Development Project 01: Nostalgia and Memory. (Update 4.0: Setting up scene)

The old landscape previously used was sufficient for the scene, so only minor adjustments were made to ensure it fit better. To avoid repeating content, refer to the link above on how the landscape and its texturing was done.

Figure 1: Rearrange assets to fit blockout.

Firstly, adjustments were made to update and enhance the old Unreal Engine file. I choose to display more of the bunker walls in the midground and foreground to fill the empty edges of the render. The terrain behind the sandbag wall was sculpted to create a shallow trench. Additionally, the modelled rifle munition crate was imported into the scene to loosely estimate potential locations where riflemen might utilise them.

The ship was imported into the file and positioned in the background. Its placement and rotation were adjusted several times to ensure it appeared at a logical distance while keeping most of its details visible. The bunker with lesser intense camouflage variant is placed in the foreground while the more compacted bunker camouflage variant is placed in the mid ground to avoid stealing the foreground's attention. Three layers of barbed wires were placed at the frontline by referring to the painting cited in the previous blog post.

Figure 3: Damaged troop transport ship.

The Japanese troop transport ship, Awazisan Maru (淡路山丸), sustained damage from dive bombing during several Royal Australian Air Force sorties conducted during the battle. (Kossen et al., n.d.). It is said that the ship was ablaze and abandoned to drift by itself (The Malaysia Military History Tourism Association, n.d). I decided to tilt the ship slightly to the side, ensuring it was not fully submerged. This angle allows more surface details of the ship to be visible to the viewer.

This photo shows a photo of two Indonesian women in the Netherlands in 1960. The parents of these two women used to be from the Dutch East Indies (present day Indonesia). This photo was taken by two Dutch photographers, Ed van der Elsken and Theo van Houts.

These two photographers made them the model and icon of the city of Amsterdam as a city that is open to various ethnicities and cultures.

Newest addition to the 'Sunken Treasure' display I am working on are three different calibur musket and pistol shot from the wreck of the Princess Maria, a Dutch East Indiaman that came to grief on the Isle of Scilly in 1686. The ships valuable cargo of silver was hastily salvaged by pirates, authorities, and even royalty... Meanwhile the ships ballast, cannons, and armament remained to be discovered and recovered centuries later. Many relics from the Princess Maria turn up online from time to time and I am blessed to have grabbed these three bits of lead shot for my collection.
