Étoiles startles out of his panicked-induced scrambling to stop and look at Charlie, eyes wide and breath stuttering in his chest. Everything is blurry but he still has his mask on so he isn’t sure what’s going on. “W-what?”

Charlie is unharmed save for a nick above his eyebrow which means Étoiles did his job correctly, but the fighter himself has been better, sure. The slime hybrid eyes his sluggishly bleeding wounds, stopping to blanch at where his hand should be before his eyes shoot back up and lock with Étoiles’ again. The next time he speaks, it isn’t as meek or unsure, “Do you feel safe enough to come with me? I-I think we’re near a cave system I recognize. Somewhere we can hide until we can uh…” He gestures vaguely to where the fighter is cradling his severed limb to his chest protectively, “Address that? Neither of us can go back outside like this, man.”

God, Étoiles hates that he’s right. There’s sticky chlorophyll dripping onto to ground from his wrist and there’s a suspiciously wet spot growing along his side that can’t be good. He’s down one hand, his scythe is still outside with at least four code monsters hovering about. He can’t respawn unless he wants to risk not being able to regrow his hand back later, fuck. They’re stuck in this cave Charlie dragged Étoiles into when he fell and he kind of hates it. Not Charlie, just being stuck. Useless.

“Listen, I know we don’t really know each other well and you’ve heard the rumors which are actually more fact than rumors I guess but I mean I had some pretty good reasons for—”

“Slime.”

“Okay okay sorry, what I’m trying to say is can you trust me this once? You’re kind of missing a hand and an eye and it’s really freaking me out, dude. Would you come with me? The codes can wait, surely?”

Non, ils ne peuvent pas attendre, Étoiles wants to protest before he registers what exactly Charlie said. He refuses to let go of his sword, bringing up his handless wrist to touch his cheek, wincing at the sharp, biting pain it causes. It’s amazing neither he nor Charlie gags at the sensation or sight, but Charlie must not find it gross and Étoiles is realizing he might be in shock. Weird. That doesn’t usually happen.

“Étoiles?” Charlie steps forward hesitantly, bringing his hand up, but stopping before it makes contact with his elbow. The sounds of fighting get louder outside and he starts to tremble, just a little. “You with me buddy?”

“Ouais,” Étoiles mummers, “You said my name wrong.” He notes distantly, grip on his sword lax. Charlie steps more into his space but doesn’t touch him yet.

“Whoops, maybe you can teach me how to on the way to my super-secret hidey hole, yeah? What do you say? Feel like walking with a misclicker?”

Étoiles should be on guard right now, especially when he’s down a limb and an eye but there’s something… comforting to Charlie’s tone, reassuring enough that has him sheathing his sword and grabbing for the offered hand, squeezing it tightly as Charlie beams.

“The ‘s’ is silent.” He mummers as Charlie urges him forward. Chatter from the hybrid fills the cave as he grips Étoiles’ hand with one of his, the other clutching a shitty, iron axe with the other. He forgets to worry about the code and finds it easier to breathe despite the cold, dark walls surrounding them.

He finds it easier to laugh too.

Thinking about a Trigun au I made a while back that is super self indulgent with a side of projection /pos

I called it the Stale Donuts AU after the donuts I would sometimes get from H-E-B as a kid that, as far as I can remember, were always vaguely stale.

It is at its core, a modern AU–Cryptid Vash–Vashwood story hybrid hodgepodge thing that was also!!! Very much inspired by multiple fics I had either read or was reading at the time!!! And of course full of yummy delicious self indulgence and self projection with bits of me spread throughout like the stale donuts thing!!! Yippee!!!!!!

On to the bits and bops of the au itself in a very rambling way (I'm sorry):

Wolfwood is Mexican American and the main pov of the thing. He lives in an apartment with Livio, who's going to the local college (go girl go, get that higher education ✨). Wolfwood drives a motorcycle because why wouldn't he BUT he ALSO owns a motorcycle place where you can get shit repaired and customized an shit like that (I don't know vehicle things ITS A COOL IDEA I DONT KNOW IF ITS ACCURATE). Meryl also probably works there with him, because in my mind I can't for the life of me separate the thought of Meryl and driving things probably because I watched Stampede first but that's besides the point—we're ignoring that. Livio, Wolfwood, Meryl, and Milly were all friends in highschool (maybe they were in a shitty band?? That's a thought for a different day) and stayed friends into their adult lives (they all care about each other so much guys). ALSO this whole thing takes place in Texas, so AT SOME POINT one of them worked at Whataburger and one of them worked at a DQ I don't know WHO WAS WHERE but at LEAST ONE OF THEM I SWEAR.

Anyways

On his way to the motorcycle shop, Wolfwood passes the H-E-B and has to drive over a short bridge. Guess where he finds Vash.

One day he's coming home from work, and as he's crossing over the bridge he suddenly stops because JESUS CHRIST WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING. Illuminated by the motorcycle headlights, a large, feathered...something startles and crawls over the edge with a sound of pain, leaving behind a trail of blood. Yippee!! Vash makes an appearance!! Of course Wolfwood's freaked the fuck out by the bleeding thing under the bridge, yet for some reason he follows it anyway (I haven't really thought of anything except hey that thing looked kinda hurt and Melanie raised him with compassion ig so)(and I love stupid men). He sees that this giant bird is 100% actually kinda injured (imagine getting hit by a car) and manages to calm it down enough to help it out at least a little, but he's also kinda on his way home and can only see with a flashlight, so there's not much he can do. He does toss it a snack he found hidden in his jacket tho. After that whole cryptid nonsense, Wolfwood stops at H-E-B! (YIPPEEE!!) Livio sends him a text. "You should totally get me a donut from the bakery"

"Still can't believe you actually like those" he sends back, still getting a plain glazed for himself. He offhandedly wonders if the bird thing would like donuts.

