“Listen, guys, I feel like we’ve outgrown our starter bases.” Impulse said.
“Yeah.” Gem agreed, leaning against Impulse’s house.
“Ehh, I don’t know, I feel like I could squeeze some more builds on mine…” Pearl said, gigging when Gem elbowed her.
“I think it’s time that we go search for a place for our mega bases.” Impulse continued. “And- I guess i should have brought this up first, but I was wondering if you guys wanted to base up together. I just can’t picture myself hanging out with any other idiots.”
“Impy, we were gonna come with you whether you asked or not, it’s like our job to annoy you.” Pearl said. Gem nodded in agreement, punching him lightly so he was only slightly winded.
“Great!” Impulse said. “Well, let’s go hunting, shall we?”
“Yeah!” Gem exclaimed, and took off in a shower of rockets. Pearl and Impulse looked at each other, laughed, and took off after her.
——
“Are we there yet?”
“No.”
“…Are we there yet?”
“Gem, we don’t even know where ‘there’ is!” Impulse reminded her. Impulse, Pearl, and Gem were all flying in close formation, soaring over the unexplored lands of Hermitcraft. Pearl was doing slow loops around Impulse and Gem.
“Hmm… what about a birch forest? Guyyyysss!!!” Gem pointed to one with excitement as they passed.
“No.” Pearl and Impulse said at the same time.
“What? Guys! Listen, at least let’s stop for a rest here, okay? You’ll see how wonderful it is!” Gem did an abrupt turn in the air, headed down for the birch trees. Impulse looked at the time, sighed, but headed down after her. Pearl followed, landing lightly on the top of a tree.
“Gem, I hate to say it, but we need to get a move on, really take a look at all the places we can!” Impulse told the elf.
“Listen, snack break first, then we can keep looking.” Gem said, reaching down and stuffing some bright green grass directly into her mouth. “Plus, you can realize how lovely this biome is!”
Pearl and Impulse exchanged a look, both lounging on the grass. “I don’t know Gem… it’s not really what everyone here is looking for…” Impulse said. “It is very nice, though.” Behind him, Pearl plucked a blade of grass from the ground and chewed it a little bit, then making a face, and discreetly spitting it out.
“Oh, these trees! So lovely! And there’s a babbling brook!” Gem gestured around with a handful of grass.
“How about this: we’ll write it on the list, so we can look at it later if we don’t find something better!” Pearl suggested. Impulse nodded, taking out the small notebook he’d been keeping track of coordinates on, and scribbled down some numbers.
“Yay!” Gem exclaimed. “Okay, snack time over! I’m ready to keep looking, although I’m sure nothing will be better then this!” She stuffed her pockets with grass and took off in another flurry of rockets.
“Erase those coords.” Pearl muttered to Impulse.
“One step ahead of you, these aren’t even the real coords. I just wrote down random numbers.” Impulse whispered back. They high-fived each other and took to the sky once more, still in search of their forever homes.
——
“I think this is it, guys.”
Gem, Pearl, and Impulse stood at the sandy shoreline of the river, which wove between two large hilltops. One one side was a steep cliffside with a lush forest on top. On the other side was a scraggly collection of grass and stone, which Pearl was already itching to terraform.
“And like with a bridge in the middle so we’re all connected… omg guys, this is so lovely!” Gem sighed, munching on grass again. “I know we’re all heartbroken by the birch we left behind, but this’ll do!”
“Yup, totes heartbroken.” Impulse replied. “So, three hermits walk onto a blank canvas… I wonder what this will all look like when we’re done?” Pearl mused. They smiled at each other. They had a lot of work to do.

Gem: Hold on, I was just with the sniffers, and I got that, and that. *throws a sniffer egg and pitcher pod towards Etho*
Etho: Oh snappers! Noice, thank you very much.
*a pause, as Etho sorts his inventory*
Etho: Um… *faint laughter from Gem* I have a gift for you as well, Gem.
*Etho throws three poisonous potatoes towards Gem*
Gem, breathy and pained: Okay.
Etho, laughing: It's all I got. Sorry.
Gem: Our friendship is really tough to maintain, Etho. It's- it's hard, out here.

You woke up feeling an unusual heaviness in your limbs, a dull ache in your head, and a scratchy throat that seemed to have appeared overnight. The bed that once felt like a sanctuary now felt like a trap as you struggled to sit up, a wave of dizziness crashing over you.
“Ugh, I feel terrible,” you mumbled to yourself, barely recognizing your own voice. Your throat felt like sandpaper, and each word was a laborious effort. You reached for your phone, squinting at the bright screen to check the time. It was still early, but you knew you needed help.
“Hey guys, I think I’m sick,” you texted the group chat with your husbands. Your fingers felt clumsy, and even typing out that short message seemed to drain what little energy you had left.
It wasn’t long before you heard footsteps hurrying down the hall. The door to your room creaked open, and Minho’s concerned face appeared, quickly followed by Felix and Chan. Minho, always the observant one, was the first to approach your bed.
“Y/nnie, why didn’t you say something sooner?” Minho’s voice was gentle but laced with worry as he placed the back of his hand on your forehead. “You’re burning up.”
Felix knelt by the bed, his brows furrowed in concern. “You should’ve called us earlier. We’re here to take care of you, remember?”
Chan sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes filled with concern. “Don’t worry, we’ve got you. Let’s get you comfortable first.”
Minho disappeared into the kitchen, determined to make you some soup. You could hear the clattering of pots and pans, a reassuring sound that brought a small smile to your lips despite the discomfort.
Felix, always the sweet one, began massaging your aching limbs. His touch was gentle and soothing, working out the tension that had built up in your muscles. “This will help you feel better, I promise,” he said softly, a comforting warmth to his words.
You managed a weak smile, appreciating the effort they were putting into making you feel better. “Thanks, Felix. It already helps.”
Felix grinned, his freckles dancing on his cheeks as he did. “Good, because I’m not stopping until you’re back to your usual self. And I might throw in a few jokes to speed up the process.”
You chuckled weakly, the sound turning into a cough that made your throat burn. Felix’s hand stilled for a moment, but he quickly resumed, trying to soothe the discomfort.
Chan reached over and took your hand in his, his grip firm yet gentle. “I won’t let you go through this alone. We’re here for you, no matter what.”
A tear slipped down your cheek at his words, not from sadness but from the overwhelming gratitude you felt. “You guys are amazing. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Minho returned with a steaming bowl of soup, the aroma filling the room and making your stomach growl despite the nausea. “Alright, time for some of my special homemade soup. It’s guaranteed to make you feel better.”
He sat beside you, carefully blowing on a spoonful of soup before bringing it to your lips. “Open up, Y/nnie. Just a little at a time.”
You obediently opened your mouth, the warm broth sliding down your throat and instantly providing a bit of relief. Minho continued to feed you patiently, ensuring you ate slowly so as not to upset your stomach further.
“Thank you, Minho. This is really good,” you said between sips, feeling a bit of strength returning with each spoonful.
Minho smiled, his eyes soft with affection. “Anything for you. Just focus on getting better, okay?”
As the day went on, the three of them took turns tending to your needs. Felix continued his massages, cracking silly jokes that made you smile even when you didn’t think you had the energy to.
“What did the sick tomato say to the other tomato?” Felix asked with a grin.
You raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. “What?”
“I’m feeling a bit under the weather,” Felix replied, wiggling his eyebrows comically.
You couldn’t help but laugh, the sound blending with a cough. “That’s terrible, Felix.”
He laughed along with you, the sound lightening the heavy atmosphere in the room. “I know, but if it makes you smile, it’s worth it.”
Chan was your constant source of comfort, his presence a soothing balm to your fevered state. Whenever you felt cold, he would wrap his arms around you, holding you close and sharing his warmth. “I’m not going anywhere,” he’d whisper, his breath tickling your ear. “I’ll be right here, I promise.”
You leaned into his embrace, finding solace in his steady heartbeat and the gentle rise and fall of his chest. “I don’t want to get you sick,” you murmured, though your words were half-hearted. The comfort he provided was too precious to refuse.
“You won’t,” Chan assured you, his voice firm and unwavering. “Taking care of you is more important. We’ll worry about me later.”
Minho kept the soup coming, ensuring you stayed hydrated and nourished. He even prepared some herbal tea, its soothing properties helping to ease the soreness in your throat. Each sip felt like a small victory, a step closer to feeling normal again.
“Minho, you’re really good at this,” you said after finishing another bowl of soup. “Have you been practicing?"
He chuckled, shaking his head. “Just years of taking care of you all. Plus, it’s easy to put in the effort when it’s for someone as special as you, my beautiful wife,” he winked at you, making you blush softly.
The day stretched on, with Felix’s jokes becoming a steady background to the symphony of Minho’s cooking and Chan’s comforting presence. The combination of their care and the medicine they brought you gradually began to ease your symptoms.
As the sun set and the room grew dim, Minho suggested you try to get some rest. “Sleep is the best medicine, after all. We’ll be right here if you need anything.”
You nodded, feeling the weight of the day’s exhaustion settling in. “Thank you, all of you. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Felix tucked the blankets around you, his touch gentle and reassuring. “You don’t have to worry about that because we’re not going anywhere.”
Chan kissed your forehead, his lips cool against your fevered skin. “Sweet dreams, Y/nnie. We’ll be here when you wake up.”
You drifted off to sleep, their presence a comforting anchor in the haze of your illness. The night passed in a blur of fevered dreams and intermittent wakefulness, but every time you opened your eyes, one of them was there, keeping watch and ensuring you were never alone.
The next morning, you woke to the sound of quiet chatter and the smell of fresh coffee. Blinking blearily, you saw Minho setting a tray with breakfast on your bedside table, Felix fluffing the pillows behind you, and Chan smiling warmly from the foot of the bed.
“How are you feeling today?” Minho asked, his voice gentle as he helped you sit up.
“A bit better,” you admitted, surprised at the improvement. “Still tired, but not as bad as yesterday.”
Felix grinned, his eyes sparkling with relief. “That’s what we like to hear. More soup?”
You nodded, grateful for their continued care. “Yes, please. I think it’s working.” Minho handed you a bowl, and you sipped the warm broth slowly, savoring the taste. “Thank you, Minho. This really is the best soup I’ve ever had.”
He smiled, a hint of pride in his eyes. “I’m glad you like it. There’s plenty more where that came from.”
As you ate, Chan took your hand in his, his thumb rubbing soothing circles on your skin. “We’ll keep taking care of you until you’re back to full strength. No rush.”
Felix leaned in, his expression playful. “And I’ve got plenty more jokes to keep you entertained. Ready for another one?”
You laughed, the sound feeling more natural and less strained. “Always.”
“What do you call fake spaghetti?” Felix asked, his grin widening.
“I don’t know, what?” you replied, curious despite yourself.
“An impasta!” he exclaimed, his eyes crinkling with amusement.
You couldn’t help but laugh, the silly joke lifting your spirits. “You’re ridiculous, Felix.”
“But you love me for it,” he shot back, his grin infectious.
Chan squeezed your hand gently. “And we all love you, Y/nnie. We’re here for you, no matter what.”
Tears of gratitude welled up in your eyes again, but this time, they were accompanied by a genuine smile. “I love you all too. Thank you for everything.”
The rest of the day passed in a similar fashion, with Minho ensuring you were well-fed, Felix keeping you entertained, and Chan providing constant comfort. They took turns sitting with you, their presence a constant reminder that you were loved and cared for.
By the time night fell again, you felt significantly better. The fever had subsided, and the aches in your body had lessened. You knew you still had a way to go, but with them by your side, you felt confident you could handle anything.
“Feeling ready for bed?” Chan asked as he helped you settle back under the blankets.
“Yeah, I think so,” you replied, exhaustion creeping in once more.
Felix kissed your forehead gently. “Sweet dreams, Y/nnie. We’ll be here when you wake up.”
Minho adjusted the covers one last time, his touch tender. “Rest well. Tomorrow will be even better.”
As you closed your eyes, you felt a sense of peace wash over you. Surrounded by their love and care, you knew you were in the best possible hands. And with that comforting thought, you drifted off to sleep, your heart full of gratitude and affection for the three amazing men who had shown you just how much they cared.

