Speaking of face products, here are some I can't live without; Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing pads, African Black Soap, GNC Vitamin E, A & D moisturizer, and Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting cream. The Nip+ Fab cleansing pads are gentle enough for everyday use but powerful enough to get the job done. I can’t live without these. The moment I start to feel a breakout, I swipe my face with this and it begins to relax within seconds. I suffered from really bad hormonal acne when I turned 20, [as well as] hyper pigmentation. Glycolic serum actually helps break down and lighten acne scars and hyper pigmentation, while not drying out your face, which is why I love it so much! I use African Black Soap directly on my face; it's exfoliating so it helps get rid of my dead skin and leaves my skin with a fresh clean glow every time. Now that I've covered cleansing, let's talk moisture!! My holy grail, super cheap deal is my GNC E, A & D moisturizer. It costs $2 at your local GNC, it is perfect as a light everyday moisturizer. It absorbs into my skin so smoothly and gives a nice glow, so more often than not I skip the makeup! Last but not least, and most importantly, is my Olay Micro-Sculpting cream. It is so important to find a sculpting cream in your early 20's because fighting wrinkles and signs of aging starts now. Every morning when I wake up I apply a thin layer to my face when I wake up. When it is bed time, I use a thicker layer while sleeping to allow my skin ample time for absorption. By the time I wake up, I always feel like I have a brand new face. I highly recommend it. Having a great skin care routine and products is essential to a healthy aging process.

Not only does having a great skin care routine in place slow aging down, but it is essential to a flawless makeup application. My everyday look consists of my vitamin moisturizer as a base, followed by my Sephora liquid foundation or my all time favorite... L.A Girl Pro Coverage foundation. I found it is a dupe to the Makeup Forever HD foundation and it only costs $8, and yes it really works. Lately I love my Fenty Beauty Match Stick in French vanilla as my concealer/ highlight. It blends so well and creamy, I have no complaints! To set my face, I use Airspun translucent powder, it's affordable and smells divine! I use a little shimmer on the eyes and use my go to mascara from Kiko. All of their products are LIT! A little blush on my cheeks goes a long way in waking me up and my go to highlighter pallet is Nude Rose from BH cosmetics. When my face is on, I set it with the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray.

Now let's talk hair. I am Puerto Rican so I have very curly hair that is silky. After years of using dollar store gel, I've found my go to brand. It is Curls Unleashed. I use everything including their sulfate free shampoo, curl jelly and sulfate free curling mousse. These products together give me the best curly puff, I love it. I usually switch between wash-n-go or flexi rods. I'll wash my hair on average every 5 days, to keep my curls in place. If I don't let it air dry, I will always use a diffuser; in my opinion they give the best curls I've ever seen in my life! Also, oil and moisturizer is key for your hair. I use a coconut oil mixture that gives it a tropical smell while acting as heat protectant if I were to straighten or blow dry.

My style is a mixture between relaxed and chic. Since I am a student, I have my everyday looks that include boyfriend jeans, converse and a fitted tee. I really like to keep it simple for school. When I do eyebrows I always wear black, so I find it fun to create chic looks using all black colors. I also work at Gap, so that is where I get most of my clothes from and I love it. Their jeans are bomb.com and they last forever. They have a curvy fit jean that is perfect for us women with a little booty back there! When I'm not working or going to school and have time to dress up, I channel my inner JLO. She is everything. I like to feel like JLO on the red carpet back in the 2000's wearing that deep-v, thigh bearing, iconic dress because who wouldn't want to feel how she looked?! Sexy. Although in Connecticut, it gets very cold so I don't get to dress like sexy JLO often. My favorite season in Connecticut is fall, not only because of my birthday in October, but fall fashion is the best fashion! I think the essentials for fall fashion include; a sleek leather jacket, ankle booties, thigh high boots, a warm vest and LOTS of scarves! Scarves have to be my favorite because I can use them around my hair, to keep my chest warm, or use them as a shawl over my shoulders.

There are a few things to my style that are significant and they are; my glasses, my hair, cross necklace, lipgloss and stylish nails.

