Experiment AU: The Subjects
From Agent Mi's (VS Miku's) notes. Under the cut for length.
Note that Agent Ru is L/n Luka, Agent Ri is MMJ Rin, Agent Re is VBS Len, Agent Ka is WxS KAITO, and Agent Me is 25ji/N25 MEIKO.
Subject 001, given name Hoshino Ichika, age 17; responded to a call for test subjects with Subject 003. The subject’s parents were compensated, and the subject was taken into Agent Ru’s care. Despite not being the first to arrive, Subject 001 was the first experiment. The hybrid transformation via electrocution using ectoplasm as a conduction material was successful, and the subject has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate air. Keep a close eye on Subject 001 and do not let the subject use the air manipulation unless in anti-ecto suits; Subject 001 will literally attempt to take away your breath if agitated. As a human, the subject has black hair and icy-blue/gray eyes; as a ghost, the subject has white hair and sky-blue eyes. (Not in the notes: uses they/them pronouns.)
Subject 002, given name Tenma Saki, age 17; was the first subject brought to us. The subject was brought to us from a children’s hospital in hopes that our experiments could help the subject’s condition (pediatric multiple sclerosis and epilepsy). The subject’s older sibling, Subject 013, came with Subject 002, though only Subject 002 was placed in the care of Agent Ru. The subjects' parents were compensated. After the successful transformation of Subject 001, Subject 002 was transformed the same way. Although the subject’s transformation was less stable to begin with, Subject 002 showed better health after (fewer remissions and seizures). Subject 002 has most standard ghost abilities and the ability to heal others. The subject also has an increased healing factor compared to the other hybrids. Subject 002 cannot fly at high speeds, teleport, or duplicate. As a human, the subject has blonde hair that fades to light pink, and pink eyes; as a ghost, the subject has light blue hair that fades to pale green, and yellow eyes.
Subject 003, given name Mochizuki Honami, age 17; responded to a call for test subjects with Subject 001. The subject’s parents were compensated, and the subject was taken into Agent Ru’s care. Rather than using the electrocution method used on Subjects 001 and 002, Subject 003 was given an infusion of ectoplasm via an intravenous line. The transformation, while slow, was successful, though it caused the subject great physical pain as well as seizures and high fevers (over 40°C) that nearly killed the subject before the transformation took hold. Subject 003 has standard ghost abilities and very limited cosmic energy manipulation. Subject 003 has a specialized room for testing cosmic energy manipulation in the event that the subject’s power grows stronger. As a human, the subject has light rosy-brown hair and light blue eyes; as a ghost, the subject has light silver-blue hair and light red eyes.
Subject 004, given name Hinomori Shiho, age 17; the subject came to us after the acquisition of Subject 008, as the two are siblings. The subject was allowed to know Subject 008 was okay, but learned too much about the experiments and attempted to escape. As a last-ditch effort, the subject was given an intramuscular sedative injection mixed with ectoplasm. Despite developing high fever (over 40°C) with seizures, a semi-stable core developed, and the subject was placed in Agent Ru’s care. An intravenous infusion of ectoplasm stabilized the core and completed the transformation. Subject 004 has most standard ghost abilities and sound wave manipulation. Test all abilities in a specially soundproofed room, as Subject 004 is likely to try and escape. Subject cannot duplicate, but has grown duplicate body parts. As a human, the subject has silver-gray hair and bright green eyes; as a ghost, the subject has dark green hair and yellow-green eyes. (Not in the notes: uses he/they pronouns.)
Subject 005, given name Hanasato Minori, age 17; found after a failed idol audition and was offered a spot in our testing under Agent Ri. Following the transformations that nearly killed Subjects 003 and 004, the transformation method reverted back to electrocution. Subject 005 was successfully transformed, but developed a Lichtenberg scar on the left leg up to the chest due to too-high voltage. The scar glows when the subject’s abilities are in use. The subject also developed epilepsy following the transformation, though the seizures are largely controlled with medication; despite this, the subject does have occasional absence seizures. Subject 005 has standard ghost abilities and hope manipulation. Hope manipulation for the subject primarily takes the form of constructs, though has been used to motivate others as well. Subject 005 does not fly well; possibly related to occasional absence seizures. The subject is also incredibly enamored by Subject 006. As a human, the subject has light brown hair and light gray eyes; as a ghost, the subject has silver hair and pale orange eyes.
Subject 006, given name Kiritani Haruka, age 17; we reached out to the subject after the subject quit the idol industry and disbanded the idol group ASRUN. Patient agreed to our tests and was taken into Agent Ri’s care. Subject was placed into a medically-induced coma and cooled to 33°C prior to intravenous infusion of ectoplasm. The cooling prevented high fevers, and the subject showed no complications coming out of the coma. However, the transformation was unstable, with a severely underdeveloped core. A mild electrocution stabilized the subject’s core, and the subject showed no side effects beyond pain, which faded over the course of a day. Subject 006 has standard ghost abilities and astral manipulation; however, many of the subject’s abilities are weaker than the other subjects’, likely from the original underdeveloped core. As a human, the subject has dark blue hair and blue eyes; as a ghost, the subject has clover-green hair and pale blue eyes. (Not in the notes: uses he/they pronouns.)
Subject 007, given name Momoi Airi, age 18; we reached out to the subject after the subject quit the idol industry. Patient agreed to our tests and was taken into Agent Ri’s care. The transformation method was once again electrocution using ectoplasm as a conduction material, but lower voltages were used than those on Subject 005. The transformation was successful, and the subject has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate sensory perceptions of others. Be careful around Subject 007, as the subject is highly temperamental. As a human, the subject has coral-pink hair and reddish-pink eyes; as a ghost, the subject has turquoise hair and light pink eyes. (Not in the notes: male-female bigender, uses she/her pronouns.)
Subject 008, given name Hinomori Shizuku, age 18; we reached out to the subject after the subject quit the idol industry. Patient agreed to our tears and was taken into Agent Ri’s care. Before experiments could begin, the subject's sibling (Subject 004) demanded to see that Subject 008 was okay and learned a bit too much. Despite a successful transformation, Subject 008 suffered a cardiac arrest after electrocution and died for approximately five minutes; however, the stable core minimized damage to the human half, resulting in only minor brain damage from hypoxia. Subject 008 has most standard ghost abilities and can manipulate plants. Someone is to be with the subject at all times, as the subject is incredibly forgetful and bad with directions. Subject 008 has difficulty maintaining intangibility, invisibility, and flight. As a human, the subject has very pale blue hair and light blue eyes; as a ghost, the subject has pale pink hair and seafoam-green eyes.
Subject 009, given name Asusawa Kohane, age 17; responded to a call for test subjects with Subjects 010, 011, and 012. The subject's parents were properly compensated, and Subject 009 was placed under agent Re’s care. The subject’s transformation went without issues, although the subject's grasp over the new abilities was highly unstable at first. The instability was caused by an undiagnosed anxiety disorder; after being properly medicated, the subject quickly gained control. Subject 009 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate water. It is not known if the subject can manipulate the water in your body, so always be in an anti-ecto suit with the subject. The subject cooperates best with Subject 010. As a human, the subject has pale sandy-blonde hair and light brown eyes; as a ghost, the subject has violet-pink hair and hot-pink eyes. (Not in the notes: uses she/they/he pronouns.)
Subject 010, given name Shiraishi An, age 17; responded to a call for test subjects with Subjects 009, 011, and 012. The subject’s parents were properly compensated, and Subject 010 was placed under agent Re’s care. Despite agreeing to testing, the subject attempted to escape after the transformation of Subject 009. The subject had to be tranquilized before transformation, which was ultimately successful. However, the subject is severely phasmophobic and does not cooperate with testing. We believe Subject 010 has most, if not all, standard ghost abilities and can manipulate heat/fire. We are trying anti-anxiety medication on the subject for future tests in hopes that Subject 010 will cooperate. The subject seems more willing to cooperate with Subject 009, and bickers with Subject 011 in a friendly manner. As a human, the subject has black hair that fades to dark blue, and amber eyes; as a ghost, the subject has white hair that fades to amber, and turquoise eyes.
Subject 011, given name Shinonome Akito, age 17; responded to a call for test subjects with Subjects 009, 010, and 012. The subject’s parents were properly compensated, and Subject 011 was placed under Agent Re’s care. Despite being temperamental with a sharp tongue, after we acquired the subject’s sibling (Subject 019), the transformation was successful. Subject 011 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate lightning. All testing must be done with agents in anti-ecto rubber suits. The subject cooperates best with Subject 012, and bickers with Subject 010 in a friendly manner. As a human, the subject has bright red hair with a dyed blond streak in the bangs, and olive-green eyes; as a ghost, the subject has dark blue hair with a white streak in the bangs, and bright orange eyes.
Subject 012, given name Aoyagi Touya, age 17; responded to a call for test subjects with Subjects 009, 010, and 011. The subject’s parents were properly compensated, and Subject 012 was placed under Agent Re’s care. The transformation of the subject was successful; however, the transformation worsened the subject’s existing chronic hand pain. Subject 012 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate darkness/shadows. The subject is acrophobic, and while the subject can fly fine, the subject is generally reluctant to do so. The subject cooperates best with Subject 011, and is generally the one to keep the other subject calmer. As a human, the subject has split-colored hair that is dark blue on the right and pale blue on the left, and gray eyes; as a ghost, the subject has split-colored hair that is silver on the right and gold on the left, and royal blue eyes. (Not in the notes: uses he/they pronouns.)
