The early days of radiation treatment for cancer. Radiation technicians Nancy Brown, right, and Isabelle Nauer illustrate the use of the Cobalt “bomb” machine at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx as the new therapy unit makes its bow, February 7, 1953. Nauer wears a plaster cast of the type molded on a patient’s head in a brain tumor case. After conventional x-rays locate the tumor, the cast is marked so that the Cobalt unit can be directed at the same point during each treatment. The “bomb” came from Canada’s Chalk River Atomic Energy pile and produced more radiation than all the world’s medically used radium.

George Harrison in the Liverpool Institute school photo, April 1956; screenshot from The Beatles Anthology.
George’s first day at the Institute was 8 September 1954.
“The first day at the Institute Tony Workman leapt on my back from behind a door and said, ‘Do you want a fight, lad.’ [...] I hated being dictated to. Some schizophrenic jerk, just out of training college, would just read out notes to you which you were expected to take down. I could never read them afterwards anyway. They never fooled me. Useless, the lot of them. That’s when things go wrong, when you’re quietly trying to grow up and they start trying to force being part of society down your throat. They’re all trying to transfigure you from the pure way of thought as a child, forcing their illusions on you. All those things annoyed me. I was just trying to be myself. They were trying to turn everybody into rows of little toffees.” - George Harrison, The Beatles Authorized Biography
“The Big School, Liverpool Institute, was a real pain in the neck. [...] It was such a dump. It could have looked good. It could have had the paint scraped off the woodwork and been decorated like the Victoriana it was. I took Olivia to see it. Coming from California she couldn’t believe it. There was a night school going on so we were able to wander around and look at the rooms where I had been.” - George Harrison, I Me Mine
“Actually, I was a real sort of lout in my youth. When I was a kid I liked to run about and jump and do all those things kids do, but then they took me away and put me in college or high school where we didn’t do anything except Latin and logrith — logarithms.” - George Harrison, Rockline, 10 February 1988
George Harrison: “Yeah, I’d like to send one [request] too, to two mates of mine who were at school and always getting kicked out with me, Kelly and Workman, that is, Tony Workman and Arthur Kelly. If yer listening —" (John Lennon shouts) “Get a job!” (Laughter) GH: “Hello, how are yer, and all the best.” - Chris Denning’s Radio Luxembourg show, backstage at the Hammersmith Odeon during Another Beatles Christmas Show, December 1964 (x)