also I gotta ask after my girls Gem, Pearl, and False, my beloveds
the girlsss!!
false was mentioned early on in the au, in the arena with cleo and etho, unfortunately. my bad. aside from being a strong fighter, i didn't really think about anything for her character in this au
now, i didn't mention this at all, but gem is actually cleo's sister!! she was in her own hunger games a few years after cleo's and etho was her mentor. she won, ofc <33 then she helped out a lot with the war effort and the rebuilding afterwards
hmm i haven't thought much about pearl, but i like to think soup group are together somewhere, helping to put the world back together after the revolution. i did have the idea that maybe pearl is grian's sister? and he volunteered for the hunger games to save her
thanks so much for giving me an excuse to infodump about this au!! :D

Classes, routine, and...a giant puppy?
Week 2
So far, it's been a busy and eventful two weeks here in San Sebastian! I've met a lot of people, gotten accustomed to my way around town, and have started to settle into my routine for the next 8 weeks. This post will mainly be dedicated to my university schedule and daily life (but also some fun tidbits from the week thrown in as well).
School Life
Since my program is a research internship, I'm here for a longer period of time than others. Up until this point, a group from Penn State was also here taking a 2 week design class, so a lot of the activities we did were with them as well. I'll be starting my research at some point this week because as of Friday, we just completed our Introduction to Research course. The course went over the basic principles of research methods, data collection/analysis, literature review, intellectual property rights, and more (you get the gist of it). For each lesson, we would have a different professor come in to teach it. I liked the way this was set up since it was helpful to get introduced to other members of staff from the university, along with having people we could contact later on for advice or resources. Class was everyday starting at 9am-11am, then a roughly 15 minute coffee/snack break, resuming from 11:15am-1pm. We would mostly have plenty of time to finish assignments in class, whether it was a hands-on coding lab or a short presentation to do. The schedule was another thing that I liked, since class ended in the early afternoon and we would have plenty of time to rest, explore the downtown, go to the beach, or go with the peer mentors to an activity they had planned. From the hotel where I'm staying, the walk is decently nice! I enjoy going on walks and this one is a comfortable 15ish minutes, which compared to walking across Ann Arbor's campus, isn't really that bad at all. I have some pics of the journey to class, and notice that the sidewalks are made entirely of tile, something that I thought was neat:
Tumblr media
Also, the weather kinda fluctuates during the day. It can go from being really rainy in the morning to being bright and sunny by the time class ends (much like our beloved Michigan weather).
Meals
Before class, I eat breakfast at the hotel since we have this included with our housing. It's buffet style, so a wide range of options, and there's a cook who you tell your order to after choosing from what they can make (pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, etc.). Below is an example of a typical breakfast spread.
Tumblr media
For the first two weeks, lunch has been included at the university's canteen. After class ends at 1pm, we take our lunch ticket to the cafeteria and can choose two dishes along with either a dessert, yogurt, or fruit. Everyday the options change, but usually there's some type of pasta, fish dish, meat dish, salad, or beans/soup.
Tumblr media
Featured here are some ribs, a vegetable rice dish, vanilla pudding, and fries on the left. On the right are some fish empanadillas, a strawberry yogurt, and fries. From now on, lunch and dinner are on me. Because of this, I have my next topic that I wanna talk about:
Markets!
You won't find a typical Walmart or Meijer in San Sebastian; those types of places aren't really a thing here. Instead, smaller markets are the way to go. One of the first ones that I went to was called Todotodo Spar, and it reminded me more of a 7-11 but with a wider variety of products and fresh fruits. It's the type of store you would go to when doing some small shopping, like picking up a few items (in my case some conditioner since I forgot to bring some). On a larger scale, Super Amara is an upgraded version of that. An equivalent would be a Kroger, but the products sold are more of fresh/gourmet produce. It's all very reasonably priced, with a meat, cheese, and fish section, along with selling things like cosmetics and household stuff too. There are also a lot of independent fruit/vegetable stand shops as well. These are dedicated just for that purpose, but have to be eaten within the week because it's super fresh. I ended up buying a quarter watermelon from one and it was easily a top tier purchase. If you want the freshest of the fresh, go to a place like Más que fruta!
Tumblr media
~ live, laugh, love, watermelon ~
NOW, onto some things I did this week so bear with me here we're not done yet. I surfed? Partially. More like got thrown around by the waves and a lot of seawater in my stomach. Still very fun though and would try again! Took a day trip to Bilbao for the Guggenheim museum. I keep trying to think of how to describe it and the words that come to mind are unique, eerie, odd, interesting, and puzzling? Modern art isn't exactly my favorite thing, I find it intriguing for sure and to each their own but there's much to ponder about in those exhibits. One of the larger exhibits featured spirals that you could walk through and it really made me feel like I was wandering through an acorn. It was also a little trippy. You're probably wondering what I meant by puppy in the title of this post, well here's your answer...
Say hello to Puppy, the guard dog of the Guggenheim!
Tumblr media
and here's a guest star appearance of me from another exhibit which felt like I was inside of a christmas ornament.
Tumblr media
Enough yapping from me, hope you enjoy following along with my adventures!
In the wise words of a shirt I found at bershka, "Full inspiration today, periodt"

edit: everyone, please don’t cry on this omg I’ve made 5 people comment their tears now and im terribly sorry for the tears.. I meant for this to be a light hearted story but looks like everyone is crying,, I’ll try not to make people cry now..
original prompt: where joon hwi and the rest of the gang shake some sense into her (sol a) about her self-esteem.
words: 2787 words
Sol is downstairs at the lounge, holding a clear bottle of soju. She takes another swig from the plastic bottle, hoping that the alcohol can numb her heart like it does to her head. It burns, and she’s turning woozy, but she grumbles and takes another swig.
2.02. She’s passed, at least. But she can’t help but feel upset. She wasn’t upset that she couldn’t score as well as Yeseul or BokGi, but upset that she’s satisfied with these low results. No one is going to hire her, even less offer an internship while looking at her track records.
Sol worked her ass off for this exam. She nearly died, if it wasn’t for Yeseul’s reminders to eat. Even her cold stoned face roommate bothered to place bottles of water on her desk. Yet, after all this...
“Why are you still up?” She hears Joon Hwi ask as he takes a seat next to her. She stays silent with a grim expression and turns away. Joon Hwi was the last person she wanted to see, especially when she’s in such a bad mod.
“What’s wrong?” He asks as he catches her arm just as she’s about to chug her soju.
“Everything.” She slurs. “You know I’m not even upset with my GPA? I’m upset of being happy with my shitty grades.” Joon Hwi sighs, attempting to grab her bottle away.
“I should have never came to study. I should have never tried to prove myself to be Dan!” She scolds louder. Sol knows she’s drunk in front of her best friend, but she can’t control herself. She doesn’t care.
“Kang Sol...” Joon Hwi stands up, grabbing her bottle away from her. “You’re drunk. Go back.”
“I don’t belong here, anyway.” Her slurs catch Joon Hwi in his steps.
“I never once belonged with any of you. Being with all of you just drags you all further. I should just stop burdening you all with my questions and rot in a corner. Besides, no one would care.” She softly says, her voice filled with regret and guilt.
Sol has always felt this way. Ever since she was young, Dan was always the star child. She got top grades while Sol got through in the middle rankings. Dan was always more popular, prettier, smarter. Sol learnt at a young age that no matter what, she would always be overshadowed by Dan.
Thus, she learnt to be quiet. Only ask questions when she really needs to. Stick to familiar people. Only be loud when told to, and blend in in every situation. She learnt to depreciate herself, because no one appreciated her in the first place.
Joon Hwi wants to shake her. He wants to write an entire dissertation on why Sol belongs to Hankuk. He wants to show her what he sees: a smart, caring, passionate lawyer-to-be. He wants to show her what he sees when she testified for Professor Yang in court. A confident, woman knowing her morals and rights.
“Kang Sol.” Joon Hwi says, pulling her up by her wrist. Sol pushes him away, but her touches are sloppy and weak. Sighing, Joon Hwi knows that it is useless to argue about her grades and her worth when she’s not even half conscious of what she’s doing.
He grabs her coat lying on the couch, finding her phone and plans on calling Yeseul. But it’s past 1am, but he doesn’t want to trouble Yeseul. Sighing, he contemplates calling her roomie but reality smacks when he realises she’s home. Noticing how Sol is slowly nodding off, giving in to the fatigue, it leaves Joon Hwi not much of an option to carry her back.
Fishing the room key out from her coat, he takes special care in carrying her, sweeping his arm under her knee and lifting her slowly as to not disrupt her from falling asleep. The key card is in between his fingers as he slowly and quietly makes his way up to her dorm. He thanks the deities above that no one caught him or interrupted him.
Tapping the key card, a standard ‘beep’, he pushes the door with his back, and takes care to get him and her into the dark room. He can barely see anything, especially since he has no hands to on the lights, but he makes out his way in the small room using the moonlight and what he can tell.
Joon Hwi knows which side Sol sleeps, knowing from her stories that include her rolling from the bed up to the desk. By now, Sol was sleeping soundly, a slight snore escaping her. Gently, he sets her down on her bed and reaches to take her shoes off for her. Hanging up her coat that he placed on top of her whilst he was carrying her, he finally pulled the thick blanket over her.
But he didn’t leave just yet.
“I never once belonged with any of you.”
Sol’s words echoed in his head more than he thought it would. He stopped and bent down silently by her bed side, taking a few moments to wonder to himself just how and why does she feel so unworthy.
He grabs her bottle of water from her bag, before putting it next to her phone, which is on the table. Knelt on the floor, he observes the slow rise of her chest and the way her eyes flutter and nose twitch when Sol sleeps. Just how can someone like Sol think she’s any less than what he sees?
“You belong here in Hankuk. I’ll show you just why.” His whisper barely audible, as he brushes away a stray hair on her face. With that, he takes his leave and sneaks back to his dorm. (Without getting caught)
-----
The next day, after two painkillers and a big bowl of hangover soup (left mysteriously by someone at their pantry), Sol is headed to study group. She is running a few minutes early than their scheduled timing, but she’s surprised to find the group huddled in hushed whispers.
“What are you all looking at?” Sol asks, as she sets her book at her usual corner opposite Joon Hwi. BokGi lets out a startled yelp and Yebeom clamps his mouth shut. Sol isn’t surprised to see Jiho crowded there, but is even more shocked to see Sol B crowded with them too. If it was anything, Sol B wouldn’t crowd around and discuss things, unless it concerned herself, or benefitted her grades.
“What...” Sol leans over and raises her eyebrows. Yeseul’s eyes dart nervously and she breaks into a smile. The rest of the group just shuffles back to their seats murmuring under their breath.
“Nothing, unnie! They were just discussing on what to order for lunch.” Yeseul says as she walks over to Sol and takes her bag and books from her, before setting it on the table. “Unnie, shall we get coffees?” Yeseul escorts her out of the room before Sol could react. Sol assumes that it’s due to her hangover that Yeseul is suggesting coffee, thus just following and getting a cold brew and assorted drinks for the others.
When she returns, they distribute the drinks and start discussing on what to study.
“Noona, do you have anything?” BokGi asks, a little too enthusiastically. Sol is taken aback and lost for words. She usually just follows whatever the rest want, since answering her questions will take hours. Joon Hwi gives a sympathetic smile.
“How about you share with us about a recent case? Remember the one that Professor Kim liked in particular?” Joon Hwi suggests. Sol grows quiet. Her? The worst student? Sol let’s out an uncertain laugh.
“Ah, me? I rather my roomie shares. She did better than me.” Sol says, then prepares a fresh document for note taking on her laptop.
“I didn’t do well.” Sol B says quietly, her eyes emotionless as usual, leaning back into the chair. “You did the best. Go on.” Sol is stunned and just nods uncertainly. Taking out her case notes and her reports that she submitted, she nervously discusses the topic on hand. She sneaks Joon Hwi a couple of questioning stares but he only pretends to not catch her eyes.
Everyone is enthusiastic, asking questions and when Sol is stumped, they jump in to help her. They suggest ideas and Sol has never felt so energised by their energy before. She find it fishy how Joon Hwi just sits back and she can feel him smiling whenever she makes a point right or figures out a missing link.
An hour later, when they are done expanding on Sol’s case and discussing, they break for a late lunch together.  Yebeom enters the room with bags of food, as usual over ordering. As they pass out containers of jjampong and jjajamyeon, Sol’s eyes light up when she saw the only thing that mattered in the whole order: her beloved pickles, in doubled servings.
What Sol doesn’t expect is for JiHo to dump his packet of pickles on her container of noodles.
“JiHo-ah, why...” Sol is dumbfounded for a moment as JiHo opens his pack of noodles to stir. JiHo only pushes up his glasses.
“You can have them, noona.” Sol is even more dumbfounded. This was the first time JiHo has called her noona. She didn’t care for the honourifics, and JiHo could call her by her full name for all she cared. But hearing those words from Seo JiHo’s mouth, just made her think everyone was utterly suspicious today.
“Okay, everyone is being weird. What is this?” Sol announces, hoping her tone came out fun, with no hints of anger.
“Nothing! We just know you’ve been feeling stressed, so JiHo decided to give you his share of pickles, right?” BokGi quips up, as he dives into taking the sauce to pour over the tangsuyuk, before Yebeom and him argue over pouring or dipping.
Sol, still feeling suspicious, breaks her chopsticks just as Joon Hwi picks up a pickle from her plastic saucer to put on her noodles. Her eyes dart from his chopstick to his face, but he just nods at her pickles, expressions hard to read.
Sol crunches on her pickles, but it does nothing to soothe the feeling that everyone was aware of something, but her.
-----
The rest of the week was a puzzle piece that Sol could not fix together.
She woke up everyday to a new message by Joon Hwi, sometimes sending her funny videos, or a simple “let’s get through this together”. She woke up once to her roomie handing her breakfast and coffee. It just didn’t click in Sol’s head to see the cold Sol B hand her a sandwich and coffee.
Their group chat was undoubtedly noisy, but even more so now. Something in common was how the more chatty ones would ask Sol for advice or chat and strike noisy conversations. She was used to the chaos, but she definitely didn’t feel used to having the attention on her.
As the group had earned different internships from small and large firms, Sol was going to be left in school alone, still applying and hoping for one to come her way. Her study group knew about it, and instead continued to encourage her about it. They avoided talk on their internships, and actively tried to help Sol. While Sol was grateful, she couldn’t help but wish that they would just act normal and not worry about her.
She chose to meet them for breakfast on the day of their internships. The meal was noisy as usual as they ate their sandwiches and gimbaps. They were dressed smartly in their suits with their briefcases. Sol made a fuss over everyone looking smart on their first day.
“Hurry up and eat, you’re going to be late for your internship!” Sol scolded BokGi as he and Yebeom threw comments back and forth. Everyone was off for theirs and ready with their jackets and bags. Walking with them to the door, she couldn’t help but feel like a mom to her kids, sending them to school.
“Noona! Check your table later in the libra-” Yebeom gleefully mused before BokGi clamped his mouth shut and JiHo (with much irritation) smacked his head silently.
“What?” Sol asks, turning to Joon Hwi, who was turning redder by the second. Joon Hwi closes his eyes, the same way he does when he’s embarrassed and looks away from her.
“Listen to Yebeom and check the table.” He says, finally looking at her. “We’ll see you for dinner then.” Waving a quick goodbye, the group walked away from her towards the carpark where they separated to the bus stops or in the direction of the train station.
“O-Okay…” she mutters, still confused as she carries her books and bag to her usual table at the library. She would have went to sulk at Professor Kim’s office for a while, but she instead chose to head straight to study. Professor Kim had enough on her plate and she wasn’t ready just yet to face Professor Kim with her mood.
There, at her table, lies her stack of books.
Normal, nothing out of the ordinary. Huffing out, she slumps her bag on her table, gathering the post its on the bar above the table. Most of them were just plain comments, like how she had to stop slamming her pen into her hand (it distracted students) or move out of the library cause there aren't enough seats. Opening her book on civil code, she was ready to start drilling her head before meeting Professor Kim.
Then she spots an envelope, hidden between the pages of the book.
Carefully, she picks it out and looks on the cream white paper, the only ink on it her name, written in neat handwriting. She could recognise Joon Hwi’s handwriting anywhere. A slight scoff escapes her lips and several students turn in annoyance. Realising that this was probably not the best place to be in, she grabs her books and bags (and the post its) and leaves the library. She heads to the empty study room, where she knows she’s be comfortable at.
Opening the flap, she slips out numerous slips of paper, varying degrees of length and sizes. Some words were neat, some were a little messy.