Subject 013, given name Tenma Tsukasa, age 18; the subject came with Subject 002, as the two are siblings. Subject 013 was placed in Agent Ka’s care, though was allowed free visiting to Subject 002, and later Subject 012 (a friend who might as well be another sibling). The subject was transformed without issues. Subject 013 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate visible light. Always wear specialized eye protection (and ear protection–the subject is extremely loud) when working with the subject. The subject is also incredibly dramatic and showy. As a human, the subject has blond hair that fades to peach-orange, and orange-yellow eyes; as a ghost, the subject has light violet hair that fades to dark blue, and golden eyes.
Subject 014, given name Ootori Emu, age 17; the subject was sent to us by the subject’s family following the death of the subject's grandfather. They did this in order to demolish the stage the subject insisted on keeping at a theme park. The subject’s family was compensated, and the subject was placed in Agent Ka’s care. Subject 014 developed depression after arrival, but masked it heavily. The subject’s transformation was successful, though Lichtenberg scars (which glow when the subject's abilities are used) developed on the subject’s arms (possibly related to the subject’s Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome diagnosis). The subject’s arms also developed mild neuropathy. Subject 014 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate happiness. The subject’s happiness manipulation is similar to Subject 005’s hope manipulation. As a human, the subject has light pink hair and light pink eyes; as a ghost, the subject has bright blue hair and bubblegum-pink eyes. (Not in the notes: uses any pronouns.)
Subject 015, given name Kusanagi Nene, age 17; the subject responded to a call for test subjects with Subjects 016 and 020. The subject is selectively mute as a result of social anxiety, and is usually kept with Subject 016. The subject's transformation was successful; however, the subject developed chronic pain and fatigue as a side effect. Despite struggling to maintain the abilities due to the pain and fatigue, Subject 015 has most standard ghost abilities and can manipulate metal. The subject’s anxiety has not improved with current medications; further dosage testing is required. The subject cannot fly well, duplicate, teleport, or form strong ectoplasmic constructs; the subject primarily uses metal for shielding. As a human, the subject has very pale grayish-green hair and light violet eyes; as a ghost, the subject has pink-tinted black hair and light green eyes. (Not in the notes: uses she/they/it pronouns.)
Subject 016, given name Kamishiro Rui, age 18; the subject responded to a call for test subjects with Subjects 015 and 020. The subject often helps Subject 015 communicate, so the two are kept close to each other. The subject’s transformation happened alongside Subject 015’s; unlike the other subject, this transformation had no major side effects. Subject 016 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate electromagnetic energy. The subject is never to be left without supervision and is not allowed access to any tools. Subject 016 was already caught attempting to build something (claiming it as a robot for Subject 015 to communicate better). As a human, the subject has light purple hair with cyan streaks and pale yellow eyes; as a ghost, the subject has light blue hair with dark purple streaks and violet eyes. (Not in the notes: uses any pronouns.)
Subject 017, given name Yoisaki Kanade, age 18; after Subject 003 agreed to be a test subject, Subject 017’s grandmother sent the subject to our care (Subject 003 was Subject 017’s housekeeper, and Subject 017 had no guardians that can care for the subject; the subject's mother is dead, the subject's father is comatose, and the subject's grandmother cannot care for the subject). The subject was put in Agent Me’s care, though the subject fell into deeply unhealthy habits of neglecting personal needs over composing music–even without proper musical equipment. After a very strict feeding and antidepressant regiment, the subject was transformed successfully. Subject 017 has most standard ghost powers and can manipulate music; however, the subject’s powers (except for music manipulation) are weak, likely due to the subject's poor personal care. In addition, the subject suffers debilitating chronic migraines. Please ensure Subject 017 eats, sleeps, and takes medication on a regular basis. The subject cannot duplicate or teleport. As a human, the subject has very pale silver-blue, almost white, hair and light blue eyes; as a ghost, the subject has black hair and dark pinkish-purple eyes. (Not in the notes: pronoun-indifferent.)
Subject 018, given name Asahina Mafuyu, age 18; subject was sent to us by the subject’s parents, and the parents were properly compensated. The subject appeared pleasant at first, but upon realizing the reason the subject was here, the mask dropped completely. The subject became cold and withdrawn, and revealed an inability to taste anything. It was only Subject 017’s composing that helped Subject 018 become cooperative. After starting a strict antidepressant regiment, the subject was transformed successfully, though Lichtenberg scars developed on the subject’s right arm, which glow when subject's abilities are in use. The subject also reports occasional pain in the right arm. Despite this, Subject 018 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate cold/ice. Music, especially Subject 017’s music, is almost required to have the subject cooperate. As a human, the subject has dark purple hair and eyes with a gradient from dark purple to sky-blue; as a ghost, the subject has pale blue hair and eyes with a gradient from indigo to periwinkle. (Not in the notes: uses he/it/no pronouns.)
Subject 019, given name Shinonome Ena, age 18; subject came to us in search of Subject 011, as the two are siblings. Not taking any further risks after what happened with Subject 004, the subject was tranquilized and put into Agent Me’s care. The subject’s parents were told the subject has responded to a call like Subject 011, and they were properly compensated. The subject was transformed successfully, with no lasting issues. Subject 019 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate the earth. Like Subject 011, the subject is very temperamental, and the subject bickers often with Subject 020. Despite this, the two get along well. Subject 019 must be observed at all times to ensure the subject does not use terrakinesis to attempt an escape. As a human, the subject has dark rosy-brown hair and brown eyes; as a ghost, the subject has bright pink hair and light brown eyes.
Subject 020, given name Akiyama Mizuki, age 17; the subject responded to a call for test subjects with Subjects 015 and 016, claiming it was to escape bullying. The subject's parents were properly compensated, and the subject was placed in Agent Me’s care. The subject was the final one transformed, and the transformation went without issues. Subject 020 has standard ghost abilities and can manipulate illusions. The subject bickers with Subject 019 in a friendly manner almost constantly; the subject also found a sort of kindred spirit in Subject 018. Be extremely careful with Subject 020’s illusions, as they are extremely difficult to differentiate from reality. As a human, the subject has pale pink hair and pale pink eyes; as a ghost, the subject has pale silver hair and pale dusty rose-pink eyes. (Not in the notes: uses she/they pronouns.)

Imagine if the students successfully “defeated” Monokuma in trial 5, and also that Kaito incidentally had about one more day to live as of that point in time. (This is the end result of my trial 5 AU, not that any of the story in that post is particularly relevant to the AU story I’m about to present here.) An anon suggested to me that, from here, the students could demand that Monokuma owes them a life – in other words, he has to nurse Kaito back to health for them.
I had my doubts over whether it’d be the right call to actually trust Monokuma with Kaito’s health in that situation… but then again, that’s the fun part. What if they did make the mistake of entrusting Kaito’s life to Monokuma? What cruel things could he do while still technically complying with their demands?
Here’s what I thought of: Monokuma “saves Kaito’s life” by making a huge Flashback Light full of Kaito’s backstory plus all his experiences throughout the killing game itself, and all those memories get shoved into a fresh body. This would create a new person who is essentially still Kaito and is also perfectly healthy. Ta-da, Kaito gets to live!
Meanwhile, Kaito – our Kaito, the one who actually went through the killing game with his friends – well, he’s not needed any more. So, completely unbeknownst to anyone else, Monokuma just leaves him somewhere to die.
Aaaaand my thoughts on this idea escalated rather a lot, to the point that there’s kind of a whole story here.
Kaito’s death
Kaito is taken to some empty room somewhere – I dunno, maybe there’s a bed in it to at least give a vague impression that it could be some kind of hospital room, but maybe not even that – and told to just wait for the nurses to come and see to him. So he waits, his suspicion growing, and it doesn’t take long for him to get the sinking realisation that nobody’s coming, are they. He goes to open the door to try and look for Monokuma and yell at him to stop screwing around and keep his goddamn end of the bargain, only to find it locked.
With a chilling dread, it hits him that this was all a trap – a really obvious one at that, one he literally walked right into like an absolute moron. Monokuma never had any plans to cure him at all.
He’s going to die here, in this room, completely and utterly alone.
Kaito wouldn’t just give up, of course. He’d furiously try to bust down the locked door keeping him trapped there, but… his body would be so weak by now that he wouldn’t stand a chance. He’d only end up hurting himself even more, and after a while he just wouldn’t have the strength to keep trying.
And he might have more or less resigned himself and been mentally prepared for the fact that he’s not surviving this illness – though losing that glimmer of a way out he’d almost thought he had really, really kind of sucks – but, this is worse than he thought it’d be. Up until now, he'd finally begun to feel some relief in that, even if he does still end up dying, at least he'll die something of a hero, surrounded by his friends. Not like this. He never wanted to die like this – pointlessly, uselessly, alone and forgotten like he never even mattered. He doesn’t even have anything to distract himself with or to do to feel like he’s making a difference in his final hours. There’s just nothing but waiting to die, the pain getting harder and harder to bear as he feels his body slowly tear itself apart.
This is probably the absolute cruellest possible way Kaito could die from his illness, so much worse than how it happens in canon. (And, damn it, he hasn't even been to space…!)
