âBones and Ivory: Mammoth bones and ivory were valuable resources for early humans. Bones were used for crafting tools, such as needles, awls, and harpoons. The ivory tusks, which could reach several meters in length, were especially prized for their durability and suitability for carving into various objects, including weapons, jewelry, and art. Mammoth bones and tusks were also used as construction materials by early humans. Mammoth bones and tusks also served as fuel sources. They were burned as a source of heat and light, particularly in regions where wood was scarce.â

Image by Nandaro CC by 3.0 âArchaeologists have recently uncovered the remains of a 40-foot wide, circular hut made entirely of mammoth bones. That includes tusks, skulls, and bones of over 60 woolly mammoths in Russia. The structure appears to be about 25,000 years old. Now theyâre wondering what the structure could have been used for.â - Source:Â https://www.thevintagenews.com/2020/03/23/mammoth-bones-structure/

Good morning, happy Thursday, who wants to read a fun idea I had about giants in Soul Society?
So! I was reading this @littleeyesofpallas post about wuxing symbolism and was particularly struck by this passage in a section about the gate guardians:
There is no central guard but conspicuously Kirinji's name comes from Qilin, but apparently according to official height he's actually not nearly as tall as Kubo's drawings always made him seem. Not that he was on the same scale as the gate guardians even then...
No, I said to myself, of course not. He's powerful enough to control his size, because I was thinking of the part where Grand Fisher claims Isshin is too small to defeat him and Isshin responds with a lecture on soul reaper lore:
Now, bodies are not swords, but maybe the same mechanic applies! It certainly applies to Hollows. Earlier in this same scene, Kon mistakes Grand Fisher for a Menos Grande, and Grand Fisher is insulted by the comparison, but it's the same thing. Menos are huge and scary, but when they become Arrancar, they shrink down and become scarier. [Aside: I think this is why the Yammy-is-secretly-Espada-0 reveal doesn't quite manage to hit. It goes against the lore Kubo has been laying down for ages]
On a meta level, this is just a shounen storytelling tactic where X is an indicator of strength, but then later on, it's like "Reverse Uno! Not-X is the real indicator of strength!!" That's exactly how this zanpakutou-size thing is used when it's first introduced.
Exhibit A: Renji, a court jester, being impressed by the size of Ichigo's sword:
Exhibit B: A handful of issues later, Urahara, an intellectual (lol), sets us straight:
Genre convention or not, I think it lends itself some interesting world-building. Among low-powered people, size is impressive, but as you scale the ranks of power, it's kind of pathetic. Weirdly large people are like the petty bourgeoisie of Soul Society power dynamics.
But that's actually the perfect niche for a gatekeeper! In general, your typical Joe Shinigami is going to be able to take on just about any rando from the Rukongai, but maybe not a particularly strong ryouka. Ganju was able to take on Yumichika, after all. A single shinigami wouldn't be able to take on a planned rebellion, like in the Bount arc, and they've got to, like, sleep and stuff. The Gotei could, in theory, have an entire gatehouse and a gate patrol, etc, but that they are perpetually short-staffed as-is. Instead, how about one medium-powerful gatekeeper whose size makes them well-suited for fighting groups of people (or siege weapons), and who is going to be intimidating overall?
Furthermore, it's implied that Jidanbou isn't actually a shinigami. He wears a shihakushou, but his axes don't seem to be a zanpakutou (he doesn't release them and is distressed when they are destroyed). His neighbors offer this comment on him:
It's not quite right, though: after all, many shinigami are from Rukongai, including Gin, who is the reason Jidanbou is being healed at the very moment this panel takes place. I think what this guy means is that Jidanbou is of Rukongai, which is to say not of the Seireitei.
So what is he, then? Here's my big idea: I think that the gigantism in Soul Society might actually be a reiatsu-developmental disability! It's always been my impression that growth, especially for powerful people, happens in fits and spurts, rather than linearly, and that furthermore, big changes in growth tend to coincide with developments in reiryouku. Somewhere, either in childhood or adolescence, someone's spiritual pressure grows more quickly than their control over it, which results in their body growing uncontrollably. They become very powerful "physically", but their strength is all in their mass/reishi, which takes most of their spiritual pressure to control. This may end up limiting the upper end of power they are able to achieve and some cases means they get cut off entirely from the other forms of power used by shinigami (connecting to a zanpakutou, kidou). I think this might be especially common in children from the Rukongai, who lack access to education and training. I can also imagine it leading itself to cautionary tales in the outer Rukon that if you feed your hungry children too much, you'll end up with a giant on your hands.
This offers one explanation to why Jidanbou is a giant and his brother Jiroubou is large, but not remotely on the same scale (the Souls Data Book lists his height at 7'7" vs Jidanbou's 32'5"). There are a handful of other shinigami of larger-than-human height, which could be a milder form of this, or it could mean that some sort of special training or medical intervention helped keep their growth manageable. I think you can squeeze in a lot of interesting character insights into this headcanon, from Hachi (8'5"), who perhaps worked exceptionally hard in an effort to control his power and ended becoming incredibly skilled at kidou as a result (interesting that he, too, is not actually a shinigami). Or Oomaeda (6'11"), who gets by a lot on his family's wealth and clout, but is definitely on the weaker end of the lieutenant power scale. In his case, his large size kind of speaks to his entire "thinks he's classy, but is really just gaudy"/can't-even-tell-how-outclassed-he-is-by-his-peers deal.
Then, as a counterpoint, you've got Hitsugaya: immensely powerful from a young age, and one of the hallmarks of his character is how in-control of himself he is, down to having developed an actual visible power bar for his bankai. Whether this is some effect of his personality, or whether it's an intervention on Hyourinmaru's part, his growth has been choked off as a side effect. He's the direct opposite of Jidanbou, who additionally seems somewhat childlike in personality (crying over his axes, for example, or his attachment to his extremely dubious "rules of the city"). To me, it's very sweet that their friendship might have roots in opposite expressions of the same reiatsu-growth-fuckup.
Much in the way that the Shiba use some sort of magic that's distinctly different from shinigami-kidou, I guess I really like thinking about other ways power might manifest itself in Soul Society outside of the shinigami-industrial-complex. And also the way the Seireitei may or may not try to control those powers."Guard this gate!" they say. "We won't actually let you live in the city or give you city wages, but you can have a cool outfit and, uh...do it for the exposure?"
#soul society worldbuilding#gate guardians#jidanbou ikkanzaka#soul society inventing new forms of ableism that are only accessible at the highest level of power. incredibly on-brand for them#toshiro hitsugaya#hachigen ushoda#marechiyo omaeda#this may or may not be relevant to zaraki (6'8") but that guy is in his own category#werewolves are also their own thing but i wonder if their size firmly predisposes them towards the 'melee' side of things#not sure we ever saw komamura do a kidou and his hex chart rating was p low#ngl even tho it's a little silly later on i LOVE it when the characters in early bleach have no idea how the worldbuilding even works#rukia-doesn't-know-what-a-quincy-is i am looking at you#like it's not graceful or anything but learning how the world works is a thing that goes along with character and power growth#it underscores how 'young' characters like rukia and renji are even though they are old by human standards#and also how soul society is not. uh. committed to the ideals of the free spread of knowledge and education#i just think it's neat! my favorite lil dystopian afterlife!!#the reason i read that wuxing post is bc i woke up this morning and missed troius and went to go scroll thru his blog and it was there#troius i miss youuuuuuuuuuuuuu i hope you're having a great day