Sol-unnie, you know you’re smart, right? Your grades may not show that you are the best, but I know you are! Whenever I hear you discuss a case with the study group, I know you’re trying your best to memorise and improve. Don’t give up, unnie! I will support you till the end!

To: Sol-A noona
Yah, noona! You have to stop injuring yourself, okay? You gave us a really big scare the last time when you started nose bleeding in the midst of study group. Noona, don’t look at your grades anymore! If a man like me can get through law school so far pretty well, you can too! Fighting, noona!
Noona~ you’re really talented. The fact that you scored so well during the criminal law test and managed to spot the comma just shows for amazing you are! Noona, don’t be discouraged... seeing you discouraged makes us sad too. Your favourite dongsaeng is here to help you!
- BokGi and Yebeom

Sunbae, remember me? Stop doubting yourself and trust yourself. You’re smarter than you know and fit for court. I will support you from wherever you are. I’m grateful for you, for supporting me all this time. I think Dan would be proud of you, and so will the cookie Byeol.
Sol, you are worthy in my eyes. So stop undermining yourself. You belong in Hankuk next to me. You can’t give up now.
-Joon Hwi
-----
Sol lets a smile creep on her face as she lets a small blush rise to her face. Holding her letters to her heart, she closes her eyes, reminding herself of the past week and her friend’s efforts to cheer her on. She knew no doubt it had to be Joon Hwi who convinced everyone there to write for her despite their busy schedule. For even Sol B to help out and bother about her, it warmed her heart to have her support.
Picking her book, she pinned her hair up as she started drill into her book with a new found confidence, fuelled by her friends supporting her. But most importantly, she felt worthy. She felt loved. She felt confident. She was hopeful.
(Everyone thinks she’s worthy in their eyes, but one just thinks she’s perfect.)

