I just finished episode 7 of Shou, and Izaya's phone call to Mikado is very interesting to me. He initially calls to antagonize Mikado, or at least it seems like it with how he criticized Mikado's response to the Dollars going off the rails again and his strained relationship with Masaomi.

But really, it seems more like genuine advice to me than most of the bullshit Izaya goes on about in the series. I'll be real, I personally think Izaya is more honest with Mikado than anyone else in the series. When he gives him advice, it feels a lot less manipulative than his "advice" for any other character. This is especially true compared to how he is with Masaomi. Every bit of advice Izaya ever gives Masaomi is wrapped in riddles or culminates in some sort of arm-twist to get him to do what Izaya wants. Sure, Mikado is part of Izaya's plan to awaken the head, but it seems like he has a vested interest in Mikado ultimately coming out on top. I wonder why that is? Perhaps the fact that Mikado is a direct parallel to Izaya himself within the high school trio? Izaya clearly sees himself in Mikado, and wants to support him in a way he probably didn't have when he was up-and-coming himself.

It especially comes through to me at the end of their call this episode:

"You're a good person, and that's something to be to be respected. But didn't you start the Dollars because you got bored of being respectable? An escape from the ordinary—isn't that your dream? That's why I'm worried about you. I said it before, didn't I? To enjoy an ordinary life, you have to constantly evolve. But that's definitely not something you should try to do by yourself."

Izaya ends the conversation by insisting Mikado call him by his given name, a sign of friendship and equality, and reminds him that he has lots of people in his corner—Anri, Kida, and him. It's especially notable to me that Izaya doesn't reference himself as an exclusive authority here, and even sites Masaomi (who doesn't get along with Izaya) before he references himself. If it were really a manipulative tactic to keep Mikado under his thumb, he wouldn't have suggested Mikado communicate with his friends about the problem. Hell, in the original run, Izaya's WHOLE PLAN was centered around these three NOT communicating.

What's also notable is how Mikado takes that advice. He thanks Izaya in earnest, and later reminisces how he used to think Izaya was sketchy, but he now believes he's nice.

Orihara Izaya is nice. To Ryuugamine Mikado.

I think that's kind of an important facet of Izaya's character, that he is capable of caring for others. He's just a little chosey about who in his circle actually gets that care.

I have no explanation for why Compress would wear the mask while asleep. (The original was a dude wearing a gas mask because he was worried about polluted air.)  Maybe he knows Dabi sleeps like a maniac and, on realizing he got the futon next to his, opted to wear some facial protection to avoid getting slapped in the face by the oblivious little shit.

Also, the headcanon that Dabi talks in his sleep...sure, why not?

Imma just drop my head canon on Shizuo’s strength and anger issues here because I got no one to talk to about this man.

I think Shizuo has severe anxiety, that anxiety puts himself in a constant state of fight or flight. We know his go too is fight, but we have seen him run when someone he cares about is in trouble too. This would explain why he can tap into his adrenaline strength at any time, he’s constantly stressed from anxiety.

Let’s look at the things that often “piss him off”

Someone bringing up love, (the guy who thought the bathhouse chick loved him) Shizuo is very insecure about love and relationships especially at that part. Of course the idea that someone bringing up their grossly twisted sense of love is going to make him anxious especially when it’s affecting his job.

Often times the things that set Shizuo off are, love, those he cares about being hurt, things that threaten his sense of normalcy, arrogant and prideful people, people who act like bullies, Shinra asking to do experiments on him, and I believe food and money insecurities. (anything affecting his job leads him to being anxious) and we can’t forget izaya causes a lot of anxiety.

Being captured in the play he was apart of, Shizuo doesn’t like being restrained and put into a corner. He also hates people seeing him as a monster, even though he sees himself that way. Being treated as the villain even in pretend set off his anxiety. Plus the added stress of acting and being on stage for the first time? Of course he flipped out he was like 18 and had grown men grabbing at him.

Izaya causes serious anxiety to most people so for someone that already is at a heightened state of anxiety he would pick up on Izaya’s off putting nature quicker than others. Izaya then proceeds to make Shizuo’s life harder and more dangerous than it already was causing Shizuo’s anxiety to worsen and become linked to Izaya’s very presence.

When Tom was being confronted by those other boys in middle school, Shizuo automatically assumed what the boys assumed (that Tom was using Shizuo) was right. When Tom without knowing Shizuo was listening denied and said he’s genuinely friends with shizuo, Shizuo looked shocked but definitely latched onto Tom as a comfort to be around.

The one constant nice interaction Shizuo had with others was with the convenient store clerk. He latched onto that as a safe place so of course as a child he would lash out when someone who was nice and a sense of comfort was being threatened. He was a kid and scared.