The next morning, now armed with a first aid kit, he buys a donut and stops at the bridge, hoping the creature from before is still there. Oh hey look, the creature from before! Now that it's daytime, Wolfwood can clearly see that yeah, that thing is definitely hurt. He says hi, and the creature seems to recognize him from the night before, but still won't let him get close enough to fully see anything other than feathers and old scars. Donut time!! The perfect distraction!!! I don't know what kind of injuries Vash has, but whatever it is Wolfwood manages to patch it up at least a little bit while he's munching on the donut. I like to imagine he's at least a little bit good at caring for animals (specifically birds) because Tristamp Wolfwood taking care of Thoma chicks makes me ill (/pos) so uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh chickens. And maybe like, a cockatiel for fun. Miss Melanie had chickens and a cockatiel that the kids would help take care of. It ends up becoming a routine where Wolfwood stops at the bridge to chill with the bird cryptid every morning and evening. Eventually he ends up telling Livio, Meryl and Milly about Vash. He also very quickly figures out that Vash has human level intelligence and isn't just a giant freaky animal and Vash manages to communicate what his name is!!! Yippee!!!

In this Vash has the Big Bird™ cryptid form and a normal human one, but can't switch between them when he's injured (like being hit by a car) so it's really great that this random human guy is helping him out.

The first time Wolfwood sees Vash de-birdified is hilarious because he goes to the bridge like normal and sees feathers everywhere, no giant bird in sight, and a vaguely familiar naked blond man chilling in the middle of it all. As soon as he sees Wolfwood, his face lights up and he starts excitedly waving.

"Wolfwood!"

"Needle Noggin?!"

"Look I'm all better!!"

Plot wise, no fuckin clue where it goes from here, vibe wise fuck it we ball. All I know is hijinx ensues and it's great fun all around YIPPEEEEEEE!!!

NachtKrapp!Changbin (Night Raven) a guardian for the good kids who can't sleep and a nightmare for the troublesome kids who won't listen to their parents. The NachtKrapp is known to sing soothing melodies for those who wish to sleep and will take and punish those who refuse to sleep. But for you he'll always sing you the sweetest melodies and wrap you in his wings where you'll be nice and warm away from nightmares and all that may haunt you. Better yet he even will let you play with the softest down feathers at the base of his sensitive wing but you'll have to deal with the half chub he's sporting because of that.

Nuggle!Hyunjin once just a water spirit that looked after the beauty in his rivers and lochs but when one little farm boy got too curious as to who was pulling pranks on his family livestock, he found Hyunjin mesmerized by the herd drinking from his rivers. But ever the Channie to the rescue giving the lively jokester spirit a different body of water to look after and let beauty flourish in and around. But once he met you the flora began to match the shade of your eyes and hair, waters full of your favorite little sea creatures that will follow you along the water's edge because Hyunjin tells them day after day that you are the most beautiful being he's ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Jersey Devil!Han nothing but pure chaos and rambunctious energy, just bouncing off the walls, pulling pranks alongside Nuggle!Hyunjin, extremely agile and a never ending stamina. Refractory period, nonexistent, he can go blow for blow. He accidentally broke your favorite possession, make him blow loads for hours on end until he is sobbing apologies and promising to be more careful around your things. But the second he finds out that that item was already already repaired by Channie seconds after he broke it he'll be getting his payback on you for how many loads you made him waste.

Feline Shifter Familiar!Felix He is the only one that you knew before you were welcomed into Channie's little lovely family. Felix was your childhood best friend and your first for many things. He helped you find out your true nature and you showed him what a good familiar he was even if he was still learning the little things about making his appearance look normal in either form. Once he learned he could keep certain feline attributes in his human form he asked if he could eat you out with his rough cat tongue. And it took a few moments for him to find the perfect middle ground between human tongue and cat tongue so that he didn't hurt you but once he did you were crawling back for head from him because he had your legs shaking in seconds with that tongue.

Hellhound!Seungmin really lived up to his name because boy did he make you life hell occasionally. Humans have doctors, animals have vets and hybrids have something in between (let’s call them hybrid vets). So when Soap comes down with a fever, Ghost goes straight into protection mode and gets him into the hybrid vet, but Soap HATES the vet.

He will kick, bite and cry if he ever knows he is going to go there; so what does Ghost do to avoid it? He doesn’t tell him. He simply tells him to go get his shoes because they are going somewhere special. (He also brings Ale+Rudy, because Price and Gaz weren’t available to help.)

Soap is confused at this point. They aren’t going to the P-A-R-K, or the B-E-A-C-H, and he’s never gone down this route before. Where is Ghost taking him? Alejandro and Rudy are giving eachother nervous glances, which is making HIM nervous. He’s whining nervously in the back at this point, and Ghost is trying to reassure him, that is until they turn the dreaded corner.

“Soap, Johnny, Pup, don’t freak out, okay?” Is what he said just before Soap burst into tears and started to panic, scratching at the doors to make sure he doesn’t Go. To. The. Vet.

Eventually, they get him in, but he won’t speak to Ghost at all. Because he made him go. Soon after when he’s had the medication he’s been given, he feels a lot better, and suddenly feels bad for not talking to Ghost, so you bet he’s finding his handler as fast as he can.

All over a vet visit.
