JAYLENE LOPEZ
Jaylene on her booming brow business, favorite face products, and curly hair must-haves.
“Hey, Site of Style! My name is Jaylene Lopez, I'm 21 years old and from the town of Manchester, Connecticut. By day, I’m a full time student at the University of Connecticut pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. By night, and on weekends, I’m an entrepreneur running my own business called Brains Beauty Brows. The goal of my business is to make each person feel their inner beauty as much as they feel their outer beauty, while simultaneously slaying their brows! I see it as an instant confidence booster. When I'm not doing eyebrows, I’m researching face products to make like scrubs, lotions and toner. I find it so fun and therapeutic!
Speaking of face products, here are some I can't live without; Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing pads, African Black Soap, GNC Vitamin E, A & D moisturizer, and Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting cream. The Nip+ Fab cleansing pads are gentle enough for everyday use but powerful enough to get the job done. I can’t live without these. The moment I start to feel a breakout, I swipe my face with this and it begins to relax within seconds. I suffered from really bad hormonal acne when I turned 20, [as well as] hyper pigmentation. Glycolic serum actually helps break down and lighten acne scars and hyper pigmentation, while not drying out your face, which is why I love it so much! I use African Black Soap directly on my face; it's exfoliating so it helps get rid of my dead skin and leaves my skin with a fresh clean glow every time. Now that I've covered cleansing, let's talk moisture!! My holy grail, super cheap deal is my GNC E, A & D moisturizer. It costs $2 at your local GNC, it is perfect as a light everyday moisturizer. It absorbs into my skin so smoothly and gives a nice glow, so more often than not I skip the makeup! Last but not least, and most importantly, is my Olay Micro-Sculpting cream. It is so important to find a sculpting cream in your early 20's because fighting wrinkles and signs of aging starts now. Every morning when I wake up I apply a thin layer to my face when I wake up. When it is bed time, I use a thicker layer while sleeping to allow my skin ample time for absorption. By the time I wake up, I always feel like I have a brand new face. I highly recommend it. Having a great skin care routine and products is essential to a healthy aging process.
Not only does having a great skin care routine in place slow aging down, but it is essential to a flawless makeup application. My everyday look consists of my vitamin moisturizer as a base, followed by my Sephora liquid foundation or my all time favorite... L.A Girl Pro Coverage foundation. I found it is a dupe to the Makeup Forever HD foundation and it only costs $8, and yes it really works. Lately I love my Fenty Beauty Match Stick in French vanilla as my concealer/ highlight. It blends so well and creamy, I have no complaints! To set my face, I use Airspun translucent powder, it's affordable and smells divine! I use a little shimmer on the eyes and use my go to mascara from Kiko. All of their products are LIT! A little blush on my cheeks goes a long way in waking me up and my go to highlighter pallet is Nude Rose from BH cosmetics. When my face is on, I set it with the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray.
Now let's talk hair. I am Puerto Rican so I have very curly hair that is silky. After years of using dollar store gel, I've found my go to brand. It is Curls Unleashed. I use everything including their sulfate free shampoo, curl jelly and sulfate free curling mousse. These products together give me the best curly puff, I love it. I usually switch between wash-n-go or flexi rods. I'll wash my hair on average every 5 days, to keep my curls in place. If I don't let it air dry, I will always use a diffuser; in my opinion they give the best curls I've ever seen in my life! Also, oil and moisturizer is key for your hair. I use a coconut oil mixture that gives it a tropical smell while acting as heat protectant if I were to straighten or blow dry.
My style is a mixture between relaxed and chic. Since I am a student, I have my everyday looks that include boyfriend jeans, converse and a fitted tee. I really like to keep it simple for school. When I do eyebrows I always wear black, so I find it fun to create chic looks using all black colors. I also work at Gap, so that is where I get most of my clothes from and I love it. Their jeans are bomb.com and they last forever. They have a curvy fit jean that is perfect for us women with a little booty back there! When I'm not working or going to school and have time to dress up, I channel my inner JLO. She is everything. I like to feel like JLO on the red carpet back in the 2000's wearing that deep-v, thigh bearing, iconic dress because who wouldn't want to feel how she looked?! Sexy. Although in Connecticut, it gets very cold so I don't get to dress like sexy JLO often. My favorite season in Connecticut is fall, not only because of my birthday in October, but fall fashion is the best fashion! I think the essentials for fall fashion include; a sleek leather jacket, ankle booties, thigh high boots, a warm vest and LOTS of scarves! Scarves have to be my favorite because I can use them around my hair, to keep my chest warm, or use them as a shawl over my shoulders.