Your heartbeat grew louder with each passing second as Mike abused the door with one too many knocks. You didn't know if you could talk, or breath or do anything other than vomiting though this time from the anxiety building at the pits of your stomach and not due to your very recent event of morning sickness.
"Are you alright in there?"
You choke on your own voice as you try to huff a single response. It's not really up to your judgement of you're alright or not but rather in the small white object's that rests between the thumbs and pointer fingers of each of your hands. You contemplate if there's a way to not raise any more suspicion to the blond male, you're at his house for all that matters. Nanaba called you to take care of their their twins and you happily complied to your half sister's pleas because Mike had a very important job interview. Life had taken a toll on him lately, they couldn't afford a babysitter and he was just recently fired due to his company having to cut down expenses thanks to the pandemic. Amidst this pandemonium he had to find a way to provide for his family and help Nanaba with at least a short monthly salary. So babysitting your beloved niece and nephew wasn't much of a problem. Not until now.
At first it hadn't bothered you that your period was late, you had accepted the pcos lifestyle the hard way ever since you first got it. You would track down your period in hopes you could ever predict when it would come again but it always seemed to surprise you. Sometimes it would come in a months notice only to take four months to do a full circle. At twenty three, this was the most positive outturn as a resolution to your problem. Levi was pushing you to eat healthy and exercise to get a better grip of your situation, even though you knew it was in vain. And thus, overall it didn't bother you that you hadn't had your period still, fatigue and breast inflammation were also common problems due to hormonal abnormalities so you chose not to pay any attention to those early signs either.
What had driven you to urge Levi to drop you off to the drugstore next to Nanaba's house though was that you've been having symptoms of morning sickness for almost a week now, that you had tried to push aside for Levi not to notice. He would quarantine you on your on your own and go stay with Erwin and Hange had he any suspicion of you being down with the stomach flu. The stomach flu though didn't feel like that and you knew, you had been through it one too many times, this was something different and yet you cursed at yourself for overthinking it. You had bought the pregnancy test as something that was supposed to turn out negative, as a positive resolution that you weren't pregnant and that you should quest for whatever it was that was making your stomach turn and twist every morning.
Upon finally opening the door in an attempt not to delay Mike who wanted to attend his interview, the blond male inspected your form with a harsh gaze. "You shouldn't push yourself if you're sick. We could call my mother to watch over Eli and Blaire."
"No." You pushed it off. "I'm fine Mike, it's probably that weird mushroom soup I ate yesterday, Levi insisted on not buying it but I didn't listen."
"I see." Mike said scrunching his nose at the process. Sometimes you hated that he knew you so well that he could even smell you lying, but he was Nanaba's childhood friend before her mother married your father and had you; you had practically grown up with the blond duo so for all you knew, even if he was certainly aware that you were lying he didn't push things further. He simply placed a hand on your shoulder, the brother like nature of his touch as assuring as one can be. "If you need anything call me, I'll answer as soon as possible, drink lots of water and don't wear yourself down."
You bore your eyes into his and nodded simply. Mike greeted the twins with reluctance and let out a sigh before fixing his suit perfectly on his shoulders. The small kids smiled bubbly in return and waved at their father enthusiastically. As soon as the door closed and their father got out of sight both children jumped on you with loud giggles. The act alone was enough to curl your lips into an upward position.
By noon you had fed and lulled the kids to sleep, earning some significant time to sink into the crevices of the feathery soft sofa before Nanaba came back from her shift. As tiring as Eli and Blaire were you enjoyed their teeny company. You didn't mind their lack of ability to form full understandable sentences yet, you loved how they didn't even try to spare a second thought on what they bubbled on about and you did your best to provoke them to speak correctly. They would open their arms for you, their tiny palms signaling you to take them into long affectionate hugs as they called a baby spoken version of your nickname and you would melt at it every single time. Everyone knew you much you loved the chubby cheeked sweethearts, as much as it contrasted with your usual demeanor. There was something that truly made you feel like the best version of yourself when you were around them.
Babies seemed to be a hot topic in your group of friends for a couple of months now, ever since you started helping Nanaba in the house before Mike got fired. Levi seemed very unbothered by the subject in a way that saddened you almost; sure, you might have talked about it in the past, being that he was a little older than you and he might have understood that you longed to be a mother one day, but that was as far as that one conversation had gone. He still had that bored, stoic gaze that slipped off of yours when you would encounter a baby in the street, whereas you would basically make heart eyes and weird grimaces to any infant he would just click his tongue and avert his gaze away, to any other direction as if he disapproved off your fondness.
That memory alone left you hollowing inside as you recalled of the two very much pink lines on the screen of the test this morning. Naturally you would check with a doctor before jumping to conclusions, there still was a chance that the test was at fault and you wanted to bet on simply that. If the case was that you were actually pregnant though things were more complicated than you wanted them to be. For instance you were still in University, for your last year at that, but you had excessive amounts of studying to get your hands on your degree and Levi was cornered and ready to be squished by his job for being a vice president, which was unfair as he worked for Erwin. You understood the situation though as Erwin was struggling to keep the company going especially through these rough rough times. There was also the fact that you were terrified of Levi asking you to put the baby down, with pcos wearing your system down you were panicking that you wouldn't have a chance to conceive a baby later on. What if this was your only chance? You've always longed to be a mother so it didn't matter that it came to you this early right?
The sound of the front door clicking open shook you off your thoughts immediately. For better or for worse it was Nanaba that had finally returned, eager to strip herself of her clothes and face mask and run to the bathroom. She offered you small greeting to which you only nodded, your tired mind ordering your eyes to find comfort at small shapes in the ceiling. You didn't know how long your sister took in the bathroom, but judging by the lack of giggling coming from the babies' room you supposed it wasn't for long.
"You want to wait for Levi to come pick you up or should I give you a ride home when Mike's back? He should be home soon!" She spoke as she poured water in a red metallic boiler.
"I'll just walk. I need some air."
Nanaba emitted a soft hum in response "Are you alright? You seem off."
"Oh no." You brushed her off "I was just thinking about what I should wear at Erwin and Hange's anniversary dinner next week, and what gift to buy Levi now that his birthday is coming."
"Good, I see, just don't stress alright?"
___
The way home was longer than you had initially remembered, whether it was for your inability to walk with a steady pace or mostly because it was already getting dark and cold. You wondered if Levi would be getting home by now as you neared the apartment complex the two of you resided in. By the looks of your illuminated window he was already home as expected of him this certain hour. It probably was one of those days when he didn't have a strict deadline to attend to, which, under normal circumstances, only meant more cuddles and kisses for you. Yet, tonight was different.
"Hey Levs" Your voice lingered in his brain the moment you stepped inside.
"Hey brat, welcome home." The kiss you left on his cheek as you hurriedly headed to the bathroom was different, off almost, and he picked up on it immediately. "Did Nanaba drop you off? I had asked Mike to come by tonight, he said he'd bring some tea leaves he bought for me."
He leaned at the frame of the door as he watched you wash every crevice of your face thoroughly, paying enough attention to the insides of your outer nasal cavity. He was pretty meticulous about hygiene and especially at times like these with a hole pandemic going on he wasn't taking any chances, you knew, plus you were kind of disgusted of germs lately yourself, you thought you finally understood where he was coming from. He took a few steps ahead, away from your body in search of a clean face towel to hand out to you when you were done. You have it to him, even if he seemed cold as stone that domestic lifestyle was mesmerizing to you.
"Thanks baby, you're the best." You half smiled.
"You good?"
At this point you wondered if you seriously we're so easy to read. You supposed you were off, but you were always off and unresponsive to many things so what exactly was it about today that made everyone know you had a conflict in your mind.
"Yeah I'm just tired, I walked here."
Levi clicked his tongue at that "Nanaba's home is very far away from here, have a shower and I'll rub your legs and feet." With eyes that never left yours Levi watched as your face lit up a little more, he gave you a tiny of a smile on return.
"You prooomise Levs?" You knew teasing with him could only lead to one thing, yet you did it shamelessly.
"Tch, of course, hurry up, I'm making pancakes with eggs and bacon."
Normally at the very sound of this particular food your eyes would water and your mouth would drool but the unresponsive nature of your expression only sent a new wave of worry through Levi's chest. As much as he had wanted to convince himself you were just tired, he couldn't, not after this reaction to your favorite snack. He decided not to push you into saying anything you didn't want to though. Maybe it was that enormous amount of notes you had to memorize for your next exams in addition to your fatigue and any hormonal altercations.
"Yeah" you trailed off "babe, about that, can we have cocktail shrimp? And maybe fried rice and fries? Pretty pretty please?"
Ah, there it was. Although it was a rare occasion for you not to be in the mood of his infamous pancakes, you could still have a few different cravings from time to time. Levi let out a sigh of relief as he proceeded your order trying to figure of where he should order from, last night's mushroom soup had messed your stomach up, that he knew, but you seemed to be fine now so in theory that should be enough to prevent him from whining out his concerns.
As he closed the door to the bathroom he hummed his favorite tune to himself, softly enough as not to disturb you with your bath. He picked up his phone from the kitchen table with ease before collapsing on the couch, there was a limit to what his body could take and he had surpassed that by far these past few months. Endless deadlines that took turns one after another and extra hours at the office had been killing him, mentally and physically, making him a little more grumpy than usual. In great addition his back ached, his fingers were sore and his mind felt like canned alphabet soup every single night. Perhaps, seeing him in this state was taking a toll on you as well; you were always so protective over him, almost like a mother to her child, despite being younger, and he if he had to, he'd admit he enjoyed it a little too much than he should have.
When you came out of the bathroom he gazed over you briefly, you were sitting before the end of the dresser, standing in front of the full body mirror, examining your form. He seemed to be puzzled by your demeanor once again. Normally, or up until yesterday, you would have immediately shot out to where he was seated at to plough into his arms with wet hair, only to slightly irritate him for getting him wet, not that he didn't enjoy to smell your fresh scent anyway, but it was a game of routine for you by now. It was almost as if you were seeking to be scolded at for not rushing to dry your hair. He always wanted you as healthy as ever.
You couldn't shake off your head how soft Levi's chest is. There probably wasn't a reason as to why he's sleeping shirtless tonight, your apartment was very warm, given that it was the start of December already, but you didn't complain. The feeling of creamy, milky soft skin, perfectly excused by any coarse hair was slowly putting you to sleep. You loved how Levi was so soft everywhere you touched, it was so unlike what the world perceived of him, maybe your baby's skin was going to be as smooth and perfect as his and not as dry and oily as yours. Of course the baby's skin was going to be soft, ugh and those little arms and legs, you couldn't lie to your self, deep down you were just a tad excited to have a baby, if it meant that it would look like Levi you wouldn't want to give up on it for the world.
"Levi, does Kenny keep baby pictures of you?"
"What?" The onyx haired male raised a brow at your inquiry but didn't give you enough time to repeat yourself before he answered. "My mother had so many pictures of me so I guess that it's natural that he has some and well there probably are a few pictures from after my mother's death, I'm not that sure."
In response, he only earned a hum.
"Tch, can I lay on your chest? I want you to play with my hair." His eyes pleaded with you in the darkness. Of course you could never say no to such thing, you loved it even more when he was the one sleeping on you. Another sentence left his lips, this time with a yawn as he shifted himself on you, cooing like a small child. "I'll call Kenny tomorrow, sleep now I know you need it."
____
Under any other circumstance you would have loved seeing everyone's dumbfounded faces stating at you as if they had seen the dead rise from their graves. You had to pinch your arms to remind yourself this was indeed serious and you shouldn't let out a single chuckle.
"Please tell me you're joking" Nanaba pleaded, placing her hand on yours in disbelief.
"I'm going to screeeeeam! Shorty can't even hold it in, ghaaaa!"
"Hange he will hear you through the restroom."
Hange blinked her eyes rapidly at the sound of that. "You haven't told him?" She immediately seemed to lose her enthusiasm, something you hadn't intended to happen, especially at such a night, but you knew you didn't have a say in other people's emotions.
"Hange he never seemed too fond of the idea, why would I complicated things for him?"
Mike's eyes widened in disbelief. There was no way in hell he was having this. You were practically his little sister, seeing you so tormented as you were in the moment when you spoke those words ravaged his last nerve, causing anger to clench his hands into fists. He watched as you took a small bite of your food giving the rest to Eli who was comfortably sitting on your lap, tapping his little hands on the rim of your plate. Other than the fact you broke out such news to him, Nanaba Hange and Erwin and had expressed your fears on informing your significant other, you seemed quite bubbly. Children really did bring out such a soft side of you, he knew that was for sure.
"Hange" you spoke, unphased as ever "Levi's coming please stop screaming at me, i love you but it's only making me dizzy."
It felt as if a thousand pairs of eyes were burning holes through his whole body, his head, and everywhere around his personal space bubble. Levi could feel his pulse tense just a tad, Hange's unnerving gaze and her crippling smile were fixated especially on him, making his nose itchy. There was something very different in the atmosphere around him; Nanaba wasn't eating anymore, she was more fixated on her daughter than anyone else, Erwin was nervously staring between him and you and you and Mike were trying to clean Eli's hands from the food he had just touched. When the scenery wasn't something irregular, none of you dared look eachother in the eyes, beat it that Hange was staring only at him.
"Oi, what the fuck is wrong-"
"Levi, shorty! Does Eli look like he's enjoying himself in (y/n)'s arms?" Hange turned her sweetened gaze on you, making you choke on your words, you shot her an atrociously strict glare. "Remember when Nanaba gave birth? What do you think about babies? Maybe you think they smell a lot? But what about ackerbabies?"
"Way to be discreet Han, thank you!" Your lips puckered in anger as you brought your arms to cross under your chest.
"Wait what's going on shitty glasses?"
"Yada Yada shorty, you're not getting a word from me, my lips are sealed" Hange spoke and shut her eyes to emphasize the significance of her words.
You sighed in a pathetic attempt to relieve some tention of your chest. A tight knot had formed due to anxiety, fog had clouded over your brain and you were feeling so faint and exhausted that you just wanted to get it over with. You didn't mind standing there like a fish out of water after breaking the news to him, the tention in the air was in fact what was making you suffocate in your seat. With wobbly hands you pushed Eli off your lap, not caring about the moan of disagreement he made and you shot up from your seat, announcing you had to take some fresh air. Levi had to stop Nanaba mid tracks to be able to come after you, fast enough to be there when you got out.
Naturally, you stood seated at a bench that neared the restaurant. Your hands were covering your face scratching softly through your hair, probably in attempts to calm your self down. He approached you without any second thought, this time determined to know what was it with you. Your behavior these past week had been unnerving and overly concerning to say the least. Carefully he sat himself down next to you, his right arm come around your frame comfortingly while the left one came to caress underneath your cheek.
"You should probably talk to me."
Your voice came muffled from between your palms as you still hadn't dared to look him in the eye. "Levi, I'm, I'm so sorry it's just... I'm very anxious."
"I think I figured that, brat." His voice was so soothing, it felt as if he was speaking to you in the comfort of your private room, not on a bench outside a semi fancy restaurant
"You know when Hange talked about ackerbabies she uhm, she might have had a particular baby in mind."
Levi blinked erratically for a single second before his mouth, unable to compel to his brain's orders, formed the shape of an oh. Of course, in the moment it was hard to click with any other even but he attributed that to his lack of knowledge over the situation. Had he any clue or suspicion that you could be pregnant he would have been able to realise that it wasn't that your stress had been messing with your stomach every morning and that your extreme fatigue couldn't possible align with the erratically swift rhythm of your palms. Of course, of course it wasn't a thermometer that you had disposed of in the toilet, he wanted to slap himself for being so naive as to believe that. He was strict with recycling rules, you wouldn't have just straight up there s thermometer in the trash. Fuck now's not the time to think about recycling.
With the soft, chaste kiss at the top of your hair you finally decided to turn your gaze to him. Watery eyes met with an adoring grey gaze, a gaze you've never seen at this extreme before. "I love you, you know." Another kiss meant your head got to lift a little more, just to get closer to him. "I don't say it often but you don't have to worry, I'll try to tell our kid more often."
Your eyes shimmered with adoration at his words, despite the cold weather you couldn't bring yourself to feel not even a little tingle, Levi was keeping you so warm with his words. "Really? You want this?"
"Tch why wouldn't I, you thought I'd ever let you go and leave me lonely? I've always thought you knew we're sharing the same future."
Your lips attacked his in fiery passion. It was a natural reaction to his words, an ice melting kiss, a promise for the future. There were many reasons as to why you lived Levi but maybe the fact that you would have a little stoic faced baby running around your feet made you love him a little bit more.