Kaito would have no idea what's happening outside of the room he dies in, so he might be able to console himself to some extent by thinking that, once he’s gone, when Shuichi and Maki never see him again and realise they were tricked, they’ll be furious and will fight to avenge him. (Or, perhaps there’s still a chance, if they realise that something’s up soon enough, that they might be able to come for him in time and somehow save him after all…? It’s such a long shot – his death feels so close, dammit – but they’re his heroes, they’re amazing, so maybe—!)
But in reality... they wouldn't even know. They’d just obliviously leave him there to die, because Kaito would be right there with them, cured like Monokuma promised.
Kaito’s survival
That’d be the second horrible part of this – but not because this new Kaito who meets up with Shuichi and Maki all “cured” would be like some hollow imitation who isn’t truly Kaito at all. No; that’s not how it works. Flashback Lights create real people.
While I said at the beginning of this post that the one who died alone was “our” Kaito, that wasn't really quite fair of me. The other Kaito who's here now deserves to be thought of in exactly the same way. He would be our Kaito too, one hundred percent. Much like how Alter Ego Gonta was another Gonta, this is another instance of Kaito, separate from the one who died, but still him.
On the one hand, the new Kaito could have been made from a clone of the original Kaito’s body, so that he looks completely identical and nothing seems amiss at first. But on the other hand, he could be in an entirely different body – which is the version I’d rather lean towards, because that’d make things get awkward and painful a lot more quickly.
(If you want something to picture him as looking like: because it makes sense that Team Danganronpa would have picked a body that looked kind of similar and still fit his character, I’m imagining one of Kaito’s beta designs. I went for the one with poofy hair and eyebrows to rival Taka’s, specifically because he doesn’t look too similar to our Kaito, yet he nonetheless still has a very dorky Kaito energy to him. Meanwhile, his clothes would presumably be exactly the same. That and, despite the poofy hair, Kaito would totally grab some hairspray at the earliest opportunity and attempt to style his new hair into his trademark spiky upwardsness, just to try and look and feel a bit more like his usual self. The result would be, uh… something. It’d be something, all right.)
Some time after taking Kaito away to be cured, then, Monokuma presents Kaito’s miraculous recovery, brazenly handwaving the new body by claiming that extensive plastic surgery was totally necessary to save him. Maki and Shuichi would initially be all “?????? don’t mess with us, how the FUCK do you expect us to believe that this is Kaito”. Except... it is. His face and voice are completely different, but everything about how his eyes light up when he sees them, and the way he talks, and how quietly hurt he seems when they question if it's really him - it's still absolutely Kaito. And he appears to be just as genuinely confused as they are by the different body once they point it out to him and show him to a mirror.
Maybe they'd also confirm it by asking him things that only the real Kaito would know – and he knows all of it. Not just knows it, he obviously feels it, too. After asking him his favourite spaceship and seeing him visibly restrain himself from launching into a huge excited ramble about why that spaceship is so cool (exactly like he didn’t restrain himself from doing last time)… they can't deny it's really him.
The last thing Kaito remembers is being led away by Monokuma, and then he woke up like this; he must have been unconscious for whatever the hell was done to him in between. He and his friends end up concluding that Monokuma must have saved his life by… transferring his consciousness into a new body? Which seems more possible than they might have imagined considering how the Virtual World worked, now that they think about it, so maybe they'd be able to accept that.
(Is transferring a consciousness like that actually possible in this universe, though? Or does the Virtual World computer just create a virtual copy of them from their memories while the original one sleeps, and then Flashback Light their virtual self’s new memories back into their real body when they log out? That’d mean the virtual person would have to be deleted afterwards. It’d be painless and they’d never remember it, but in a sense, it’d be killing them.)
Kaito himself is pretty chill with it once he’s got over the initial shock. Sure, it’ll take some getting used to looking like this – he’s gonna have to grow himself a new goatee, to say nothing of the hair – but still, he’ll take this over dying any day. (He’d almost forgotten what it felt like to not be in pain.)
It'd still be super awkward for Shuichi and Maki, though, trying to adjust to Kaito looking and sounding completely different on the surface, constantly reminding themselves that this face and this voice is still Kaito. The two of them – especially Maki, who has a harder time trusting people instinctively – wouldn't quite be able to shake off the nagging possibility this could be some kind of impostor aligned with Monokuma who's just really really good at acting like Kaito. Of course they'd want to believe in him, because a different body is still infinitely better than losing him, but it wouldn’t quite come naturally.
Kaito, being Kaito, would very much pick up on the signs that his sidekicks are still a little subconsciously suspicious of him. It’d sting, but he wouldn't bring it up. Kaito's always fine! Now that he's healthy again, he’s got absolutely nothing to worry about! …which is to say, he doesn't want to go admitting to his new worries, not when doing so would be giving them even more reasons to feel like he's not quite Kaito and secretly not really want him around.
Kaito’s existence
But just when Shuichi and Maki have started to really get used to Kaito’s new body and things are beginning to feel somewhat normal between them again, everything would come out during the equivalent of trial 6.
As Shuichi figures out what Flashback Lights really do and Tsumugi starts trying to make everyone despair over how “fictional” they all are, Kaito, because he’s Kaito, would be having none of her bullshit. (However, I’ll keep this part brief here since I’m hopefully going to do a regular trial-6-with-Kaito AU at some point that should really be the place I expand on this properly.)
Sure, learning that they’re “characters” created from fake memories when the killing game began is kind of a lot to take in, but it doesn’t change the reality of who they are right now. The only thing that matters is what they want to believe, and they obviously want to believe that they’re real, just like they always have! Hell, their pasts being fiction is great news in Maki Roll’s case – she never really killed anyone, and she’ll never have to!
And Tsumugi’s claims that nothing matters because it was all “fiction” for entertainment are even more bullshit. Their pasts may be made up, but the entire killing game really happened. All those people really died. Every bit of the pain and suffering they and their friends went through in it was absolutely real.
But as he’s saying this part, Tsumugi turns to Kaito with a scathing grin. “How would you know? You weren’t even there.”
Before anyone can question what she means by this, she turns on another video – and this one’s not an audition tape. There were Nanokumas in the room where the original Kaito died. His final hours were recorded, as proof that Kaito is dead.
They wouldn’t watch the entire thing – he was in there for something like twenty-four hours – but she could have put together a “highlights reel”, some of the moments where Kaito couldn’t help but express exactly how lost and scared and desperate he felt. And of course it’d culminate in the moment of his death, just to hammer it home and make sure they know that it’s far too late to save him.
As Shuichi and Maki are reeling in horror from the suffering Kaito went through and the fact that they let that happen to him, Tsumugi goes for the decisive blow. She explains how the new Kaito came to be here, calling him a “fake”, an “imitation” who “tricked” them while they left the real Kaito to die.
And… Kaito kind of starts to believe it.
…See, one of the reasons this scenario really grabbed my interest (other than the prospect of Kaito dying scared and helpless and alone while also not being gone from the story afterwards) was that until now I didn’t think it was possible to give Kaito existential issues. He just has too much conviction in who he is. Under regular trial 6 circumstances, the reveals about Flashback Lights and his backstory being fake memories would barely faze him at all.
His memories are fake and all those things in his past never really happened? Okay, so he’s kind of shaken to realise his grandparents and fellow astronaut trainees don’t exist – but in that case, if none of the people in his memories are real, then the only person those memories matter to is himself. And if he feels like they were real, they might as well have been, at least in terms of the person he is now because of them. Oh, but the person he is now isn’t real, because the “real” Kaito is that murder-happy asshole in the audition video? Well, no, that dumbass was just somebody else, duh. Maybe he had the same body and possibly even the same name, but that doesn’t matter. The real Kaito, the one and only Luminary of the Stars, is right here! That's who he wants to believe he is, so it's who he is, dammit. End of discussion.
But in this situation… the real Kaito was undeniably the one who died alone in that room. Not him. His memories might feel real, but he doesn’t have the right to feel like those events happened to him, not when the memories belong to somebody else – someone who actually experienced all those things, whose friends that he experienced it all with are right here. It’s like he’s just stealing those memories, stealing that identity, stealing Kaito’s entire life. That’s not fair.
He still wants to be Kaito; he’s never gonna want to be anyone else, but… there’s no way he deserves to decide that, does he? Not when the real Kaito died, and Kaito’s sidekicks are still here and grieving for him. Knowing that, and with Maki Roll and Shuichi giving him these hurt, horrified looks that say You're not Kaito… maybe he really isn't.
(But Kaito is the only person he wants to or even knows how to be. So if he's not Kaito, then… who the hell even is he?)
Kaito’s friends
With Kaito stunned into speechlessness, and Shuichi and Maki shaken from the undeniable demonstration of how easy it is to just fake an entire person, leaving them also questioning how real they really are despite Kaito’s earlier efforts, it seems like Tsumugi’s succeeded in making everyone despair.
(at this point Keebo is supposed to barge in with his hope nonsense, but hey, how about we don’t have that clogging this up when I’m trying to tell an interesting story here)
But after a little while of none of the others having it in themselves to protest Tsumugi’s claims, Kaito (or, well, someone who once mistakenly went by that name; it doesn’t matter now) speaks up – hesitantly, because he still isn’t sure he really deserves to. “Hey, c’mon, Shuichi… This isn’t like you. You can’t just give up like this.”
