Claude Monet
Tumblr media
Claude Monet was a French painter and was the founder of the impressionists. Monet loved to paint nature and show their perspective of nature using a large scale. Monet had painted many watercolours of nature and specialised in water lilies.
Tumblr media
Garden Watercolour 56 x 38 cm
This painted of Monet's caught my eye due to the softness of the colours giving it a tranquil atmosphere. The warm tones of the tree to the left of the painting helped to bring a welcoming feeling inviting you in. The way Monet paints this makes you feel like you are then and feeling the sun on your face and seeing the wind due to the movements of the painting helping you to experience what Monet saw.

Claude Monet, Path in the Wheat Fields at Pourville, 1882. Oil on canvas; 23 x 30-1/2 in (58.4 x 77.5 cm)
Monet loved to paint with bright vibrant colours helping the viewer feel peaceful and looking at the painting Monet helps to capture the details of the wheat field showing the wind blowing the wheat and seeing the clouds in the sky showing that it was windy.
Tumblr media
San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk, 1908 - 65.2cm x 92.4cm (Sunset in Venice)
This is one of Monet's most known paintings found in the national art gallery of Wales In this oil painting Monet used vibrant colours to portray the famous sunset in Venice. I like how symmetrical this painting is due to the top and bottom both having blow then moving through the sunset to the red. This painting shows passion and happiness showing the beauty of sunsets.

Aidan Turner🎨Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Lovesight
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882)
When do I see thee most, beloved one?
When in the light the spirits of mine eyes
Before thy face, their altar, solemnize
The worship of that Love through thee made known?
Or when in the dusk hours, (we two alone,)
Close-kissed and eloquent of still replies
Thy twilight-hidden glimmering visage lies,
And my soul only sees thy soul its own?
O love, my love! if I no more should see
Thyself, nor on the earth the shadow of thee,
Nor image of thine eyes in any spring,—
How then should sound upon Life’s darkening slope
The ground-whirl of the perished leaves of Hope,
The wind of Death’s imperishable wing?
Quand'è ch'io meglio ti vedo, mio amato?
Oh amore, amore mio!
Dovessi io non vedere più te
o neanche, in terra, l'ombra di te,
né il riflesso dei tuoi occhi in una fonte,
come suonerebbe,
per l'oscuro pendio della vita,
il turbinìo delle perse foglie di speranza,
l'aliare dell'imperitura ala di morte?

Frederick Douglass Series | Part 1
Frederick Douglass escaped slavery as a young adult in 1838 and became an influential leader in the struggle for abolition and women’s suffrage. His dedication to and passion for the protection of human rights brought about transformations in the US constitution.
This year marks the 175th anniversary of Frederick Douglass’ visit to Ireland.
Douglass Week, which runs from 8-14 February 2021, coinciding with Frederick Douglass’ assumed birthday, commemorates this revolutionary man’s visit to Cork.
Cork City Libraries will publish a four part series, during Douglass Week. This series will chronicle Frederick Douglass’ childhood, his experience as a slave and escape from slavery, his time in Ireland and, in particular, Cork, his two wives, his meeting with Daniel O’Connell and his achievements as an abolitionist, orator and suffragist.
Frederick Douglass – his early life
By Deirdre Swain
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. He did not know the exact date of his birth, but he estimated that he was born in February 1817. He did not know his father, and he barely knew his mother, as she had been taken away from her children to work as a slave. He was initially brought up by his kind grandmother, Betsey Bailey, until he was painfully separated from her at the age of around six years old. This was when he was old enough to become Colonel Lloyd’s slave, overseen primarily by a woman he called Aunt Katy. It was at Colonel Lloyd’s home plantation that he met his siblings for the first time, but he did not feel a connection to them; they were like strangers to him. Aunt Katy was cruel and used to punish Frederick by starving him. In his writing, he describes one instance when his mother defended him against Aunt Katy and fed him generously. At that moment, he no longer felt that he was “only a child” but that he was somebody’s child. He never saw his mother again after that, but he had warm memories of her and respected her greatly. She was the only black person in the area who could read.