man if i had an actual plot structure to use as scaffolding (because i canât really do slice of life or things like it) i could write so many N and Uzi words that are just the actual practicalities and obstacles (varying in size and some seen, some unforeseen) of an interspecies relationship
#banana.txt#murder drones#esp for the no solver stuff i tend to work with on my way early pilot era fics#like the diet is an obvious one but thereâs also other physical needs. behavior. mindset. culture (esp since copper drones actually have-#-the opportunity to develop a culture outside of the oppressive influence of human societyâs treatment of them as a whole)#communication in general which can fall under body language but also plain just. DD vocalization an an range outside of WD auditory-#-processor range. and just senses in general#ITS A LOT TO PONDER#for gods sake DDs think movement wise in three dimensions naturally#as opposed to WDs (and humans) as terrestrial entities spatial map/field of movement being laterally compressed

#It's how it should have been actually...#when I started watching Bleach I never thought those other pesky humans would become protagonists#i thought Inoue was going to die on the episode with her brother#I thought Chad was going to be some type of comical relief#I thought Uryu was going to be Team Rocket for Ichigo and Co.#I thought it was going to be mainly Ichigo and Rukia Go On Terrifying Adventures#I thought Byakuya after the Turnabout and Redemption Arc of Soul Society Arc would become like their mentor/guy who always comes through..#...to help the two idiots getting into all sorts of shenanigans#I thought Renji would be the accidental travel buddy who tries to balance his devotion to Rukia and his obedience to Byakuya#I honestly couldn't care less about the World of the Living after I'd seen Soul Society#I wanted it to be a kind of volunteer Isekai in which Ichigo decides early on to stay in Soul Society#bleach#byakuya kuchiki#ichigo kurosaki#rukia kuchiki#renji abarai

