thank you for your dune opinions they nourish me.............. I enjoy dune but purely as pulp. struggle to see how people view it as enjoyable any other way

See, that's exactly what my one idiot crusade is all about. It's fun to go nuts and rant about how terrible it is but really its probably a totally passable if ultimately forgettable novel. I can understand why people enjoy it, I like plenty of medium things myself. I can even see how it inspired people, and why it caused seeds of ideas through basically all of our science fiction. I get all that.

Where my understanding stops is why so many people seem to think it is truly great. It is this fixture of the science fiction cultural canon. Won a nebula and a hugo! Have you seen some of the stuff that doesn't win a hugo? Were books just a trash fire that year and they had to pick something? But that's not it either, because many people claim it is the greatest sci fi novel of all time! That's criminal.

I hope people enjoy Dune! I am glad people do! But come on.

As a warning up front, this will not have a Happily Ever After ending, but maybe more like Happy For Now?

It took several days for the bleeding to stop. By the time you returned to the labs after your bedridden absence, that particular biting pain was replaced with grim paranoia. 

Your diet of Bane built itself inside of you so slowly, until all at once it was like the pain was a part of you, a second skin just beneath the surface. The increased light sensitivity and hand tremors you could get used to—if only the constant stomach cramps didn’t purge what little food you ate. What did it matter if you were already dying? 

You used up most of your supply of mint in effort to keep the pain at bay. Even after your period, your body barely adapted. It’s difficult to remember a time when you could merely breathe without feeling gutted.

Just saw Dune II for the second time and I'm really obsessed with the rebirth we see throughout the first two movies. The first time Paul kills a man, Paul Atreides dies and Mau'dib Usul is born. In his visions in the first movie he sees himself stabbed, killed on Jamis' blade. Because Paul Atreides dies when he kills Jamis. And Jamis' death heralds forth Mau'dib Usul, and quite literally guides him forth. Mau'dib dies when he takes the water of life, and Paul Mau'dib Atreides, duke of Arrakis is born. He is their Lisan al Gaib now, and he is no longer fighting it. Chani loved Mau'dib Usul, but she leaves behind Paul Mau'dib, because he is not her Paul any longer. And the final rebirth is what really gets me. When Paul Mau'dib Atreides, Duke of Arrakis, becomes Emperor Atreides. In that moment, he dies on the blade of Feyd-Rautha. Feyd-Rautha was supposed to bring forth the god emperor with Paul, and in a way, he does. His blade is what brings forth the final rebirth of Paul. And this final form of Paul is so alone. He stands alone (except for the women in his life, they're the real powerful ones here and always have been) while everyone kneels, he pulls the blade from his own shoulder and nobody moves forwards to help him, he has ascended into a complete and lonely godhood. Because that is what he's made himself. It's SOOO good. AUGH.

why did canopy in particular get forced to kill rather than just being killed by dune

dune actually did try to kill her at first, but she just barely survived the injury, and rather than just finish her off dune saw it as an opportunity to try something new. the big scar on her chest is from that murder attempt

i made a comic once about dune dragging canopy home immediately after this, theres some inconsistencies now and id change some of the dialogue but whatever lol

dune suffers from acute chronic boredom and is always looking for ways to alleviate it. shelter is a project to her, an experiment, a plaything. her siblings obey her because her word is enough to convince them- how much would it take to make an outsider follow her laws as well? what amount of torment can an iterator withstand- not only physically, but psychologically as well? she enjoys watching shelter break down, watching her morals dissolve. its fun for her to have someone around that she doesnt need to have any respect for

tldr canopy, somehow, survived her injuries and dune really really really sucks

okay so like over a week late, but obligatory wwwy post time lol

god it was Crazy. both good and bad. but the mcr part especially was wild. I was really overstimulated and exhausted and kinda over it yk. and then they came out and it was fun!

honestly being exhausted and overwhelmed was kinda part of the vibe. like we were all So tired, crammed together like literal sardines. there was No room to breathe or move and yet somehow people were making circle pits right next to us and it was Insane. but in a Good way.

and yk I couldn't see shit. I'm short and there were too many people so despite how, relativly, close we were to the stage, all I saw was the tops of the screens. but the Emotion was still there. it felt a bit like people just doing a sing along rather than a concert (tho that might just be bc I was shutting down lol) but it was FUN

and my all time favorite part/thing was how Into it everyone was. gerard was singing the song yk and people around me were each singing different like harmonies. best example is mama and famous last words and Sleep (god sleep killed me fuck)

famous last words was insane cause I realized about half way through the final bit that it was *me* screaming the 'or dead' bit as gerard sang. like I could hear myself. it was WIld and it really made it feel connected again. I think that's my point. the festival felt really impersonal but the crowd for MCR changed all of that. we were performing and living it out Just like the band was. the exhaustion and everything Fed into it.

I saw after the fact people talking about how mcr really leaned into the meloncolic, growing horror of Black Parade. it's dark and haunted and Sad but also kinda a fuck you at the same time. and that's how it felt ot Be there. we were all zombie like but singing every word and Losing our shit and singing the songs right along with them.

idk man it was Insane and I'm still like trying to piece together how i feel weeks later.

TLDR: MCR nailed the theme and this was the most 'connected' and also 'disconnected' I've ever felt at a show

also also I got to do my favorite thing which is wave flashlights at people super far away. this time they weren't across a stadium they were up high in apartments (hotels?) next to the festivle grounds. and they waved back and that is my favorite little human interaction of 'hi, you're way too far away to see and ill never meet you again but HI!'