There are a few things to my style that are significant and they are; my glasses, my hair, cross necklace, lipgloss and stylish nails.
Since second grade, I've had vision problems so I have been wearing glasses for quite some time now and my glasses are a part of me. Currently I'm sporting glittery Kate Spade glasses; they give my look a uniqueness that I love. Plus when I'm having a rough day my glasses cover the bags under my eyes! My hair is always changing, right now it's currently burgundy for the fall but I almost always wear it in an Afro. I feel like my hair speaks for itself, loud and proud just like me. I love my hair and thank my parents for blessing me with the curls, I feel like it represents my Puerto Rican culture and gives a little sass. I work at a hair salon called the Beauty Room in Wethersfield and they always keep my hair and curls fresh. I always wear my cross necklace because I keep God close to me at all times and as a reminder that every day and chance I get is a blessing. Next, is my lip gloss and yes it's poppin. Currently OBSESSED with Fenty Beauty gloss bomb but anything iridescent and light goes in my purse right away. I love the gloss look cause it's effortless for a girl on the go like myself, I love mattes but gloss just gives that extra POW when needed. Lastly, my nails represent me. Always being in people’s face, the first thing they see are my hands and my nails so I always keep them on point. I work at a nail salon in Manchester called Bebe’s Nails, that specialize in slaying. I will never have a bad nail day ever.
It's been a pleasure letting you guys get to know me! If you're ever in the CT area stop by to get your brows done!”

Last night was an anomaly, but it still shows Nets need more than their big three
Last night was an anomaly, but it still shows Nets need more than their big three
Things will be different when this is Giannis driving the lane.Image: Getty Images If you told me that the James Harden-Kevin Durant-Kyrie Irving trio would combine for 96 points, opposite 50 from Jayson Tatum and only 6 from Kemba Walker, I would’ve thought the Nets won that game by double figures. But last night, the Jaylen Brown-less Boston Celtics were up by double figures with three minutes…

Robb Elementary Shooting
On May 24,2022, 19 kids and 2 adults were shot and killed including 17 people injured inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX. The perpetrator was 18 year old Salvador Ramos who, before arriving at the school, he shot his grandma in the face at home, wounding her severely. Ramos entered the school with an AR-15 style rifle before shooting around 100 rounds into classroom 111 and 112 (where most of the victims were shot).
A child from classroom 112 calls 911 and identifies her and the classroom number and once again calls a second time a few mintues later and then a third time and a fourth time. Law Enforcement in Uvalde have been criticzed about their tactics and protocols they had during the shooting. Police waited outside for 78 mins before going inside the classroom. Police were also outside on schools grounds causing conflict with parents who were trying to rescue their children who were still stuck inside.
Ramos was shot and killed after an off-duty US Border Patrol Agent Jacob Albarado rescued most of the children inside the classroom the shooter was in. Albarado did save most of the kids lives after shooting Ramos and ending his terrible act. Footage has been released recently of the 77 mins that the police were outside of the classrooms and chillingly enough, the childrens screams were edited out of the footage, a police officer was seen getting hand sanitizer and another officer checking his phone.
Memorials were set up outside of the school’s sign with crosses of each victims name on them, flowers, gifts, etc. Funerals and headstones were offered to the families of the victims for free by local and state businesses. Because of greif, one of the victims husbands, Joe Garcia, died of a heart attack two days after the shooting while attending an memorial.
This is now currently the third deadliest school shooting in the US.

Twelve hours after a gunman walked into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and killed 19 students and two adults, I learned that he was “lonely” and “bullied” for a stutter and a lisp. I learned that the 18-year-old mass murderer used to play video games like Fortnite and Call of Duty. I learned that the monster at one point used a knife to cut his own face. I learned that on his 18th birthday he purchased two assault rifles that he took photos of and posted online with the caption “my guns.”
And I don’t care.
I don’t care that he had a tough upbringing. I don’t care that middle school was difficult for him. I don’t care that he struggled to make friends.
This is not because I lack sympathy. It’s because all my sympathy is used up on the carnage he left behind. I care that Jacklyn Jaylen Cazares, 10, had the whole world in front of her and that she would help anyone who needed it. I care about her cousin Annabelle Rodriguez, also 10, who was killed in the massacre with her.
And he, whose name I will not mention in this piece because he will not gain infamy from my story in death, doesn’t get to do this. Just because you’ve had it tough, you don’t get to inflict pain and misery onto the rest of the world.
