine. "Handwritten" is a possible name for the band, due to my affinity for handwritten journal keeping, letter writing and list making. I wanted this here post to be hand written and scanned, but i have other things to do tonight and was worried I wouldn't get this all out in time before if escaped my memory like everything does so quickly these days. 

This will be an interesting trip, as i think the musicians journey is often kept secret to create hype and suspense and make it look effortless. Its not effortless and it takes up so much of me trying to make this happen. Join me to see whether we find any success this time or I fail gloriously in public view of this blogs readers.

The Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic the night of April 14, 1912 – 110 years ago last Thursday – still, the story of the ‘unsinkable ship’ and its doomed maiden voyage, continues to spark the imagination.

There is still some work left to do to finish the model, including adding the masts, rigging, and lifeboats.

Scott says he hopes to be able to display it at his high school so his students can see the project in person.

“Maybe it will inspire some young people to start building something.”

The weekend’s got plenty of music and a couple more festivals. Check out what to see.

6/8: Bill Frisell Trio, Old Town School of Folk Music

Bill Frisell has long been one of the most innovative jazz guitarists, injecting influences from Americana/country (see Blues Dream), Malian guitar music (see his excellent The Intercontinentals), and even ambient/experimental music. To see him play in any capacity is a treat. This trio performances features bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston.

6/8: The Black Dahlia Murder, House of Blues

Tonight, Michigan death metal band The Black Dahlia Murder plays last year’s Nightbringers in its entirety, their best album since Ritual and certainly one of their best records yet. We previously covered a show of theirs in Joliet to support 2015′s Abysmal, and if that was anything to go by, they’re experts at combining melody and power on stage as well as in the studio.

Knoxville deathcore band Whitechapel (playing This Is Exile in its entirety) co-headlines. Italian death metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse and blackened death metal bands Aversions Crown and Shadow of Intent open.

6/8: Young Widows, Subterranean

Tonight, Young Widows celebrates the 10-year anniversary of their album Old Wounds by playing it in its entirety as well as playing some never-before-played tracks from their just-released compilation DECAYED: Ten Years of Cities, Wounds, Lightness, and Pain. Earlier this week, we spoke with front-man Evan Patterson about the new album and the upcoming show.

6/8: The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Lincoln Hall

There’s a reason that this band has made it to our top albums of both 2015 and 2017 and that their show three years ago at Subterranean was one of the best we’ve reviewed. The band’s trademark mix of post-rock, post-hardcore, and truly tender emo makes their sound unmistakable. Their stories, filled with tales of sexual violence, feminist revenge, and experiences with xenophobia have hit hard for many. Yet, their most successful songs remain as vaguely relatable as their music is expansive. Their live show is becoming increasingly ambient, as well, a refreshing shift for a band not content to stay within any one scene.

Baltimore Indie post-hardcore band Pianos Become The Teeth co-headline. LA garage rock trio Teenage Wrist opens.

6/8-6/10: Chicago Blues Festival, Millennium Park

Headlining performances take place in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and include tributes to founder and owner of Delmark Records Bob Koester and legendary blues musician Little Walter, as well as a performance by a living legend, Mavis Staples.

We previewed Mavis Staples’ headlining show at the Vic Theatre back in February:

“Since 2010′s stunning You Are Not Alone, Chicago legend Mavis Staples has fostered a fruitful musical relationship with another beloved Chicagoan: Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. Three out of the past four albums feature production and/or songwriting from Tweedy, and his minimalism is the perfect complement to Staples’ deep soul. Her most recent offering is If All I Was Was Black, an outward and explicit political statement. Live, Staples tends to cherry pick from her recent discography but also play Staples Singers classics and covers of The Band and Buffalo Springfield.”

Vieux Farka Toure plays the Budweiser Crossroads Stage (at South Chase Promenade) on Saturday at 2:45 P.M. The Malian singer and guitarist is more than just the son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure; he’s put out some great albums in his own right, namely his self-titled debut and 2011′s wide-ranging The Secret (I see you, Dave Matthews feature). His most recent album is last year’s Samba, which features the limber and joyous “Bonheur”.

Fantastic Negrito opens for Mavis Staples on Sunday at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. His subversive, hilarious blues punk broke out in 2016 with The Last Days of Oakland, and he’s got a new album out next Friday with Please Don’t Be Dead. So far, he’s released two songs from it: the blistering “Plastic Hamburgers” and funky “The Duffler”.

