Highlander Rewatch Episode 1.1

Join me for a daily(ish) blogging of what was once my favourite show.

Once upon a time, long, long ago, my first love was Highlander (the TV series). I've wanted to rewatch it for a long time, but it isn't streaming anywhere and the box of battered VHS tapes that I’d recorded off of cable have been lost to the sands of time. Thankfully, Youtube has come through, hopefully I can piece together all the episodes in the right order.

If I'm going to watch 119 episodes of this show (Wow, that's a lot of TV, I forgot how long TV seasons used to be), what better way to experience this than to share my random thoughts on the random-thought-sharing website?

*Note, this won’t be a live-blogging so much as a collection of thoughts after I watch each episode.

More below the cut in case anyone is worried about spoilers for a…checks notes…oh, god, that can’t be right…32 year old show. Anyway...there can be only one! Let’s go.

Episode 1.1 The Gathering

IMBD Description: Immortal Duncan MacLeod leaves tranquility when kinsman Connor returns and evil Immortal Slan Quince challenges him to a battle. [It's very funny that Slan has a last name in the credits, because it definitely didn't come up as he was threatening and swording at people. I'm also dying at "leaves tranquility" as a description that's supposed to mean...anything.]

Tranquility or not, let's watch this thing.

I appreciate an opening scene that transitions from giggly sex to this:

Yes. Good. No notes.

Am also belatedly realizing how imprinted I am on Mac’s nicely styled long hair and intense eyes. 

Oh, I forgot how much blatant misogyny there was in the 90s. Well, we’re just going to have to work through it together. 

Christopher Lambert is not a great actor, but there’s something subtly charming about him. Having him in the first episode really transitions the series nicely from the movie, even if everyone’s acting is a bit stiff. 

They really laid the groundwork for Tessa’s death in season 2 so early with the conversation between her and Mac about him outliving all of his past lovers. [Side note: I was enraged by her death at the time and nearly quit watching, let’s see how I feel this time around.] I love how spunky Tessa is from the get-go, not letting Mac call the shots, even though he tries to. And both of them being ride or die for each other is why I was so into the show at the time. Too bad it ended up being the latter. (Can you tell I’m still bitter?)

 Ritchie is such a punk kid. In my head he was a bit older, and a lot more annoying than he seems this time around. Now he seems more true to how a 17 year old would be if he discovered a bunch of immortal swordspeople living among us. 

The flashback scenes are another area that I’m potentially a bit yikes about - very interested to see how they hold up.

Love the ending of the episode where we’re apparently not going to talk about Mac running away or anything like that? Now everything is fine? Truly a Gen-X style resolution we can all be proud of. 

I have skipped over all the swordplay, but rest assured there was a lot of it, and the good guys prevailed.

Extended thoughts on the Dark Fortress preview pages [spoilers at link]

(Would I be an MJ if I did not do this? This post is under a cut due to spoilers.)

I like the preview pages a lot, I’m excited for release - roll on March 31. There’s a lot packed into just these limited pages, so I’m looking forwards to seeing the issue and its contents in their entirety. 

A flashback to the Battle of Ostagar all those years ago is the last thing I was expecting when coming to this comic and it hit me with a one-two of feelings and nostalgia. Up there just off-screen, the Hero of Ferelden and Alistair have just lit the beacon in the Tower of Ishal. In these panels, the rain, the lighting, the atmosphere - it’s surreal (not in a bad way) seeing these fateful events again, back where it all kinda began really, and that page does a good job of replicating that cutscene and the heavy feel of it in a different medium. It’s a nice touch seeing surprise/unsureness and even conflict on some of the soldiers’ faces as Loghain gives the order to retreat. A couple of them even seen disconcerted as they walk away (looking at one another in askance). I like this take on Ser Cauthrien, and I wonder if Aaron ever encountered Aveline, Wynne, Carver or non-mage Hawke at Ostagar before the battle...?

Loghain’s words “He must do what his honor compels him to do” almost feel like a bit of metacommentary, i.e. on Loghain’s character in addition to obviously being about Ser Aaron.

In-universe before now, there have been varying accounts of Ser Aaron’s experience at Ostagar. Did he miss the fight, did he kill two ogres, etc. Now we see the truth of the matter is exactly as he told Vaea, which speaks of the trust and close relationship between the two. I’m not going to lie, the “I am coming my king” and subsequent panels make me cry on this re-read. Aaron reaching out for Cailan in his sleep with his other fist clenched, jerking awake from a nightmare in a cold sweat.. Aaron is so brave, he was the sole or one of the few soldiers in Loghain’s company to make this kind of stand (and you can see that there was a moment when he did turn to leave and considered it before turning back), and these panels convey the extent of the trauma that he experienced on the field of battle that day. I’m positive that in panel 2 here, it’s the exact moment when he sees Cailan die. It also hurts to think that not far from there, Duncan is seeing the same thing. They’ve done a good job integrating the new characters’ pasts with previous canon events with things like these. It’s like, expanding on things, but without anything conflicting.