TerraMythos' 2020 Reading Challenge - Book 26 of 26
Tumblr media
Title: The Princess Bride (1973, 1998/2003 reprint)
Author: William Goldman
Genre/Tags: Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy, Romance, First-Person, Third-Person
Rating: 9/10
Date Began: 9/14/2020
Date Finished: 9/25/2020
Young Buttercup has found her one true love -- a farm boy named Westley. Westley leaves to seek his fortune so that the two can be happy. However, when she learns Westley’s ship was attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts, a man who takes no prisoners, she knows he must be dead. Devastated, she vows to never love again. Despite being a commoner, her beauty catches the attention of the horrid Prince Humperdinck of Florin. Buttercup is soon forced into a loveless betrothal to the Prince.
Now a princess, Buttercup is kidnapped by three mysterious men-- the Sicilian criminal philosopher Vizzini, master swordsman Inigo Montoya, and Fezzik the gentle giant-- and learns the three plan to murder her and frame the neighboring country of Guilder. However, the group is tailed by a relentless, mysterious man in black, who seems like he will stop at nothing to catch them.
"Fool!” cried the hunchback. “You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is ‘Never get involved in a land war in Asia,’ but only slightly less known is this: ‘Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.’”
He was quite cheery until the iocane powder took effect.
Minor spoilers(?) under the cut.
Somehow, I've never read The Princess Bride. Considering I read a lot and have seen the classic movie maybe two dozen times, that seems like a gross oversight on my part. So I figured, why not cap off my reading goal for the year with a classic?
It's really hard to review this book without the context of the beloved 1987 film. If you've reached this point in your life and have not seen The Princess Bride, please close this review and go watch it-- if only for the pop culture clout you'll get from it. William Goldman wrote both the book and the screenplay, and the adaptation is alarmingly faithful to the source material. Almost every classic line from "inconceivable!" to "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die" is lifted straight from the book. Aside from a few differences, the story beats are virtually the same. Reading this felt like watching an extended cut of the movie, and it's impossible for me to imagine book scenes without picturing the stellar film cast.
That's not to say they're identical pieces of media. Each has distinct advantages over the other. The Princess Bride novel is much more detailed. You learn more about supporting characters like Inigo Montoya and Fezzik and their backstories. Certain locations are different, such as the Pit of Despair actually being something more complicated/gruesome called the Zoo of Death. The written format also allows for some running jokes that are either absent or heavily modified in the film. For example, Goldman makes fun of the anachronistic nature of the story by referencing time in odd ways, like something taking place "after soup, but before Paris". Fezzik compulsively rhyming, a one-off joke in the movie, is a recurring gag in his narration. Stuff like that.
The frame story is also more complex, centered around a fictionalized version of the author (though many memorable beats from the movie's frame story are still there). The gimmick of the book is that William Goldman is adapting a "good parts version" of a classic historic fairy tale, based on what he remembers from his father reading it to him as a sick child. While I rarely see frame stories done well, Goldman utilizes his to really up the comedic value through constant editorial comments and asides. It mostly enhances the story, though the intro drags a bit, especially because it's longer in subsequent editions.
Where I think the movie shines compared to its source material is, unsurprisingly, the visual component. The sword fight choreography in the film is amazing, and while the novel makes a valiant effort, it just doesn't compare to seeing it performed. Ironically enough, I think the movie succeeds as a "good parts" version of the book by condensing the story in a satisfying way. While the book is inherently more detailed, I don't feel like anything big was lost in adaptation, just simplified or shifted around. This is so rare in film adaptations that I'm still shocked. Holes is the only other film that comes to mind that does this so well (though there’s probably other examples I’m just not aware of).
But how do I feel about the book itself? It's fun. It's set up like a fairy tale adventure story with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor about the genre. If you like classic adventure stories with seriously memetic humor and memorable characters, it's hard to go wrong with The Princess Bride. Some tropes haven't aged super well, and I think a more modern take would be interesting, but for a 1973 novel it's pretty good. I don't have much more to say about it!
The 25th anniversary edition (1998 and onward) has some bonus stuff, mainly one chapter of a (fake?) sequel called "Buttercup's Baby". The frame story again has a super long, dragging intro. There is little to the actual story, just a few bonus scenes of what happened/may happen to the main characters after the main story. While I like some of the jokes and ideas, I'm not sure I really "get it". Did Goldman work on a sequel at one point and scrap it, and published this bit for the reprint? Am I missing a joke? No idea. There's an early joke that the full thing should be out by the 50th anniversary in 2023. Unfortunately, Goldman passed in 2018, so we'll probably never see that particular joke (or surprise publication) pay off. If I really, really had to pick between the movie and the book, I think I prefer the movie just a little more. It could be nostalgia, but I feel the movie has most of the book’s memorable writing with the excellent visual presentation and stellar cast. It's a perfect realization of the source material. What more could anyone want? But I'm glad I read the book for the nostalgia trip and extra insight into one of my favorite movies.

I got tagged by @tough-girl9 to list my top 7 comfort films which turned into a top 8
I'm more of a comfort song type, so that was a tough (girl) one
1.: Treasure Planet
Tumblr media
I adore this movie! I loved it when I was smaller and I love it now. The only reason I didn't watch it to death was the fact that I lost the DVD. It's gorgeous and although the main premise is space pirates thanks to the focus on the characters it feels grounded and easier to relate to or to feel simpathy towards them. Besides Jim Hawkins being a childhood crush I could always relate to him. The feeling of being lost, aimless and the words
"- I can't watch you throw away your future like that!
- What future?"
always spoke to me. It's not an edge and teen angst fest tho, John Silver and his speech is both in character and always chokes me up and gives me hope that there are pathes that could lead to the future I want and that I wasn't abled to see.
It's the perfect movie for those who feel lost or confused and want to sail to far away planets from their current situation, those who want to be understood and given hope to.
(I could gush about the art and animation and characters for hours, but this is not the time)
Amazing background music and the songs fit well with the steampunk-ish style of the movie
2.: Ratatouille
Tumblr media
A family classic. We even have the ps2 game and it's one of those rarities which my family could watch anytime. Besides being beautiful and having a 10/10 aesthetic (and a huge dose of food p0®π) it's a grounded movie.
The premise is as feaver dream-y and goofy as it gets. A rat learns english (or french? The movie takes place in Paris but it's either confusing or I'm just a dum dum) and thanks to an imaginary friend version of his chef idol ends up in his restaurant and makes a deal with the garbage boy of whom the chef thinks can cook and reluctantly agrees give him another chance to make the soup that was actually made by (fixed by) the rat aka Remy. So the boy Linguini and Remy has to team up where it seems like Linguini is making the soup but he is actually in Remy's control.
But the movie is actually about being an artist and coming from an unexpected place and being surrounded by people who don't support you or believe in you even if they were just trying to protect you or think that it's the best for you.
Fellow artists could definetly appreciate the movie. Whether you croche, draw, animate, sculpt, dance, act or do any kind of art I would absolutely recommend.
Le Festin is great and is on loop during dinner
Warning: get food ready because you WILL get hungry. Even if it's just bread this movie will make it taste like garlic bread just you wait
3.: Strange Magic
Tumblr media
It's one of the controversial ones. Not everyone likes it and a lot hate it but that's okay.
It's one of those films where either you praise it to death or wonder which deeper layer of hell did it crawled out of. There is no in between. I'm one from the first category. Even my IT teacher called it a classic and I roped most of my friend group into the SM cult.
It has a certain tumblr aesthetic and feels like a fanficrion the best way possible. One of those where altho something unsuspected happens it's written well, the characters are in character it's finished and the grammar is proper as well.
It's a jukebox musical which is one of my fauvorite kind of musical, the covers are amazing and damn they can change up the originals songs aesthetic to it's opposite so damn well (Trouble - Elvis Presley)
It centers around love and I ain't no shipper nor romantic but even I was gushing over the main couple which is spoiler alert so that's all you get
I absolutely adore how the characters express themselves with their wings and body! I'm all about feelings and expressions!
So try it out and even if you don't like it you're allowed to stop. And if you like it: welcome to the fandom in this house we respect Marianne, the Bog King is a snack and must protect Dawn at all cost!
(this is a pick me up movie for me the other two more of a shoulder to cry on)
Speaking of crying
4.: The Little Prince
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie I was extremely suspicious of this movie. I immediately categorised it as a cheap cash grab which only use sonething known and beloved because it's known and beloved so people will buy.
I expected the Emoji Movie, I got the LEGO Movie.
This movie. Hoo boy, this movie. You know, it's nothing, I only cried 4 times after all!
It's so respectful towards the material it's given. So heartfelt and creative and artistic! It's the Little Prince sequel that fits well in modern times.
In this film the Little Prince is a story that an old man tells his new young girl of a neighbour. Both of them needed a friend and it's one of those unexpected duos where the girl is forced to be mature way too early and the man is way too childish so they balance each other out and the man gives the girl (I can't remember their names god damn it) the breath of fresh air she needed.
This movie is so damn cute! I mentioned a shoulder to cry on movies and pick me up movies, this one is both! It's a bittersweet dream!
You are going to cry. So get ready.
5.: Hunchback of Notre Dame
Tumblr media
Oh man oh God oh man oh God oh man
I'm obsessed with this movie (and musical)
It's dark and mature and definetly a-shoulder-to-cry-on movie. I love and relate to Quasimodo. Altho I'm not deformed I was always the weird girl everyone picked on and hated and I still can't understand why. I think I'm a perfectly normal person but when my mom calls me a freak/eccentric behind my back and my aunt gives me a gift with the words "since you looked nothing like the other girls on your prom..." I... I'm just more confused honestly. I'm always so damn tired and basically a hermit so thanks to that Out There hit way too close to home.
Esmeralda is a 10/10 role modell. She is a beautiful soul inside and outside. And she's romani. Which is the most hated minority in my country.
The movie deals with lust, abusive and manipulative parents, racism, religion, "ugly"ness, lonelyness. These might sound repelling but to see something similar happen to you/a character looking/being/sounding like you is worth more than life, honestly. Unless you can live through this kinship with a character, you have no idea how needed this is.
(I cried so hard watching The Grinch (2018) since I used to have Panic disorder and I'm an anxious person to see him being scared the way I do and to fiddle with his fingers and think like I do was the most comforting thing I felt in my life)
This movie is so damn gorgeous. I know I said that to almost every movie in this list but this is a biblical epic gorgeous. And of course, Hellfire is THE best Diney villain song FIGHT ME I'M RIGHT
The musical is even darker and more serious but damn it's worth a watch. It's on youtube.
6. Brother Bear
Tumblr media
This movie is *drumroll* gorgeous. Each movie on this list is gorgeous in different ways. This is nature-gorgeous.
Pick me up movie, definetly. It's mostly adorable but they tap into some meaningful things and there are tragedies happening, my dude!
Like Hunchback of Notre Dame the main subject is "who is the monster and who is the man?". This movie shows some perspective, I tell you!
7.: Coco
Tumblr media
I know the hungarian translation by heart
It's very family oriented, so if you don't have any or have a bad realtionship with it, this movie will give you a heartache
This movie takes place in Mexico and explores parts of mexican culture.
I adore and am interested in different cultures, folklore, tradition and religion so I was head over heels really quick with this movie!
Gorgeous imagery and music. Heartfelt, that last Remember Me WILL get you
8.: The Croods
Tumblr media
Y'ALL
I know, it looks like a movie that made only for kids. But dude! It's about family, change and how people deal with it. It takes place in an alternative world, where animals we know are mixed together (MOUSELEFANT!! CROCO DOGGO!!) the most adorable way possible and it takes place in prehistoric times.
Oh god, this movie is full of feelings and gorgeous imagery! Pick me up, definetly! Of course, it's full of jokes but they are so witty to me!
Sorry, I got impatient by the end of it
I would tag people if I would know anyone well in this site. The 2 people I want to tag: is already tagged me and the other one is probably too busy

