Cody: plant + animal farmer. sees it as both a new experience/challenge (land, terrestrial plants and animals) but also slightly similar to what he was used to as a marshal commander. likes the hard work & care required for this lifestyle but cares more about the payoff of it all. will underestimate mint at some point.

Rex: fisherman of some kind. i don’t really have a reason for this, it just seems very likely to me. probably enjoys the peace and solitude it can bring after years of being in the situations he’s been in, but likes the learning aspect and self-sufficient parts of knowing how to fish. could also like the thrill of wrestling large fish that have bodycounts and going to competitions about it, maybe all of these options at once. possibly worries a lot about everyone else and is always sending them photos of him fishing so they respond with their own thing.

Fox: nice try. stays unemployed in a comfortable cabin in some isolated town and loves it. if he needs money, he’ll cash in on favors or do small favors for his brothers.

Wolffe: also tempted to stay unemployed, but gets restless + depressed, becomes a woodworker. doesn’t care about it at first since it’s just a way to get money and stay busy, but develops a liking towards the methodical work and the feeling of creating something very meaningful and/or beautiful with his own hands. ends up liking to create furniture for his brothers getting settled down as a hobby, but creates gothic decorations to sell as his main thing. possibly gets less depressed.

Bly: security guard, would quit, then become a geologist. liked how similar being a security guard was to being a marshal commander at times, but overall hated being reminded of how a lot of people saw/see clones. found more peace in geology bc of how delicate/patient/focused he had to be (helps reinforce his belief that he’s not a violent machine capable of nothing else), also loves learning and sharing knowledge in general. doesn’t really like working with other geologists, tends to not communicate being angry since he’s used to shutting up to get a job done. but he’s dealing. sort of.

Doom: would probably also be unemployed but because he keeps quitting any job after about a month. just can’t find anything that calls to him or keeps him happy, but knows his end goal is to have a life involving lots of plants. doesn’t enjoy being unemployed because he tends to see it as a personal failing on his part, ends up very stressed. Wolffe tries to give advice on just jumping right into plant stuff and making money off it, but Doom is hesitant to make something he loves into a job he might end up hating and quitting again.

Bacara: part-time piercer, part-time bounty hunter. likes to call them both his “piercing jobs” to the discomfort of nearly everyone else. prefers bounty hunting since he thinks it’s more necessary + familiar, but would give it up first if he was forced to only choose one (more stable pay + might live longer). backup plan is to fake his death (unnecessary & regardless of situation) and become a librarian or historian with a fake accent. sort of a nerd anyway, so this isn’t the end of the world for him, and likes how he can get away with dissociating more than he used to.

Neyo: surprisingly, professional racer. refuses to explain how he got this idea, his motives, and where the next event will be, but likes it when his brothers somehow show up. loves the exhilaration, risk (huge adrenaline junkie) and how his outfit looks. also likes the bragging rights. backup plan is to fake his death (again, unnecessary & regardless of situation) and secretly live with Bacara, becoming a chef because he likes working with knives + feeding hungry people fulfills his desire to be useful in some way. has yet to tell Bacara any of this, actually finds not saying anything about it really funny.

talking about one of my classes—mentions of csa + memory wars

i've encountered the memory wars (re: the reliability of repressed memories) not once but twice in the past few days—once on my tumblr dash and once in a reading for one of my classes:

In addition to including thorough sets of questions on the paranormal, we asked extensive questions about perceptions of supernatural religious evil. Who believes Satan and demons are active forces on Earth? Who believes that humans can be possessed by the devil? Who fears an upcoming Armageddon? Sometimes such beliefs about evil coalesce into widespread panics, as occurred in the 1980s when the FBI began to receive reports from therapists across the country that their patients had "recovered" memories of hideous abuse perpetrated by secretive, underground Satanic cults. The victims claimed to have witnessed animal and human sacrifices.