When Aaron reaches for his alcohol skin I’m pretty sure his hand is shaking. Vaea is so tender and understanding/supportive at this part and it’s a really poignant and soft moment for them.. Aaron’s nightmares are a regular occurrence it seems. I love her and their relationship so much.. keeping watch over him while he sleeps a bit away from the others and the fire. ;; Also Autumn’s ears here, she’s lying down but still listening to what’s going on with and between her people. ;;

Brief pause here: I always appreciate getting a good sense where different events are taking place in the additional media. Also we now have in-universe confirmation that in the timeline we’ve now reached 9:45, as opposed to only external word-of-god. Do you guys ever think about your Wardens and how it’s been 15 years for them?

Fenris has two daggers now in addition to his twohanded sword. The better for ending Danarius’ bloodline my dear 🔪

Have they tweaked Fenris’ hairstyle a bit, compared to Blue Wraith? Possibly also his skintone and eyebrows, compared to Blue Wraith? (I find this kind of thing hard to tell. If I’m incorrect here please feel free to correct me.) He looks good in this preview.

Poor Francesca. Tessa is really kind at this part and it’s nice to see more moments like these between female characters (women supporting one another). It reminds me of the moment in a previous issue where Vaea hugs Francesca on the ground. Tessa makes a great point here that true strength isn’t necessarily being stoic and unemotional, it’s standing up for what you believe in and for the greater good, even at great personal cost. It’s not 'not crying' and hiding your sadness. That’s a nice message, and again, Fran has really grown on me.

I also think it speaks well of Fenris and his character development after all these years in-universe that he was looking for a way to help Aaron, then immediately thought to go speak to Francesca when she was upset to see if he could help her in turn.

hhh brooding silent Marius staring broodily and silently into the flames and not responding to Fenris’ attempt at making conversation tho, the gentle lampshading..  That’s so true to his character. These might be my favorite panels in the whole preview. Fenris’ dry wit and facial expressions, the general composition, Fenris peacing out like “ok bye ig” lmao. You also get the sense that Fenris is reeling a bit and feeling abandoned since Hawke and co split up. After trying to do something to help both Aaron and Fran above, he then tries to make conversation with Marius. He’s trying to lighten the mood but also to connect after being alone for some time. He has missed having a group around him, and I suspect this group with its varying troubles and issues reminds him a lot of Hawke and co. That both the humor aspect and this characterization comes through in these 3 panels is pretty brilliant.

We reach the titular dark fortress! If ever there was a fortress for a bad guy, huh? x) The narrow exposed causeway being the only approach is a smart line of defense, strategically. Also, the realization that this is where Fenris lived while he was a slave of Danarius’ :| It’s a horrible-looking place and will be full of bad memories for him.

If this is how stormy the Nocen Sea gets in places - well, it reminds me of the lore that in Thedas naval exploration beyond the known map has been historically limited by different factors like pirates, Qunari dreadnoughts, stormy seas and sea creatures etc.

Characters speaking their native languages in places is always a nice touch. Now we’ve heard “By the Maker!” in Orlesian.

Aspects of the style and architecture of the Tevinter buildings in this preview, like the window shapes and the red lights and stuff, echo or remind me of what we’ve seen of Minrathous in the most recent trailer and some of the recent pieces of concept art for the next game. Neat.

We have our name and identity for the mage on the cover! Tractus Danarius, bastard son of Danarius. Danarius fucked around huh. “Tractus” has a Latin root, fittingly for a Tevinter name. Its different meanings are quite interesting: being dragged, extracted, plundered, an anthem sung in some masses, an elongated area or abnormal passage... I wonder if one of them will come into play somehow, the name possibly having been chosen for a reason? I also wonder how young Tractus is relative to Fenris, and if their paths have ever crossed in the past.

Tractus makes his entrance with two elven slaves or servants in tow. Like on the cover, his eyes are red. The head of his staff is a red sphere, also. Can we assume a connection to red lyrium, then, given these factors and the villains’ interest in using red lyrium to power the sarcophagus? I would guess that as normal magic was required to make it work with blue lyrium, the thing required to make it work with red lyrium is blood magic? A blood magic ritual. My guess is that the thing Tractus shows Marquette and Nenealeus is probably a chained up dragon or similar, which they plan to sacrifice and use the blood/power derived from that to fuel the magic/ritual. This is considering blood as a theme in this setting, blood as a source of power mechanically and the dragon-like beast on one of the covers which has clearly at one point been shackled and collared. (Here’s some previous speculation about Dark Fortress based on the covers.)

Although Tractus’ relative youth and inexperience compared to Nenealeus comes across in these pages, I get the feeling that Nenealeus will regret talking down in this manner to Tractus later in the comic.

It seems Tractus paints his nails dark. His commitment to aesthetic I give 5/5 stars

Remember the fall of Ventus/Qarinus to the Antaam invasion in TN? The Antaam must be progressing through Tevinter if people fear that Neromenian may soon fall also.

I appreciate that everyone’s horse is different! It’s a nice touch. A lot of the time in media groups of people ride identical horses like they’re clones or automatons as opposed to actual creatures.