Salty Tea
Word Count: 2,146
Notes: This was my old piece for the @domesticbnhazine! I previously just had it in a google doc and wanted it to have a proper place on my blog.
Summary: It had been two years since the beloved and infamous class had graduated and began their long-awaited journey of pro-heroism when a wedding invite arrived in the mail, a small cat stamp in the corner. He was shocked - he had assumed it had been a messing up of addresses, though sure enough it was to his apartment, and when he opened the envelope and saw the names ‘Izuku Midoriya’ and ‘Ochaco Uraraka’ in their glittering gold he swayed on his feet and had to catch himself on the counter.
Tumblr media
There was a lot to be said about Hero Class 1-A.
A majority of it could not be brought up, however, without the mention of Aizawa Shouta. After all, how could this group of students manage to tame the beast that had previously expelled all his students? What demon had they sold their soul too exactly to survive all their years at U.A.
Maybe the question should be asked of who exactly Aizawa had offered his soul to.
It was quite obvious - he’d laid it bare to the students of 1-A time and time again. He had sacrificed himself plenty of times for the good of his students and - as much as it pained him to admit it - he’d do it all over again if need be.
“You’re pretty soft on these kids!” Yamada had attempted to whisper in his ear sometime not long after these students had come to him - however, whispering had never been Yamada’s strong suit, and several heads suddenly popped up from the ten-paged essay they were supposed to be writing.
“I am not. Eleven pages,” Aizawa had said in response, knocking Yamada away from his desk and telling him to go bother Nemuri instead, and the heads suddenly sank back down to their papers.
“You’ve been pretty soft on these kids,” Yamada had said once in the teacher’s lounge. It was relaxed around the school - final exams had just ended, and graduation was nearing faster than Aizawa or his classroom had been prepared for.
“I have not,” Aizawa responded, stirring honey into the peppermint tea he was brewing that his class had bought him, the spoon knocking against the cat mug that his class had also gifted him. The kittens that stared up to him were all hand-painted little creatures, different for each of his student: a long-haired green Scottish fold, its tail too fluffy for its own good, constantly getting tripped on, curled around its little paws; a hissing abyssinian with bright red eyes that watched his every move of the spoon; a siamese with a scar trailing across his left eye, his ear a little mangled though a bright blue bow tied around his neck all the same. Aizawa’s vision blurred suddenly and briefly and he had to glance away so his tea wouldn’t be salty.
It had been two years since the beloved and infamous class had graduated and began their long-awaited journey of pro-heroism when a wedding invite arrived in the mail, a small cat stamp in the corner.
They’re just kids, Aizawa thought to himself, ripping the invitation further from its hold, and he started with a revelation.
They’re adults.
A meow sounded from Aizawa’s ankles, and he hesitated, glancing down to the wide-eyed burmese that was watching him, making sure he wasn’t going to topple over. Aizawa could remember the day he got this cat - remember the day Kirishima had seen it outside in the rain from the school window and had promptly bounded from his seat regardless of Aizawa trying to stop him. “It’s raining, she can’t stay outside!” Kirishima had said when he’d came back in, his uniform sopping wet and dripping a puddle on the classroom floor. Aizawa’s lecture was immediately forgotten, as all the students suddenly hopped up to go look at the kitten curled up in Kirishima’s arms.
“She looks dopey,” Bakugou said, rolling his eyes, stepping away from it, though the cat’s wide yellow eyes just followed his figure. She meowed, loud enough for the students to all let out a simultaneous squeal.
“We can’t leave her out in the cold!” Kirishima repeated, and that was how Aizawa had ended up with a wide-eyed cat in his bag on the way home that chewed on his pens.
Aizawa would give Bakugou that she did look dopey.
He glanced back to the invitation in his hands, which was heavy and cold and held a thousand of his thoughts, ranging from the first time he saw little Midoriya and little Uraraka, terrified in his class, to the day of their graduation, much taller and much wiser than Aizawa had ever expected their little babbling forms to be. There was a brief moment that he faltered in the gold hue of the letters on the paper, before he suddenly sighed much louder than needed and went to get a pen to put in his RSVP.
These kids would be the death of him, and he knew that, and he did not mind one bit.
And so, six months later, Aizawa found himself sat in the pews beside Yamada, in a pressed suit that he’d let Yamada pick the tie for. They were matching, both such a bright and obnoxious yellow that Aizawa was blinded every time he glanced down to straighten it, but he supposed it wasn’t the worst thing Yamada could have picked out. It could be decorated with brightly colored birds, or it could make noise, so Aizawa would just consider the canary colored tie a blessing for now.
Midoriya was already standing at the front, though Aizawa had thought that for once he shouldn’t have been so early. He was completely red, freckles hidden in the crimson, his scarred hands shaking just barely. Aizawa could see the Scottish fold, its too-long and too-fluffy tail getting caught in his paws and making him tumble down, when suddenly music started playing from and Yamada nudged Aizawa’s shoulder to glance behind him.
It started with Mina and Bakugou, and he was surprised that their arms were linked together without a large argument, regardless of Mina’s bright, teasing grin and nudging of Bakugou’s tensed shoulder. The hissing and snapping Abyssinian was for once silent, its red eyes only staring straight ahead, while the Sphynx beside him was only flicking her tail back and forth playfully.
Then there was Tsuyu and Kirishima, Kirishima grinning brightly and marching down the aisle, Tsuyu being dragged behind him. Neither had wanted to be painted as a cat on Aizawa’s mug - Tsuyu had wanted to be a frog, naturally, and while she’d settled on being a hopping Munchkin kitten Kirishima was not content until he was proud German Shepherd, chasing after Sero’s much too long tail. Next was Jiro and Kaminari, Kaminari a rigid Bengal that the Manx beside him had to roll her eyes at and calm down. Iida walked down the aisle with Hagakure as his side; Iida was a Siberian that sat tall and regal, and Hagakure had said she wanted to be a Persian with their smushed-in faces that she adored, only seen for the bright pink collar it wore with its jingling bell.
Lastly came Todoroki and Momo, both smiling comfortably, seemingly at something shared a moment before the doors open - perhaps about Bakugou’s for once uncomfortable stance. Aizawa thought of the Siamese, with its torn ear and bright blue bow that was too big for its little frame, and when he saw Momo with her long hair down he had a remembrance of the Russian blue on his mug, pristine and beautiful with its perfectly groomed coat. He almost forgot what he was truly here for, wondering if he’d just came to check up on his students, who, yes, thank you, thank you, were alive and well, when Yamada shoved him once more and his breath caught in his throat.
Uraraka suddenly stepped out into the aisle, her father by her side. Aizawa had not thought he’d ever seen her in a long dress, and he’d never truly expected it, though here she was, in a long white wedding gown that flared out at her hips. She was grinning, tears already in her eyes, and Aizawa could not remember when exactly he’d felt tears pricking at the back of his own eyes. Uraraka still had her red, round cheeks, and Aizawa was suddenly overcome with the idea that he didn’t want Yamada to see him cry here when he saw that Yamada was already bawling. Uraraka was a small little ragdoll on his mug, fur a little pink at its cheeks, sitting beside the Scottish fold and trying to help it walk a little further without tripping on its tail, and when Aizawa turned some in his seat he saw the little Scottish fold crying as well.
Aizawa did not bother to stop the tear that fell down his cheek for once.
Yamada suddenly clapped Aizawa much too forcefully on his shoulder, jostling several more tears down his cheeks that he did reach up to hurriedly brush away. “It’s amazing that they’ve come this far, y’know?” he said in-between choked sobs.
Aizawa paused for a moment, before he slowly nodded his head, turning to watch Uraraka once more as her father led her down the aisle.
“Yeah,” he said quietly, underneath his breath, “Amazing.”
Throughout the whole ceremony the two teachers continued their tears; Yamada, loud and choking, Aizawa silent and almost serene. Aizawa however had managed to calm his crying by the time of the reception, while Yamada was still a sniffling mess beside him.
“Stop crying. It’s going to make your soup salty,” Aizawa told him once they’d sat down at a table with several of the other teachers, Nemuri teasingly nudging his elbow.
“Maybe I like it that way,” Yamada responded wetly, nudging Nemuri back.
At one point throughout the ceremony Kirishima made his way over to the reminiscing teachers’ table, pulling up a chair beside Aizawa.
“How’s that kitten?” he asked, still with the bright, sharp-toothed grin that he’d had since the first day he’d stepped foot in class 1-A.
Bakugou was not far behind. “Still look as dopey?” he asked, still with the sharp and smart gleam to his eyes.
Had they really aged, or was this just another day in the classroom, just another day of pretend?
Uraraka came up behind Yamada in her beautiful long dress, glittery and sparkling and Aizawa knew this was in no way and every way the same class that had left his care all those years ago.
“Yeah, still dopey,” Aizawa responded, and Uraraka laughed, Yamada giving a start when he realized she was behind him, suddenly starting his sobbing full force again.
“Aizawa-sensei!” Midoriya began as he came up beside his wife, reaching to place a hand to her side as he neared. It was such a strange sight, Aizawa thought, that he wasn’t stammering, that his hands weren’t shaking.
“You don’t have to call me that anymore,” Aizawa started to say, waving that off, however Kirishima pounced, clapping a hand down on his shoulder.
“Really, Shoto-san-“
“Never mind,” Aizawa said in response, while Yamada laughed loudly beside him.
“Speaking of that. I guess your last name is Midoriya, hmm, Ochaco-chan?” he asked, still shamelessly with the tears trailing down his cheeks, turning in his chair to the newlyweds behind him.
“You’re right! It’ll be something to get used to,” she said, grinning as she glanced over to her husband, and Yamada dabbed at his eyes, sighing over-dramatically about young love.
“Aizawa-sensei!” came another voice, Hagakure bounding up to join the table. “We all need a picture together!”
“Is that necessary-“ Aizawa began to say, though there was a sudden uproar cheer for a photo, Yamada the loudest of them all.
“Okay, okay!” Aizawa agreed, effectively settling them all down as Kirishima gathered the rest of the wedding party, his students grinning so brightly at him that Aizawa was almost blinded.
“Come on!” he was tugged from his chair by Kaminari and Kirishima, while Nemuri giggled and Yamada offered to take the photo. Ochaco grinned as he joined them, wrapping an arm around him and Midoriya while on the other side of him Kirishima hooked an arm around his shoulders.
“Everyone! You too, Bakugou!” Kirishima hooted, and, though he rolled his eyes, he still joined in, until everyone had their arms wrapped around someone.
“Smile!” Yamada said, and, apparently not satisfied, he repeated it louder. “SMILE!”
Aizawa was suddenly overcome with a feeling he could not place, surrounded by his old students at an event he’d never fathomed taking place, in a bright yellow tie that did not fit him. He could not believe he’d watched these children grow from students to heroes, from best friends to husband and wife, from children to adults. He felt the same uncomfortable pricking behind his eyes that had been following him all day, and he could not stop the tears that unexpectedly came down his cheeks.
Yamada only grinned a bright grin himself and snapped the photo.

rose’s relationships pt 001.
so !! rose lost her parents at an early age. she doesn’t remember how they passed ( most likely due to an accident ) but she was not without love growing up. as they say, it takes a village to raise a child. she is a beloved child from the city liore; a child to many who have children + those who are childless. women ( mothers, grandmothers, aunties ) would take turns taking care of her and teaching her the ways of girlhood, as well as general knowledge of taking care of oneself, which made her quite independent early on.  this man, in particular, the recurring in her life in both ‘03 + brotherhood, and i suppose i want that to mean something. he has no name ( he looks like an ignacio to me // my love for ugly betty is showing lmao // plus i hc the people of liore as indigenous mexican with their own practicing religion which could’ve been derived from something similar to the ishvalans // saves that for another hc maybe ) but he is somewhat of a parental figure, as well as a mentor. his wife brought rose in from time to time, cooking for her &teaching her how to cook. they had no children of their own, but treated rose tenderly like their own. once she got older, she would help ignacio run his soup kitchen / little eatery and run errands for him. her first job was with him, so that solidified the relationship quite well.  around 15-16 years old, she met her boyfriend, cain. he was a simple / kind boy who tended to his parent’s market and helped run the family business. they met when she was running errands, picking up local supplies. it was instant puppy-love, and for the first time in her life, rose felt like she was able to depend on someone who wasn’t considered family. she loved cain genuinely + with her whole heart. they only dated for a year, but there was definitely talk about marriage ( which tbh wouldn’t be uncommon to marry young / start a family ) before his death in an accident. she became depressed for quite sometime before cornello appeared. while the townsfolk who cared for her when she was small made their concerns known to rose &offered to do more to help support her in any way possible, she stopped leaning on them briefly, as her time was spent going as much good as possible in order for cain to be resurrected. post-cornello/envy, much of the town is divided on those who opposed / those who were for cornello. majority of rose’s closest “family” were opposed of him, knowing he had lied and manipulated them all into serving him, using them blindingly. and those were the people whom helped rebuild liore after the military “stepped in” to liberate the people of liore from his tyrant behavior. ( skipping the holy mother arc * ) again, many of the women became close kin to her. they helped treat from her sexual assault. they helped regain her confidence in herself, despite her heart feeling rather jaded by the reality of what fell upon them. the men were as equally protective of her, wanting to riot against the military for their senseless attacks on their city + people. the people of liore are kind people. humble, generous, even when they have little to give. whether you need a job, some food, a bed to sleep in, these people who rose grew close with offered kindness and she would give it back tenfold. in my default verse, rose is older now, 21-22 years old. she still works for ignacio, still in liore, and almost done with the completion of liore’s newly built ( newly strong ) community. she has a tight-knit group within the city, knows everyone + their kids &is seen as an angel or joan of arc that has helped shaped liore into what it is now.