6/8-6/10: Ribfest Chcago, Lincoln Avenue from Irving Park to Berteau

You can even be a vegetarian and enjoy Ribfest because it usually books pretty good bands. This year, headliners include Southern rockers The Weeks and country punks The Waco Brothers tonight, SILY favorite Algiers and indie folk act Yoke Lore tomorrow night, and 2000′s hype kings Ra Ra Riot and Americana duo Striking Matches on Sunday.

Algiers’ The Underside of Power was one of our top albums of last year. They’re a stellar live band, lead singer Franklin James Fisher equal parts soulful and angry, the band behind him delving into everything from ramshackle post-punk to ragtime and blues.

6/9: Tech N9ne: House of Blues

Divisive and lyrically dexterous Kansas City rapper Tech N9ne comes around pretty often, but like Los Lobos, that’s reason for me to always say “I’ll catch them next time.” Eventually, you just need to bite the bullet. Albums like All 6′s and 7′s and Something Else cemented him as an ambitious rapper who can succeed when working with big concepts and other mega rappers, while recent albums like Planet and Special Effects have showed he can be a hit-maker. He’s got 20 albums to his name and a ton of other EPs. Not everything he produces is quality, but he’s pretty prolific.

Hip hop artists Krizz Kaliko, Just Juice, Joey Cool, King ISO, and Mackenzie Nicole open.

6/9: Clams Casino, East Room

We covered influential beat-maker Clams Casino’s set at Day For Night 2016, where we noted that both he and the audience seemed a bit bored. Something tells me, however, that catching him in a crowded club at night is better than catching him in a half-empty post office in the middle of the day. (I listened to Instrumentals a couple days ago, and it still bangs.)

6/9: Liz Phair, Empty Bottle

She’s got a sold out show at Empty Bottle and a major slot at this year’s Riot Fest. That’s because Matador records just released Girly-Sound to Guyville, a 25th anniversary retrospective of Liz Phair’s debut Exile in Guyville that even more notably includes remasters of her Girly Sound demo tapes. To celebrate the occasion, Phair’s set should be heavy on Guyville material, perhaps with a few highlights from Whip-Smart or Whitechocolatespaceegg.

6/9: The Mavericks, Thalia Hall

Tex-Mex band The Mavericks have been perhaps at their strongest since their 2010s reunion. 2013′s excellent In Time may be their best album as a whole, while 2015′s Mono (mixed in monophonic sound) appropriately emphasized production over hooks. Last year’s Brand New Day veered a bit towards Americana--just listen to those powered out fuzz riffs behind the Tex-Mex on “Damned (If You Do)”. Even if the new record wasn’t as good as the previous two, it was at least a symptom of a band unwilling to stay put.

6/9: Live from Here with Chris Thile, Ravinia

Chris Thile’s done it all: played with acclaimed bluegrass bands like Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, won a MacArthur Genius award, and covered Bach on a solo album. Now, he takes over for Garrison Keillor, who was accused of sexual harassment, on Live from Here (formerly A Prairie Home Companion). Special guests tomorrow night include guitarist Parker Millsap (who we just previewed), acoustic instrumentalist band Hawktail, comedian Tom Papa, and duet partner Gaby Moreno.

6/10: Traschan Sinatras, SPACE

Scottish indie pop band Trashcan Sinatras embarked on an acoustic tour last year. Now, they’re on their “One Night, Two Albums” tour, in which they’ll play in full their 1990 debut Cake & 1993 follow-up I've Seen Everything as well as selections from their more recent discography. Their last album was 2016′s Wild Pendulum--but I’d hope for cuts from 2004′s Weightlifting. 

6/10: Simon Joyner, Empty Bottle

Omaha singer-songwriter Simon Joyner is the type to have laid back and made himself a steady presence in the Americana world. Those he’s influenced and collaborated with, like Beck, Conor Oberst, and John Darnielle, have sold more records than he has, but his music remains just as present. Last year’s Step Into The Earthquake followed 2015′s excellent Grass, Branch, & Bone, which we spoke to him about at length in our feature Palpable Pain.

6/10: Hop Along, Metro Chicago

We caught Hop Along’s intimate, energetic set at House of Vans last year after they had multiple years to iron out the songs from their great Painted Shut album. This time around, they have another excellent album to their name: Bark Your Head Off, Dog, released a couple months ago. In recording the new album, the band spent extra time in the studio, resulting in songs filled with strings, Rhodes, and complex, layered harmonies. The extent to which they’re able to replicate the album live is a selling point for seeing them just as much as lead singer Frances Quinlan’s incredible voice.

6/10: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Riviera

They did it. It was an ambitious promise, but Australian psych rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard released 5 albums last year (including Murder of the Universe, reviewed on SILY). They were all good, but none as good as 2016′s truly nonstop Nonagon Infinity. Expect them to play from their entire recent discography minus Sketches of Brunswick East, which was released in collaboration with Mild High Club.

