Me: Unlike what most adaptations show it as, the 13-year-old Heathcliff was the first one to admiringly describe Thrushcross Grange’s beautiful interior design, not Cathy. Heathcliff wasn’t naturally less inclined towards “civilization” and Cathy was not naturally more inclined towards it. The difference is that Cathy was accepted into the “civilization” and Heathcliff was rejected due to his class and race. Heathcliff didn’t reject Civilization, Civilization rejected him. And even then Heathcliff was never an impulsive wild brute but a calculating man who ascribed some inherent value to education. There are more things to be said about how this all relates to Hareton but now I am dying, goodbye.