Tractus’ smile when he’s asking if they’re going to wait for Qintara to arrive is slightly manic, lol, he’s giving off “Are we there yet?” car journey energy here. The doorway in this panel - is that a portcullis-style door? It seems like it has spikes at the bottom which would sink into the floor, and that there’s some kind of mechanism running along the floor towards it. Presumably to contain the [dragon?]?

I forgot Nenealeus has a sword - I guess then he knows magic artforms similar to those of a Knight-Enchanter or Arcane Warrior. Also here, Marquette echoes the Executor in TN, with the sentiment that Qintara fell with Ventus. Nenealeus is then referencing Gaius, the impersonator Qintara, right? That’s interesting; Gaius’ true master was Fen’Harel, on whose behalf he accessed important information about the world. This means then [?] that some of the time when Gaius believed himself to be working on behalf of Fen’Harel, he was really being manipulated by Nenealeus. Poor Gaius, at different points Fen’Harel and Nenealeus were pulling his strings. Does Nenealeus’ manipulation refer to Gaius trading it away to House Danarius for information?

Marquette references the red lyrium idol, and suddenly my Dragon Age 4 ears are pricking the way Autumn’s do. x) He mentions that it makes weapons, referencing I assume Meredith’s lyrium sword, Certainty and the ritual blade that pops out from the base of the idol during The Dread Wolf Take You. I wonder when the events of this comic take place in relation to the stories related at the spy meeting in TDWTY? Is this before or after the events of the Mortalitasi’s tale? At any rate, Marquette voices something we’ve been obsessing over: what else can and does the idol do specifically, beyond just making weapons and being Ominous and Powerful? Because whatever it is, it’s key to Solas’ ongoing plans, and Solas obviously knows.

So it seems that the villains’ plan is to use the red lyrium idol’s sword part with the sarcophagus, red lyrium, a ritual and [the thing Tractus shows them in that panel - the dragon?] in order to transform Shirallas into, essentially, a Red Wraith, a Red Lyrium Fenris. And then to arm him, under Nenealeus’ control, with the sword.

Does Shirallas still have his vallaslin - is it just the lighting and the angle in that panel? Also, that panel with Shirallas and Nenealeus looks so ominous and foreboding 😭 .. (and reminds me somehow of Fenris and Danarius when Fenris was still his slave and bodyguard) Shirallas, we really are in it now 😭 This is a really cool panel btw, like the composition, the lighting, the dramatic-ness. 

Nenealeus is motivated by a desire to route the Antaam from Tevinter (like the mage in the Mortalitasi’s tale in TDWTY) and reconquer lost lands in order to restore the glory of the Imperium (which reminds me in a way of of Aurelian Titus, who also wanted to restore the Imperium to greatness). Classically Tevinter here.

“Danarius the Lesser” is a sick burn. I’d guess Tractus’ life thus far, as a bastard, has had themes and struggles with inferiority and consequent lack of power but desire for it (being disrespected, but craving respect, being connected to a certain world but not really part of it, in fact rejected by it). Venatori connection confirmed. That the Venatori had to be convinced to accept someone as a Danarius - implications for the role of the Venatori remnants and their role in Tevinter and things in general going forwards? Lightning flashes overhead as Tractus and Nenealeus have this face-off in that panel, emphasizing the tension between the two. I wonder what the magic in the fortress and in the courtyard can do? It’d have been no mean feat to escape from this place as a slave, it seems, especially bearing in mind there’s only one proper way out, that causeway (passage not included). Tractus’ staff-head lights up when he’s making a threat (uh-oh), and then wow! Shirallas moves so quickly, in the blink of an eye suddenly appearing out of nowhere and startling the guard-mage onlookers. He’s fast and formidable.

I wonder about Tractus. Is he a “half blood” because he’s a bastard and his mother wasn’t an Altus, or even wasn’t a mage, or because he’s a bastard and his mother was an elf? Or both?

Will we see a face-off between perrepataes (Marius and Shirallas)? Will Marius face-off against his former master, Nenealeus? Perhaps a showdown between the Blue Wraith and the “Red Wraith” is on the cards?

Back to our team in the tavern! There’s a looot of great character content packed into these pages, which is really cool. Each brief character interaction conveys a lot, and in general this sequence is just well-executed imo. How troubled and tired Aaron looks at the bar (my heart.. it hurts); Fran worrying for Aaron; Vaea knowing that she can’t pressure him too much because that’s just not how it works when it comes to folks who struggle with issues like these; Vaea asking after Fran’s wellbeing; Fran struggling to come to terms with what happened to her father; Fenris watching the door waiting for news (he’s so vigilant isn’t he? safety, an escape-route..); Marius Broods Harder; Vaea’s [relative] pacifism being highlighted; Vaea engaging Marius looking for reassurance; and the choice of having Marius break his silence now is meaningful and impactful in that it shows what happens when one becomes ‘numb’ to the constant murderizing of people, so to speak. Fenris then rightfully points out that becoming numb to killing and violence isn’t really a good thing and is worse, really, than being ‘soft’ or uncomfortable with it. I wonder if he’s speaking from experience here, given the hundreds of people Hawke and co kill their way through during the Kirkwall years, for example. Then Vaea’s concern for Aaron and his state of mind, and Fenris’ uncanny insight into that, of a man he’s only recently met.