Linda Emond

Linda Marie Emond (imagined May 22, 1959) is an American stage, film, and TV performer. Emond got Tony Award decisions for her shows in Life (x) 3 (2003), Death of a Salesman (2012), and Cabaret (2014).

 Linda Emond Background

 Emond was brought into the world in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She was raised in Orange County, California, and went to Loara Elementary, Ball Junior High, and Loara High Schools (where she was homecoming sovereign). She graduated with a BA in Theater Arts from California State University, Fullerton in 1982. She got a MFA from the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of Washington, Seattle.

 Her first show before a get-together of people was in accomplice school as Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

 Linda Emond Career

 Her first master stage execution, for which she got her Equity card, was in On the Verge at The Empty Space Theater in Seattle during her last semester of graduate school.

 She worked generally in Chicago where she continued being picked for five Joseph Jefferson Awards, winning it twice for her showcases as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion and Paulina in The Winter's Tale.

 She showed up on the New York stage in the Off-Broadway play Nine Armenians in 1996 at the Manhattan Theater Club for which she got a Drama Desk Award task.

 She has acted in Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul in three separate signs, the first at the New York Theater Workshop in 2001, getting a choice for a Drama Desk Award as Outstanding Featured Actress, and winning both the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Actress and the 2002 Obie Award for Performance. She appeared in a close to play at the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2004.

 In 2011, she appeared off-Broadway in Tony Kushner's The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures as "Unfilled", fairly that was made for her.

 She was given an undertaking as "Elaine" in Craig Lucas' The Dying Gaul at the Vineyard Theater in 1998. She saw the piece of Queen Hermione in The Winter's Tale at the Public Theater making of Shakespeare in the Park in July 2010. In nearby theater, Emond has performed at Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago in David Hare's The Secret Rapture in 1990 and at the Williamstown Theater Festival in The Cherry Orchard (2004) and A.R. Truck's Far East(1998).

 On Broadway, Emond appeared in signs of the melodic 1776 (1997) as Abigail Adams, and in Yasmina Reza's play Life x 3 (2003), for which she was picked for the 2003 Tony Award as Best Featured Actress in a Play and for which she won the Outer Critics Circle Award. She included as Linda Loman in the 2012 Broadway re-attempting of Death of a Salesman, speak Philip Seymour Hoffman and as Fraulein Schneider in the 2014 recuperation of Cabaretand got Tony undertakings for the two features.

 Emond's film and TV occupations study Simone Beck for Julie and Julia (2009), Georgia O'Keeffe (2009) a made-for-TV Lifetime film, and as Abigail Adams in American Experience: John and Abigail Adams for PBS. In 2009, she played Mary Ann McCray in the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV presentation of A Dog Named Christmas. She has had rehashing parts in such New York-based TV reasoning as The Good Wife, Law and Order: SVU, Gossip Girl, Wonderland, Elementary, and The Knick.

 She is in addition a voiceover performer, having portrayed in excess of 50 scenes of the Lifetime theory Intimate Portrait. As a book recording peruser, Emond is the recipient of four Audiofile Earphones Awards and was named maybe the best voice of the Year.

 Emond co-related with Indignation (2016), a separation in Philip Roth's 2008 novel of an essentially indistinguishable name, playing Esther Messner, the mother of Logan Lerman's lead character.

Lobster Festival Maine - Dates, Times, Directions

When is the Maine Lobster Festival 2020? According to the folks at the Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce, it's very easy to calculate when the annual Rockland Lobster Festival will occur.

The festival always runs Wednesday to Sunday and begins the Wednesday before the first FULL weekend in August.

That means that the Rockland Lobster Festival 2020 will run from August 1st through August 5th, and the Maine Lobster Festival 2021 will run from July 31st through August 4th.

Where is the Rockland Maine Lobster Festival? The festival is held at the waterfront Harbor Park in downtown Rockland, Maine.

What are the Maine Lobster Festival hours? Each year a new schedule is posted.

The Maine Lobster Festival 2012 will open at noon on the first day, and then at 7:00 AM on subsequent days, for an all you can eat pancake breakfast.

Closing time ranges from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with the exception of the final day when the festival closes at 6:00 PM.

The annual Maine Lobster Festival schedule and list of entertainment is usually available late in the spring at: www.mainelobsterfestival.com.

 How to get to the Lobster Festival Maine...

