We are living in a catastrophe we have never seen before, and my children are shivering with cold and fear.

No words can describe what we are going through, pain has become a part of our lives, and fear surrounds us from every side. The sounds of the wind struggle with the silence of the night, and the warmth of homes has become a distant dream. My children look at me with eyes full of hope, and I am unable to give them the reassurance they deserve.

To those who read my words, we need your prayers, your help, your extended hands in any form. We are human beings, we need safety, warmth, and compassion.

Since the outbreak of the war on October 7, we have been displaced. Then the journey of suffering and separation began, as my children were separated and evacuated from our home without cover or clothes, and from here they became ill. What increased our fatigue was the continuous upbringing due to the different areas to which we were displaced. We were displaced 9 times, and this was very costly. The last time was on August 9 from Hamad City. In addition to that, we live in the winter season in a tent that does not exceed three meters, closed with nylon. It is similar to the atmosphere of strong winds that we have never experienced before. The weather is very cold. Overall, we are living difficult days that no human being can bear. We have no work because of the war and we do not have any kind of money. This is accompanied by a crazy and terrible increase in prices. Although the water is not suitable for drinking, this is the cause of many diseases. The last suffering is that we are outside Hamad without taking our belongings or tents. Now we are searching the ground in the streets and our children and the elderly are suffering. Hikmah postdoc (dan PhD)

Akhir-akhir ini lagi banyak yang nanya dan minta saran PhD, jadi ku harus terpaksa mikir dan refleksi pros and consnya. Sebagai orang yang waktu itu menjadikan PhD sebagai tempat kabur dari kesuraman hidup korporat di Jakarta, I'd say it totally worth my time. Kalo ga PhD mungkin sekarang aku jadi middle management di suatu perusahaan, punya rumah kecil di pinggiran jakarta, pake sepatu Tory Burch dan tas coach plus mobil decentlah (ini melihat karir teman-teman seangkatan yang awal karirnya juga MT ya wk no shade at allll).

PhD bikin aku sadar betapa aku suka sekali fleksibilitas, kerja di korporat yang pake absen sidik jari tuh aku tersiksa banget, padahal perkara sepele ya. And I LOVE doing research. Love having flexibility to spend my time any way I want. BUT it is a lonely journey with lots of aspect you can't control. Kerja di korporat tuh banyak yang udah ada SOPnya, jelas kejarannya dan day to day activitynya udah defined. Research, at least in astronomy, is abstract. No one knows the definite answer so you have to really explore everything and the answer might not what you expected. 1 year project might turn into 3, 5 or even 10. Dan PhD tuh bikin kamu expert di suatu bidang yang niche banget yang di dunia ini yang ngerti banget bidang itu tuh bisa diitung jari, which again is very isolating because very little people can relate or help you.

How is life after PhD? Ga bohong menyelesaikan PhD change me a lottt. I became confidence that I got skills and can navigate my future career. Jelas ada safety cushion. Banyak opportunity yang sebelumnya ga kebayang jadi kebuka, kerja di luar negeri pun jadi relatif lebih mudah.

Doing postdoc is like doing another PhD but with 5x responsibilities. Helping students, helping PI, building your own research projects. Still very flexible, but still lonely. Benefit ok but not the best. Necessary to build more independent research skill and network if you want to stay in academia, or if you still care about the subject and it is still fun. Otherwise, not worth it. Sekarang lagi galau sih jujur mau stay di academia atau out, I still care about the subject and still want to be a professor though. Meskipun move ke industri financial benefitnya lebih banyak tapi trade offnya adalah ya gabisa riset sesuka kamu. Hmm.

Menerima Ketidaksempurnaan

Pertama, aku pikir ini perkara yang mudah. Tapi untuk sebagian besar manusia, ini menjadi momok rasanya.

Sore ini aku meninggikan suara kepada kakakku setelah pagi tadi aku melakukan hal yang sama. Aku tidak mengerti kenapa kakakku suka melakukan hal yang kontradiktif dengan apa yang ia katakan. Aku rasa, apa yang orang-orang maksud dengan denial adalah apa yang ia alami saat ini.

Aku, selalu memahami diriku tidak sempurna, karena lingkungan, karena pola asuh, dan kini aku bukannya memperbaiki ketidaksempurnaan itu, aku lebih kepada mencari solusi untuk tidak harus menunjukkan ketidaksempurnaan itu. Menutupi adalah hal yang berbeda dengan tidak menujukkan. Aku tau ketidaksempurnaan itu ada dan aku mencari ruang atau kegiatan yang tidak memerlukan bagian dari ketidaksempurnaan itu.