Tessa looks so cute when she comes in the door! I love Vaea’s lil “:D” face when she sees her, and I wonder what the tavern food on the table is.

Those two panels, when Fenris talks about Hawke and Leandra, are the biggest emotional gut-punch in the preview pages 😭 omg.. I’m not strong enough for this.. bls... bruh... This is then compounded by (hitting me when I’m down!!) the look of sheer... fear, fury, alarm, upset, shock - that appears on Fenris’ face as soon as he hears “I found Danarius”. Seriously, look at his eyes here. He (understandably) still has a trauma-response associated with the name/man.

Bless Tessa. 

I have to say, it’s very Metal of Fenris that not only did he kill Danarius in DA2 (in those universes), but he has also been going around Tevinter since then killing all of Danarius’ [adult] heirs, and that his response to learning there’s still one remaining is to grab his sword and go to march off with the aim of ending the bloodline a second time. Very metal

I love the final panels in the preview as well! Vaea’s sense/smarts and how she wasn’t afraid to tell Fenris no, Autumn’s giant ears, how Autumn also moves with Vaea to step in front of Fenris to stop him (SHE! HELPED!!!), Autumn’s Happy Face and furiously wagging tail and agreement with Aaron, and Proud Dad Aaron rising from his slump to praise Vaea with the most Proudest Daddest expression that you ever did see...  ( ´•̥̥̥ω•̥̥̥` )

Something that I don't like about shipping duncney and overall being into the whole enemies to lovers and the entire good girl x bad guy trope...

If done correctly it can be AMAZING. But when the writers don't give a fuck about making it healthy and just making the guy hot, you get these pieces of crap.

It's so sad seeing these toxic ass relationships in media and thinking how much they remind me of Duncan and Courtney, because I'd definitely use them for daydreaming and AU material. But unlike them, Duncney (in the first season) was actually done correctly. These relationships are NOT okay.

These relationships are SO toxic, ridiculously toxic. It just makes me sick.

Hardin only dated Tessa as a fucking bet he proposed.

John and Claire's entire dynamic is based on John sexually harassing and being a fucking jerk to Claire and her settling for that.

Hache slapped Babi and put her in dangerous situations SO MANY TIMES.

Danny was a jerk the entire time to Sandy just so at the end she changed all of herself to be the famous "cool girl" for him.

And don't even come at me because here are the prooves that it can be done right if writers care enough.

Landon and Jamie from A Walk to Remember.

Jackie and Hyde from That 70's Show.

Jake and Amy. (Even if Jake isn't that much of a bad guy).

Duncan and Courtney (FIRST SEASON).

And even if they never dated, Kendall and Kick. They were a great example of a couple that had so much potential to be enemies to lovers with a ton of tension and banter that never got toxic. Even if it's sad that they never got together, I think it was better than rushing their relationship and having it be trash.

It can be done properly, writers just don't care enough. They care about making a cool bad boy and a girl who settles for his toxic behaviours or claiming she can "fix him" like a manic pixie dream girl, using a woman as a resource for a man's own growth. They don't focus on her character at all, and when they do, it's just to derail it. "Watch this girl be put through tons of shit for a man and settling for it".

And don't even get me started on the damn Kissing Booth.

Summary: After years of being imprisoned on the Raft, Tony negotiates freedom for his sister Tessa. When she’s free- so is her past, and it will never stop hunting her.

A/N: this is my first work I'm posting to this platform and I’m really excited and nervous about it. Hope you enjoy- constructive criticism is always helpful as well!!

Bucky’s eyes felt heavy. His whole body felt heavy. He groaned, rolling over and gagging at the taste in his mouth. What the hell happened? As he pushed himself up, his foot hit something and another groan rang into the air. Bucky froze before he scrambled to his knees, whipping around. He let out a breath he didn’t know he held when he saw Tessa moving. Sure it was a slow movement but it was movement nonetheless.

“Tess-“ his voice was groggy and raspy. He shook her shoulder, causing her to groan again and pry her eyes open. Bucky looked like an angel to her- fluorescent lights behind his head in a halo, blue eyes staring down at her with loving concern.

“Buck?” Her tongue felt like sandpaper, her mouth dry. She rolled over and her stomach catapulted. She didn’t vomit, her stomach cramping up from the dry heaving she did though. Bucky’s hand was warm against her back as she breathed heavily. Finally, she shoved it back down and slumped back against the wall. Bucky sat in front of her.

“You okay?” He asked, brushing a stray piece of hair from her face. She nodded and squinted at him.

“You?” She asked, her throat raw and sore. Bucky gave a quick nod in return before leaning back against the wall in front of her. They sat, the toes of their boots touching as they took in their surroundings. They were in a block cell, a small cramped one. The door was metal, assumably fire proof. Tessa knew Clifton wasn’t an idiot. He was self absorbed and crazed but he was smart. “What now?” Bucky was silent, his response already heavy in the air before even speaking.