“He was the nicest kid, the most shyest kid. He just needed to break out of his shell,” his friend told The Washington Post.
Fuck that guy.
You know who else was a nice kid?
Eight-year-old Uziyah Garcia, whose grandfather described him as “the sweetest little boy that I’ve ever known.” And fourth grader Xavier Lopez, 10, who was the life of the party at all his family’s barbecues and had received his honor roll certificate just hours before he was killed.
I care about Eva Mireles, the teacher who died a hero protecting her students. For 17 years, Mireles taught the fourth grade out of pure love for her students. And I know this because my mother taught for 50 years and still has trouble paying her mortgage. There’s no money in teaching. Teachers are paid in smiles, hugs and mugs with silly sayings. It’s a barter system most of us will never understand and a love that many of us will never experience. And I don’t need to know if she shielded a child on the day she died: She was a hero 17 years ago when she walked to the front of her classroom, grossly underpaid, and gathered those tiny faces’ attention.
I don’t care about monsters.
Monsters destroy.
Monsters leave wreckage in their wake.
Monsters gorge until there is nothing left but sadness and pain.
The media needs to stop trying to make men out of monsters. Not everyone is redeemable. Sometimes what it looks like is exactly what it is. Sometimes evil wins.
I don’t ever need to know that the Buffalo mass shooter had a toothache. I don’t ever need to see the Sandy Hook shooter’s drawings or notebooks, or go back to the Charleston, South Carolina, church shooter’s home so that his father can say, “I don’t know what happened, I just know that the boy wasn’t raised that way.”
He was.
He wasn’t.
I don’t care.
Once a life intrudes on another in the most violent way, finding out what that life was before that moment doesn’t matter. I don’t believe that monsters are afforded the rights of people. They don’t get to be redeemed. There is no need for reflection on the life they lived up until that point.
They are monsters.
But for some reason, America wants to study them; it wants to know who they were before that day. Why? What difference does it make? Has it gotten us closer to understanding what makes them hate-filled and callous? Has it worked to curb the violence? If the goal isn’t to paint the monster in a more humanistic light, then why bother learning who they were before they attacked and unloaded their pain onto others?
In October 2017, columnists for Slate argued against my beliefs. In a piece titled “We Need to Humanize Shooters,” Elizabeth Adetiba and Jake Bittle argued that by not giving air to their stories we aren’t learning what makes them who they are and thus are stopped from preventing acts like this in the future. They write:
But responding to these harmful characterizations by saying that we must label mass shooters like [Las Vegas shooter Stephen] Paddock as “evil” and shun all information about their motives or struggles is course-correcting in the wrong direction. The truth, difficult as it may be to accept, is that societal influences play as much of a role in perpetuating mass shootings as they do in local, small-scale shootings. The magnitude of mass shootings makes the intentions behind them more difficult to comprehend, but these shooters are also products of a society that is notoriously apathetic toward more quotidian acts of violence.
While I agree that societal influences definitely play a part in the dejection and isolation that seems to be consistent in the mass-shooter profile, I don’t know what knowing that after the shooter has murdered innocent victims helps us to understand. Everyone is dejected and isolated at some point in life, but that doesn’t mean that any of us are going to commit mass murder. We would have to have precognition levels of insight to determine who has the propensity for this level of violence. But we can stop lionizing shooters and rehashing their past with a sympathetic bent.
If we must look at shooters past then it’s best we take our cue from this 2019 Los Angeles Times op-ed and use researchers’ exhaustive lookat every mass shooting since 1966 as the template. The authors found four common themes. The first was that the majority of shooters have experienced childhood trauma, and as a result have mental health issues. The second is that in the weeks or months leading up to the shooting, almost all of them had experienced some kind of crisis that led to their breaking point. The third is the most intrusive and telling: that almost all of them studied other shooters, and in the information age, many were radicalized online. Finally, all of the shooters found ways to carry out their plans, from finding the location to securing a weapon.
These findings tell us much more than knowing that the Uvalde shooter missed large portions of school and wasn’t on track to graduate.
Other than learning whether or not the shooter has died after the shooting or has lived and will face justice, I don’t need to know anything else about them, nor do I care. The best thing to come out of the Uvalde shooting was learning that the monster was dead. The family of those who lost loved ones that day will not have to be further terrorized like those in the Buffalo supermarket shooting who will have the see the monster’s face every time he goes to court. You don’t get to take away 19 of the most vulnerable among us and two adults who loved them like family and tell us after the tragedy, after the remains, after the devastation, how tough you’ve had it. Because at that point I don’t care.
And the media needs to stop caring too.