(He resists the instinct to add, “You’re my sidekick,” because no, he’s not.)
It doesn’t matter about him, but Shuichi’s still absolutely real. He’s Shuichi Saihara, the Ultimate Detective who’s gonna save everyone, right? Never mind what Tsumugi says – that’s who he wants to be, who he’s always been trying so hard to be, so that’s who he is. And if that’s the case, then he can’t let something like this get him down!
“I guess this doesn’t mean much coming from me, but… I believe in you. For real.”
Shuichi stares at him in dawning realisation. This is… exactly the kind of thing Kaito would say to encourage him at a time like this. Especially the way he’s selflessly helping someone else even though he’s the one who’s got to be suffering the most right now. He… really is Kaito, isn’t he?
Kaito doesn’t meet his eye, muttering that that’s not really for him to decide. But… if Shuichi and Maki Roll want him to be Kaito, then – he glances at Shuichi hopefully – then maybe…?
Shuichi firmly tells him that no, that’s wrong. Kaito was just asserting that Shuichi and Maki and everyone else here get to decide who they want to be, so why should it be any different for him? If he wants to be Kaito, then Shuichi’s with him all the way. And Maki feels the same, right?
Maki puts in, slowly, like she’s still figuring this out as she speaks, that she’s been thinking hard about things since he pointed out that this means she never really killed anyone. It’s true that it’s a relief to know that nobody ever died because of her, but… she still feels like she killed all those people. It still hurts, because all of those memories feel real to her.  So in that sense, it’s like she might as well have actually gone through all that hell.
Then… it must be the same for him, right? Even if it wasn’t really him who trained with them and supported them, he feels like it was, doesn’t he? So… he might as well be the same Kaito. If her feelings matter even if they came from fake memories, then so do his.
Hearing both their words to him, Kaito’s face gradually lights up into a huge, somewhat desperate grin. Of course he wants to be Kaito; there’s nobody else he’d rather be! And, Shuichi and Maki Roll, they… they still wanna be his sidekicks, right?
Of course they do. Shuichi and Maki were pretty shaken by the initial shock of seeing Kaito’s death and realising where the Kaito standing in front of them came from, to the point that their kneejerk reactions in that moment might have made him feel like they didn’t see him as Kaito or want him around. But having a little bit of time to process it and reflect on it, and seeing how badly Kaito was hurting from thinking this is how they feel about him… there’s no way that’d be what they settle on. They’re his friends – and they can’t bear to lose him twice.
Maybe they messed up in the sense that they let Kaito die on his end, but they also simultaneously didn't lose Kaito on their end. This person who's here for them right now is still him, and none of what happened to the other Kaito is his fault. How could they just throw away this second chance? They’re still going to need Kaito’s support – and this Kaito needs them, too, more than ever. It’s awful that they failed Kaito once, but they can at least make sure to never fail him again.
(Kaito tells them firmly that no, they didn’t fail him. There’s no way Kaito would have ever thought that, no matter how afraid he was at the end.)
Epilogue
After escaping and settling into the outside world, as the survivors put together a gravesite for the friends from their game who didn't make it, they make sure there's a grave there for Kaito as well. Kaito, Shuichi and Maki visit it from time to time. It only seems right to do so.
The other Kaito, the one who died scared and alone, would have been happy to know that this’d be how it ended, Kaito reflects: to know that he still gets to live on, in a way, and keep being there for his sidekicks. That he didn't just die useless and forgotten. He's certain of it - because he's Kaito, too.
[part 2 to this post - because I had another fun idea that branches off partway through this one - here!]

i'm struggling to send an ask through the blog interface, pop-ups aren't working maybe? for questions, 3 and 14
Questions for Muns of Canon Muses !
3. What is something that was never addressed at all in the canon material that you have independently developed for your muse?
While not completely unmentioned, I do have some very specific height hcs for some of the book characters based off of how they are described. Lupin himself has been very consistently described as a man of average height, so... hello google what is the average height of a french man in the 1900s → 165-170cm.
For reference,
Lupin III ranges from 167 to 179 cm
Kuroba Kaito/Kaitou KID is 174cm
Persona 5 Akiren/Joker is 175cm
I settled on ~170 cm as the default Arsène Lupin height just because it’s funny if the two most famous, Lupin-inspired lil phantom thief upstarts are just a smidge taller than the original Lupin.
As for the other book characters...
Beautrelet (described as “very tall” by another full-grown man while Lupin was described as “middle height” by a woman) → at least taller than Lupin so 171-175cm
Béchoux (“Pale-faced, he was tall, skinny...”) → again, at least taller than Lupin so ~175-180cm
Blonde Lady/Clotilde (”a tall, thin woman”) →  ~175cm
Ganimard (”little old man” “little man”) probably shorter than Lupin so ~160cm
Josephine (one of her predecessor/mother/or maybe it was her all along was described as ”tall, slender and beautiful”) →  probably ~175cm
Sholmes (”tall, smooth-shaven”) also based off of canon Holmes who is at least ~185cm
Point is, there’s a lot of tall people here, Lupin is surrounded by people taller than him. Source: Me. I declare it’s true.
14. What is your ideal AU for your muse?
I do have a particular AU that I think a lot about but this post is getting long and this is a duplicate question so! Here’s a shorter idea/concept:
AU where Barnett (Lupin) + Béchoux + Beautrelet end up working together, also known as the 🅱️etectives!AU. What will they do, where will they go? On to a crime scene of course!
In which only one of them is an actual, authorized detective who has to nervously cover for his two parasites. Meanwhile, the two aforementioned parasites skedaddle off in the background, doing nosy detective things, detective-ing their way into places they don’t belong, as totally legitimate detectives should.

In which Mewtwo writes some more actual Madoka AU plot stuff
Y’all
I got an idea for the Madoka AU and I need to write it down
It’s super angsty and I know I haven’t posted about the Madoka AU in a hot minute but I don’t care, I need to write it down
(translation: I had an idea for a brief but pretty interesting story beat that could happen in Dionysus’ labyrinth and needed to write it down to show you guys asdfgj)
Warning: I ended up writing a lot and this got VERY long
You know the seance shrine rumor in Magia Record? It’s kinda like that. (basically one of the rumor’s abilities is to create an illusion of someone dear to their victim to get them to stay forever)
To go with the whole mirror theme I had going in Dionysus’ labyrinth, one of the familiars in an area could be an actual flying mirror. (like imagine a standing mirror with little devil wings that flies around) But if you see one, either kill it fast or R U N. Because as soon as it gets close enough, it would scan you (specifically your soul gem) and transform itself into a duplicate of someone who would cause you the most pain.
Anyway, as for how it’d factor with the characters. The main group are making their way through the labyrinth and they eventually get to this area. At this point they’re (by which I mean mostly Kaito and/or Kaede) are arguing that they should be able to save Ouma and get him back to normal, and even if not they shouldn’t have to kill him. Meanwhile Shuichi is fckin terrified and Rantaro is just done with this shit.png They’re too caught up in this argument and only realise that one of the mirror familiars has scanned one of them at literally the last minute. The mirror familiar turns into a copy of Maki (since her death was still fairly recent) and most of the group panics. After a brief scene of the group struggling to fight her, Rantaro realises how the familiars work and that they need to take the copy out and run. They do that (albeit reluctantly) and start running, taking out any other mirror familiars that get too close.
But then at one point Kaede misses one and it charges at her, so Rantaro gets in the way to try and get a better hit, only for it to scan him instead. (I have a feeling everyone knows where this is going) Of course, the familiar transforms into the person that’d cause him the most pain: Haruto. Rantaro is of course VERY shaken and isn’t able to fight him at first, and the fact that this copy is very calmly asking him why he left him is NOT helping. The others don’t recognise him and of course have no idea what’s going on. “Haruto” realises that there are in fact other people here, and is annoyed that people would DARE interrupt his reunion with his “dear friend”. A fight scene breaks out, with him mainly targeting Kaede and claiming that she could never understand Rantaro the way he does. Eventually Rantaro snaps out of it and is able to land a finishing blow on him, only for him to ask “why did you let me die...?” before fading away. (not only in reference to just now but mainly in reference to Macbeth) Kaede Akamatsu being Kaede Akamatsu of course panics and asks if Rantaro is okay and who that guy was, but Rantaro Amami being Rantaro Amami brushes her off and insists they continue, insisting that person shouldn’t matter to them and walking off. Kaito is of course angry about Rantaro being shady and follows him out with Shuichi. Kaede of course ends up following them, but makes a mental note to ask him about this person later.
Aaaaand scene. I know this is super fckin long but I NEEDED to write all of this down because asdf this is just a really good idea to me Idk Kaede needs to find out about his backstory somehow and I thought this could work. *shrug*
Anyway, if you’re interested in this AU, please send me asks! I’m always happy to answer if you have any questions!

What quirks do ya think the V3 kids would have?
There is no way I'll call them but I will explain how do I think they whould work? I mean there is a lot of Bnha x Danganronpa au's so you can look at those but here is my answer:
I think that Ryoma whouldn't have something flashy so simple speed boost could work well with him.
Kirumi whould definitely have something strong but also really balanced and something that could be used for defense. For example maybe she could create very strong spider webs?
Gonta whould have either something similar to Anivoice or be quirkless dude that is just so fucking strong and talented with animals and bugs everyone thinks he has a quirk but he just doesn't have a quirk. That whould be pretty funny.