“I don’t know.” He replied. They could only wait. Both ex- soldiers were aware. It was a waiting game. They would have to take an opportunity when it was presented. For now... they could only sit.

Tessa exhaled through her nose, leaning her forearms on her knees and bowing her head. Part of her knew it was only a matter of time before Clifton decided he wanted her back. He needed more research on a subject that was already a success. Albeit, an accidental success but if he wanted more like her... she was the only blueprint. And after Operation Brimstone... things escalated quickly after that. She should’ve warned them- instead of freezing up when the intel was decoded, she should’ve taken the time to explain. She swallowed harshly, remembering how she’d burned the papers before swiftly exiting the room. She didn’t have to be so harsh- why did she close everyone out like that?

Part of her knew that if she told the truth to her new team, they’d send her back to the Raft. Even her brother would look at her differently. They would see her as what she truly was... dangerous. Unstable. Of course, it was partly her fault she was like that. Fire was a peculiar thing, in of itself. Even with Clifton attempting to train her, she never grasped it fully before being shoved into the field. Then with being locked away, doused of power and control, she never got the chance to be successful. She had been doomed from the beginning.

The other part of her knew she would die in here. She was never going to make it off Clifton’s table of he got his hands on her again. He would dissect and test and poke and prod until she bled out. And a pang of guilt shot through her whole body. She would die and no one would know the truth. She couldn’t let everyone believe in a woman who murdered her team.

But then... there was him. Opening her eyes, she saw Bucky sitting before her. Her heart told her he wouldn’t judge. He would accept what she told him. He would understand her. Her mind told her that he wouldn’t. He would think of her as unstable. He wasn’t given a choice. You were- and you chose this curse.

But then his eyes met hers and- sweet heavens above. That blue could melt her heart into a puddle. His eyes crinkled around the edges, smile lines appearing as he gave her a grin.

“What?” He asked. When he’d turned back to look at her, she was wearing this goofy expression, drifted off into dreamland. Her eyes focused on him. And he liked it- anything to keep her attention. Even in this life threatening situation. There was a moment of silence... every thought that had been jumbled in Tessa’s brain seemed to snap into alignment as she looked at him. She took a deep breath through her nose.

“When I was in the army... my team was the best. We carried missions out to perfection, our casualty number was low, success rate high. Our team never faltered... but even the Titanic sank.” Her voice cracked and she dipped her head, her gaze lowering to his chest. Bucky stayed quiet, allowing her to work through her thoughts. “Then, I was chosen for Project Maelstrom. I went through the tests and the experiment and I wasn’t turned into a super soldier... I was... this.” She gestured lazily to her body. “It wasn’t intended. And I was thrown into the field too early- I didn’t have the proper training.” She shook her head.

“The first mission, there were only a few mishaps- it gave the generals confidence in me. Too much, too fast. We were sent on a second. It went over well... when we were being transported back to camp, our MRAP was blown sky high by a land mine. I don’t know how long we were there- the whole event is still hazy, even now when I try to look back.” Tessa pursed her lips, biting down on her trembling bottom one. Bucky reached over and took her hand, tangling his fingers with hers. “The next thing I can remember is coming to in some sort of... building or cave- something. My whole team was chained... tortured. I... I thought I could help... I thought that maybe I was given the enhancement for that reason. So, when the men came in, I started a fire...”

Bucky saw her swallow again, tears building up in her eyes. She clenched her jaw and squeezed his hand, trying to gather her nerve. She sniffled before letting out a shaky breath.

“But it got out of control- I couldn’t control it and it began crumbling the place. There was a kid on the team- fresh out of high school... Duncan Brooks. He enrolled to pay for college. Said his ma worked three jobs to put food on the table. It worried her to death, he said, but it was worth it to him.” She used her free hand to wipe at her face. “My chains snapped and I was able to get free. I was about to start working on his when the ceiling fell. A chunk fell right on top of us... but I was able to catch it before it completely flattened us... I managed to hold it up, kneeling over him. I didn’t even know if he was still alive at that point, just trying to keep myself together.”

Her shoulders sagged and Bucky could tell she could still feel that weight. The weight of a collapsing ceiling on her shoulders. The weight of starting that fire... the weight of her team’s lives on her hands.

“Finally, another team found us... they pulled us from the rubble. We had been there at least nine hours- that’s the best estimate they could figure.” She glanced to the door before continuing. “The two men that found me began calling me Atlas- I’d held the ceiling up for that long on my shoulders. People thought I was a hero, but I knew better. I didn’t admit it though... I lied to them. To everyone. I was ashamed and guilty... then the truth came out. The generals and Dr. Clifton figure out the origin of the fire was me- I had killed my team, all but Duncan, who survived by an act of God...”

She shook her head, trying to stifle the sobs ripping from her throat. Her chest heaved and she was shaking. Bucky was quick to shift over to her side and wrap her in his arms. She buried herself down into his chest, hiccuping and sobbing. He rocked her gently, trying to soothe her.

“It’s okay...” he murmured, his lips brushing the top of her head. Tessa sniffled and leaned where her voice was audible.

