‘I’d rather deal with a hydra, but thanks,’ Phoebe said, smiling serenely despite the bite to her words, despite the fact that she was already turning away from the boy – she’d missed his name, the blood pounding in her ears making the first part of the conversation almost void. She was sick of people asking her to the dance, under some impression that she needed a date of any sort to fully enjoy the evening of festivities that were being put on. She wanted to go, to enjoy herself with whomever she felt like, not just be stuck with one person and a whole heap of expectation put on their shoulders. ‘Dionysus help me,’ she murmured.

An arrow buried itself in the tree trunk a little way in front of her. Startled, she stumbled backwards and readied herself for a fight. She balled and raised her fists like her mother had taught her, and was already working on calling her father’s strength.

‘Sorry!’ came a heavily accented Scottish voice as the new boy came jogging over. ‘Sorry, I dunea what happened.’ He grabbed the shaft of the arrow and battled to pull it free.

‘Isn’t your mother a master archer?’

‘Isn’t your father a god with huge amounts of strength?’ he countered, stumbling away from the tree without removing the arrow. He ran a hand awkwardly through his strawberry blond hair. ‘Mind giving a guy a hand?’

Phoebe raised an eyebrow, folded her arms; he wasn’t getting off that lightly. ‘What were you aiming at?’

‘The tree.’

She shook her head, not buying that for a moment.

He sighed. ‘All reet. I threw a bit of wood. I wanna practice with moving targets before that competition thing Hood’s got going on.’

‘How’s that going for you?’ she asked, a smirk pulling at her lips as she stepped forwards and freed the arrow easily.

‘Terrible,’ he admitted with a shrug and a smirk. ‘Wanna see the funniest attempts at archery this side of the water?’

Despite herself, Phoebe felt a small smile pulling at her lips. She turned away in the hopes of hiding it. ‘Perhaps,’ was all she said before she walked away, really kind of hoping that he might just follow her somewhere a little bit better for his practice.