Since second grade, I've had vision problems so I have been wearing glasses for quite some time now and my glasses are a part of me. Currently I'm sporting glittery Kate Spade glasses; they give my look a uniqueness that I love. Plus when I'm having a rough day my glasses cover the bags under my eyes! My hair is always changing, right now it's currently burgundy for the fall but I almost always wear it in an Afro. I feel like my hair speaks for itself, loud and proud just like me. I love my hair and thank my parents for blessing me with the curls, I feel like it represents my Puerto Rican culture and gives a little sass. I work at a hair salon called the Beauty Room in Wethersfield and they always keep my hair and curls fresh. I always wear my cross necklace because I keep God close to me at all times and as a reminder that every day and chance I get is a blessing. Next, is my lip gloss and yes it's poppin. Currently OBSESSED with Fenty Beauty gloss bomb but anything iridescent and light goes in my purse right away. I love the gloss look cause it's effortless for a girl on the go like myself, I love mattes but gloss just gives that extra POW when needed. Lastly, my nails represent me. Always being in people’s face,  the first thing they see are my hands and my nails so I always keep them on point. I work at a nail salon in Manchester called Bebe’s Nails, that specialize in slaying. I will never have a bad nail day ever.

Vegan Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, these vegan fried green tomatoes are super easy to whip up and deliciously addictive! Perfect as a snack or side dish!

I visited three different supermarkets this week. And that’s pretty typical, with all the cooking I do, and never knowing who’s going to be out of nutritional yeast and whatnot. But something awesome happened. Guys, I saw Halloween candy! And hay bales! And mums! And cinnamon scented pine cones!

Autumn is really coming. Woo-hoo!

I always thought of fried green tomatoes as an early summer recipe, but it’s actually also a late summer recipe. When things start to cool off, lots of home gardeners find their green tomatoes on the vine and in danger of never actually ripening. So they look for creative ways to cook them up while they’re green!

We’re a bit of a ways away from that happening — I’m just starting to get a regular supply of red tomatoes from my garden. But you can never be too prepared for fall.

If you buy tomatoes for this recipe, make sure you’re actually buying unripe tomatoes, and not heirloom tomatoes that just happen to be green. I almost made this mistake myself, thinking you were supposed to use green heirloom tomatoes for this kind of thing. But nope! The idea behind using unripe tomatoes is that they’re nice and firm, so they fry up nicely. Fully ripe tomatoes are likely to turn to mush.

I’ve made a handful of variations of vegan fried green tomatoes, and done quite a bit of research on traditional (i.e., non-vegan) fried green tomatoes.

There are a bunch of different ways people make these things, some pretty complicated and involving three and four dips in different batters and dry mixtures, and some involving nothing more than eggs and cornmeal. I think I’ve found the perfect happy medium with my vegan version.

First, whip up a batter with some non-dairy milk, flax, flour, and nutritional yeast. The flax will mix with the liquid and form a gel. This is your egg substitute! The flour thickens the mixture up, and the nutritional yeast adds some savory flavor.

If you’d like, season up your batter with some black salt (also called kala namak). This salt has a high sulfur content and will actually make the batter taste eggy.

Dip a tomato slice in the batter, and then dredge it in some seasoned cornmeal.

Heat up a bit of oil in a skillet, add your tomato slice, and fry until crispy and golden.

Tips for Making Perfect Vegan Fried Green Tomatoes

These are best served immediately, but if you have some leftovers, try placing them under the broiler for a few minutes on each side until they crisp back up.

I like the texture of a 100% cornmeal coating, but if you prefer something more delicate, try using a mix of equal parts flour and cornmeal.

Feel free to play around with the seasonings in your cornmeal mixture. Try some garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, Cajun seasoning, or chili powder.

Not sure what to do with your fried green tomatoes? Serve them up with hot sauce, remoulade, your favorite aioli, put them on toast (with this hummus!), over grits, or stuff them into a sandwich (recipe to come!).