“It never got out to the rest of the camp... the generals just told everyone I had PTSD from the experience and they were retiring me. In truth, they locked me in the Raft. Clifton was allowed access for two months to gather data but then he was denied access when I was declared unstable and violent.” Tessa’s forehead leaned against Bucky’s neck, the warmth of her skin felt soothing to his nerves. Bucky’s metal hand moved up and down her arm, his other brushing tears off her face. He made sure his eyes met hers when he spoke.

“It wasn’t fair of them to throw you into something so fast. You had no training, you didn’t know what you were doing... it isn’t your fault.” He explained, his voice low and comforting. “And you were a hero... you saved someone’s life- you held a chunk of ceiling up for nine hours, Tess. All to save one man’s life when you could’ve saved yourself. That’s heroic behavior in my book.”

Tessa didn’t answer, she just leaned into his touch more, feeling the warmth of his touch. The cool metal of his fingers trailing down her arm. Her chest felt tight and her eyes stung. She knew it would never make up for the facts. And she hated that she’d used Bucky in that moment- trying to ease her conscience. He thought she was trusting him. In a way she was but, she knew it was the end of the line for her. But someone had to know; someone had to bring the truth to light. The army would only cover it up, blotting out their mistake, the mistake that burned her team alive.

“Thank you for telling me...” Bucky whispered into her hair. He squeezed her arm as she lay there, almost catatonic. “I promise, everything is gonna be okay. I’m not going anywhere.”

There was a loud clang of metal from behind them, startling Tessa into sitting up, placing herself between the door and Bucky. She wouldn’t let him get caught in her mess. Dr. Clifton rounded the door, his hands clasped behind his back. The smile that pulled at his lips was one of true lunacy.

“Well, my dear- it’s time to begin...”

CHARACTER DETAILS

Your character would be the wife of the eldest Stewart sibling, Duncan. Duncan is the eldest of the three siblings: Marion is the middle child; Hayden, the youngest. The Stewart parents are two high-profile corporate lawyers based in Boston, and had raised their children with the intent of letting them carry the family’s legacy. (Essentially, to be little versions of themselves.) But whereas Marion and Hayden had failed to deliver, Duncan — their golden boy — thrived. He’d since built a career as a businessman and is also on the board of many other corporations.

This is where your character enters the mix. In pursuit of a perfect nuclear family complete with wife, kids, and white picket fences, Duncan courted your character. Apart from that detail, the rest of her character is up to you. I do see her sharing a high-strung work ethic, which is what had attracted Duncan to her in the first place. The timeline of this is also very flexible, but I imagine they’ve been together for more than 5 years, enough to have a kid or two. (Possibly another on the way 👀?) All things considered, it was a thriving marriage, because Duncan had always wanted to keep his family happy. Perhaps too happy, to the point of being stifling.

Frankie and I also have it established that he’s begun to “slip.” The Stewart family was volatile growing up, and the burdens he carried in all this time could’ve possibly begun to weigh on him. The extent of how much he’s fallen apart is also largely UTP. Maybe he lost his position, or he became addicted to substances, or they’re knee-deep in debt. Whichever the case, she and their kids have moved to Catalina to enlist his siblings’ help — or perhaps to leave him altogether.

Summary: Detective Sarah Lamb did not ask for a new partner nor did she want one. John Seed has graciously volunteered his services to solve the murder of a coworker at the law firm he works and she doesn’t trust him for a second. If she has to listen to his disappointment in her taste in music one more time she might actually crash them into the embankment.

“I don’t need a new partner, sir. I’ve got Pratt.” Sarah crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair.

“Pratt is Hudson’s partner and he’s still on desk duty after that stunt he pulled last week.” Whitehorse shot her a harsh glare as she covered her mouth to hide her amused look.

“What about Tessa? She could still be my partner.”

“Rook is in Vice now, you’re still Homicide.” Whitehorse pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. “Look, you’re a good detective Lamb, but you’d be better with a partner. I’m not saying I’ll babe assigning you one tomorrow, but in the next few weeks I’ll find a candidate to fill Rook’s spot on the team and they’re going to be your partner.”

Sarah glared at her shoes for a second, fighting back the urge to continue complaining. “Yes, sir.” She pushed her chair back and stood to leave. “I’ll see myself out if there’s nothing else.”

Whitehorse shook his head and waved her away. Sarah carefully closed the door and made her way across the bullpen, throwing herself into her desk chair.

“Bad news?” Staci asked, wheeling his chair over to her desk.

“He’s making me get a new partner.” She sighed and pulled a casefile from the pile on her desk. She’d closed it that morning, the coroner had ruled it a suicide in the end, so she just had to finish up the paperwork.

“I thought Rook was your partner?” He was tapping on the edge of her desk with a couple of pens.

“She’s moved to Vice.” She didn’t bother looking up, smacking his pens away with an irritated huff.

“Since fucking when?”

“Since last week dumbass. Do you not pay attention to anything that happens here?” Sarah finally peeled her eyes from her paper and gave Pratt a questioning look.