Miu whould have something that whould help her inventing- maybe correction quirk wich makes her see mistakes? Nah that whould be boring and a tiny bit op... Maybe a quirk that makes her change shape of anything she touches?
K1B0 himself is a quirk? becouse let's say that profesor had a quirk that whould bring items to life. That's what I whould go with tbh.
Kaede obviously has to have to do something with music. So 1: she can play on "imaginary" piano 2: she can control people with it but it won't happen if she plays on regular piano.
Kaito can have something similar to Uraraka or exact opposite. That whould be pretty good for him I guess?
Angie obviously can have something like making things she draws alive for a moment. Or just bringing stuff to reality.
Shuichi can have a quirk that makes him see everything he is looking for (including people). Still it whould have a huge downside wich is that if he won't practice his quirk he can't see an object for more than 2 seconds without getting extreme migraine.
Tenko whould have a strength stealing quirk. If she touches someone for even a split second she adds their strength to hers but her body doesn't change during it. I know this one is kinda wierd but it's mostly cuz Neo Aikido uses opponent's strength right?
Rantaro could have an unknown quirk to anyone so everyone says he's just quirkless ;) but in reality he used up his quirk and its resurrection.
Kokichi- maybe a mind control? But his whould be a bit more tricky than Hitoshi's since he whould have to make someone belive his lie ooor he can predict an action someone takes but it's not 100% accurate
Himiko can create illusions but if she whould overuse it she whould have a huge headache and is unable to move much during illusion since she doesn't practice hers quirk.
Maki can scent blood and if she moves towards someone bleeding she is faster.
Korekiyo can posses power and knowledge of deceased as long as he knows exactly how they look like/was the one who killed them/knows their full history. Or he could see ghosts.
Tsumugi has shape-shifting easy. But she needs to know everything physical about them in order to become them (something like with twice and his duplication)

Growth
"Mou ichido!"
Kaito's hands glided along the piano keys swiftly; he fumbled a couple of notes, but each keystroke seemed more confident than the last. He'd progressed from scales to chords and arpeggios and reading sheet music, impressing his sensei with how quickly he picked up on each new skill the Bard taught him. In just a few days, they'd already met for several additional lessons that Kaito was all too happy to pay for.
"Sugoi desu wa, Kaito-kun," Mhalv'a stated afterwards, eliciting a snicker from the Au Ra. A vaguely annoyed expression crossed the Miqo'te's face. "... what? What are you laughing at?"
"You need to practice your Hingan more," Kaito teased. "You talk like a woman."
At the Raen's remark, the Keeper let out an indignant huff, though he managed to keep his composure otherwise. "Shizuka ni shinasai, omae," he clapped back.
The Au Ra couldn't help but laugh at his teacher's response. "Ooh, busting out the informal 'you,' huh?" he teased, wrapping an arm around Mhalv'a's shoulders; the Keeper's eyes narrowed in response, and he had to suppress an urge to hiss. "If you really wanna insult me, say somethin' like, 'Kutabare, konoyarou!'" he snarled, baring his teeth.
Narrowing his eyes slightly at Kaito, the Miqo'te asked, "And what does that mean?"
"Basically something like, 'Fuck off, you prick,'" Kaito explained with a grin. "I mean, the direct translation is probably softer sounding than that, but it's pretty effective with the right inflection, and Domajin are way too polite to use that kinda language normally, so it always sounds harsh."
Mhalv'a rolled his eyes and reached back to pluck the younger man's arm from his shoulder. "All right, this isn't meant to be Hingashigo lessons for Mal'valen," he stated in as stern a tone as he could muster despite his amusement at the situation. Little by little, Kaito had grown on the Keeper - and vice versa - and both were beginning to see one another as brothers, for better or for worse. "You've paid me quite a handsome amount of gil, and I intend to ensure that you do not leave this room dissatisfied."
"You comin' onto me, Maru-chan?" Kaito asked with a waggle of his eyebrows.
With a wide-eyed look of disgust, the Keeper placed his hand on the Raen's face, then gave him a rough shove. "Enough," he growled. "Did you pick out a song you want to learn?"
That reaction caused Kaito to laugh loudly; it was just too much fun to tease someone as prudish and stuck-up as this Miqo'te seemed to be. Once his laughter died down though, the Au Ra reached into the satchel sitting beside the piano bench, then pulled out the sheet music he'd found. "Got it right here!" he exclaimed, grinning at his teacher.
Delicately, the Keeper placed his forefinger and thumb on the sheets, then plucked them from Kaito's hand so he could take a look. He nearly groaned at the song title alone, although as entertaining as he actually found the lyrics, he didn't want to let Kaito see his amusement. Best not to let on that he actually had a sense of humor, lest the Au Ra decide to try and get even closer. It was bad enough that he was being called "Maru-chan;" he wasn't terribly thrilled at the prospect of additional cutesy nicknames.
"This doesn't seem too challenging," the Miqo'te stated as he set up the sheet music. "Go ahead and try the introduction."
Pursing his lips, Kaito nodded, then began to play as instructed. Keeping his eyes on the sheet music - an actual song, not just chords and arpeggios - and avoiding looking at his hands was a challenge, but with all the practicing he'd done up until then, it didn't take him very long to adjust.
The two of them played together for some time, with Mhalv'a gently correcting little mistakes in posture and fingering, and Kaito replaying various sections over and over. By that point, their one bell lesson had gone far beyond that - the normally nocturnal Keeper had somehow been up all day working on this with the Au Ra, though he wasn't aware as he was still full of energy. Playing with Kaito reminded him why he'd become a Bard in the first place. The music lifted his spirits, reinvigorated him, and his apprehensions that the young Raen wouldn't fully commit to his lessons were proven very wrong. Playing the piano was practically all Kaito had done for the past week after his talk with Hinan.
And now, here he was, having gone from unsteady scales to playing an entire song in that time. Mhalv'a felt almost overjoyed by the boy's talent, not to mention proud that he could be the one to say that he'd taught Kaito everything he knew about music. Suddenly, being a teacher didn't seem like such a terrible job.
In time, the two were playing simultaneously, laughing and singing together - something that neither of them could have ever foreseen. Kaito was rather surprised by the fact that his teacher was willing to vocalize such vulgar lyrics, but it helped to remind him that Mhalv'a was just as much a regular person as he was. There was something very refreshing about getting someone who seemed uptight to loosen up and have some fun. Besides, the Miqo'te had a rather angelic singing voice that Kaito found far more soothing than he would have expected, so that was a nice bonus.
As they finished playing one last time, both paused, listening to the number of bells chiming on the chronometer. "Guess we should call it here, huh?" Kaito remarked upon hearing the eleventh strike.
"Are you certain? It's only eleven bells." Mhalv'a raised a brow slightly - it seemed odd that a Raen would want to turn in so early in the day.
"Yeah, at night,” Kaito responded.
Mhalv'a's eyes widened and his ears pinned back slightly - there weren't any windows in the studio Zheyn'a set up, so he'd had no idea so much time had passed. "Shite, I have to get back home. Hinan and Aomaho are going to be worried, my sister's going to interrogate me..." he huffed, standing quickly to gather his belongings. "Let me know when you want your next lesson. And no payment for the next one, I think you've overpaid me already."
Before Kaito could respond, Mhalv'a was running out the door to get back to his house. He was slightly taken aback by what his teacher said; he hadn’t overpaid, he was very sure about that. They'd had four official lessons for which he'd paid a total of two hundred thousand gil, and, in fact, he felt that he owed the Bard more just by virtue of the fact that they'd spent all day in that studio together.
Sinking a fang into his lower lip, Kaito turned back to the piano and pressed the G key, holding it for a few seconds. A warm smile crossed his lips as he placed both hands on the keys, then practiced the song one last time.
***
Meanwhile, in Garlemald...
"How many did he get away with?"
"I couldn't say for certain, madam." The soldier peered at his superior, trying to get a bead on her emotional state. Unfortunately, there was no seeing past that mask she wore, and her tone remained level.
She paused briefly before continuing. "Original copies, all of them?"
"And some duplicates and triplicates."
The superior was beginning to grow irritated. "Was there anything left? Anything he managed to drop?"
For a brief moment, the soldier was relieved - thankfully, he did have some good news. "Yes, madam. Nothing was dropped that we saw, but some of the more damning files were locked away in a hidden safe."
"And you're certain they haven't been taken as well?"
The soldier gave a resolute nod. "We checked earlier. Every one of them remains."
"Good... and do we know his identity now?"
At the question, the soldier reached into his armor and pulled out a file bearing a sketch of a young Au Ra man; he looked to be in his early to mid twenties, with messy hair and freckles. "Yuuyake Zora, also known as Kaito Akaruta. He fought in the Doman Rebellion alongside his siblings and was declared dead nine months after having gone missing," he explained, handing over the file.
"... and he went 'missing' because he stowed away on our damned ship..." the superior stated, her tone betraying her frustration. "How did he escape imprisonment?"
"That... we're not sure just yet..." the soldier stated, turning his eyes away shamefully. "One measure he was there, and the next, there was no sign of him."
The two stood silently as the superior officer considered the information she was given. "Have we any additional information about anyone related to him?" she finally asked.