This book is based on the first systematic examination of court records in these cases. The book argues that even though many cases have been held up as classic examples of modern American "witch hunts," none of them truly fits that description. McMartin certainly comes close. But a careful examination of the evidence presented at trial demonstrates why, in my view, a reasonable juror could vote for conviction, as many did in this case. Other cases that have been painted as witch-hunts turn out to involve significant, even overwhelming, evidence of guilt. There are a few cases to the contrary, but even those are more complicated than the witch-hunt narrative allows. In short, there was not, by any reasonable measure, an epidemic of “witch hunts” in the 1980s. There were big mistakes made in how some cases were handled, particularly in the earliest years. But even in those years there were cases such as those of Frank Fuster and Kelly Michaels that, I believe, were based on substantial evidence but later unfairly maligned as having no evidentiary support. The argument of the book begins with the McMartin case, the subject of Chapter Two. This is the foundational case in the witch-hunt narrative. Whether or not the narrative applies to other cases, it appears to offer the definitive account of the McMartin case, which ended without a single conviction after once being described as the largest child abuse case in history. The only competing account is a narrative about ritual abuse that was created near the beginning of the case, an account so thoroughly discredited that the witch-hunt narrative became all the more credible. Chapter Two argues that there is a third way to see the case—as it evolved, in stages. By this account, the case began with credible evidence of sexual abuse. Significant evidence was developed in the earliest stages of the case, before it was even referred to the agency that ultimately did hundreds of interviews later blamed for ruining the case. The McMartin case became six parts of overreaction to one part reality, sweeping up six women in criminal charges that never should have been brought. But the strongest evidence—the evidence that started the case—has been lost to history. Recognizing this evidence challenges the witch-hunt narrative in several ways. The McMartin case nevertheless stands largely as a monument to injustice to five, possibly six, of the seven defendants. The uncertainty about whether it is five or six reflects the kind of complexity that is not captured by the witch-hunt narrative. Chapter Two portrays that complexity. The basic claim of the witch-hunt narrative is that there were at least a hundred, maybe several hundred, cases “just like McMartin.” The narrative is a claim about a social phenomenon that swept the country during the McMartin era. The claim has been widely accepted as fact. The best evidence consists of studies of a handful of cases, along with lists of additional case names without any elaboration about the facts. Those sources, even taken at face value, do not add up to one hundred cases. More surprisingly, a substantial number of the cases held up as “witch hunts” actually included credible evidence of abuse, or even something stronger than that. But that is only apparent after doing extensive original research on a substantial number of cases. Chapter Three scrutinizes the claim that there were hundreds of these cases across the country.

The witch-hunt narrative began an account of child sexual abuse over the span of eight or nine years, starting in the early 1980s. It is offered as the sole account of sexual abuse in day-care centers then. There is scant recognition that there were true cases of sexual abuse in day-care centers during the time period—and before, for that matter. The witch-hunt narrative is also a story of overreaction; it often employs such terms as “hysteria” and “panic” to describe the social reactions surrounding these cases. Since child sexual abuse came to be identified with this narrative, there was a sense that our social reactions to the problem were largely panic-ridden. But this account overlooks the social forces that existed before child sexual abuse “emerged” into public discourse. Those phenomena, including silence and denial, continued during the McMartin era. This is part of the unacknowledged history of child sexual abuse, which is the subject of Chapter Four. Chapters Five and Six take up two other foundational cases in the witch-hunt narrative. They provide an arc from the McMartin case. Seen in this light, the Kelly Michaels case in New Jersey is the turning point. It marked a major shift in the press, in academia, and in the courts. It was the most prominent reversal of a conviction from the 1980s. The shift was precipitated in part by dramatic change in the position of among academic psychologists about the issue of child suggestibility. It was also precipitated by the rise of the witch-hunt narrative in the popular media that began immediately after the demise of the McMartin case. Chapter Five is a systematic analysis of the case. It argues that there was substantial credible evidence of abuse that has been almost entirely ignored, and that there are significant exaggerations and other errors in the widely accepted view of this case.

