On one level a dune video game sounds absolutely egregious, taking a story about colonialism, religious propaganda and imperial power imposing upon any nations they want for resources and making it like "Click A to design your own Prophet" is horrifying, but in another way it's also unbelievably funny.

Yeah I guess what if you and your buddies could ride that worm that's explicitly a cultural artform and practice. What if you saw Arrakis as a dangerous sand place to host an MMO. What if you treated every person you meet as an ally or enemy divided into neat understandable factions that you could push and pull at your whim. What if you just started stacking on bene gesserit, mentat, warrior achievements like they're power ups.

You know what that sounds like, sounds like Paul Muad'dib Atreides, they get the book more than anyone else Ever has.

You tell me if I got high with Frank Herbert we wouldn't start theorizing what if Paul was born a girl and fucked feyd rautha??? This game understands the book completely

Just catching up on Summer Game Fest. Who thought a Dune MMO would be a good idea? I just watched the trailer and am bamboozled by the whole concept.

"What if Jessica had a daughter?" She would get married to Feyd Rautha and have a monster baby the end

"This is the only good timeline" directly contradicts the concept of the books, in which canon timeline is the closest anyone will get to a good option

But the main thing is that you're making an MMO out of an IP in which worldbuilding was NOT a priority for the creator. The logic of the world doesn't make sense, Herbert didn't really need to elaborate on how the scope or impact of anything work, how the tech works, anything like that. The stuff that holds the world of Dune together are rubber bands made of themes, introspection, and drugs. So rather than developing a tightly controlled linear story, Funcom are opting for placing the world front and centre in a game that will need updated content, seemingly restricted to Arrakis. It just feels like not the right direction to doing the books any justice.

Also I guess we'll just breeze past "the only good timeline is the one where we finished the job and exterminated all the Fremen" like!!!! Okay!!!!

Funcom's sandbox survival MMO Dune: Awakening is certainly pretty. "Survive the sandworm, craft your ornithopter, build a fortress, and ascend to power on an open world Arrakis shared with hundreds of other players." (Funcom)

Crime Scene Cleaner

Autopsy Simulator

Maybe my "genre" of streaming games is crime, simulators, noir, and sometimes horror.

(FYI: I'm also really looking forward to Dune: Awakening)