Aku menyadari kekuranganku adalah emosi yang meledak. Reaksi yang ditimbulkan seringkali fatal, karena aku memang tidak merusak barang, tapi aku akan menyakiti telinga dan hati oranglain saat mendengar suara tinggi serta kata-kata yang menusuk. Hal ini terjadi karena jika aku memendam sesuatu, justru akan mempengaruhi sentimenku terhadap seseorang itu jika tidak dikeluarkan. Biasanya, aku akan secara pelan mengatakan hal yang membuatku kesal, ketika seseorang itu tidak memahami hal yang menyebalkan itu dan melakukannya lagi disaat aku sedang mencoba berbicara baik-baik, maka di detik itu juga bagai mercon tersulut, duar.

Maka, aku mengantisipasinya untuk berusaha sebelum marah kepada oranglain, aku akan menulisnya seperti ini. ngecooldown dan breakdown isi kepala, tentang apa sebenarnya yang boleh dan tidak boleh aku lakukan kepada seseorang itu.

Aku melakukan hal itu untuk diriku sendiri. Karena dalam hidup, memastikan diri sendiri baik mental dan raga adalah hal yang utama sebelum menyelamatkan orang lain. Kalau tidak begitu, namanya mati konyol. Bukan aku yang mengatakan itu, situasi saat pemadam kebakaran akan memadamkan api dan menyelamatkan korban selalu mengutamakan prinsip itu. Bisa jadi jika ia tidak memakai seluruh safety pada dirinya dan memastikannya kembali, ada seorang anak yang bisa ia tarik keluar agar tidak meninggal karena menghirup karbondioksida begitu banyak. Ada seorang anak sesak nafas yang butuh perawatan, dan pemadam yang harus mendapati luka bakar serta sesak nafas yang sama sehingga mereka berdua butuh perawatan. Namun saat sang pemadam sedang memastikan dirinya aman untuk masuk kedalam api, anak tersebut keburu menghiru lebih banyak asap sehingga tidak bisa diselamatkan. Tapi, sang pemadam yang telah siap masuk kedalam api, bisa mencari lebih jauh orang-orang lain yang terjebak di dalam api untuk diselamatkan. Tubuhnya aman, lebih banyak orang yang akan diselamatkan.

Sehingga seringkali sebelum memulai pekerjaan, aku akan memberika ekspektasi terendah kepada orang tersebut. Aku akan menyebutkan seluruh kekuranganku dan aku meyakinkan rekan kerjaku ia takkan melihat kekuranganku lainnya yang lebih buruk dari apa yang aku katakan. Begitu juga dalam berteman dan menjalin hubungan sosial lainnya.

Namun berbeda dengan keluarga, mau sebagaimanapun kita mengerti diri sendiri, tetap harus mengikuti bahwa yang paling tau tentang keselamatan diri kita adalah orangtua yang memberikan DNA, melahirkan ke dunia dan merawat sampai anaknya tumbuh besar.

Persoalan itu tidak apa-apa untukku. Orangtua memang seharusnya merasa paling tau tentang anaknya meski salah. Artinya ia punya kepercayaan diri yang beigtu besar sebagai orangtua. Jika tidak, aku tidak kebayang memiliki orangtua yang ragu-ragu memperlakukan anaknya. Merasa tidak mengenal anaknya, merasa tidak memenuhi kebutuhan anaknya, membuat sang anak ragu, apa benar ini orangtua yang membawa ku ke dunia?

Maka ada banyak hal yang tidak ideal di dunia ini. Paling terdekat ya soal hubungan anak dan orangtua tadi, ternyata yang membagi darahnya pun belum tentu mengerti isi kepala dan sifat orok yang keluar dari perutnya. Lantas, kenapa kita banyak berkespektasi untuk hal asing lainnya?

Begitu pula kakakku yang mengatakan tak ingin dipahami, padahal ia yang paling butuh dan berterimakasih sudah dipahami. Dalam artian, hari ini satu keluarga benar-benar sedang memaklumi kondisinya. Bukan dalam artian semua orang membenarkan apa yang sedang ia kerjakan, tapi memahami proses kegiatan yang sedang ia jalani. Semua berproses.

