The Heart Killers | Fadel & Style | Episode 7

We are just right back to square one, but no sweat off Style's brow.

So I was pondering just why I like Style so much and why his specific "failings" and imperfections are so compelling to me - and I think it's because all the other main characters are flawed in ways that are obvious but not very relatable.

Fadel and Bison are murders. Regardless of their motivations and how much they buy into Mama Lilly's propaganda, they still have taken lives and do so with little remorse. Kant is actively lying to, manipulating and taking advantage of Bison and Style (his supposed best friend) for his own ends with seemingly very little compunction. Yes, he's got his reasons; but still.

And then you have Style. His major flaw is that he is thoughtless and selfish and he doesn't seem to understand how to leash in his impulsive desires. This means he constantly ignores or crosses Fadel's boundaries to the point that, by the end of episode 3, is genuinely hurtful. All the same, compared to the things Fadel, Bison, and Kant have done and are still doing (reminder: ep 3 opened with another murder/assassination), this is relatively tame.

But that's precisely why I think people are being so harsh to him vs the other characters. Many of us have felt like the victim of someone like this because it's so common and so we relate to Fadel's frustration and then hurt and anger, and that makes Style actions feel painful in a way that’s personal. Few of us have been victims of the level of violence or manipulation that Fadel and Bison and Kant are dishing out.

Yet that's precisely why I like Style - he's imperfect in ways that add realistic complexity to his character. Why would we expect a character who is bold, brash, and impulsive to also be thoughtful and considerate?? He acts before he can think about things: that's the whole point of his character. He juxtaposes Fadel perfectly because Fadel "plans everything down from years, months, weeks to days" and Style hasn't acted with more than 8 seconds of forethought in his life. It’s part of what makes him perfect for Kant's plan in the first place.

But then, but THEN once Style begins interacting with Fadel, we start to get moments when Style seems to still and become intensely focused - most notably:

Right after the confrontation in the locker rooms (sadly I don't think anyone's gif'ed this yet, so screenshots it is!)...

…after his conversation with Bison about Fadel…

…and when he watches Fadel beat 3 guys up with ease.

We are watching Style find reasons to grow. We are seeing moments when he’s catching himself, slowing down, thinking, wondering. And while it initially starts with curiosity, he so quickly falls into fascination and obsession, and by the end of episode 3 it’s clear he wants more. It's not just about understanding Fadel anymore, Style wants to have him for himself. And if he's going to be something meaningful to Fadel he’s going to have to mature.

This is why I find Style so interesting and so fun to watch. He’s loud, in your face, and obnoxious so the layers aren’t as obvious. We think there’s nothing more there, but his complexity is deceptively hidden while they’re ironically much clearer in the quiet characters like Fadel and Kant.

And I don't think it's unreasonable to expect this growth. Style is written TO HAVE ROOM TO GROW. And, yes, I do think Style is going to rise gloriously to the challenge. We already have hints that this is precisely where the narrative means to take him:

He’s by no means perfect but that gives him space to have a hell of a character arc and I, for one, can’t wait for it. 🙌

Hi. Please write something where after that sauna incident Style walks in on Fadel pleasing himself in a dark corner or whatever in that dark locker room. Since Style caused the problem in the first place, he decides from the kindness of his heart to help out and "give Fadel a hand".

honestly this is what I thought would happen in the show after the sauna moment☺️ we got that beautiful moment at the end of the episode anyway, but I still want this scenario as well 😁thanks in advance✌️

Joylada gang and what part of the entertainment industry I think they'd be best in if they could only do one

Joong: Singer

Of all the Joylada boys, I personally love Joong's voice the most. It's strong, stable, and he has a style of singing where he tweaks any song he's singing just a little bit to make it his own, and it always sounds so good. I also really like his stage presence, and he can dance while singing, so I think he'd really thrive in a singer/idol position. (He once was part of a boyband too right? I'm not surprised, he's talented)

Dunk: Influencer

I think Dunk is the most active on social media of all the Joylada boys, and his content really isn't bad at all. He loves interacting with fans, and posting pictures and vlogs. He also has a really happy, bright public personality and can get along with almost everyone. I think if he was forced to only pick one, he would do well working as a youtuber/content creator, like Kayavine or p'Mook. Imagine how fun all his collabs with other people would be to watch

Pond: Variety show host

Dancer may have been the obvious choice, but one of my favourite things about Pond is simply his personality. He's charismatic, and so funny without even trying (but maybe that's cus his humour is my kind of humour). To put it simply, he's entertaining, just by being himself. Now, this would sound like he would be good as an influencer right? But there's just a little something missing that would make that the best role for him, not to mention that he has said that talking to the camera alone makes him shy. So I think something more scripted, with a partner possibly, would be good. We've seen him do it before, with his first series with Bimbeam and then LBW with phuwin, he could totally be a host. Imagine him being one of the main hosts of school rangers y'all

Phuwin: Actor

If I'm not wrong, Phuwin has been in this industry the longest out of all of them, despite being the youngest. I mean, 7 years in gmmtv and he's only 20 now? Crazy. He's had so much experience already, he can be considered a senior actor in the company despite not actually being a senior. He's quite a versatile actor, go look at his discography and you shall see, and he has the stamina and drive to work on any series that he gets. I have no doubt that he would continue to thrive in the industry for years to come

Neal Stephenson is one of my favorite authors. One of my favorite genres used to be hardcore cyberpunk dystopian sci-fi — then we began living in it. This is not the cyberdystopia I was promised, tbh.

Anyhow — no matter how much I love Stephenson, he can't write an ending to save his life.

Tee Bundit and his screenwriting crew are the Neal Stephensons of Thai BL. This is two for two in a row from him.

Hidden Agenda's ending just kind of ran a race and then abruptly... Happened? Step By Step was the one before this. There was a time skip, you were expected to infer what their lives were like, etc. Maybe it works for some people, and that's great! Not everything is going to work for everyone.

My only other minor complaint is there's a bunch of weird side arcs / plots that don't really serve the main plot (stalker, etc) which could have been easily removed to give us something more in depth with either JengPok or some more JokeZo.

I still really loved the series, I will still recommend it, and was still one of my favorites of this year. I enjoyed nearly every episode.

The characters he and his team create are fully formed humans with their own lives and motivations, even the side characters. We don't even get that with main characters in many dramas.

P'Tee pulled amazing things out of JoongDunk and AouBoom that no other director has been able to. He is so, so talented in many ways. I just need to temper my expectations on the ending of a series as they don't work for me personally.