"We do, in fact," the soldier responded. "It seems he's rejoined his siblings. Our sources inform us that he's been spending the majority of his time in Shirogane. Presently, he is living in a house which estate records say belongs to his elder brother, Aeluan Hoshinata, along with the other Akarutas and several others."
At this new information, the superior's stance changed - somehow, she almost appeared hopeful. "What others?"
"A number of Miqo'te, for starters," the soldier stated, flipping through more papers. He stopped on one in particular, and his eyes went wide. "Like... this one," he added, showing the file to his superior.
She looked over file for several measures, then lifted her head to regard the soldier once more. Somehow, despite the mask, he could feel his superior staring daggers at him. "Go and find the captain. We will coax out these pests and exterminate them," she ordered.

Verses has been updated, and a reminder that mains mean me/you approached each other for the ship first, and I’ll be putting my main headcanons for that muse into the ship. Duplicates that follow will be changed/diverged as much as possible, but still relevant.
Verses/AUs are split depending on which guild Kaito joins, what kind of ice slayer he is, shipping with a certain muse, which duplicate it is if there is one, then (fandom) AUs from there. And then I have my side OCs that should have verses of their own, I think I made verse tree lmao.
If you don’t want your blog/muse/ships/threads shown/mentioned on these kind of tracking posts, or if you want to drop a muse/ship, please let me know and I will remove them, thanks!

@ophanem this is gonna be a rather long post because god do I have a lot for the vigilante Kokichi AU. (also. send me/@me in a post with your phantom thief Kokichi AU. i need it.)
anyways here we go:
so basically this whole AU started when I texted my friend this:
“Shuichi: You're the hero DICE who's been fighting off all these villains this past month?!!
Kokichi: Me? A hero? That's crazy, you know me, if I was anything I would be the villain.
Shuichi: Kokichi we literally just caught you pulling DICE's mask out of your backpack.
Kokichi: ~Putting the mask back into the backpack~ You didn't see anything.
Kiibo: Um, I'm pretty sure we did.
Or, the AU where the class discovers their troublemaking classmate is also the vigilante superhero that's been saving their asses for the past month or so.”
and then things just got wild from there.
- The reason Kokichi’s superhero name is DICE is because before he gave the public a name, he was caught doing something rather odd while in his hero outfit, and a reporter went to ask him what he was doing, and he cut them off by saying “Don’t I can’t explain.” and the public found that hilairious, so it became a town meme, which then became an abbreviation, which the public then decided was his name.
- Kokichi’s powers are telekinisis and illusions. (he can make stuff float and also make it seem like something’s there when it’s not. he uses these powers to make it seem like he has more powers, since he can use telekinisis to make it look like he’s really strong and can fly, and he can use illusions to make it seem like he can duplicate)
- Literally everyone in the class gets saved by DICE at least once before they find out. (Kaito is the last person in the class to actually meet DICE by the way, because Kaito likes heroes so the fact that he’s the last to encounter him is irony or something)
- The whole class forms a “who is DICE” investigation group after he saves all of them. note “whole” class. Kokichi is a part of this group. (He spends half the time messing with them and the other half diverting Shuichi’s suspicions)
- After they find out the meetings continue to avoid suspicion from the other classes but the meetings kinda turn into “Kokichi we saw you get punched by a villain on live television we know you're not okay now sit down so we can treat your injuries” and “did i ever tell you guys about that one time a villain nearly killed me with ketchup” “how does one almost get murdered via a tomato sauce” “well Keyboy for 1 its called ketchup and 2 a villain knocks an entire shelf of it on top of you. With all the ketchup everywhere looking like blood im 90% sure the store employees thought i was dead”
- “Since we now know that you are DICE we can finally ask you this question. Did you, or did you not, dab in the middle of a battle.”
- Everyone lives in the student dorms.
- Before and after they knew he was DICE, Kokichi used his powers to make them think the dorms were haunted. (the only person who still believes they’re haunted after the reveal is Kaito)
- Kokichi uses his powers of illusion to make himself look taller as DICE
(i kind of went downhill into memes and humor after this)
- The Superhero Dorm RulesTM (theirs a lot of them so I’m gonna make a seperate post for those
- A superhero? In our dorm? It’s far more likely than you think.
- The only people outside of the class who know (and inevitably join the “who is DICE/DICE Secret Club”) are Naegi, Kirigiri, Nagito, Hajime, Chiaki, and Izuru
- oh by the way Izuru and Hajime share a body in this AU
- (i kind of fell down an Izuru hole after having this realization so there is. a lot with him. d. do you know who Izuru is. if not I’m really sorry for kinda spoiling you.)
- Hajime was the last person to find out.
- Which is hilairious considering him and Izuru share a body (and Izuru was one of the first to figure it out. saw Kokichi sneaking in late one night.)
- Kokichi: ~quietly sneaking in at 1 am after a night of superheroing and turns on the light~
Izuru: ~calmly sitting at the table, sipping tea~
Kokichi: ~screams and telekinetically throws chair~ WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE
Izuru: ~calmly dodges chair~ your classmates requested i make sure you were not injured when you returned, as i normally stay up late anyway. Its quite a boring job but i was forced into it.
- no one knows Izuru and Hajime share a body at first which leads to shenaingains but eventually they figure it out
- The DICE Secret Club has a party. and someone brings alchohol. things devolve rather quickly.
- Kokichi accidentally explodes the dorm microwave with his powers
- Naegi trips and falls on top of a villain, allowing DICE to save the day
(I have a list of chapter concepts because I originally planned on turning this into a fic hold on let me give you the highlights. most of them are rather tropey tho.(all set after the discovery))
- The struggles of the class covering for Kokichi when he leaves to go fight
- A chapter where they pull an “I am Spartacus” thing and the whole class dresses up as DICE to help him out
- “Kokichi does not need a therapist” (chapter 35)
- How to explain why DICE is sleeping on the couch in your dorm to people from other classes (this is the part one of the chapter where the other 6 find out/reveal they know)
- Shuichi decks a villain
- “Mind Control” (chapter 70)
- Camping gone wrong (chapter 65) and Camping gone horribly wrong (chapter 66)
- “Hug a hero day”
- Kokichi gets stuck in a time loop
- “that one time Kokichi almost died”
- “Let’s reenact the Titanic” (in terms of the boat sinking)
and that’s all I really have right now, I’m gonna post the Dorm Rules in a second

A/N: I feel like Kaede would have shared the SHSL Hope title if she was in dr1. Okay but if Kirigiri was in v3 she wouldn’t do a half-ass detective investigation. She’d test out traps and know a rigged game when she sees one. SPOILERS on the mastermind.
Other switch AUs: luckster | togami | naegi | troublemaker | detective | maid | liar | protagonist dr1/sdr2 | protagonist dr1/ndrv3 | protagonist sdr2/ndrv3 | heroine dr1/ndrv3 | heroine sdr2/ndrv3 | fem protag dr:ae/ndrv3 | mastermind
Heroine in the Wrong Game - Kaede and Kyouko
“We’re going to be alright. If we all just work together, I’m sure that we can get through this!”
She says this for the nth time already. She’ll say it as many times as she needs to. Sure it took them a few trials and more dead bodies than one would have liked, but she thinks that maybe she’s finally getting through them.
“Might I remind you that one of us is the killer? I don’t care if you peasants start holding hands but do not include me in your incompetent schemes.” Byakuya brushed her off just like he always did whenever she brought up cooperation.
“Geez, would it kill you to get off your high horse for once!” Kaede huffed at him.
“How dare you t-talk back to Master Byakuya, you… y-you bitch!” Touko yelled the insult with surprising volume especially on the last word.
“Bitch?!” Kaede was offended but she knew better than to engage in a pointless verbal warfare with the writer. She sighed. “I really shouldn’t be the one you’re shouting at. You could at least hear me out first.”
“Don’t worry, Kaede-chin! I’m placing my bets on you! My fortunes say that you’re on the right track. I’ll take the payment in cash later!” Hagakure gave her a thumbs up.
“Are you extorting money from me in exchange for your support?” Kaede asked disbelievingly. She tries not to think about the fact that his fortunes are only correct 30% of the time and how those aren’t exactly great odds.
“I don’t know… Our friends just keep on dying. Worse is that we just keep on finding out a friend who’s betrayed us every time. I don’t think what we do makes any difference.” Asahina admiited hopelessly.
“You’ve got that wrong!” Kaede shouted in protest. But despite her loud yell, her next sentence is soft and comforting. “I know. It’s frustrating and sad and heartbreaking finding corpses of our friends and… finding out that they were murdered by… our friends too. But we can’t just let it end here. If we did then that would mean that we lost. Haven’t we already lost enough? I don’t want us to lose any more.”
“I agree. It’s too early to give up. I know we’ve been fighting for so long now but just because we haven’t won yet doesn’t mean we already lost.” Makoto seconded her speech with one of his own.  "We can’t lose hope. As long as we hold onto the hope that we can still get out of this together, we’ll be fine. I just know it!“
"Wow, you’re really great at this motivational thing. If I didn’t know better, I would’ve said it was your talent.” Kaede stared at him in awe and respect.
“Well, optimism is my one redeeming quality.” Makoto sheepishly scratched his head at the sudden attention. “Your words honestly touched me too. That’s why I want to support you with all I’ve got. I’m sure that if you hold on to those words, to that hope, everyone else will eventually listen to you too!”