 Although parking in downtown Rockland is limited, previous Maine Lobster Festivals offered free shuttle service between the free parking lot at Rockland District High School (400 Broadway, US Route 1A), MacDougal and Rockland District Middle School, and the festival fairgrounds. Hopefully, that will remain the same for the 2020 Lobster Fest in Maine.

From Boston: Approximately 185 miles. Take I-95 into Maine. Follow I-95 North to I-295, Exit 44, South Portland/Downtown Portland. Take I-295 North to Exit 28, which is U.S. Route 1 North (Coastal Route) Brunswick/Bath. Follow U.S. Route 1 to Thomaston. Rockland is another four miles on Coastal Route 1.

Panel examines neglect of Aboriginal, African Nova Scotian and poor white communities

Jim Maloney is the District War Chief for the Shubenacadie District and a leader of the Sipekne’katik First Nation-led movement in opposition to the Alton Gas caverns project. Traditionally, Mi'kmaq territory was and is split into districts which run as far west as the Gaspé peninsula and south into Maine.

“The whole idea of giving and sharing and gifting has been practised by my people for generations and generations,” he said. “We've been here for 12,000 years” -- and suffering from environmental racism for at least four hundred years of colonial history.

oportionate exposure of environmental hazards, the denial of access to sources of ecological sustenance (such as clean air, water, and natural resources), or both.

Maloney apologized for having no handouts for those who gathered in the Weldon Law building to hear the panel on March 7: “But if you could see inside my brain, you'd see I was the product of environmental racism (for 71 years),” he says. “I have a reputation for being a professional pallbearer.”

Twenty-six of the 28 kids he went to school with are now dead, he explained. Based on the disparity between the life expectancy of an indigenous person compared with a settler, “we're being cheated out of 25 years,” he says.

Maloney has worked in 235 First Nations communities in Canada and the US and has served as police chief for five. He was appointed the chief investigator on the Donald Marshall inquiry into the wrongful conviction of a Mi'kmaq man in the case of the murder of a black teenager.

“Federal and Nova Scotia courts use our resource money to fight us in court, then tell us it is illegal for us to have legal representation,” he adds. From 1927 to 1985 it was “open season on our people” -- they couldn't log, fish, or otherwise use their own land. In a similar stride, the government spent $400,000 per day on RCMP support for Irving Oil during the 2013 protests against fracking in New Brunswick but Maloney stresses that the people won in the end.

Maloney grew up with his father in a tar paper shack with a dirt floor. There was no dentist: “a doctor would put me in a headlock and rip my tooth out,” he recalls. He ate salt pork, molasses and grease and went to bed hungry at night, and went to school month after month in this fashion.

“I know how racism feels, how it smells and tastes,” he says in reference to the poverty of his youth.

But his people are victorious: “We've won over 98 per cent of Superior Court cases.” But things are getting worse in some respects: there are now more indigenous people in jails and more RCMP on reserves, with the added insult of “our own people arresting our own people,” he says.

Maloney maps out the inequality as follows: indigenous people have 28,000 square kilometers of reserve land in Canada; farmers have twice the amount – and companies like Irving own hundreds of thousands of acres.

What with Trump-era talk of walls and the expansion of oil power like Exxon Mobil in the U.S., Maloney urgently asked those gathered: “I want you to take down that wall.” In other words, his struggle is synonymous with First people's and poor people's struggles around the world.

Stuart Gilby is a lawyer who has worked exclusively on indigenous rights cases in Canada since he attended law school at the age of 42. He has written the literal book on environmental racism, and gave some examples during the panel: There is a high rate of cancer at Eel Ground First Nation, where not only old people but young people are dying. Water looks like gasoline at one point in the Miramichi River where the community is located, though it's healing itself now and there are more fish.

Acadie First Nation in Yarmouth has had a junkyard serving as a dumping ground for abandoned car parts in their community since the 1960s.

Forestry is destroying indigenous culture and land.

“The department of the Environment is generally a joke!” he quips. “Lawyers have enabled this to happen for decades: lawyers who work for the government and industry.”

“Sometimes I feel ashamed to be a Canadian,” he finished. “Sooner or later, even Donald Trump is gonna have to realize climate change is not a myth.”

(Stuart Gilby is also the legal representative for the AFNCNB, the Indian Act chiefs in New Brunswick who have presided over and signed off on many environmentally destructive projects, including fracking and Energy East –editor's note.)

Associate Professor of Nursing and panel organizer Ingrid Waldon referred to a Lincolnville resident to pinpoint environmental racism in Nova Scotia as the practise of locating “industrial waste sites next to African Nova Scotian, Native and poor, white communities.”

