Ultraman made me want to revive my Ultrawoman Nova setting so I did and made a whole doc about it (which I might show off if people want to see that). Knowing me it turned into a 70,000 word worldbuilding document with a ton of kaiju and ultra biology, and it’s basically what I did for kaijune this year. I’m still actively adding to it btw!

So I decided to draw some ultra kaiju and how they’d look in my silly fanfic.

Bemular as a space faring abelisaur

Gomess as a badger-like dinocephalian

Goldon as a squat burrowing dicraeosaurid

And Banila and Aboras as a terrestrial mesoskeletal high browsing conodont and terrestrial predatory dunkle relative!

I tried drawing Nova herself but I wasn’t satisfied with it even though it was accurate to my version of ultra anatomy. I guess I’m just not good at designing ultras.

The Hollow Kingdom trilogy is a series I haven't reread in a long time, but still remember very fondly. It riffs on things like goblin and elf folklore, mythology and fairy tale (Persephone, Beauty and the Beast), and even the proper manners of Regency fiction in ways that feel comfortingly familiar, but also inventive and unusual. And it blends big emotional themes at times with lightness and very sharp humor.

I was very into it around 2005-07ish, and this was always my favorite fan art, the newly married and miserable Kate having tea with her very pleased goblin husband Marak, attended upon by one of Marak's faithful servants. I ended up sharing it with author Clare B Dunkle (she encouraged fans sharing art back in 2007 -- I don't know if she still does), and she sent me the nicest comment about it:

I especially like the picture of Kate having tea with Marak. There's a certain look to Marak's face in your drawing that exists in his image in my mind as well. I can't quite describe it (so much for being a writer!), but it's something to do with his bony cheeks, his smug expression, and his eyes. And Marak's little valet is so CUTE!

All these years later, I'm still so touched when I read that.

Holocaust - Theresienstadt

About 15,000 children were interned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp from 1941 to 1945. All of these children perished in the various extermination camps - only with a few exceptions. After visiting the concentration camp, we went to a museum that had pictures and texts of these children on display. Plain walls and dark cells often don't say much - but these drawings and texts made the suffering and hopelessness tangible and perceptible for me. Hard to bear that hardly any of those children were allowed to grow up. I left the museum feeling ashamed and thoughtful that day.

The Fear

A new horror is sweeping through our ghetto, threatens with evil disease great and small.

Ungefähr 15000 Kinder waren im KZ Theresienstadt von 1941 bis 1945 interniert. Alle diese Kinder kamen in den diversen Vernichtungslagern um - bis auf wenige Ausnahmen. Nach dem Besuch des KZ suchten wir ein Museum auf, dass Bilder und Texte dieser Kinder ausgestellt hatte. Schlichte Mauern und dunkle Zellen sagen oft nicht viel aus - aber diese Zeichnungen und Texte machten das Leid und die Hoffnungslosigkeit für mich greifbar und nachfühlbar. Kaum zu ertragen, dass kaum eines jener Kinder erwachsen werden durfte. Ich verliess das Museum beschämt und nachdenklich an jenem Tag.

Die Angst

Durch unser Getto zieht ein neuer Schrecken, bedroht mit böser Krankheit gross und klein.

Man sieht den Tod die Sense vor sich strecken, so lechzt nach Opfern er in arger Pein.

Den Vätern schlägt das Herz im Leib geschwinder,voll Trauer hüll´n die Mütter ein ihr Haupt, die Typhusotter würgt ihnen die Kinder zu Tod, bevor sie es geglaubt.

Ich bin noch da, bin noch ein lebend Wesen, indes die Freundin schon im Jenseits weilt, ich weiß nicht, ob´s nicht besser wär´ gewesen, hätt mich der Tod mit ihr zugleich ereilt.