Old Writing
Alright. Okay. This... is the first chapter of my first fic involving Mark and Jack (Dan and Phil are also there? For some reason?) from back when I was 13.
I wanted to post more old writing because I think it’s fun to look back at where I started and where I am now, you know?
I had... no idea, how to write Mark and Jack back then. I’d literally started watching them... like, a month or two prior or something?
So, yeah. 13 year old Sid’s writing, all the way from Wattpad. Including the Author’s notes. I used to call my readers “Fanfares”. Yup.
Hey there Fanfares! Just a quick author's note before the story. There will be no cussing. Yes, I am fully aware of the language that all these YouTubers use, but this will be a swear-free book. My excuse is that, since we've never heard the Gmod characters cuss, cuss words don't exist in their dimension and when they were pulled in the YouTubers lost their ability to cuss. Also, I still have no idea what to call Sue, so I'm just going with he/him. Now that that's done with, enjoy!
Mark stood behind the stage, waiting for everyone else to show up. He had gotten there a couple minutes early by accident. That's when he heard a familiar Irish accent.
"I'm here! I'm not late am I?!" Jack shouted as he ran in.
"Nope. No one else is even here yet," Mark told him. Jack wiped his brow.
"Phew! I thought I was late. Who else is coming?"
"I think it's Felix, Dan, Phil, and some gamers."
"Cool!" Jack exclaimed. The two waited for everyone else to arrive.
Meanwhile, trouble was brewing in a whole other universe. The VenturianTale Gmod universe. The Acachalla family was fighting off an army of bus-sized chickens with laser eyes, but that wasn't the trouble. Well, it was part of the trouble, but not all of it. Papa Achachalla shot at the poultry with his most beloved shotgun, Gertrude was flinging her crowbar around, Sally had a rocket launcher, Billy had grenades, Spencer was out of the basement and slicing at the beasts with a sword, and Sue was in the treehouse trying to be a sniper. He ended up injuring the Achachallas more than the chickens, but that was to be expected. What wasn't expected was Fred "Spooker" Soup and Chris "Colon" Ghosty randomly arriving.
"Why are we here again?" Colon asked, adjusting his blue beanie. Spooker scratched his head and thought for a moment before responding.
"Oh, right! Because Ghost and Toast had to go deal with a french ghost and they sent us to handle this!"
"I think the Achachallas are handling it okay."
"Not that. Ghost said their was a ghost here!"
"Oh. Okay, I'll scan around for anything strange!" Colon said, whipping out the scanner. It started going haywire immediately. "Oops, forgot it doesn't work in this house. Hey, I'm kinda hungry."
"Me too," Spooker said. His face lit up. "Why don't we have a snack first? I'm sure Achachalla won't mind us taking his food!" Before Colon could say anything Spooker dashed into the kitchen and was rummaging through the fridge. He proudly produced a bowl of spaghetti. "Here we go! I'll just pop it in the microwave! How long?"
"Hmm. I usually put it in for five minutes. I like it extra nuclear," Colon said. His stomach growled and he frowned. "Hurry up."
"Okay, timer is set!" Spooker exclaimed. He hit start.
The microwave started shaking and glowing. It hummed and growled, sounding like a wild animal. Or maybe Sally when she didn't get her waffles. Either way it scared the unpaid interns. Fred and Colon backed away from the device. It started shooting sparks and the spaghetti caught on fire. The glowing got more and more intense, until BLAM! Dimensional energy exploded out of it! The blast was felt all over Little Butts. Everyone/thing stopped whatever they were doing. The microwave shot off one final spark before going back to normal. The little door popped open to reveal a very burnt, very melted, slightly alive bowl of spaghetti.
"Uh...I don't think we were supposed to do that," Spooker said, trembling. Colon nodded before passing out. "Good idea," Spooker whispered. He passed out too.
Back in the other dimension, everyone had finally arrived. They were all waiting backstage after being prepped to go on. A strange wind blew through the area, smelling faintly of...spaghetti? Everyone sniffed the air. "Anyone else smell that?" Mark questioned. Everyone nodded. Then a small light, about the size of a golf ball, appeared behind them. Jack turned around and did a double take.
"What on earth is that?!" he shouted, leaping away from it. Everybody turned around and did the same. The light got bigger. A swirl of red, yellow, and blue appeared in the middle. It got bigger and bigger until it was big enough for a person to fit in. The whole group had been backing away from it the whole time. Now it was pulling them in, like when the Millennium Falcon was being pulled into the Death Star. It's pull got stronger and stronger.
"What the heck is going on!" Phil screamed. He was the first one to be pulled in. "AHHHHHH!!!"
"PHIL!" Dan screamed. He was next to go. "NONONONO!!!"
"I'm losing my grip!" Mark shouted. He had grabbed onto a nearby pole. His fingers slipped off and he got sucked into the vortex. "HELP!"
Jack had his arms wrapped around the railing of the stairs leading to the stage. The pull got stronger until he couldn't hold on anymore. "SOMEONE HELP!" he screeched as he was pulled in. The portal closed immediately. Everyone who hadn't got sucked in stood speechless. They all felt light headed. One by one they collapsed as people rushed in. They were all taken to the hospital, but everyone was wondering the same thing.
Where were Mark, Jack, Dan, and Phil?
Okay, that's chapter one! Sorry it's short, but there's more to come! I'm pretty sure you all know where Mark, Jack, Dan, and Phil are. I'm very excited about this story! Oh, and one more thing. The gang might end up meeting a certain...friend in the future. See you, Fanfares!

(Un)Natural Selection Chapter 11
Enjolras
As I stood in the corner watching girls get their hair and makeup touched up I couldn’t help but wonder what their angles were. For a few like the movie star Teresa their angle was obvious, eternal fame and fortune, but for others like Éponine, it wasn’t as obvious. I stared at Éponine while she talked to Cosette. The two were like day and night. Éponine was in a simple olive gown, possibly the plainest gown that Illeá would see tonight, while Cosette wore a sleeveless sparkly pink gown. Éponine, or at least her maids, had taken to wearing her hair down, while Cosette, and most of the other Selected girls, wore their hair in intricate updos so their faces would be easily seen.
In my efforts to end the Selection as quickly as possibly I chose a group of four girls to go on a group date with. This way, I could see how they all interacted together and in a group setting. While we were all playing some trivial game of croquet that one of the girls had suggested, I was attempting to guide Liberty, who had never played. All of a sudden two of the girls were wrestling each other on the ground in fit of immature anger. Several guards immediately came to separate the two and carry them away so they could prepare to leave. The biggest disappointment wasn’t even the fight, it was the photographer that was present. Instead of the bill concerning the next Draft being on the front page there was the hair pulling and tears that was turning into my Selection.
In two weeks, there were only 24 girls left, and this was on track to being the shortest selection in my family’s history. I needed to be strategic about when I sent girls home and when I chose to have a photographer on dates. I didn’t feel confident in having a photographer on the first date, for the sake of the girls, but the public would be demanding pictures sooner than later. I supposed I could see Cosette again at some point this week, maybe host lunch in the garden. I’m sure Éponine would be pleased to hear that I’d be blocking some time off for a meal since she had deemed herself as my “accountability buddy,” since she had come to the conclusion that I lacked self preservation skills. I smiled and decided to come out of my place in the corner to approach Éponine and Cosette.
“Are the two of you nervous for your first Report?” I asked as they curtseyed.
“How nervous should we be?” Cosette giggled.
“Nervous enough so that you’re mindful of your actions, but not nervous enough so that you become physically ill,” I said, thinking about the girl that had gotten sick an hour ago from all of the pressure.
“How are you feeling, Lady Éponine?”
“A grilled chicken salad with a cup of fruit and a cup of tomato soup,” she said, prideful as she gave me her lunch report.
“Salmon and asparagus.” I said curtly as her smile widened.
“Not too bad. I think I’m catching the nerves from all the other girls, I mean we’re just sitting and answering a few questions. Kyran won’t even have time to talk to all of us and I’m sitting furthest away from him,” she noted, pointing to a chair on the fourth row.
“I suppose that’s good news. Well, good luck in advance ladies,” I said, walking towards another group of girls that I had yet to acquaint myself with.
We made small talk about the weather and about what they had been doing to keep themselves busy. They suggested that we try another attempt at a group date and decorate some sugar cookies. I could tell that they were becoming desperate for my attention and feared that the longer they went without a date meant the closer they got to elimination. However, I felt that each girl deserved a fighting chance. Besides, I had to spend the rest of life with one of these girls and it would be stupid to rush through the whole thing. We had settled on Sunday evening when Claudia came to usher all of the girls to their prospective seats. I settled in my seat behind the podium next to my mother.
“How have things been going Julien?” She leaned in, watching the producers arrange the girl’s dresses.
“Things have been productive. I’ve seen ten girls and I’m seeing four more Sunday evening,” I said, while a makeup artist came over.
“Another group date, dear? After the last one I would have thought-”
She would have thought I’d narrow it down to The Elite out of a furious rage. Combeferre might have referred to me as a hothead at times, but I always tried to remain logical.
“These girls are under an extensive amount of stress that I’m sure you remember,” I edged as she clicked her tongue.
“Yes well,” she paused until the makeup artist was finished, “the future Queen of Illeá should not let the extensive stress of the Selection get to her. When you know she’s the one, she’ll know, they all will. You’ll begin to treat her differently without even realizing it,” she said in a state of reminiscence.
“Thank you Mother. I’m sure they would all look forward to hearing some advice from you.”
“I gave them their advice, but at this point, there really isn’t anything else I could say that would make this any better for them,” she breathed, sitting up as she saw my father enter the room.
A few minutes later the cameras started rolling and the anthem of Illeá began to play in the background. The backs of every single girl automatically straightened and their face lit up with smiles, even Éponine, who appeared to be shaking.
“People of Illeá, the palace has been bustling with more than the usual excitement surrounding the Selection. Tonight, we’re going to meet the lovely ladies of this Selection and hear how things are coming with Prince Julien. Speaking of our beloved Prince, how are you doing Your Highness?”
Typically, every eye in the room was on me as I waited to give my response. Tonight’s theme was light and pleasant. Keep down the mentions of the rebellious outbursts in several of the provinces to a minimum. The Selection had to serve as a beacon of hope and distraction from all of the poverty.
“I’m doing fantastic, Kyran. How are you this evening?” I asked, crossing my legs to appear at ease.
“I’m wonderful, Your Highness, thank you for asking. So are we in the presence of twenty-six possible Princesses tonight?”
Light and pleasant.
“Well for the most part every one of these girls possesses the same poise and grace as my lovely mother.”
“Only most of them?”
The girls immediately began to whisper among themselves. I hoped Éponine had a good enough sense of humor to let me get away with this without facing too many repercussions.
“The first time I met this girl she had such difficulty walking in her shoes that she fell right in front of me. Since then I’ve made her promise that she won’t wear high heels until she can walk in them,” I laughed.
“So she’s still with us?” Kyran smiled, eyeing the girls.
“Yes, of course. I couldn’t send her away because of a genuine mistake, and I’m very glad I made that decision,” I said, thinking about Éponine’s participation in the meetings.
“Well Illeá, tonight we will be having a fashion show to find this mystery girl of Prince Julien. So first up, feel free to show us our fancy footwear Miss Musichetta Simon of Angles!”
Several of the girls hiked their bold dresses up past their knees in an attempt to be seductive. Other girls waited until they had already kissed Kyran on the cheek to build suspension in the audience before they revealed that they weren’t the mystery girl. Throughout the interview Kyran asked about any dates the girls might have gone on and how they went. Girls that hadn’t been on a date with me talked about how they were spending their free time and what their favorite part of the palace was.
“Now please welcome Miss Éponine Jondrette of Allens!”
Everyone applauded as Éponine made her way down the stairs and I could only notice how straight she was standing. I could only hope that she had enough time to organize her thoughts on how she would present herself. I didn’t know how the rest of the girls viewed her and I could only hope that I didn’t create twenty-five enemies for her. When she reached Kyran he had to bend his knees so that she could kiss his cheek. After several seconds, Éponine stuck a single foot out from under her dress so she could reveal a simple grey flat.
“It appears that we’ve found our mystery girl!” Kyran exclaimed as they sat down.
“Guilty as charged,” she laughed, holding her hands up.
“You must tell us the full story,” Kyran laughed.
“Well it was our first night in the palace and my maids had picked out the most beautiful shoes that I’ve ever seen. But I’ve never worn high heels before and when we were walking to the Great Room my heel broke.”
“No,” Kyran gasped.
“Yes,” Éponine insisted,” I had fallen behind the rest of the girls and I panicked because I didn’t want to get in trouble for loitering. So I started running towards the girls and I literally ran into Prince Enjolras,” she said, making eye contact with me.
“What happened,” Kyran asked on the edge of his seat.
“Of course I started to apologize profusely, he helped me up, and I asked him if it would be unladylike to run back towards the girls,” she said in a light voice.
“What happened next?”
“Why don’t you ask Prince Enjolras for his side of the story?” She said, calling me out.
I knew he wouldn’t let me off that easily like any of the other girls would have. In just two meetings I learned that Éponine was strong willed and fiercely loyal to beliefs concerning the impoverished.
“Of course, it really was mostly my fault. I was leaving the Men’s Room and thought I had narrowly avoided an early meeting with all of the girls. I was distracted watching the group and I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings. I helped Éponine to her feet, apologized, and told her that it was a capital offense to run barefoot through the palace.”
That line got a laugh out of the girls. During the rest of her interview, Éponine answered questions about our two “dates” since she was the only girl that had seen me twice. She played it off as if lying was second nature to her, saying that she believed the only reason I had seen her twice was because we were watching a series of highly addictive movies. I made sure to make a mental note to visit her after dinner to apologize and congratulate her.