Kaede’s still working on getting her classmates together but she thinks she’s getting there. One person at a time.
“Alright, team! We can do this! We have the enemy outnumbered!”
Meanwhile, in another class…
“We’re not voting.”
She says it so suddenly and with so much authority that it has the whole class uncharacteristically quiet.
“Nyeh? What do you mean, we’re not voting?” Himiko although being the slowest among them, was surprisingly quick on the uptake. It must have been the shock.
“Exactly what it means.” Kyouko calmly confirmed.
“Gonta is confused. Don’t we need to vote?” Gonta asked, scratching his head in thought.
“We were TOLD that we need to vote,” Kyouko clarified. “There is however, no real reason for us to vote immediately other than a time limit ill-imposed on us.”
“So what? Are you telling us to just die all because you thought we could get away with not voting? Why the hell should we listen to Kyoucum here?” Miu loudly expressed her concerns with all the unnecessary insults.
“I’m telling you not to vote because this is a trap.” Kyouko narrowed her eyes. “Clearly, not all of the mysteries have been solved yet and we’re already asked to vote. Doesn’t that seem suspicious to you?”
“Does it matter? We already figured out that it was Shuichi who did it.” Maki countered, eager to just get this over with.
“No, we didn’t figure out anything concrete. He’s only the suspect not the culprit.” Kyouko corrected her. “We have yet to confirm if his trap did in fact work.”
“But there’s no other way that Rantaro could have been killed, right?” Kirumi asked in an effort to further the discussion.
“Not necessarily. I have a theory…” Kyouko paused, placing a hand on her chin in thought. “I would like to discuss it with all of you first before we finalized our votes.”
“Listen, I know you two are buddies because you’re both detectives but there’s a limit as to how much you should protect your friends…” Ryoma warned her darkly.
“It’s precisely because I’m a detective that I can’t let this slide so easily.” Kyouko counters vehemently. “Jumping to conclusions without irrefutable evidence is just sloppy work. Whether or not Shuichi is my friend is irrelevant. I am a detective first and foremost, and I am here to solve ALL mysteries.”
“That’s enough, Kyouko.” Shuichi who has been quiet all this time, finally spoke up. His hand was trembling as it clutched his hat. “I’ve… I’ve already accepted my crime. There’s no need to prolong the inevitable. Just vote for me… and all of you can survive.”
“…” Kyouko just stared at him. Disappointed. She let out an audible sigh. “And you call yourself a detective?”
“I… Does it matter anymore?” Shuichi sadly smiled. “You’re clearly a better detective than I am, Kyouko. If it’s you, I’m sure the whole class would be fine even with me gone.”
“…If you have nothing better to contribute then I suggest you just observe. You should know better than to just rely on confessions without any concrete proof.” Kyouko pointed out. “I don’t care which of us is the better detective. As long as you also hold the title, I suggest you stop acting like a victim and start acting like a detective.”
“As expected of Kyouko-san! Between her and the degenerate male, she is clearly the more superior detective!” Tenko squealed.
“While it does not wound me to hear your support, I would like to keep this strictly professional.” Kyouko brushed a few locks behind her ear, hiding her embarrassment. “Any opinions of either of our work ethics should be decided only after we’ve proven ourselves in this trial.”
“Kukuku… How beautiful! Spoken like a true detective! You have truly risen to your role! It fills me to the brim with excitement thinking of just what is the solution to this mystery you so desire to earnestly solve!” Korekiyo laughed.
“…Let’s move along.” Kyouko did not want to humor him.
“Nyahaha! Atua has a question! See, Angie has been thinking this whole time… Isn’t it strange? Isn’t it strange? Angie said it twice for effect haha! How come we get to have two detectives hmmmm?” Angie asked with a coy smile.
“That’s… actually a good question.” Kyouko doesn’t deny it even if it brings the heat to her. “There is no necessity to have a duplicate in terms of talent. This redundancy has been bothering me ever since I learned of what my true talent is.”
“Yeah, usually getting doubles in characters counts as lazy writing but apparently it doesn’t count if one of them is a fan favorite.” Tsumugi casually drops.
“Who cares if there are two detectives? They’re different people anyways so there shouldn’t be a problem.” Kaito innocently reasoned.
“No, that’s wrong.” Kyouko objected. “There’s nothing inherently wrong or suspicious with having two detectives gathered however… given our circumstances, it should have been obvious that we were all selected to have unique talents. And yet, we have two people with the same talent. For what reason?”
“Ah, but wasn’t your title originally SHSL ???, Kyouko? You couldn’t remember your talent like Rantaro but you eventually figured it out during his body’s investigation.” Kiibo brought up.
“That’s another mystery. Two people who can’t remember their talent. We may never know what Rantaro’s talent was but mine has been revealed to be exactly the same as Shuichi’s.” Kyouko bit the inside of her cheek in frustration. “There are so many redundancies to ignore.”
“You’re thinking too hard on this, Miss Detective! There’s obviously a simple solution to this!” Kokichi tutted and then smiled sweetly. “And that is… You’re lyiiiiing!”
“…Would you care to explain your theory?” Kyouko encouraged him, unfazed by the accusation.
“You keep pointing out all these weird character points but if you look at the source, they’re all about you! Who’s to say that you really can’t remember what your talent is? Maybe you just faked that story once you heard our beloved Rantaro introduce himself as not remembering his. Who’s to say that your real talent is at being a detective? Maybe you’re just that good at shadowing what our poor Shuichi does. See, you say it’s weird but really, it’s not. You’ve just been lying to us! And I hate liars!”
“Well that was… certainly less farfetched than most of your lies.” Kyouko admitted that much. “But that just now was a lie too, isn’t it? You don’t really believe I’m lying.”
“Awww, you seriously are better than Shuu-chan.” Kokichi pouted but she could see through his feigned disappointment. “Welp! Guess there’s no use in you pretending anymore either. Now that we’ve cleared up your suspicion, Kyou-chan, I think it’s safe to start pointing fingers at the mastermind!”
“M-Mastermind?” Shuichi looked on with horror. “But the trap failed! It didn’t kill the mastermind, it only killed Rantaro instead!”
“Again, do not let me repeat this more than necessary. While it is unfortunate that Rantaro has been killed, it has yet to be confirmed that it was your shot put ball that did it.” Kyouko stared at Shuichi with an unreadable expression. “You set up the trap to lure the mastermind, right? Your original goal was to kill them after. In a way, the trap had only been fifty percent effective.”
“Fifty percent?” Shuichi’s eyes widened in shock. “The mastermind is obviously not dead since we’re having a trial so… does that mean… you really did figure out who?”
“Yes, I’ve had my list of suspects but after enough evidence has been presented in this trial, I have narrowed it down to one.” Kyouko crossed her arms. “There’s still a possibility that my theory is wrong but that is why this trial exists. That’s all the more reason we should not vote and continue discussing instead.”
“Nishishi! Don’t keep us waiting in suspense, Kyou-chan!” Kokichi cheerfully interjects. “Tell us already who’s the sicko that had us trapped in this stupid killing game!”
“Very well. Given all the evidence at hand, there is a concerning possibility that the mastermind is none other than…” Kyouko scans the trial room until her eyes land on a particular someone. “Tsumugi Shirogane.”
“Eh?”
“WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?”
“Tsumugi’s whereabouts during the murder had been the most suspicious. That alone shouldn’t have been sufficient but her actions during the whole trial had led me to believe that she has been steering this trial to serve a goal that’s more than just our survival.” Kyouko narrowed her eyes at the now quiet supposedly plain girl. “Isn’t that right, Tsumugi?”
“Oh, dear… It’s only the first trial and we already have a mastermind reveal…” Tsumugi sighed, resigned to this lazy writing. “This is what we get when we let the fans choose a comeback character.”
Kyouko casually flips her hair.
“It doesn’t matter what kind of mystery you throw. I’ll solve them all.”
The two heroines continued to struggle with trials of their own and unbeknownst to them that they were in the wrong class.

“Hey, Maki Roll!” “Hey, Shuichi!”
“...What are you two up to now?”
“Whaddaya mean by that!? We just wanted—” “—to see how our favourite sidekicks are doing!”
“I still can’t believe there’s two of you. And do you really have to finish each other’s sentences like that?”
““Of course!””
“...And talk in unison, too...”
---
@trainingtrioweek Day 6: AU
I couldn’t resist using this opportunity to draw (the happiest ending of) my recent Duplicate Kaito AU. A lot of people seemed to like those posts of mine, and, heck, I wanted to see Kaito and Kaito double-teaming their sidekicks, too.
For those unfamiliar: despite the different body, that is still every bit the same Kaito there. He has exactly the same personality and memories (just with some bonus existential issues that he’s mostly worked out at this point). It’s Kaito, but TWICE.
(some additional very important lore about this AU beneath the cut)
I based New Kaito’s design off a couple of Kaito’s beta designs. He has this body, and then he styled his hair to look like in this one (and also grew a goatee).
See, with his different and more bushy and wavy hair, New Kaito could never quite match Kaito Prime’s up-and-down-spiking “quasar” hairstyle and get it to look as good. So naturally, rather than let him feel inferior, Kaito Prime suggested he could do something totally different with it, something that would work better with his type of hair. What if he gelled just the ends and swirled them around to make his whole head look like a galaxy? That’d be awesome, right? That’s something that Kaito Prime couldn’t ever hope to pull off nearly as well with his hair - plus, it's the perfect complement to his quasar!
