Y'all!!! At long last I have completed my friends video game sweater! He said it was "absolutely kickass" which is nice.
This was my first time making clothes for someone other than myself and while there are obviously things I would improve on I'm still really happy with it.
Video game logo and "soon" as well as "true love is possible" on the sleeves are done in duplicate stitch.

Made some new socks just in time for Valentine’s Day! 🧦💕
Knit them as normal according to my super secret sock recipe, and then used duplicate stitch to add the hearts on. They’re very warm and comfy!
Yarn is Berroco Ultra Wool Superwash worsted!

Pokéball hat and mittens for my sibling’s Christmas gift!! My first time really doing duplicate stitch (it scares me) so I’m proud of how these turned out!
Pattern: Mitts are Point Edward Mitts by Fairlight Fibers, hat is Retro Beanie by Woolly Wormhead. I made the Pokéball additions myself
Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK in Cream, Black and Red

When working with mystery yarn sometimes you gotta acknowledge it was Not the Right Tool for The Job. Most of the time you’ll figure it out in the first few rows (or earlier if you’re one of those magical people that swatch) but if you’re like me, someone not too fussed with the particulars, who has genuinely never used the yarn specified in the pattern, sometimes you’ll figure it out rather….. late.
I thought I was ready to admit these socks were not fit for purpose when the first time I wore them I tore through the heels. They languished in the repair pile until I learnt how to darn and were relegated to bed socks and I chalked it up to a bad lot. I loved the colour of the yarn, and whilst it wasn’t exactly mystery yarn as it did have a label on the inside of the cone stating 75% acrylic 25% wool, my first big clue should have been that one can break it apart with one’s hands…. We live and learn.
AND YET.
Here I am darning another hole and putting in something akin to 20 lines of duplicate stitch because I am a sucker who can’t let something go and they’re starting to wear out. My bed socks. Are starting to wear out. And here I am repairing them yet again. Despite knowing this is a futile endeavour. Madness. I have learnt nothing.

Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon!

I LOVE Sailor Moon. I've loved it ever since I accidentally caught an episode early one Saturday morning in the mid 90's. When I first had the idea to begin Magic Rabbit Fiber Arts, this was one of the first designs I conceived of. With some judicious use of duplicate stitching, the design came together well and I figured I could do all the Senshi. All except.....
That Brooch. That. Brooch. And so, I added clay to my fiber arts!

While not perfect, these are SUPER soft and comfy. I've got some prototypes in the works for the other Senshi, and in fact have produced some combination mitts already!

And of course, we respect true love in this house, and as such these two are also an item:

I truly love making these, and would love to make you a pair! If you're interested, feel free to head over to Magic Rabbit Fiber Arts or ping me here. We can make amazing art together.

Using the Meow Mitt chart on a self drafted fingerless glove pattern. Doing the duplicate stitch with plötulopi is taking quite a while, but I like seeing the cat slowly develop!

Made my middle child a beanie. Since I'm still just working in single colors, I did that duplicate stitch thing to add the pattern. It's a bit crooked but I'm okay with that. I added the brim by hand.

I’m sorry... what?
Knit a really basic looking blanket and then spend what may well feel like the rest of your life sewing on all of those birds in duplicate stitch?
You can probably adapt it to knit it all in intarsia easily enough, but a lot of knitters are not going to want to embroider that much detail on afterwards.
It might look pretty but it sounds like a nightmare project unless you also enjoy the sewing aspect.

If you’re not a knitter then you probably won’t understand exactly how batshit doing this was. That’s fine, but I’ll explain under the cut for anyone who’s interested. The pattern is Guðrún Herdís Arnarsdóttir's modification of Lyle Stafford’s one ring scarf (both are free).
The eye at each end I wrote the pattern for myself based on a design on the cover of the editions of the Lord of the Ring I grew up with (i.e., my dad’s, for whom the scarf was a present).
The scarf is done using a technique called double knitting, which means you’re working both sides of the scarf literally at the same time, carrying two yarns forward and back to alternately knit and purl and alternating which colour you’re using (work the knits with colour A, purl with colour B, swap for the other side). This gives you something which has two sides that are stockinette, but different colours.
The technique allows you to make an identical pattern on both sides by switching which colour you’re using for the knit and purl stitches. The advantage of this is that you end up with the two sides woven together rather than a tube and don’t have to carry the yarn as with stranded colour work.
The problem with this is when you’re working a non-symmetrical pattern where it matters which way around the writing is. The writing will be the correct way around on one side, but backwards on the other side.
Guðrún’s modification fixes this, but the trade-off is that because you’re no longer working the pattern the same on both sides you now have four potential stitch combinations instead of two (AB, BA, AA, and BB).
Just to make it even more complicated for my project the pattern colour-coded the stitch combos and uses black and red for two of the combos, but not for what for my scarf would be black-black and red-red. This caused more than one error. I have undone and redone a lot of rows.
#also there are two major mistakes in the pattern#tbh the fact that there are only two is pretty damn good#altering the pattern is also no simple undertaking#I only noticed the first one after 50 or so rows so i fixed it with duplicate stitch#the other i noticed a lot quicker so undid it#but also wrote out that specific part of the pattern#so like if you want to make this yourself for some reason hmu first and I can give you my errata#knitting#lotr