Yukon Gold, Part 2: An Involuntary Dismount From the Canoe
Good morning from Fort Selkirk!
Tumblr media
With bellies full of hearty chilli and a sky full of smoke, JJ and Falcon Heavy were ready to hit the river for our fourth day of canoeing down the Yukon River.
We were only five minutes past Fort Selkirk when JJ realized we forgot a radio and both cans of bear spray. We couldn’t just turn around and paddle upstream, so we had to land so Brian could run up the beach and grab everything (which was left on the above picnic table). After that, we were well on our way to an 80km day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We spotted a black bear munching berries on an island.
Tumblr media
We weren’t the only group on the river making a pilgrimage to Dawson City for the music festival. We’d play leapfrog with the same groups so often we came up with nicknames:
Spanish Armada: the group of nine Spaniards that made giant Spanish omelettes for breakfast and tied two canoes together because they had an odd number of people.
Walmart: the family that travelled with camping chairs, big tarps, and coolers. JJ disliked Walmart. JJ thought Walmart was American. Those are two separate sentences. Walmart was actually from Whitehorse.
Gold Diggers: a husband and wife that would set up on islands and pan for gold. Or so it seemed.
Reckless Youth: a handful of twenty-somethings from UBC with an aversion to life jackets.
Father & Son: they had little to say, to us or each other.
Frenchies: two French guys. That’s it.
Christmas Trees: a red and green boat of women having a jolly old time.
We learned the Spanish Armada planned to camp at the site we were aiming for that night. We could have joined them, but I, for one, did not travel all that way to the middle of nowhere to make new friends. So we had to find somewhere else. We came across another good campsite early in the day, but the weather was beautiful and we wanted to get more kilometers in, so we kept pushing. This moment would be remembered as the time we “got greedy”.
Storm clouds blew in fast. When thunder started booming, Brian told us all to get off the river. So we did. And we waited. Then the rain started. And we waited some more.
Tumblr media
Brian (very reasonably) didn’t want to get back on the water until thirty minutes after the last thunder, but the thunder wouldn’t let up. Things were looking grim. Then we remembered we had snacks. We survived on gummy bears, chips, tea, toasted pita and hummus, and craft hot chocolate from Portland, for the two and a half hours it took for the storm to pass.
Tumblr media
Spirits wavered but never failed.
By the time the storm passed, we still had another ten kilometers to paddle before we reached our goal of Brittania creek, and we found ourselves in the curious position of chasing the storm we had just weathered. When we finally arrived, the site was full of bugs, but at least there weren’t any new friends buzzing around.
Tumblr media
For dinner I made a bastardized version of Pad Thai, using the canoe as a table while being swarmed by mosquitoes. I quickly realized why this particular packet of curry paste was left untouched in our cupboard for years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By this point JJ had given up on the trappings of individuality and had matured into a fully realized single entity. So when JJ cast a line and caught their first decently sized fish at 11.36 pm, the three of us celebrated the incredible testament to JJ’s speed, momentum, and finesse. Considering all the rain we endured, we figured it was safe to build a small beach fire to cook the fish.
Tumblr media
We all came to regret this decision, as the fish remains and fish-smoked clothes had to be dealt with before we could finally go to bed, in order to minimize bear attraction. However, since I cooked that night, I was able to dodge clean up. I went to bed without a care in the world.
Tumblr media
Day five dawned sunny and misty. We knew this would also be a big day, but for a very different reason. This was the day we’d reach the bakery. Yes, somehow there was a bakery in the middle of nowhere on the Yukon River.
Tumblr media
Power strokes would get us there quicker.
Tumblr media
Of course we had to stop whenever we came across moose trampling through the bushes, beavers smacking their tails, and bears ambling down the beach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bakery turned out to be less of a bakery and more of a family home that sold $18 omelettes and saran-wrapped cookies (we bought them all). We payed $8 each to stay the night. Camping in someone else’s backyard to listen to their kids blast music and play in their pool felt strange after the solitude of the river, but we knew the daily thunderstorm would hit us soon and the last thing we needed was to “get greedy” again. So we settled in, washed up, and tackled laundry.
Tumblr media
JJ waiting out the 6 o’clock thundershowers.
Tumblr media
Of course, no camping trip with JJ (formerly Rob) would be complete without curry. JJ made us a heaping pot, just in time for more rain showers.
The next day we found ourselves fresh out of fresh ingredients, so we climbed aboard the COUS COUS train and headed for dehydration station.
Tumblr media
Rafting up for snacks and map checks.
Tumblr media
We had lunch at the island right before the White River, which poured all its glacial silt into the Yukon. The two rivers blended like miso soup. JJ made ramen while Brian flew his drone for a better view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After lunch, we found a short but steep trail to hike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the merge we could no longer filter our water from the river, which was so thick we couldn’t even see our own feet when we dipped them in. All the silt brushing against our canoes made a constant fizzing noise, like a never-ending glass of coke being poured.
Tumblr media
Just a couple bros enjoying happy hour with river-chilled beer.
Tumblr media
After the relative business of the “bakery”, we decided to camp on an undesignated island covered in moose tracks. While the views and privacy were top notch, all the silt made for very muddy shores.
Tumblr media
Brian made delicious minestrone soup for dinner, then treated us to freeze-dried ice cream sandos in honour of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
Tumblr media
You can only get dishes so clean in the silty water, but on day six, cleanliness was no longer a priority. Brian had bought a last minute gold pan in Whitehorse, and while it didn’t find us any gold, it did make an excellent vessel for washing dishes and laundry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sky was still light at 1 am, because the sky was always light. We went to bed when it was light. We woke up when it was light. Time had no meaning on the river. It created (for me, at least) a sense of security. Openness. Like the Yukon had nothing to hide. But the truth was, we were in the middle of nowhere, hundreds of kilometers from the nearest town, on a muddy river where every island was covered with bear, wolf, and moose tracks.
We woke to the sound of splashing outside our tent. I immediately thought the moose had come to do us in, but instead of moose on the loose, we saw a gaggle of goose.
Tumblr media
These banks were home to countless cliff swallows that zipped along the river, eating bugs. Yum.
Tumblr media
“JJ first.”
Tumblr media
There’s gold in them there hills. But not really.
Our last night on the river was spent at the Mechem Creek site. We set up camp as Brian howled in the cold cold creek, washing off the heat of the day.
Tumblr media
Fire bans don’t count on the last day of the trip. Not if it’s been raining every day and you’re careful. JJ struggled to get the fire going (which Brian and I found slightly concerning, considering how dry the sticks were), but all’s well that ends well.
Tumblr media
I made a pesto surprise COUS COUS dinner with brownie bear poo for dessert. Everyone saved some sort of fun surprise for their last meal.
“Very good food on this trip. Every meal has been at least a solid 7.5 out of 10.” - JJ
Tumblr media
The site at Mechem creek turned out to be my favourite camp site, not least because we saved a bag of wine for that night.
Tumblr media
We woke up at 6am up to a brilliant, clear sky.
Tumblr media
JJ treated us to one last meal on the river.
Tumblr media
There’s nothing better than a well packed canoe!
Tumblr media
River travel is tiring work.
We rafted up for one last ceremonial flip of the map, which brought us to our final page. Spirits were high. Jokes were shared. We were finally on the home stretch of our 8 day, 400 km paddle through the Yukon wilderness.
Tumblr media
Minutes away from Dawson City, disaster struck.
Brian wanted to stop for a drone shot of Dawson before we paddled in, so we radioed JJ to let them know to land at the tip of the next island. Unable to reach the point in time, JJ decided to land mid island, where the strong current had eroded the bank, causing several trees to topple. It was a bad place to land, and they came in hot hot hot.
Official statement from JJ:
“JJ experienced an involuntary dismount resulting in minor losses from the deck and a minor intake of water. However, the landing was successful.”
JJ thought the word “capsize” was too passionate for the encounter, but Falcon Heavy disagreed. When JJ’s canoe met land, the current hit from underneath, tipping the canoe and its contents upstream. Brian turned to me and said “They capsized. They did exactly what I told them not to do.” No one was injured, although Jordan’s solar panel and Rob’s hat and beloved binoculars were lost to the water. Falcon Heavy found a safe eddy to pull in, then Brian brought out the drone while we waited for JJ to get their shit together.
Tumblr media
The paddle of shame.
Tumblr media
We had just got back in the water when we heard the unmistakable rumble of thunder. We were faced with a dilemma: get off the water, like all Brian’s experience suggested we do, or “get greedy” and paddle hard to race the storm.
We paddled hard...
Tumblr media
... but not so hard we didn’t have time to admire the first and only fox we saw on the river.
Tumblr media
That’s Dawson City at the top.
Tumblr media
This time our gamble paid off, and we made it to the docks with nae drama (except for the paddleboat that honked at us to get out of its spot).
Tumblr media
Safe and sound in Dawson City, it was time to look back at our favourite and not so favourite moments of the canoe trip.
JJ (Jordan)
Highlight: Fort Selkirk. Just the whole fort. So cool.
Lowlight: Involuntary canoe dismount and loss of solar panel.
Gold Star: Gold Pan/Brian Shaw for getting the gold pan.
JJ (Rob)
Highlight: The River (as a tangible entity and metaphysical being) The colours, the current, the curves...the feeling.
Lowlight: Involuntary canoe dismount and loss of binoculars.
Gold Star: JJ. The physical embodiment of speed, momentum and finesse.*
*In all my years of highlight/ lowlight/ gold star, I have never seen someone award the gold star to themselves.
Brian
Highlight: All the Yukon cabins. The history of the Yukon Crossing, the trees growing out of Thom’s Location cabin roof, the historically intact cabins of Fort Selkirk (inside and out), and all the private cabins we saw in between.
Lowlight: Cleaning up the fish & fire at Britannia Creek between midnight and 1am, exhausted from the long day, swarmed by bugs, still stinking of fish, right into the tent.
Gold Star: Jordan, for making the trip (and JJ) happen by stepping in at the last minute and filling the spot, prepared and enthusiastic, and a strong paddler.
Lianne
Highlight: The beautiful site and tasty food at Mechem Creek. Also the fact that none of the canoeists that stopped by the creek for water decided to stay the night, because sharing the site would have really killed the vibe.
Lowlight: Spending hours waiting out the day four thunderstorm under a tarp.
Gold Star: The map. Following along and “staying found”, as Brian would say, was easy and delightful.
Bonus Gold Star: Brian Shaw. The unofficial leader of our canoe trip, Brian looked after us all with his experience, well-muscled arms, moon landing trivia, sexy beard, and positive attitude.
Tumblr media
As always, most of the good pics were taken by Brian. He put together an album of the 2019 Yukon River greatest hits:

Stay tuned for the third and final part of Yukon Gold. Dawson City will bring a music festival, rowdy casino, epic hike, and a real life Yukon character known as “the Ghost”.