She added that Robert D. Ballard, so-called father of environmentalism, says the discrimination is deeply rooted in the history of excluding African American and indigenous people from jobs, particularly in the green sector, or in decision-making processes.

She said there was a strategic aversion when it came to speaking candidly about race, when compared to other factors such as class and income.

Most people know about the sad history of Africville, where African Nova Scotians were literally pushed to the margins and denied basic city services in the 1960s. Lincolnville first put up with one, then another landfill. North Preston and East Preston share a waste dump one kilometre away from both. Shelburne is known as the “Community of Widows” because of the anecdotal evidence of cancer – so much so that there are disproportionately fewer men in the area.

People believe their are links between illness and proximity to the polluting industries. Some say they cause learning disabilities and conditions such as autism. People in Lincolnville are afraid of drinking the water and this causes psychological stress.

Environmental racism is quite gendered: exposure to toxic chemicals during pregnancy pose risks postnatally. One such example is “Cancer Alley” in Sarnia where there has been a noted disparity between male and female births. In the 1980s, indigenous women were leaders in the reproductive justice rights movement to recognize such dangers to their health and children.

Other solutions include the campaign for legislation such as Bill 111 (An Act to Address Environmental Racism), youth-driven art projects, and government and student involvement.

Most of all, it takes people speaking up and sharing their own experiences, and their hopes for a brighter future. 

After the presentation, Sa'n Herney, gleefully quipped: “What is a treaty? I never signed a treaty, I didn't have my tree-dee glasses on...” He did, however, have his metaphorical water goggles because he wanted to be able “to see a fish come right up to me and kiss me on the lips.”

HEAVY TUNES FOR HEAVY HEARTS @ Whole Lotta Love Bar, November 2017

Heading off straight after my counselling session with Ruth at Piece Together Counselling, I made the hour-and-a-half journey to East Brunswick in order to support a very important cause of mine (Beyond Blue). The gig was held at the Whole Lotta Love bar which is a 15-20 minute walk from Anstey station. All the proceeds raised from tonight’s event are being donated to Beyond Blue, a charity that raises awareness about depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide prevention. https://www.beyondblue.org.au/

I began suffering from mental illness about 12-13 years ago during my final year of high school. It wasn’t actually picked up until a year or two after I graduated and I received a formal diagnosis from my GP. I’ve experienced a wide range of symptoms including feeling worthless, social isolation, loneliness, low energy, withdrawal from family and friends and not going out very often. I’ve had days whether I’ve contemplated taking my own life but thankfully that’s something I’ve left behind in my distant past.

I’ve had days where I didn’t want to get out of bed letalone leave the house. Not only did I not have any physical or mental energy to move but I had no desire or motivation at all. Finding social connection, fitting in and maintaining friendships has been something I’ve struggled with for a long time but it’s something I’m determined to keep working on. The same goes for my mental illness. I’m still on my journey to recovery. You just have to take it one day at a time.

The important thing to realise is that you’re not alone and there is plenty of help available. Having the right support network is crucial as are having coping strategies in place that work for you such as yoga and meditation, breathing exercises, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), medication, journaling, positive affirmations, adult colouring books, joining a support group, seeing a psychologist, doing basic household chores etc.

“There's nothing you can do that can't be done. Nothing you can sing that can't be sung. Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game. It's easy. ANKL...Tonight’s opening band was this four-piece Progressive Alternative Nu-Metal band from Ballarat, Victoria. I was really impressed by the performance, delivering plenty of epic technical guitar riffs, long solos and powerful monolithic vocals in the vein of Rage Against The Machine and System of a Down. RED LOTUS...This was my first time checking out this female-fronted four-piece Melodic Alternative Metalcore band and I really dug what I heard. Vocalist Stephanie rocking long Alanis Morissette-esque hair sung in a near theatrical metal style with beautiful angelic cleans and raw piercing screams. Musically, there were plenty of intense guitar riffs, pounding drums and softer melodic touches. THE AVENUE PROJECT...The last time I saw this Melodic Hardcore/Punk Rock band was a few months back during their EP launch at BANG! Once again, the boys put on a fiercely entertaining performance with lots of wild movement on stage and emotional, heartfelt lyrics screamed with loads of energy. They played several tracks from their Havoc EP including Kaoss, Anarchy, Sediments and Crustaceans plus a cheeky cover of the classic Dropkick Murphy’s song I’m Shipping Up To Boston with a few people doing some Irish jigging down the front. https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/h...

Linda Emond

Linda Marie Emond (imagined May 22, 1959) is an American stage, film, and TV performer. Emond got Tony Award decisions for her shows in Life (x) 3 (2003), Death of a Salesman (2012), and Cabaret (2014).