Jujutsu Kaisen asks many important questions such as: mentally healthy daughters that are happy but racist OR son that isnât racist but is so mentally unwell he rarely smiles and has no will to live
#thereâs something really funny about Geto conceptually having raised the kids in his care better than Gojo#for a bunch of reasons#like I get there are other factors#but the only drawback to being with Geto was apparently the racism#meanwhile Megumi and Tsumiki got whatever youâd call their lot#comedic fr#the Habaras seem to like Geto too meanwhile you already know Gojo hates that Megumi doesnât like acknowledging him#his own fault for being annoying but like. thatâs hilarious#Geto didn't even make the girls racist im pretty sure they're fine with human things so that's hardly a downside.#also funny in jjk is that the jujutsu society is corrupt and wants them dead but Gojo is the one who stays and follows the rules#while Geto is the one who left. but instead of it being for a good moral reason like youâd expect from early flashbacks#itâs because heâs decided to start killing humans#he couldâve just stuck to that first village but nah has to kill all the humans now#âsounds like a better plan than anyâ says man who hasnât slept in 3 days#Gojo stayed behind but also refused to do anything about criminal Geto indefinitely which is extra funny#why are they like that#jjk

Thinking about how Mr. Gaines suggested using the Whisperer to force information out of the captured Executives and then was annoyed when Mr. Benedict shut him down
#Hello????#They are not war criminals!!!#They did some stuff but are also only maybe barely in their early twenties and have been brainwashed????#Maybe be nice to them????#Or at least humanely decent#His main argument was to use it on the Ten Men and I know he's bad for other reasons too but this bit got me really upset#the mysterious benedict society#mbs#the prisoner's dilemma#tpd

nobody:
me, disabled, and with special interests in both worldbuilding and disability accommodations, history, and advocacy: i wonder what kind of disabilities existed on gallifrey. would regeneration reset an autoimmune disorder, or would it follow through to their next form? can they regenerate into a body with an autoimmune disorder? is it there to stay once it hits?
what about limb differences? if gallifreyans can regenerate limbs (at the very least within the first 15 hours of regeneration, as seen in the christmas invasion), would that mean the majority of limb differences on gallifrey would be congenital? would a gallifreyan be encouraged to regenerate regardless of threat to their life after an amputation, or has gallifrey moved past that sort of ableism? (probably not, since fifteen's tardis being wheelchair accessible (or, the entrance, since the ramps within seem pretty steep) is considered remarkable by wheelchair user and unit agent shirley anne bingham. plus, from a doylist perspective, dw is very much a product of its various times, being a universe that started development in the early 60s.) would regeneration ""fix"" (heavy airquotes on that) such limb differences? is it possible to regenerate into a body with a limb difference? what sort of adaptive devices are/were there on gallifrey for those who either can't regenerate because they're very close to or at their regeneration limit, or simply choose not to do so?
a lot of these questions also apply to neurological disorders and injuries, too, if you change the wording a bit. tremors, chronic pain, weakness, paralysis, mobility issues, those sorts of things.
and are their blind gallifreyans? (if so, the doctor clearly didn't spend enough time around them.) deaf/hoh gallifreyans? similar questions there, too! (written gallifreyan language already makes my head spin, personally, but i'm intrigued by the idea of how they might go about designing an equivalent of braille! and i'd bet money that gallifreyan sign would include words and phrases that humans wouldn't think to consider, just like any other language. but then, why doesn't the tardis's translation matrix recognize and automatically translate british sign language, as we see with cass's signing confusing clara in before the flood?)
further, what about potential disabilities with no human analogue that relate to the regeneration process itself-?
my parents: hang on. slow down. what the fuck are you talking about
#there's a reason i consider various forms of disability in the early stages of worldbuilding. and that reason is that i find these sorts of#questions and their answers absolutely fucking FASCINATING to consider#not only from a worldbuilding perspective but also as a means of taking proper representation of real life disabled humans into account#like. i'm prone to reading fictional alien civilizations as being reflections of our own in various ways so it's my belief that any doylist#ableism could be explained watsonionly (? not sure how to conjugate that) via ableism in gallifreyan society. but that leaves us with a lot#to consider from a meta standpoint#especially with the ramifications of gallifrey seemingly ignoring disability on the whole easily being read as eugenics#and the fact that time lords are considered by and large to be so Superior to humans in nearly every fucking way but not recognizing bsl as#a language in its own right or making tardises accessible to wheelchairs by default#idk. i'm rambling. anyway#shut up emrys