“I’m on desk duty, Sarah, I’ve been playing the Bioshock games for the last week. I just finished Infinite.” He had a proud grin on his face and Sarah couldn’t help but snort out a laugh.

“How’d you even get that on the computer without Whitehorse throwing a fit?”

“He’s Whitehorse, the guy would still have a rotary phone in his office is the department didn’t make him upgrade.” Staci snickered and Sarah joined him, ducking her head behind her computer when Whitehorse threw open the door to his office.

“Pratt.” He barked, Staci muttered an apology and wheeled himself back to his desk. He shot Staci a disapproving look as he walked past his desk, stopping in front of Sarah’s desk. “Lamb you’ve got a case. Take Hudson with you.”

“What is it?” Sarah asked as she stood from her desk, pulling on her jacket.

“Lawyer at Sutherland Wells was murdered, Eliot Horne. His assistant found the body.” Whitehorse informed her, giving her the address. Sarah nodded and grabbed her keys, leaving the station with Hudson at her side.

Sarah flashed her badge to the posted uniform as she ducked under the crime scene. She walked down the hallway towards the crime scene, glancing at the witnesses that stood around waiting to be interviewed.

“Find the assistant and get her statement. I’ll go check out the body.” Sarah ordered Hudson, slipping between a pair of uniforms standing guard at the doorway to the office of the murdered associate. Sarah slowed when she spotted Tessa studying the crime scene.

“Rook? What’s vice doing here?” She questioned, her territorial side kicking in. This was a homicide, no way was she letting vice steal this case from her, even if it was Tess.

“Burke sent me, he’s got this theory that,” Tessa trailed off and shook her head, “Well it doesn’t matter. This doesn’t look like a vice case so I’ll leave it in your hands. Send me a copy of the autopsy if there’s evidence of drugs.”

Sarah nodded slowly, narrowing her eyes in slight distrust. Tessa smiled and excused herself, promising to text her later so they could get together for drinks. Sarah waited until she was out of sight before turning back to the crime scene, her crime scene.

She carefully stepped around the evidence markers of the floor, making sure not to taint anything or get in the way of the CSI team. She stopped in front of the body and looked towards the coroner, Dr. Lindsey, as he examined the victim.

“First thoughts?” Sarah questioned, pulling her notebook from her pocket and writing down her own first impressions of the scene.

“He was stabbed.”

“Obviously.” Sarah deadpanned, looking up from her notebook to examine the body herself.

The man was still sat in his desk, the blood on his clothes and the floor had dried a while ago. A pair of scissors stuck out of his chest, a dozen more stab wounds around it and in his stomach. His previously crisp suit had been torn into ribbons, his once white shirt stained red.

“Based on the degree of vigor, factoring in room temp, I’d say the time of death is somewhere between 10 and 1am.” Lindsey stated, leaning back on his heels, Sarah nodded and noted it in her book. “I’ll be able to give you a more precise time once I have him on the table.”

“Thanks, Lindsey.” Sarah gave him a stiff smile before taking a turn around the room to study more of the crime scene.

Bloody shoe prints lead to the door then stopped, Sarah suspected the killer had noticed the trail they were leaving and taking their shoes off. She ordered one of the CSI guys to sweep the hallway and neighboring offices a second time in the hopes that maybe they’d get lucky. There was blood splatter across the desk and window which wasn’t particularly odd given the violence of the stabbing.

Outside the office, Sarah searched around for Hudson, finally finding her at the receptionist’s desk interviewing the woman sitting there. She tapped her shoulder and beckoned her over.

“The assistant?”

“No, I already got her. I told her she could go home and we’d call her in if we needed her. Now I’m just going through everyone.” Hudson answered and gestured to the hallway. “He was apparently close with another lawyer, a John Duncan. They got into a fight over a case a few days ago, it ended with threats from both parties.”

“Thanks, I’ll go talk to him.” With the help of one of the other officers there, she was pointed towards the correct office. The door was closed so Sarah knocked before opening it. “John Duncan?” She asked, stepping into the office.

The man in question was hunched over his desk reading over a very thick file. “John Seed actually. I’ll be with you in a moment, detective,” He didn’t bother looking up from the file, Sarah glared at him and stepped completely into the room.

She didn’t stop until her legs knocked against the edge of his desk, crossing her arms and looking down at him. When John still didn’t look away from his file, Sarah reached forward and pulled it from his desk before he could stop her, flipping it shut and dropping it onto one of the chairs facing his desk.

John glared up at her, crossing his arms and leaning back. The room was silent as they both stared each other down, only breaking eye contact so he could look her up and down a few times.

“What can I help you with, detective?” He asked with mock curiosity as if he didn’t already know why she was there.

“Your coworker was murdered, Mr. Seed, and according to witnesses you had an altercation with Mr. Horne earlier this week.” Sarah pulled her notebook from her pocket again, waiting to write down his statement.

“Verbal altercation.” He corrected her, a slightly smug look on look on his face. “Eliot and I simply had a difference of opinions on the case we’re both working.”

“Way I heard it, it was more than just a difference of opinions. Threats were made so it doesn’t look too good for you right now.”