Emond was brought into the world in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She was raised in Orange County, California, and went to Loara Elementary, Ball Junior High, and Loara High Schools (where she was homecoming sovereign). She graduated with a BA in Theater Arts from California State University, Fullerton in 1982. She got a MFA from the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Her first show before a get-together of people was in accomplice school as Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

Her first master stage execution, for which she got her Equity card, was in On the Verge at The Empty Space Theater in Seattle during her last semester of graduate school.

She worked generally in Chicago where she continued being picked for five Joseph Jefferson Awards, winning it twice for her showcases as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion and Paulina in The Winter's Tale.

She showed up on the New York stage in the Off-Broadway play Nine Armenians in 1996 at the Manhattan Theater Club for which she got a Drama Desk Award task.

She has acted in Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul in three separate signs, the first at the New York Theater Workshop in 2001, getting a choice for a Drama Desk Award as Outstanding Featured Actress, and winning both the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Actress and the 2002 Obie Award for Performance. She appeared in a close to play at the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2004.

In 2011, she appeared off-Broadway in Tony Kushner's The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures as "Unfilled", fairly that was made for her.

She was given an undertaking as "Elaine" in Craig Lucas' The Dying Gaul at the Vineyard Theater in 1998. She saw the piece of Queen Hermione in The Winter's Tale at the Public Theater making of Shakespeare in the Park in July 2010. In nearby theater, Emond has performed at Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago in David Hare's The Secret Rapture in 1990 and at the Williamstown Theater Festival in The Cherry Orchard (2004) and A.R. Truck's Far East(1998).

On Broadway, Emond appeared in signs of the melodic 1776 (1997) as Abigail Adams, and in Yasmina Reza's play Life x 3 (2003), for which she was picked for the 2003 Tony Award as Best Featured Actress in a Play and for which she won the Outer Critics Circle Award. She included as Linda Loman in the 2012 Broadway re-attempting of Death of a Salesman, speak Philip Seymour Hoffman and as Fraulein Schneider in the 2014 recuperation of Cabaretand got Tony undertakings for the two features.

Emond's film and TV occupations study Simone Beck for Julie and Julia (2009), Georgia O'Keeffe (2009) a made-for-TV Lifetime film, and as Abigail Adams in American Experience: John and Abigail Adams for PBS. In 2009, she played Mary Ann McCray in the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV presentation of A Dog Named Christmas. She has had rehashing parts in such New York-based TV reasoning as The Good Wife, Law and Order: SVU, Gossip Girl, Wonderland, Elementary, and The Knick.

She is in addition a voiceover performer, having portrayed in excess of 50 scenes of the Lifetime theory Intimate Portrait. As a book recording peruser, Emond is the recipient of four Audiofile Earphones Awards and was named maybe the best voice of the Year.

Emond co-related with Indignation (2016), a separation in Philip Roth's 2008 novel of an essentially indistinguishable name, playing Esther Messner, the mother of Logan Lerman's lead character.

Identity Crisis

Does anybody know who I am?

 Half the UofR population was from South of Albany - Yonkers, Westchester, Manhattan, Long Island, Bronx. The whole world was on their islands (Chinatown, Little Italy, “The Village”, Wall Street, United Nations) including American popular culture (Letterman, Saturday Night Live, Broadway, Times Square). They had no need to know what lay west of the Hudson River. Their apathy toward geography was most disconcerting, and I had a huge complex about it.

 For me, geography is a part of identity. Regional accents, regional foods, regional past-times all contribute to who you are as a person. Those who grow up transiently, living in one part of the world for a year, then moving on, learn to appreciate those regionalisms, and their very transience becomes part of their identity. “Worldians” my brother calls them, those who, for whatever reasons, moved frequently during their formative years. Part of getting to know another person includes learning their geography. I felt no one cared about my geography, and so didn’t care about me.

 My parents were both born and raised in West Virginia. My childhood holidays were spent riding along old Route 52 along the Ohio River from Cincinnati to Charleston. As a pre-schooler my family lived for a time in Caracas, Venezuela. The summer of 1982, between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I bought a plane ticket to London. For over a year I saved babysitting money, gift money, “found monies” and put them in my passbook savings account. My brother Jack lived in Berlin for a time, and I had it in my head that I needed to see Europe. I bought a plane ticket and a railway pass. My parents arranged for Jack to pick me up in London, and he and I "did" Europe, in a way. He was producing/directing a play as part of the Fringe Festival in Edinborough, so off we went. We rode the train from London, and spent several days in Edinborough. Jack dropped me off at a tourist site, left to take care of business, then hours later returned to pick me up. We did this sort of thing in Edinborough, London, again in Paris, then on to Strasbourg, and to Jack’s girlfriend’s family’s cottage in West Germany and finally on to Berlin (years before the wall fell).