This’d also then form the basis of the individual nicknames they get to distinguish them, since their hairstyles are one of the only meaningfully different things about them. After showing off New Kaito’s new hairstyle to their sidekicks, they declare that from now on, while they still each want to be called just “Kaito” whenever possible, if anyone needs to make it clear which Kaito they're talking about or to, they can call them - pause for dramatic effect - Galaxy Kaito and Quasar Kaito!
Shuichi and Maki stare at them blankly. “What’s a quasar?”
"And how does this have anything to do with your hair?"
The Kaitos are aghast. Their sidekicks didn’t already know this? Well, time to educate them!
And so they launch into a doubly-enthusiastic explanation of galaxies and quasars, getting way more in-depth and technical than they need to in a positive feedback loop of space geekery, interrupting each other and finishing each other’s sentences even more than usual because they’re both so excited to talk about this!
...At no point do they properly explain how Galaxy Kaito’s hair looks like a galaxy, much less how Quasar Kaito’s hair is meant to look like a quasar. In fact, they probably begin to suggest different versions of the nicknames that better encapsulate the specific technical parts of a galaxy or a quasar that their hairstyles are supposed to represent, because in their excitement they’ve kind of forgotten that they’re meant to just be coming up with an easy-to-remember way to distinguish them.
All the while, Maki and Shuichi just sort of keep staring, amused at seeing their friends (friend?) being so ridiculous and passionate, but also vaguely wondering, are they going to give this unnecessarily detailed explanation to everyone they meet who needs to know what names to use for them?
Eventually, Maki puts her foot down.
“Shut up for a second and listen. You’re Swirly Kaito, you’re Pointy Kaito. There. Sorted.”
The Kaitos are very indignant - that’s far too ordinary and not nearly as grandiose and space-themed as their ideas! - but despite their protests, those names stick.
  ---
(bonus: I couldn't help but wonder exactly what Swirly Kaito's hair looked like when he was trying to make it pointy, so I went and drew it...
Tumblr media
(and it... actually looks more reasonable than I was expecting, as Wild Anime Hairstyles go? Like, it's a perfectly fine hairstyle on its own. But despite his best efforts, it's very much not the hairstyle Pointy Kaito has, so it's probably still better for Swirly Kaito to take his hair in a whole new direction rather than keeping this style and constantly feeling like he's not quite what he's trying to be.)

NDRV3 SUPERHERO AU
@akikido and @rantaroamamikun helped a bit with this one!
Angie Yonaga
Angie can create drawings in the air that come to life
She doesn’t use tools or a canvas, she can just draw in the air with her fingers
And then the little “minions” of whatever she chooses to draw come to life and help her!
Drawing angels is her favorite
Superhero name: Angelica
Gonta Gokuhara
He can emulate the power of any bug he chooses
For example, an ant can lift up to 1000 times their own weight, so he can lift 1000 times his own weight when he so chooses
He can only emulate one specific power at a time
However, his vast knowledge and understanding of bugs allows him to switch at the drop of a hat
He’s mainly a hero who rescues others from disasters and accidents
Superhero name: Gentleman (Spelled this way but often pronounced “Gentle man”).
Himiko Yumeno
She can manipulate the elements, à la Avatar style
This is why she is known for being able to use magic
She uses a ‘wand’, which is just an elemental-resistant rod to help conduct where everything goes
Unlike Avatar, she doesn’t use her whole body to fight and mainly ‘conducts’ the elements with her hands
Superhero name: The Sorceress
Kaede Akamatsu
She has rhythmic premonition
She can foresee the rhythm of the world’s movements and uses that power to work around her opponent
She is also able to send sound waves through her fingertips that can cause damage
She teams up with Amami and Saihara, and she’s the type to strike the finishing blow
She’s one of the most popular heroes, especially because she talks about working together and never giving up!
Superhero name: Rhythmatsu
Kaito Momota
He can manipulate gravity
In this way he can make himself float and jump impossibly high/far
He can also add gravity to an opponent to ground them or immobilize them entirely
He keeps running into Maki on jobs and eventually teams up with her
Superhero name: Spaceman Momota
Kiibo
He was built to be the ultimate hero, but after an accident it was decided that he should grow and learn with humans
Nowadays, he’s become a kind of duo with Ouma, and he’s not exactly thrilled about it
But deep down he somehow manages to have fun while on missions
His body is equipped with laser guns and missiles, and he can fly
Superhero name: Kiibot
Kirumi Toujou
Toujou has the power of duplication
She can create multiple versions of herself in an instant, and her “doubles” can fight just as well as she can
She’s known for being quick and efficient
As well as for perfectly completeing every assignment she accepts.
Superhero name: Twoujo
Kokichi Ouma
Ouma has hypnotic powers
He can use his voice or even just his eyes to hypnotize people
Usually he uses this power for pranks, but he also convinces bad guys to let go of hostages, turn themselves in, etc.
He’s in trouble if they manage to block his voice and look away from his face, though, so he prefers to team up with a classmate while going on missions (usually Kiibo)
It’s rumored that he actually runs a supervillain crime syndicate, but no one really knows if that’’s true
Superhero name: Dice
Korekiyo Shinguuji
Shinguuji is able to speak to spirits and astral project
He receives specialized jobs because of his powers
Most of the time, though, he just communicates with spirits to learn more about humans and the past
Kids are scared of him because of how he looks
But on the flipside, he intimidates plenty of villains
Superhero name: Shin
Maki Harukawa
Maki can absorb other people’s powers
She’s one of the most powerful and ruthless heroes still active
She ends up teaming up with Momota for some reason
She pretends she hates it, but really she’s glad he’s there to keep her from going to far or forgetting who she is
Once defeated an entire syndicate without sustaining any injuries
Superhero name: Harumaki
Miu Iruma
Iruma has the power to melt things at fast rates
She doesn’t use it in battles very much; instead, she uses it to create high tech gear that she can use against villains
Of course, she invents everything herself
She also revels in melting her opponent’s armor from time to time
Superhero name: Lady Deliquescense
Ryouma Hoshi
He has lightning-fast reflexes
Good luck landing a hit on him, because all he needs is a second and he’s gone
He’s trained himself to have pretty accurate aim as well
Once, he went too far in stopping a supervillain...
Ever since, he hasn’t been on a single job, and tried to turn himself in to the police
Superhero name: Blue Skull
Rantarou Amami
He can read minds and use a bit of telekinesis
When he and Kaede work together, the villain doesn’t stand a chance
Actually, he often teams up with Saihara and Kaede, and the three of them make up the most powerful trio of heroes still active
Amami specializes in strategizing and info collection
He comes up with plans on the spot for their team to win fights and avoid causalities
Superhero name: Emerald Mask
Shuuichi Saihara
He can pass through solid objects and negate the powers of others
If he’s touching another person, he can pull them through objects as well
His negation doesn’t last too long, but he trains every day to increase the time he can keep it up
More often than not, he is the one to save civilians in surrounding areas or back up the other two
But there’s nothing he’d rather do than protect his friends
He didn’t know what to name himself, so Amami gave him his hero name and it stuck.
Superhero name: Slyhara
Tenko Chabashira
Tenko has superhuman strength/senses and is able to generate force fields
She usually acts as Himiko’s shield, and the two of them are an unofficial duo
She is especially harsh while fighting a male villain
She has been trained in martial arts as well, so she tries to teach Himiko some of what she knows
Superhero name: OTTenko (”Oh Tee Tenko”)
Tsumugi Shirogane
She can manipulate different materials’ properties by simply touching them
In this way, she can transform normal clothes into armor and vice versa, manipulate her hair to be able to stretch and harden, and other such things
Her costume changes nearly every single day
Often, she uses her power to imitate her favorite characters and their outfits
Because she “manipulates materials and her own personality” for her “cosplay outfits”, she is known as...
Superhero name: Manipulator

Note
Hiiii your content made me love Kaito so much I can't stop thinking bout him! Recently I've been thinking of a silly fun scenario where all your Kaito's met; as in, Shadow Kaito, quasar and galaxy Kaito's, still a hero kaito, all the Kaito's from your scenarios (heck, even a dead ghost kaito in there for the fun) just, to,, get some more brain-rotting Kaito content. Have a nice day!
Oh boy, that sure would be a lot of Kaitos!
Thing is, they would all fundamentally still be just Kaito over and over again, only with varying amounts of trauma and progress with his issues. And naturally, the Kaitos who are more on top of their issues would immediately seek out the ones who aren't and tell them that showing weakness doesn't make them less of a hero, so they'd all get caught up in no time. It'd end up as pretty much the same thing as the duplicate Kaito scenario, except oh god there's even more of him now.
The only one who would be any significantly different as a person would be Shadow Kaito, who still is Kaito, but specifically only the suppressed (and therefore weaker) parts of him. He would very quickly be adopted as a sidekick by every other Kaito there, of course.
(Also, unless all the other Kaitos' ghost phobias also magically vanished upon meeting a ghost of himself, the ghost Kaito would have to just... leave. That'd be rather unfair for him.)
My brain tends to prefer AU scenarios to have some reasonable basis behind how their situation could be happening in order to think about them in much more detail than these very general thoughts, though. So I'll leave things at that. But I do appreciate the sentiment behind the ask - it made me smile!