Chapter Six takes up the Fuster case from Dade County, Florida, also known as Country Walk, after the name of the babysitting service that fostered the complaints in this case. The Fuster case plays a prominent role in Ceci and Bruck’s Jeopardy in the Courtroom, second only to the Michaels case. The acclaimed television program Frontline applied the witch-hunt lens to the Fuster case in two separate episodes. The case is considered by many to be one of the last convictions still standing from the misguided era of the 1980s. Chapter Six takes the opposite view, arguing that there was extremely strong evidence to support this conviction. Indeed, it takes a special kind of bias to minimize or ignore all of the evidence. Chapter Seven considers how the rise of the witch-hunt narrative has affected how we view child sexual abuse and children as witnesses. It begins with a consideration of two important developments since the end of the McMartin era, the successful civil and criminal cases against Catholic Church priests over child sexual abuse and the increase in punitive policies aimed at convicted sex offenders. The chapter concludes with an examination of how child-suggestibility claims have evolved since the Michaels case. Although it has become impolitic to ask whether children are being unduly discredited in court, there are several reasons to think they are. The arguments about child suggestibility have evolved into a much more expansive effort to label children as tainted even in cases with strong corroborative evidence. There has also been an effort to discredit disclosures simply because they were “delayed.” That worrisome development appears to be part of a larger movement to dismiss the expertise and knowledge of child-abuse professionals.

one series that I was absolutely feral about as a child was tales of the frog princess by e.d. baker and I think the reason it did such a number on me was bc like 10% of the series is actually about her turning into a frog. the rest of it is about her turning into a fucking dragon, getting appointed grand high witch of the kingdom or something, and then fighting a big magic battle. oh and also there's the bit about her dragon daughter and her dragon son in law.

- Well, it was not your main job since you only sold four books this year, but you considered yourself an author.

- And you had a hater. Someone who left a hateful review on each of your books.

- You knew that the next day after publishing your book, he would leave a bad review.

- So when your boss at the library told you that someone was regularly buying your books, you knew it could only be this hater, since the other person who bought your books was your mom.

- Maybe to understand what he didn't like or to know if he was just a coward.

- So you strode towards the spot your boss pointed at.

- "Hey, you," you said, not sure what to add after. When the man raised his head, he looked fit, and you knew you couldn't stand a chance in a fight if he decided to fight.

- "Wait, are you the author Y/N?" Rudy asked, with a sparkle in his eyes.

- Wait... A sparkle?

- "Hm, yeah, it's me," you answered, not sure what was happening.

- "I love your work. Your last book was really amazing. I have followed you since your debut."

1. one, your mom had lied to you when she told you she had bought three copies of your book.

2. And second, you had your first fan in front of you.

- "Thanks," you almost said, tears of joy welling up. "Sorry if I sound harsh. I thought you were that hater."

- "Oh yeah, I saw those reviews on your page. He's always there, but don't worry, I'll leave positive reviews to balance it. I'm Rudy, by the way."

- Rudy smiled, and you both started chatting about books that afternoon. Maybe your reviews would improve after this, not just because of your writing, but also because he found you stunning.

G H O S T :

- Ghost scared people on the battlefield.

- However, the people who were most scared of him were the mechanics on the base.

- Ghost was a horrible driver, and everyone knew that.

- So, each time he went to the mechanics, they knew it was because he had done horrible damage to the cars.

- A game was organized whenever Ghost approached – you played rock, paper, scissors, and the loser had to fix his car.

- However, you were new to the base.

- When you saw this guy standing and waiting, you went to him without realizing all this.

- But when you saw his car, you understood why no one else was coming.

- He had a bowling ball in the trunk, the roof was broken, all the windows were shattered, and one tire was burnt.

- "...did you take this on the battlefield?" you asked.

- "No." He said shortly.

- You blinked. "Then why is it in this condition?"

- "There was a grandma on the road."

- "...so, because of a grandma, you have a bowling ball in your trunk?"

- "Because I swerved to avoid her and ended up hitting a bowling alley."

- "How did you even get a driver's license?"

- "The examiner was too sick to see me again for the ninth time, so he just gave it to me."

- "I guess I'll fix your car, but please don't drive if you don't need to, sir."

- "Sure."

- The next day, he was there again with a hole in the car because of a bird. How ? You didn't know.

-But it seemed you had become his official mechanic without even knowing it.

G A Z :

- When he hears your voice in a café, he recognizes you.

- The problem is, he can't come to you.

- Because if he knows your voice, it's because of your streams.

- Your ASMR streams.

- Being a soldier means your sleep schedule isn't really regular, and to help himself sleep, Gaz discovered ASMR.

- He found out about your streams, then your Patreon, and... let's just say your ASMR is spicy.