From a young age, Frederick was very aware of the injustices of slavery and held strong convictions about it. He was told as he was growing up that God had made black people into slaves and white people into masters. But he was conscious that not all black people were slaves and not all white people were masters. His Aunt Jennie had run away and gone to the “free states” and was free. Frederick was no more than 7 or 8 years old when he reflected on the fact that escaping from slavery could be an option. Although his first few years in slavery were not as harsh as later experiences, he felt wretched due to Aunt Katy’s cruelty and the lack of food and proper clothing, and he was constantly struggling to keep warm. He wished he had never been born.
Happily, his luck changed and he was sent to Baltimore to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Auld. This was a kind family, and Frederick was very happy living there. Mrs. Auld was like a mother to him, and she taught him to read. Frederick was in Baltimore for 7 years. Unfortunately, in 1833 he was then moved to a harsher slaveholder, Master Thomas, who then sent him to a man called Covey, who was known as “the negro breaker”. He had to spend a year as Covey’s slave, working from dawn to dusk, and he endured brutal and horrific treatment there. He was regularly beaten so badly that he bled, and he had sores on his back that wouldn’t heal for weeks because his clothes were coarse and kept the wounds open. He constantly had a sore back from being whipped with sticks or cowskins. The first six months were unbearably hard for Frederick, but something happened halfway through the year which brought about a change in his luck once more. He was unable to continue working one day because he felt desperately weak and sick with dizziness and a terrible headache. Learning of this, Covey kicked him and hit him in the head. Although Frederick was weak, he used all the strength he had to walk back to his old slaveholder, Master Thomas, to plead his case with him, telling him that he could not stay with Covey, for Covey would soon kill him. Master Thomas, however, defended Covey’s brutality and reproached Frederick for being lazy. As Frederick describes in his third autobiography, the slave is always seen to be guilty and worthy of punishment and the slaveholder is always presumed innocent. When he finally went back to Covey’s, Covey sneaked up on him and threw him to the ground. However, Frederick was determined to fight, and he resisted and defended himself. The fight went on for hours, but Frederick would not let Covey hit him. He didn’t get injured, but he injured Covey. The law of Maryland assigned hanging to slaves who resisted their masters. However, Frederick was neither publicly whipped nor put to death, and Covey never hit him again after this. Frederick believes that this was because he was ashamed that a 16-year-old had won the upper hand against him in a fight. This incident was the turning point in Frederick’s life as a slave. It gave him confidence in himself as a man, a human being - that he was not a mere slave - and made him determined that he could be a free man one day.
Tumblr media
Image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frederick_Douglass_MET_DP254780.jpg
In 1838, Frederick did finally escape slavery. “Free” black people had “free paper” documents, and Frederick was able to get hold of a similar authorised document: a “sailor’s protection”, which bore on it an image of the American eagle. The journey was very risky, and he felt like a murderer on the run. Nevertheless, he did manage to make it safely to New York in the space of 24 hours. Here, he was a free man, but he was still in danger of being found and brought back to slavery. However, he moved to Bedford, Massachusetts to work as a caulker, and there was no fear of being recaptured there. The name his mother had given him was Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, but he changed his name to Frederick Douglass as an extra precaution against slave-hunters.
It was soon after this that Frederick became involved in the anti-slavery movement. He began reading the abolitionist newspaper, the Liberator, and he attended a lecture by Mr. Garrison, its editor. He began attending anti-slavery meetings, and in 1841, he went to an anti-slavery convention in Nantucket, at which he was invited to speak. This was the start of his new life as an abolitionist.

L’Aurore, Le jour, Le crépuscule et La nuit [fr.] Dawn, Day, Dusk and Night.
William Adolphe-Bouguereau (1825-1905)
Realism. French academicism.
“Dawn is Bouguereau’s first artwork in a series of the times of day. Others include Dusk (1882; National Museum of Art, Havana); Night (1883; Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Washington, DC); and Day (1884; private collection, USA). Though each allegorical figure’s personality is as different from the others as night is to day, a continuity exists among them – in their poses, loosely draped garments, and the landscapes they occupy. The paintings, a study in complements and contrasts, share a harmony of line, form, and color. Although the artist exhibited each work at the Paris Salon, they never hung together; he sold them to his dealer Adolphe Goupil, who in turn placed them with American collectors”