Vegan Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients

For the Batter

1/2 cup unflavored and unsweetened soy or almond milk

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons ground flaxseed

1 tablespoon nutritional yeast flakes

1/2 teaspoon kala namak, or regular salt

For the Coating

1/2 cup cornmeal

1/2 teaspoon paprika

Pinch caynne pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Fried Green Tomatoes

2 medium green (unripe) tomatoes, sliced 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick

About 1/4 cup canola oil, or high heat oil of choice

Instructions

Whisk all of the batter ingredients together in a small bowl. Allow it to sit and thicken up for about 10 minutes, while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Stir the coating ingredients together in another small bowl.

Very generously coat the bottom of a medium nonstick (preferably cast iron) skillet with oil (you want it at least 1/8 inch thick deep). Place it over medium heat.

When the oil begins to shimmer, grab a tomato slice and dip both sides in the batter to coat.

Next, dredge both sides of the tomato slice in the cornmeal mixture.

Transfer the tomato slice to the skillet. Repeat for as many slices as you can fit in the skillet without overcrowding them.

Cook the tomato slices for about 4 minutes on each side, until crisp and golden. 

Transfer the cooked slices to a paper towel-lined plate, and repeat the cooking process until all slices are cooked, adding oil to the skillet between batches as needed.

Creme Finish

This is a standard single color polish. It is one of the most commonly used lacquers and gives a smooth, shiny finish.

Satin Nail Polishes

These are nail polishes with a semi-matte finish and a slight shine.

Chrome or Metallic

This finish gives the nails the appearance of being covered with metal. They are tricky to apply and unless done professionally can leave your nail design looking messy and streaky. The most sought after colors are copper, silver, and gold.

Glitter Finish

Glitter is very easy to apply. It usually consists of clear polish, usually a gel, with flakes of gold, silver, or colored foil. The shapes of the flakes vary widely and can be square, round, hexagonal or bar shaped. A small amount of glitter used with other colors can make your nail design pop. It can also be applied on its own for a simple sparkly effect. While it is easy to apply, it is quite difficult to remove.

Matte

Matte finishes are free from any shine and are usually provided as ready mixed matte polishes. However, you can achieve the same result by adding a regular gloss polish and finishing with a matte top coat.

Flake

A flaky finish to your nail design is obtained by adding a clear polish with tiny flecks in it. They usually have a clear jelly base with very fine opal particles added. These catch the light with movement.

Holographic

A more recent and innovative effect is the holographic look. This is similar to using glitter polish but has flakes of rainbow-colored foil added which catch the light with movement. It is easier to remove than glitter polish.

Duochrome

Duochrome is another recent addition to a manicurists arsenal. This is a polish with a special effect that changes from one color to another depending on the light. It usually has two colors, but can sometimes have more, and can even appear to be several different colors all at once.

Iridescent

Like duo chrome, this flashes with different colors due to movement. But the color change in this polish is far more subtle.

Textured

A textured look is achieved using a special polish with tiny particles that give a sugary, crystal-like appearance. It usually has a lot of sparkle in it, and it feels gritty to the touch when it has dried.

Jelly

This should not be confused with gel. Jelly is a transparent polish with a subtle hint of color, providing a light wash on the nail. This gives a very glossy finish to the nail.

Shimmer

Shimmer nail polish has microscopic flakes of glitter in a clear or colored base. The glitter is usually silver. It shimmers with movement, hence the name.

Foil

A foil is very similar to the metallic look but has the appearance of aluminum foil. It often has very fine glitter added to it, giving a smooth and sparkly finish.

Glass Flecked

This one has the appearance of small glass particles mixed in a jelly base. It gives a smooth yet sparkly finish.

Pearl

A pearl finish is achieved by using a sheer white base with the addition of a blue-toned shimmer polish.

Suede

Suede is an extra shimmery polish, but it has a matte finish.

Marbling

Marbling is a technique that is time-consuming to achieve but can look very professional and effective when done correctly. Drops of colored polish are added to a bowl of water at room temperature and swirled around in the bowl to achieve the desired effect. The finger is then taped to cover all except the nail and dipped into the marbled water for a few minutes. Once the finger is removed, it has to be left to dry before doing the same with the next finger.

Neon

This is more of a color than a specific effect. The colors are extremely bright but usually dry to a matte finish.

Pierced

Pierced nail designs are now becoming more popular. The tip of the nail is pierced, and small embellishments such as charms or tiny rings are added.
