A solidly made if occasionally formulaic film, Tobias Lindholm's A War centers on Claus (Pilou Asbæk), a Danish officer, who while leading a detachment of his men in an assault on the Taliban, calls in an air strike on what he believes to be the source of the gunfire that has pinned them down and left one of his soldiers critically injured. Under cover of the bombing they are able to make it to the rescue helicopter, but Claus is later charged with a war crime: There is no evidence that the gunfire came from the village where the bombing killed civilians, women and children. At the trial, held back in Denmark, Claus is acquitted after one of his men perjures himself, claiming that he had seen a muzzle flash from the village, justifying Claus's decision. But it's not a "happy ending." The film has provided many emotional justifications for Claus's action: We earlier saw Lasse (Dulfi Al-Jabouri), the critically injured man whose life Claus saves by calling in the air strike, in extreme emotional distress after witnessing the death of one of his fellow soldiers who stepped on a landmine. Claus had comforted Lasse, but nevertheless insisted that he go on this near-fatal mission. Claus also struggles with guilt because he had turned away an Afghan family seeking refuge in the military compound: They had been threatened by the Taliban after they sought medical help for their little girl, suffering from a bad burn. Reconnoitering for the assault, Claus discovers that the Taliban had made good on their threat and slaughtered the family. Claus is also struggling with pressure from home, where his wife, Maria, is having trouble looking after their three small children. Writer-director Lindholm beautifully balances the combat scenes with those depicting Maria's difficulties at home. His acquittal comes at the expense of a witness's lie, and there are hints that Claus will never be free of the burden of guilt. Tucking in his own children at night, Claus carefully pulls the blanket over the exposed feet of one child. It's a moment that echoes the earlier scene in which Claus discovers the slaughtered Afghan family: A dead child's feet were similarly protruding  from the covers, a detail that Lindholm smartly trusts the audience to recall.

The official trailer for the movie Valhalla, based on Peter Madsen’s legendary comic books is already looking so damn epic. Rolland Møller (”Papillon”) plays Thor, where Dulfi Al-Jabouri (”Darkland”) plays Loki, with Fenar Ahmad (”Darkland”) instructing. Andreas Jessen is also playing Balder, and that’s gotta be a good choice right there.

I’m really excited for this movie, for several reasons:

Fenar Ahmad is a Danish filmmaker with Iraqi origins, so having him tell a story about Norse mythology is bound to be incredibly interesting and a breath of fresh air in saturated story-telling.

Dulfi Al-Jabouri is an Iraqi refugee who came to Denmark in 1996, and having him play Loki was something that stirred the pot when it was announced and I’m just sat here so THRILLED that he’s going to be portraying the God of Mischief, like yass, give it to me.

Roland Møller is like the perfect guy to play Thor and nothing would ever convince me otherwise (like what a prime example of overcoming your past and becoming an iconic character???)

Røskva, the human young girl is the key to the story, and I’m like! Fantasy! With! Young! Girl! As! Key! GIVE IT TO ME

Underverden/Darkland (2017)

Rendet rakós akciódráma dán módra. Akárhogy szerettem volna az R-Nordwest-Kapringen vonalba sajnos nem áll be, ugyanis nem a felvetés, hanem a végrehajtás a lényeg ebben a filmben. Mégis, valahogy van varázsa.

Więźniowie nienawiści. Francuska "Nienawiść" z 1995 roku, jego spadkobierca, czyli "Nędznicy" Ladja Ly z 2019 roku, a teraz duński "Shorta" (co w języku arabskim oznacza policjanta) to zapiski z centrów wielonarodowych i wielokulturowych tygli, ogromnych osiedli z przedmieść (w ten nawias łapie się jeszcze kilka wybitnych filmów na czele z Rób, co należy Spike'a Lee). W "Shorta" mamy do czynienia z historią, którą można dzisiaj umiejscowić w każdym zakątku na ziemi, a którą można odczytać jako bezpośrednie nawiązanie do wydarzeń z amerykańskiego poletka i zamieszek wybuchających bezpośrednio po brutalnych aktach przemocy municypalnych. Dwójka policjantów Jens i Mike zaczynają kolejny dzień służby. W regionie jest nerwowo, bo w szpitalu przebywa 19-letni Talib, który walczy o życie po "wizycie" na komisariacie. Na osiedlach wrze, młodzi chcą odwetu. Gdy w eterze pada informacja, że chłopak zmarł, para gliniarzy jest akurat w getcie Svalegården niedaleko Kopenhagi.

