A/N: I’ve never read the books, so this is a combination of the Villeneuve films, the Dune Wiki, and a heavy dose of just making shit up lol. I try my best to make Reader as nondescript as possible, but there are mentions of having periods and body hair in later chapters. As a warning up front, this will not have a Happily Ever After ending, but maybe more like Happy For Now?

It took several days for the bleeding to stop. By the time you returned to the labs after your bedridden absence, that particular biting pain was replaced with grim paranoia. 

Your diet of Bane built itself inside of you so slowly, until all at once it was like the pain was a part of you, a second skin just beneath the surface. The increased light sensitivity and hand tremors you could get used to—if only the constant stomach cramps didn’t purge what little food you ate. What did it matter if you were already dying? 

You used up most of your supply of mint in effort to keep the pain at bay. Even after your period, your body barely adapted. It’s difficult to remember a time when you could merely breathe without feeling gutted.

It's such a minor gripe but I hate it when people in fanon content make it so that the giant swelterstone in the Dunes has a habit of dimming/being covered up at night. It just. Feels like it detracts from the whole "ecological disaster" deal if the swelterstone can just be covered up (why not keep it constantly covered in that case? Then monsters can grow greenery in the Dunes and restore it back to the Meadows). And the Underground is supposed to be a stagnant environment (I think Alphys said that there's no real weather in the Underground. Also the Underground is literally underground. Of course it's not gonna experience weather like the Surface). Having a 24-hour "sun" that bakes the land dry and withers crops and throws off everyone's circadian rhythm feels more in line with the whole "hopeless, unchanging Underground" situation than an imitation sun that "rises" and "sets."

why did canopy in particular get forced to kill rather than just being killed by dune

dune actually did try to kill her at first, but she just barely survived the injury, and rather than just finish her off dune saw it as an opportunity to try something new. the big scar on her chest is from that murder attempt

i made a comic once about dune dragging canopy home immediately after this, theres some inconsistencies now and id change some of the dialogue but whatever lol

dune suffers from acute chronic boredom and is always looking for ways to alleviate it. shelter is a project to her, an experiment, a plaything. her siblings obey her because her word is enough to convince them- how much would it take to make an outsider follow her laws as well? what amount of torment can an iterator withstand- not only physically, but psychologically as well? she enjoys watching shelter break down, watching her morals dissolve. its fun for her to have someone around that she doesnt need to have any respect for

tldr canopy, somehow, survived her injuries and dune really really really sucks