“Yes, he threatened to get me fired if I didn’t go along with his approach to the case. So I threatened to expose his affairs with his assistant and our receptionist, I’m sure Ms. Watts and Ms. Vasquez left that out of their statements.” He leaned back in his chair, his voice dripping with all the charisma of a lawyer of his fortitude.

Sarah wasn’t an idiot, she’d heard his name in the news before. He was young, handsome, and had been winning quite a few cases lately so his name came up in law circles quite often. The DA’s office had apparently been eyeing him to fill the position left by their last ADA but he’d politely turned them down for Sutherland Wells.

“Do you have an alibi for last night, Mr. Seed?” Sarah asked, tapping her pen against the notebook.

“Yes,” He leaned forward with a sly smile and launched into the details of the party he’d been at the night before. Sarah rolled her eyes but wrote it all down, not at all impressed. This was going to be a long interview.

Sarah looked up from her computer as Whitehorse called her into his office. As she walked towards his office she prepared to defend herself for not having any leads on Horne case. It’d been two days since she’d visited the crime scene and without any concrete suspects, she was just waiting on the coroner’s report. John Seed had been at the top of her list for all of an hour before his alibi was confirmed.

She stepped into the office, shutting the door behind her. Someone else sat in one of the chairs in front of his desk and she assumed it was a member of the brass there to chew her out as well.

“Sir I’m just waiting on the Horne autopsy, I swear it’s still my top priority.” Sarah quickly said, wanting to get ahead of the lecture she was dreading.

“That’s not why I called you in, though I am disappointed in the lack of suspects.” He gestured for Sarah to take a seat in the remaining empty chair and clasped his hands. She sat down and glanced sideways at the man beside her, her eyes widening when she recognized John Seed, smug grin and all.

“Lamb, you remember our chat about getting you a new partner?”

“Yes. What is Mr. Seed doing here?” She quickly asked, in no mood to beat around the bushes.

“He is very invested in finding the killer of Mr. Horne and has offered his services as a consultant, for free.”

“I’m always looking for ways to help, Captain.” John offered, he actually sounded sincere but Sarah didn’t believe it for a second.

“What does this have to do with me?” She asked slowly, already dreading where this conversation was going.

“He’s going to be your partner on this case.”

“Excuse me?” Sarah looked between the two in shock. “Captain he’s a civilian. He’s not cleared to go out there with me. Besides he was a suspect originally.”

“I was cleared immediately.” John pointed out and Sarah sent him a cold glare.

“He’s already been cleared by Mayor Minkler and the brass. It’s just a temporary situation, Lamb, until this case gets solved.” Whitehorse left no room for objections, silence Sarah when she opened her mouth to speak. Sarah sat there in shocked silence for a few more minutes as Whitehorse went over some of the finer details, abruptly standing when she was dismissed.

She stiffly walked back to her desk, not making eye contact with anyone, and dropped gracelessly into her chair.

“Fuck this.” She muttered and pulled the Horne casefile from her desk. John’s tattooed hand appeared in her vision and she smacked it away. “What?” She snapped, looking up at him.

“I was trying to be polite and shake your hand.” He raised his hands in mock surrender, his face a perfect mask of innocence. “Your captain said I could sit at this desk while I helped you on this.” He said, sitting down in the desk directly facing her’s. It had been Tessa’s up until her transfer and right now Sarah was really wishing that she hadn’t.

“Good for you.” She muttered and looked back down at her casefile. She jerked her head up when she felt more than saw him get closer. “What are you doing?”

“Reading the casefile or least attempting to.” He said, his voice tight with what Sarah could only assume was frustration. She glared at him, she could tell him to get his own copy but then she’d likely be forced to fill out all the paperwork. Instead, she huffed and pushed the file towards him.

“Just don’t fuck it up, it’s the original.” She practically snarled and he gave her a clearly practiced wounded look before taking it.

Sarah crossed her arms and leaned back, narrowing her eyes and sizing him up. She wasn’t sure what to make of the lawyer. From what she’d heard from the few detectives who’d met him while testifying in court, he was supposed absolutely charming. Sarah, however, couldn’t get past his cocky attitude. She didn’t give a shit how attractive he was of if he had legs for days and eyes blue enough to drown in. He was a pompous ass who thought he was all that.

Yet he also seemed genuinely invested in this case. She’d read about his charity work in the news and while she wanted to just write it off as a publicity stunt from what she’d heard during his interviews he seemed to genuinely enjoy it. He seemed to genuinely care about people.

“It’s rude to stare, you know,” John said without looking up from the file, Sarah could see a ghost of a smirk on his lips. “You should take a picture, it’ll last longer.”

“The day I willingly do that Staci should check me into the psych ward. Unless it’s for your mugshot, then I’ll happily take your picture.” She gave him a sour smile. John returned her unhappy smile with a clearly forced one of his own.

“I am looking forward to our partnership, detective,” John said, his voice dripping with swagger and for a second Sarah was tempted to smack the smirk off his face. She'd be professional for once and save that for after they'd finished this case.
