Ultraman made me want to revive my Ultrawoman Nova setting so I did and made a whole doc about it (which I might show off if people want to see that). Knowing me it turned into a 70,000 word worldbuilding document with a ton of kaiju and ultra biology, and it’s basically what I did for kaijune this year. I’m still actively adding to it btw!

So I decided to draw some ultra kaiju and how they’d look in my silly fanfic.

Bemular as a space faring abelisaur

Gomess as a badger-like dinocephalian

Goldon as a squat burrowing dicraeosaurid

And Banila and Aboras as a terrestrial mesoskeletal high browsing conodont and terrestrial predatory dunkle relative!

I tried drawing Nova herself but I wasn’t satisfied with it even though it was accurate to my version of ultra anatomy. I guess I’m just not good at designing ultras.

The Hollow Kingdom trilogy is a series I haven't reread in a long time, but still remember very fondly. It riffs on things like goblin and elf folklore, mythology and fairy tale (Persephone, Beauty and the Beast), and even the proper manners of Regency fiction in ways that feel comfortingly familiar, but also inventive and unusual. And it blends big emotional themes at times with lightness and very sharp humor.

I was very into it around 2005-07ish, and this was always my favorite fan art, the newly married and miserable Kate having tea with her very pleased goblin husband Marak, attended upon by one of Marak's faithful servants. I ended up sharing it with author Clare B Dunkle (she encouraged fans sharing art back in 2007 -- I don't know if she still does), and she sent me the nicest comment about it:

I especially like the picture of Kate having tea with Marak. There's a certain look to Marak's face in your drawing that exists in his image in my mind as well. I can't quite describe it (so much for being a writer!), but it's something to do with his bony cheeks, his smug expression, and his eyes. And Marak's little valet is so CUTE!

All these years later, I'm still so touched when I read that.

Yep, buildings and all for game design. Draw #3: Dunkle Pest Lobby (Church)

Yep, two more to go until it's over for these sketches.

So this whole doodle/drawing is supposed to be a lobby map for another game I'm creating. As shown, there are trees in the background, some plants on the steps, two buildings (a candy shop on the left with a library on the right), a few street lights, a little circle thing for some path thing (I don't really know how to explain it), and the main thing in the drawing, the church.

Now, I was testing perspective and stuff while drawing this a long time ago (since I got motivation to work on these chaotic things again, I love them either way lol).

The church is composed of large double doors (like those humongous, gigantically huge ones), a roman numeral clock, a bell tower, and large stained glass windows (I wanted to make a cool design but got lazy so I drew crosses instead), and there are vines and orchids growing around the door and two windows.

I think a lot of what people might consider infantilization is less patronization and more adoration; drawing them cutely and calling them the scrunkle dunkle eeby deeby or whatever isn't supposed to be belittling I don't think, it's calling them cute because you think them cute, not because you think they're a literal infant or they're below you.

woobification mostly only takes place when this replaces the perception of the character, and for the most part, I think the community is pretty good at respecting the personality and story of their favourite character (except for one that really sticks out)

now granted, what is effectively babytalk could be considered infantilization and demeaning in on itself, but I think that's an entire other conversation

but my honest two cents on the cathal age discussion thing is that people are way too nervous about infantilization and i think it's perfectly fine to see him as an older teen/early 20s. (surprise, i do.)

speaking as someone who has been infantilized IRL for disability reasons, infantilization isn't... "oh i see [x] as younger", it's treating [x] like they inherently can't do things that their peers can - being patronizing to them.

it's fine to see differently - just be excellent to each other, ok?