 I had also been a part of numerous (too numerous!) road trips with my folks across the U.S. As a pre-teen, I rode down the West Virginia turnpike in the backseat of various automobiles to deliver Jack to Wake Forest University in North Carolina. We crossed Paint Creek no fewer than eleven times each trek. As a teenager, I rode trains from Chicago to Denver, Denver to Salt Lake, Salt Lake to Portland, OR. I rode in the back of a car on both the east and west side of the Cascade Mountains. I visited the lava fields of what is now Newberry National Volcanic Monument, saw Crater Lake before the snow melted for the summer, and attended plays at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival. I rode the train from LA to Seattle, passing by the devastation of the eruption of Mount Saint Helens, and rode in the back of a car from Salem, OR back east through Idaho, to Yellowstone, then on to Mount Rushmore and through the Badlands. Mom drove right by Wall Drug without stopping, but Dad refused to miss the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.

 The summer before my sixteenth birthday, Dad flew to Toronto for work, and Mom and I drove up via Niagara Falls. We spent a couple of days at the company apartment in Toronto, and then took the train to Moncton, New Brunswick. In New Brunswick, we stayed at the Tidal Bore Inn and I witnessed the creek reverse its flow as the tidal bore rolled in from the Bay of Fundy. From there we rode the ferry to Prince Edward Island. During my Junior year of high school I spent a long weekend with friends in Chicago. Then in my Senior year I rode on a Greyhound bus from Cincinnati to Chicago and back. All the time I was growing up, my father traveled extensively for his job. When he was home, we pulled out the map, atlas, or almanac as the dinner table discussion required. I know my geography. But I had NEVER been to Boston or New York City.

 I was so frustrated with this prevalent attitude, this oblivion toward anything west of the Hudson, that I was moved to try to educate my ignorant peers. I wanted someone to care about my geography, and hence, about me.

 Ken was from Gallup, New Mexico. Like many of us on the floor, he went as far away from home as he could manage. He was from a close-knit family, his parents were traditional to the core, and Ken battled his budding homosexuality all through adolescence. He was anxious to get away and become himself. He needed distance in order to blossom. We laughed a lot together. We were both homesick, both asserting independence. He struggled to establish himself with the campus gay community - a real challenge in the mid-80s. Proverbial closet doors were still firmly shut, and HIV/AIDS was a nasty “gay disease” in the U.S. He and I laughed together about dating and how he would find someone without looking like a total moron. What does a gay person look like, anyway? He was also enthusiastic about the local queen scene, and got the girls on the floor to dress him up for Drag Queen nights at one of the local bars. Also like me, he was annoyed at the attitude of the students from New York. So, he willingly went along with my scheme.

 A system of underground tunnels connects the campus buildings. During inclement weather, this was truly a blessing. One particular tunnel was given over to graffiti. Mostly, the fraternities and sororities painted it to advertise a particular Greek house, or party, or some other social function. But there were few rules and the tunnel was there to be painted by whoever wanted to paint. Enlisting Ken’s help, along with some other friends, I acquired the necessary paint, and painted a map of the United States. It was large – very large – we found a ladder, set it up and climbed up to spray the outline of Maine up near the top of the fifteen foot high wall. Then outlined the coastline south to Florida, brought the St. Lawrence Seaway West into the mitt of Michigan, adding in the Great Lakes. We highlighted the Mississippi from Louisiana on up north, and finally on the West Coast, drew the line from Puget Sound to LA. I noted landmarks as best I could – and included what states I could reasonably reproduce; Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada. Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maine. I put a large asterisk at the appropriate bump in my rendition of the Ohio River and sprayed, “Cincinnati, it is a place” across the Midwest. I signed the work with a smiley face and “Allny, Allny, Allny” as an homage to my identity with Ross.

 Amazingly, that mural stayed up for a couple of weeks before some fraternity finally obliterated it. When walking through that tunnel, I overheard students questioning it, wondering why it had appeared. Asking, “What’s ALL NEW YORK?” I wanted to scream at them, “It’s NOT FUCKING NEW YORK YOU SELF-CENTERED BIGOTS! IT’S ALLNY, WITH YOUR TONGUE BETWEEN YOUR MOLARS.” But realized any attempt would be futile, and I’d only alienate myself even more. But, if any students were intrigued enough by my efforts to look beyond the Hudson River, I accomplished something. I find it appropriate that the closest friends I kept since leaving college were NOT from New York City. Instead, they hail from such diverse locales as Albany, Syracuse, Maryland, Eastern Pennsylvania, Eastern Oregon, South Central Massachusetts, even a Worldian, but only one native New Yorker.