Tadi aku meledak karena setelah sekian lama kami menunggu untuk bisa meeting untuk project tingkat asean, tiba-tiba ia menjadi gagap berbahasa inggris. Di mataku, itu sebuah keanehan yang langsung aku konfirmasi dengan tuduhan mengapa ia tidak fokus. Maka jawabannya adalah dia fokus pada pertemuan itu dan beralasan hal itu disebabkan karena sudah lama ia tidak convo dalam bahasa inggris. Terlebih beberapa kosakata terkait laporan yang tidak ia kuasai. Langsung saat itu emosiku melonjak, nadaku langsung naik, kok bisa-bisanya memberi penyangkalan yang tidak masuk akal begitu. Setelah aku desak, ia mengakui bahwa meeting kami berjalan semabri ia membalas pesan untuk pekerjaannya karena ia sedang dikantor dan juga sedang jam kerja. Lalu ia meyakinkan ku meski kondisinya begitu, ia tetap fokus pada meeting kami, juga mengaggapnya penting. Seperti aku yang kadangkala mungkin salah dalam pendefenisian, apakah kini ia memiliki defenisi lain dari kata 'fokus'?

Aku menjadi merasa disini orang yang butuh pertemuan ini hanyalah aku. Aku merasa disepelekan, aku merasa hanya aku yang struggle dan butuh clarify dari pihak donornya.

Dan ternyata dari kakakku, ia tidak sadar bahwa pertemuan dairng ini aku paksakan untuknya. Untuk menjawab banyak kekhatiran yang ia tidak mengerti sehingga menjadi beban setiap kali proyek ini disebut.

Lucunya, tingkat kekhawatirannya membuatnya sampai bermimpi bahwa ia harus mengembalikan semua dana yang telah kami terima hanya karena kami tidak bisa melaporkan kegiatan dengan baik.

Jujur saja, karena ini adalah sebuah tulisan dan nyaris apa yang aku tulis ini takkan pernah keluar di dunia nyata, rasanya saat mendengar kebodohan itu aku ingin memakinya langsung. Jika ia bukan kakakku, aku pasti sudah memperlakukannya buruk dengan mengatai "goblok" seperti yang pernah aku lakukan pada seseorang di masa lampau. Aku sangat menyesal jika mengingat hal itu.

Kakakku mengkhawatirkan hal sampai melukai mentalnya untuk hal yang tidak pernah ada.

Ada, seseorang yang begitu takut kulitnya akan terbakar didepan kompor mati. Meski gas bocor, meski kompor tersebut berkarat, meski switchnya rusak, takkan ada yang menyebakan kulitnya terbakar jika tidak ada yang menyulut apa disana. Masalahnya adalah, tidak ada siapa-siapa disana dan juga tidak ada yang punya kepentingan untuk menghidupkan kompor tersebut. Lalu ia sibuk menjada-jaga agar tidak adak ada kebocoran gas maupun ada yang memantik api disana.

Aku kira, overthinking adalah memikirkan kemungkinan-kemungkinan buruk yang akan terjadi saat kita sedang atau akan melakukan sesuatu. Dengan teori terbaiknya kita mengantisipasi setiap kemungkinan buruk tersebut dengan mempersiapkan solusi jika memang pada kahirnya itu terjadi agar kita tidak merasa anxiety.

Ternyata, ada overthinking yang memikirkan sesuatu yang tidak pernah ada asal-usulnya.

Ini terjadi, karena kakakku tidak menerima hal-hal yang memang tak sempurna atau tidak sesuai standar yang dibuat oleh manusia. Ia seorang anak pertama yang harus jadi panutan rasanya, ia seorang perempuan yang seharusnya bertubuh tinggi semapai, berkulit mulus dan terang dengan kontur wajah yang nyaman dilihat.

Beberapa hari lalu, aku memarahinya soal fisik. Aku katakan aku bukannya tidak insecure untuk paras wajah, tapi tidak aku katakan ke orang-orang. Ini kakakku sampai menangis menceritakan ketidak percayaan dirinya kepada ibu. Aku bilang, orang-orang mengatakan wajah kami berdua begitu mirip, tentu aku tersinggung jika ia sebegitu menyesalnya memiliki paras seperti itu, karena artinya wajahku pun dipandangnya begitu. Sialan.

Aku rasa ini menjadi tulisan yang penuh dengan makian yang takkan pernah aku katakan selamanya.

Jadi bagaimana menolongnya untuk menerima bahwa kita takkan mungkin sempurna?

Karena menerima ketidaksempurnaan bukanlah pasrah dan terlihat tidak berusaha dalam memaksimalkan potensi diri. Tolonglah.. hampir semua semua hal tidak bisa dipadang bolak-balik. Bahkan arus ac bolak balik juga merpakan arus yang tidak stabil.
