The Mavericks Plan to Play as Much as Possible as Raul Malo Undergoes Cancer Treatment

- “I’m feeling great,” frontman says

Mavericks frontman Raul Malo is undergoing treatment for cancer, but the band plans to keep on playing as much as possible.

To that end, the band performed a Fourth of July gig with the Boston Pops Orchestra but canceled concerts for July 12 and 14 and rescheduled for Aug. 25 the Denver concert previously set for July 13 so Malo can begin chemotherapy for what he called “two cancerous spots” that were found after a routine checkup.

“They’ve reassured me that this is a very common form of cancer, and my odds are good,” Malo said in a statement carried by Billboard magazine.

“Fortunately, we have a plan in place, and I’m feeling great. I’ll continue to be as active as possible throughout these treatments, but it does mean a few shows may be affected this year, and we’ll have more information for you as soon as possible on that.”

The Mavericks are scheduled to perform July 18-20 in Montana and Washington.

“Our biggest thanks for your outpouring of love and support for our brother Raul, and the Malo family in this time,” the band wrote on social media.