 Irony of ironies, David fell in love with New York City. He spent a summer as a bike messenger in Manhattan, and later lived there for several years pursuing a career in video production. He was enthusiastic about life in The City, and left only reluctantly. Ken and his partner live there now, Ken never wants to live anywhere else.

 My wisdom teeth started coming in. My gums were sore and swollen. My mouth itched like crazy. The bottom teeth erupted first, irritating my gums even more. I called my dentist at home – the one who had fixed my two front teeth just over a month previous – and asked what to do. He checked my records, determined there were no problems with them, they weren’t impacted I had plenty of room for them. “But they itch like crazy!” “Gargle with hot salt water and hydrogen peroxide, and call me back if there are any problems.” So, while I was unlearning dumness, I still was constantly using my tongue to massage my gums. This led to another quote in Stephen Paul’s little black book, “My wisdom teeth came in and it itches, so I play with it.” It seemed everyone else in the dorm endured wisdom tooth impaction and pending extraction. Another rite of passage I missed. No tonsils out, no appendicitis, no braces, no broken bones, and no wisdom tooth extraction. I am still intact today. Even my twins were born without surgery.

 Roadway construction continued; I couldn’t get over it. One crew finished the piping and wiring and such while other crews worked to replace the curbstones. I was fascinated. First shovels excavated the soil to the side of the new roadway, and then specialty cranes lowered the curbs into place. Using small loaders, the men wrestled the stones to level. I saw one crack, but they salvaged it using some sort of bonding agent.

 After the curbs were set, HUGE dump trucks brought in load after load of gravel to fill in the roadway. Loaders moved the piles around, spreading the gravel as level as possible. Rollers, brought in on flatbeds, ironed the rocks flat smoothing the surface to the necessary grade.

Nuala Reilly has been a writer of sorts for as long as she can remember.

She grew up the second oldest in an Irish family with six siblings.  There are thirteen months between her and her older brother and fifteen years between her and her youngest one.  That’s quite an age gap but it meant that, as one of the oldest and as the oldest girl, she was always on the scene for birthday parties and sleepovers and other kid related events.  It was not unusual to find her holding down the fort with the kids while her parents kept the practical things ticking over.  More often than not, she wound up keeping guests entertained with made up fantastical tales.

By the time Reilly hit high school, she was writing poetry, short stories and plays. She had also turned into a hardcore reader, often staying up until the wee hours of the night with a flashlight and whatever book she had her nose stuck into. Once she found an author that she liked, she tended to read as much of their work as she could possibly get her hands on.  She still does so today, meaning that her book collection is ridiculously large.

She married at nineteen and had five children in eight years. The year that her youngest was born and the two years following his birth were difficult; he was premature by nearly two months and the birth was a dangerous one.  While he spent his first year of life in and out of the hospital, she went through a deep depression and some terrible health of her own, resulting in two surgeries in the space of a year and finally a hysterectomy. 

The space of time that Reilly was ill was awful, but it did get her writing again after years of running after babies and toddlers. She sent in a funny story to her local paper, The Cambridge Times, and they ran it.  This kicked off nearly five years of being a regular contributor.

In 2006, a friend of Reilly’s suggested that she send in an article to The Toronto Sun, which was holding a contest for new columnists. She beat out over four hundred others and won it, and then wrote freelance for the Sun for a year. After her success at the Sun, those same friends were telling her to try writing a novel.  She found the idea completely daunting a the time; a whole novel?

In December 2009, her first novel, Autumn Violets (featured at Fog Lit Festival 2017), was released by Crackjaw Publishing.  She has since written a second, third and fourth book and is in the middle of her fifth.

After living in southwestern Ontario for her whole life, Nuala Reilly is now happily an East Coaster.  She lives with her family in southern New Brunswick. 

Autumn Violets (summary):

Moira Ryan is a woman for whom love has never seemed to work. She has bad luck with men and has seen too many broken relationships in the lives of those she loves. She lives in the shadow of her beautiful and vivacious sister, Sloane, for whom everything seems to come easy, and whose upcoming wedding is only making her feel worse about her lonely life.

Jack Wallace can’t remember the last time he felt truly happy.  After losing his mother as a teenager, he has treated women as an escape from the pressures of life and hasn’t committed to one for more than a few dates in years.  Now his father is dying of pancreatic cancer, and his only wish for his son is to find someone to share his life with.