Shizuo was bullied in school, we see him then lash out and throw a desk. My theory is that this happened for a long time and it slowly caused his anxiety to worsen. (I believe Shizuo is also dyslexic and was extremely shy before his anxiety cause angry outbursts. So I think the kids would pick on him for that. And what’s one thing bullies tend to do? Take away your lunch or lunch money)

The lunch money/lunch being taken away has a point just follow me here. Kids getting food taken away and being left hungry leads to food insecurities and anxiety around eating in general. Let’s think about when Shizuo first shows adrenaline strength, his brother took his food. If Shizuo hadn’t eating all through school due to bullies and then gets home to his safe zone and the same thing happens it’s going to cause an extreme fight or flight response. His response was fight because he was hungry and the comfort space of his home was now changed and he was anxious again. This was one of the most damning things to me when I first rewatched the show and was making theories.

Now onto other symptoms he shows!

Angry is a secondary emotion and anxiety can lead to angry outbursts or being irritable.

It’s stated that he doesn’t like loud and crowded places even though he lives in a busy city. So if it’s not that he’s new to city life why would he have such a problem with it? I also believe he has light sensitivity due to over stimulation, he where’s his sunglasses even at night. The only time he takes them off is when he is trying to prevent them from being broken.

Shizuo has a huge sweet tooth and hates bitter things. He stays away from alcohol all together even when some alcohol is sweet. My guess is that the alcohol worsens his anxiety. People with anxiety tend to have a sweet tooth because of the dopamine and serotonin that comes from sweets. We also expend more energy and are blood sugar can drop dramatically after anxiety attacks.

A lot of people with anxiety have addictive personalities or go towards substances to try and  alleviate the anxiety in some way.

My final verdict! Shizuo is an anxious person not an angry one.

im sorry if this isnt what you're asking for, im not entirely sure what this means so im just doing some general headcanons abt the cast and their eating habits + the like

when the van gang isnt at russia sussia, i like to think that saburo sometimes begrudgingly invites them into his apartment for dinner

they're all tired of eating his spaghetti but he doesnt know how to make anything else and no one else is gonna make any offers

but if that doesnt happen then erika and walker probably dip to go to some cafe to drink tea + eat sandwiches

that's when kyohei and saburo get fast food that they absolutely do not eat in the van (yes they do)

shizuo isnt like the rest of us in our early twenties and by that i mean he doesnt have to rely on his anger and nicotine addiction to satisy his hunger.

"what else could possibly sustain shizuo heiwajima?" you ask?

tom tanaka.

tom is the ULTIMATE dad friend and he doesn't even try.

90% of the time they're eating out and there's no WAY tom will settle for fast food bc it upsets his stomach, so he'll pick somewhere nicer (probably some casual dining) and then pick up the bill because "i picked where we would eat, i can't make you pay."

but sometimes tom gets this,,,, uncontrollable urge to,,,,, pack a lunch,,,,, and then another lunch,,,,, and then suddenly him and shizuo are eating a balogna sandwiches with carrots, a fruit cup, and not one but TWO string cheeses.

so needless to say, shizuo is eating much better than the rest of his peers.

like shinra, for example, lives off of TV dinners and celty just fucking lets him.

and don't even get me started on izaya

cereal, cereal, some fancy food place bc he happened to be out, cereal, cereal, more cereal, cereal again, cereal, fatty tuna DROWNING in soy sauce, cereal, a fistful of candy, cereal

he's malnourished for sure but with all that milk his bones are shizuo proof (until theyre not)

mikado and anri are both very particular when it comes to their diet and they both have secret meal plans for the week to make sure they get the recommended amount of vitamins and calories they need to grow up big and strong

anri definitely stays on the more veggie friendly route and would opt out of carbohydrates for more greens. it's more expensive, sure, but its easy on her figure™

but mikado is a bread fiend and inhales two two loaves of bread a week, if not more. it's both filling and cheap, so its a win win for him.

but it's never once occured to masaomi that he can budget his income so that he doesnt starve for at least a day or two before payday (hes secretly been trying to figure out how mikado goes home to cook dinner EVERY night).

by the time his check comes in, hes been dying for something more than school lunches for DAYS so right off the bat he'll drop all sorts of cash on so much russia sushi his stomach will hurt, and a lot of the time hell pay for anri and mikado too. after that its all impulse buys and conviently ignoring the value menu and then BAM hes broke again.

hes not he only financially unstable, womanizing maniac we know with this problem, because rocchi is there too

but unlike poor masaomi, rocchi has loving and supportive girlfriends that happily offer homecooked meals without ever even considering the possibility that their rocchi is broke-hi

and while we're on the topic of overly devoted girlfriends, lets talk about THE overly devoted girlfriend: mika harima.

mika, who eats like a queen, and seiji, who eats like a king, and also namie, who eats like a coma patient.

theyre all very fortunate in the financial department and even though namie is the most fortunate of all, she doesnt eat for pleasure but rather just to make her stomach shut the hell up so izaya will stop pointing it out.

its not that she doesnt want to eat its just that she genuinely, from the bottom of her heart, does not give a single fuck about her own well-being and so food rarely crosses her mind

With his back propped against the trunk of a tree, his arms wrapped tight around your form that’s been neatly tucked against his chest, the two of you will sit there in content silence. As the two of you watch the beautiful, night sky, a shooting star darts across your vision. You perk up, not quite sure if it was real and looking for any traces that it was. Kinnosuke chuckles at your adorable behavior.