- So yes, if he says he's a fan of yours, it implies he has to reveal he listens to that in front of his teammates.

- And he's not ashamed of it.

- But he doesn't want Price to know he likes spicy ASMR, just like he wouldn't want to know what Price's fantasies are, or what Ghost likes in bed.

- (He wants to forget Soap's idea about Ghost in pink lingerie and a thong, and the day Price wore latex pants.)

- It's a line he doesn't want to cross.

- But he's also your biggest fan.

- So he tries to walk near you.

- But you're with a friend.

- And he doesn't know if your friend knows about this.

- So he ends up just glancing at you.

- Shit, how does he approach someone who does +18 things, without saying he knows they do this?

- Maybe if he waves... or just says hello? Or maybe if he asks for a selfie or…

- "Are you trying to imitate Ghost?" Soap asks.

- "What? No. Why do you say that?!" Gaz says, looking away.

- "Because you're staring at this person like they killed your dad and ate your mom, then burned your house and kidnapped your dog."

- "...it was really detailed for a scenario," Gaz says, confused.

- "So?"

- "I just know them, but I don't want to disturb them." Gaz says, trying to lie and tell the truth at the same time.

- If Soap finds out the truth, he'll never hear the end of it.

- "Do you want me to call them?"

- "NO. Absolutely not, don't do this, mate."

- "Why not?"

- Because they'll think you listen to their spicy ASMR audios, he wants to say, but he remains quiet.

- God, he feels like a teenager.

- But suddenly, he sees you walking towards them.

- You sit next to them, and... you wink at him, pointing to his key ring on his bag.

- It's your merch.

- Meaning... you know he's a fan.

- "Thanks for supporting me," you whisper before returning to your friend.

- Gaz doesn't speak until he gets back to base, too embarrassed but also too happy.

K E E G A N :

- You were tired.

- The rush had finally ended. It was now 11 PM, and there was this one client who had just ordered 10 Happy Meals.

- You wanted to slap him. He had ordered at 22:57, and the fast food closed at 23:00.

- So you didn't have a choice but to serve him.

- You looked at your colleague, who was sighing, and you nodded.

- You were preparing the trays, ready to see 10 kids running around and getting everything dirty, but…

- It was only one man with a mask.

- When you saw him, you were ready to raise your hands and give him money. Why the heck would a man with a gun and a mask be at a McDonald's at 23:00 buying 10 Happy Meals?

- But he just took them and ate.

- One after another.

- In silence.

- In five minutes.

- And then he left.

- You looked at your colleague.

- "Guess it's as weird as people who order a burger without buns," your colleague said.

- You nodded and thought it was just the one weird client of the day.

- But every Wednesday, he was there, in silence.

- Maybe he hated Ronald McDonald, so he planned to run out of your stock of Happy Meals?

- Or maybe he collected the toys?

- You didn't know, but he was there.

- And you saw him eating those nuggets and fries without sauce.

- He didn't touch his drinks. My, how dry it must be.

- But one Wednesday you took a day off. So when you came back the next day, you joked with your colleague about the Happy Meal guy.

- But they didn't laugh.

- "Who?" they asked.

- And just like that, you realized that when you weren't there, the Happy Meal guy wasn't there either.

- You were scared.

- Maybe he thought buying Happy Meals seduced you, or it was his way of warning you before he would kill you, like a threat, "You'll end up like those nuggets."

- So, when you saw him enter, you sent your colleague.

- However, your manager decided to give you your break at that moment, meaning it would be only you and him in the place.

- You tried to act normally, but you noticed how he seemed not to like his food yet still ate it.

- You sighed and sat next to him, offering him some sauces.

- "It's better with these. You know, you can have them for free in the menu next time."

- He looked at you and nodded.

- He then tried it and smiled.

- That's when you noticed his dog tags.

- "We have a discount for military personnel, so you could take a real meal instead of a Happy Meal if you want to."

- He looked surprised and nodded.

- Next time, he ordered 2 Happy Meals and two regular menus.

- So you smiled.

- Until his other masked colleagues ordered 20 Happy Meals because they liked the skull toys in them.

- Maybe it was just military men who had a problem with Happy Meals.

I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.