dandelion: bisexual roll call, letâs go
dandelion (answering his own prompt, muttering and checking a piece of paper with charcoal): *present and accounted forâŠ*
cahir: you can count me, as well
geralt: what is this
dandelion: iâm taking inventory of how many of us are bisexual
geralt: why
dandelion: just curious
geralt: alright. present.
dandelion: thank youuu. regis?
regis (uncharacteristically grave): i do not define myself by these terms. and, to be honest, itâs really a very interesting and complicated topic requiring discussionâ
dandelion: âohhhkay. milva?
milva: no.
dandelion: uhh⊠do you mean⊠no to
milva: [gets up and leaves]
#incorrect witcher quotes#please do not take this seriously i know im posting this on the taking sexuality too seriously website but#i am trying to be less strict with myself and allow myself to shitpost lmao so count this as meeting my shitpost quota#this is actually funny because i wrote this thinking about angoulĂȘme and as i was writing it this became situated in early september#right after they crossed the yaruga#so she wasnt with them yet. however i initially was making this post thinking how i could represent her bisexuality in fics about her#the context here also is that milva is an ace lesbian but more significantly she doesnt have patience for dandelionâs bullshit#also dandelion has no ulterior motive here just to clarify. initially geralt did the poll but the dialogue became too chatty for him#and also i was thinking about regisâ stupid complex relationship with human society and gender and how alcoholism killed him so he had to#rebuild his entire life and rediscover who he was because he forcibly drowned himself to forget that person#f: a hansaâs a hansa#txt

I don't have the authority or the seniority or any other -ority to vocally reproach people, and even if I did I'm not about that life, but I'm in the uncomfortable position of "I can't do some of My Shit if people don't do theirs first", and doing the others things slooowly only works so far. And oftentimes I'm sitting at my desk feeling like there's a guillotine hanging over me because I don't wanna get caught "slacking" and get in trouble. But I don't want to get other people in trouble either. Whack :|
#i cannot stress this enough i don't want to be Busy#the main problem is that time passes SUUUUPER slowly too when you have very little to do and since i don't really have the opportunity to#idk. fuck around on my phone if i finish early. i'm often left feeling with the desire to bash my head on my desk#why can't i fuck off early if i finished everything and there's nothing left for me to do. make it make sense. we live in a society#mytext#all this to say. it's 06:38 i woke up early as usual so that i could eat breakfast like any other issues-free human being#and i don'tttttttt want to go to work and i'm aware that i sound like an ass rn because. objectively. it's not a Problem considering what#some people go through etc i know i Know but. i still don't want to go arrrrrrgggghhhhh

i want to make some old guard vampires with their own little faction but i a) don't want to put any more Vampire Politics in nny i feel like theyre already overrepresented and b) don't want to displace them as far north as new england because im conceptualizing these people as all being southerners and while linas in nny and is from ky/tn shes a new age-ish vamp even if she is one of the oldest of that generation idt any of the post-20th century vampires had any kind of sway with the oldheads when lina moved north and certainly not enough to make a group of them uproot like that. so i guess they could be an excuse for me to start picking at another area outside of ny/nj and figuring out how the dissolution of current society shaped that part of the world...
#when i say old guard here im thinking 1800s probably?#i think that part of the reason there are pretty few especially old long lived/immortalish undead monsters in setting present outside of#massively increased reaper presence and policing. at least with the ones who prefer to exist within society proper#is that when youve already been hundreds of years removed from being a Normal Person/Human it becomes difficult to change your ways#enough to adjust to the way the world changed during the apocalypse#so thats a timeframe where theyd be old enough during the early-mid 21st century to both have enough power and longevity to be part of#that old proper vampire society and young enough to roll with the punches#and also just in general i think being around for long enough has a tendency to do bad things to your brain.#also ky is further north than these peopled be shes just the vampire atp with the closest point of origin to these dudes#personal

i cant believe there are ppl who genuinely think that diversity is a detriment
#*deep space noises*#the joy in being the same but different#the advantages of a well rounded society as well#someone whois fearless gets things done quickly#someone who is anxious tjinks abt the consequences#and both can cooperate for a more balanced solution#or night owls and early birds#i just. like thinkin abt why are brains might do things#i find it comforting to think abt what anxiety or depression is mechanically#like the theory that depression is the way of ur system asking or forcing u to slow down and convalesce#studies of the brain are v weird like that in this culture where it seems almost taboo??#maybe because we just understand so little abt the human brain and so its hard back things up#and it can be so easily used as an avenue to uphold racist or sexist or ableist ideas#(tho this can and does happen in any area of study abt humans)#idk what field of study this is#a vague one i imagine since we can only theorise#depending on what it is

i worked in a school till last week and i can confidently tell you that we're already there.
half the fifth grade class was sent on to middle school not being able to read at all. the other half wasnt even 1/2 the required level. They dont even know how to write their own name. what their birthday is.
#my state is a 'no child left behind' state which sounds great on paper#but in reality it means that kids never learn anything.#they just get moved on to the next grade which has even higher standards and requirements and complexity#and theyre still on kindergarten level#5th grade teachers are having to teach early education (1st grade) level academics.#high school teachers are having to teach elementary level concepts.#we are already there.#humans will absolutely be going extinct and/or our societies will be failing in the next century#the only ones who will survive will be isolated island communities and those in underdeveloped nations.#and by that point they wont have much time left before the earth becomes uninhabitable