“Make a wish, darling.”

You hum, thinking for a second as you did so. Smiling, you turned back to him to see he was already smiling at you. Heat rose to your cheeks, warming them slightly as your eyes darted in another direction before meeting his once more.

“What did you wish for?”

Laughter rumbled from his chest as he shook his head. “I don’t need to make a wish when I have everything I want right here in my arms.”

And with that, he gently cupped your cheek before pulling you into a kiss. Your cheeks had never burned quite so hot before. Your mind reeled at his confession and you felt yourself smiling into the kiss. Kinnosuke always knew how to make you feel special.

It was a normal day, just like any other. You had just gotten home from work, a tired sigh escaping your lips as you slipped off your shoes. Kinnosuke still wasn’t home and it was already late; half past eight, to be exact. As you shuffled through the house, making your way to your shared bedroom, you pulled out your phone. Huffing, you blew hair out of your face as you plopped onto the bed. Just as you opened the conversation with your lover, fingers poised and ready to type, he sent a message.

<Sorry darling, afraid I’ll be late again tonight. I’ve got to stop that damned monster from terrorizing the streets! I’ll be home as soon as possible. I love you, angel.>

You paused, smiling softly to yourself. He was late to get home most nights, the culprit generally being the monster who always spoke so cruelly of. It never ceased to put a smile on your face though. The thought of your lover putting his all into his work to protect the people; it truly made your heart swell with joy.

<Alright my love, stay safe out there. I love you.>

You were used to him getting caught up with his work and being out late but... He has been caught up with work everyday for well over a week now, and you would be lying if you said you weren’t a bit sad. He had been coming home late at night, sometimes even as the night began to bleed into the next day. However, you never once thought he was cheating on you. There was absolutely no way a man of his morales could, or would, ever think about it.

But your heart ached terribly tonight. The pain of missing him had finally caught up to you. You wanted nothing more than to be held in his strong arms and pepper his face with kisses for hours on end. So, since it was impossible to fulfill your wishes, you did the next best thing.

Gingery, you pushed yourself off the bed. Opening the drawers to his dresser, you began to rummage through the articles of clothing. Picking out a t-shirt and lounge pants, you gently held the former piece of apparel to your nose and took in a deep breath. A smile spread across your cheeks at the smell of Kinnosuke’s cologne still lingering on the shirt. Discarding your clothes almost immediately and donning his instead, you wrapped your arms around yourself and sighed in content.

It wasn’t uncommon for you to wear his clothes, but it was definitely rare. The only times you did this was situations similar to right now. They offered you comfort, even if only a little.

You desperately wanted to actually see Kinnosuke tonight and spend time with him. It was now almost nine as you made your way to the couch, dropping down into the cushions. Fishing the remote from in between the couch cushions, you turned the tv on once located. As the screen came to life, video footage captured the Black Rider and Kinnosuke in a high speed chase. Chuckling, you shook your head slightly as you watched in amusement for a moment before changing the channel.

As you laid curled up on the couch, you were slowly losing the fight to stay awake. You desperately needed the rest, today had been excruciatingly stressful. But at the same time, you missed Kinnosuke and wanted to actually be able to spend a little bit of time with him. Unfortunately, you eventually lost the fight and slumped asleep.

The sound of a door opening and keys jingling jostled you from your sleep. Yawning, you gently pushed yourself up before rubbing your eyes. Foot steps echoed throughout the room before stopping. Just as you were about to remove your hands, your lovers voice stopped you in your tracks.

“Forgot how cute you looked in my clothes.”

As your hands fell, your eyes widened. There stood Kinnosuke, his arms crossed as he leaned his shoulder against the wall. The smirk on his face caused heat to flood your cheeks but you couldn’t care less. He was home! Jumping up, you dashed to his side, tackling him into a hug. He staggered back slightly, bracing himself before wrapping his arms around you and stroking your hair.

“I-I’m sorry, I... I just missed you, so much!”

He pulled back, causing you to look at him while he smiled down at you. “I said you looked cute, didn’t I? But I’m not gonna lie, you look so much cuter wearing nothing.”

“B-Babe!” Heat rushed to your cheeks again as he winked at you.

Without another word, he swept you off of your feet. Slinging you over his shoulder, he began to make his way to the bedroom. Woo boy; it was gonna be a long night.