Reżyserki duet, czyli Anders Ølholm i Frederik Louis Hviid powinni dostać przede wszystkim nagrodę za wykorzystanie mikro budżetu w taki sposób, że film wygląda jak naszpikowany akcją wysokobudżetowy dramat policyjny kręcony w Hollywood. I chociaż jako widzowie jesteśmy świadomi, gdzie te braki budżetowe były, twórcy bardzo sprytnie wyszli z każdej technicznej opresji. Jednak nie technikalia i środki formalne są tu najważniejsze, a temat i emocje tak mocno sprzężone z akcją, jak w mało którym filmie. Anders Ølholm i Frederik Louis Hviid nie podpalają jednak nastrojów, nie kamienują i nie osaczają oskarżanych. Głównych sprawców dramatycznych wydarzeń ze wspomnianym Talibem nie zobaczymy nawet na ekranie, co również jest znamienne. Wszystko bowiem jest reakcją na określone działania czy to policji, czy to drugiej strony. Owszem, stróże prawa powinni wykazać się profesjonalizmem i być odporniejsi na stres niż dzieciak, którego roznosi energia. "Shorta" pokazuje jednak dwie strony medalu, chociaż wydarzenia skupiają się na dwójce gliniarzy na służbie w nieprzyjaznej dla nich okolicy przy napiętej atmosferze. Wykorzystując jednak komentarz społeczny do budowania wątków twórcy mówią wprost, że to nie dana narodowość, czy też municypalni są, pisząc kolokwialnie, źli, a konkretna osoba, sfrustrowany policjant, lub kryminalista po drugiej strony barykady. "Shorta" prezentuje cały ciąg złożonych problemów i choćby pod tym względem, poddając wiele z elementów pod dyskusję, powinien być znany szerszej publiczności.

Bardzo dużą, pozytywną rolę odegrał tu casting, ale idąc dalej dość odważne decyzje co do prowadzenia fabuły. W połowie zmienia się perspektywa, do głosu dochodzi drugoplanowy bohater, który ma szansę się zrehabilitować, dostrzec swoje błędy. Narracja "Shorty" to ciągłe napięcie i krótki lont w dynamicie, ale też wiara w człowieka i słuszne przeświadczenie o tym, że należy brać odpowiedzialność za swoje czyny. Jeżeli już prawimy truizmy w stylu "punkt widzenia zależy od siedzenia" bądźmy konsekwentni. "Shorta" to film uczciwy, a przez to bardzo wiarygodny. Nie odkrywa wszystkich tajemnic bohaterów, bazuje na niedomówieniach, pozwala zachować wiele niuansów pod kilkoma warstwami fabuły. Pisząc również "nic nie jest tylko czarne albo tylko białe" można wskazać najważniejszy element "Shorty". Energiczny, ale też wrażliwy, bo dotyczy ludzi skrzywdzonych, którzy budują skorupy w reakcji na sytuację. To jeden z lepszych i ważniejszych europejskich filmów ostatnich lat, z siłą kina niezależnego i z aspiracjami, by stanąć u boku największych tytułów. Potrafi być przemocowy, ale środki wyrazu czemuś służą, a wszystkie sytuacje trawią się naturalnym ogniem. Nikt tu nie dolewa benzyny, a pozwala spokojnie wypalić się problemowi...

Valhalla

Today's the day, 'Valhalla' is releasing in Danish theaters!!

The movie is a filmatization of the legendary comicbook series by Peter Madsen, which has achieved cult status in Denmark.

It's been translated to English, and has been adapted into an animated movie in the past:

Now you're probably wondering, why the excitement about a movie depicting Norse Mythology?!

Because of this:

The man holding the monitor is Fenar Ahmad. He is better known for directing Darkland, which is about a successful doctor who loses his little brother in a gang-related assault gives up his privileged life to become a masked warrior and avenge his brother's death. (Basically! Frank Castle in Copenhagen!)

But not only that.

Fenar Ahmad was born in 1981 in Czechoslovakia to immigrant Iraqi parents. Which means, he is not the classical Norse Mythology fanboy, and I can't wait to see how he deals with the Mythology in his movie. He's super gifted and he's amazing and I am beyond excited to see this movie.

BUT NOT ONLY THAT!!!

Roland Møller plays Thor! He played alongside Rami Malek in Papillon, and he's such a fun guy too, but more than anything, I can't wait to see a portrayal of Thor that shows him (more properly) as the absolute arrogant ass he is/was and Møller is the perfect choice for the casting.

I mean, he even has Norse tattoos that Ahmad asked him to keep uncovered because it fit the Aesthetic so well.

(AND LOOK AT MJOLNIR!!! She looks regal!!!)

A War

IED’s might well be the scourge of the battlefield, but as dramatic narrative devices in films, they’ve become absolutely indispensable. Directors have used their suddenness and destruction to build their tension points and to dramatically alter the narrative landscape. In films like The Hurt Locker and Land of Mine, they are specifically used to take out presumably major characters as a way of throwing the audience off-guard (in the latter, especially, the continued use of the mine explosions becomes for both the characters and the audience, a jarring taste of chaotic violence that produces a kind of negative-pavlovian effect – you leave the theater with a kind of PTSD).

Those sorts of contorted dramatic swirls are not much on the far more subdued palette of Danish director Tobias Lindholm, whose previous film, A Hijacking, took an essentially dramatic idea – a tanker getting taken over by a group of Nigerian pirates – and fascinatingly reduced it down to a business negotiation over the course of several long months. His one use of an IED, very early in the film, isn’t to set off a series of increasingly tense swells, but instead to set in motion far more subtle character interplays. He is for war movies what Lou Reed is to pop music, taking what he needs and re-contextualizing it for his own purposes.

When we first meet Claus Michael Pederdsen (Lindholm muse Pilou Asbæk), the CO of a Danish army unit in Afghanistan, it’s to try and help a troubled soldier, Lasse (Dulfi Al-Jabouri) get over the loss of his friend from the IED. He shows Lasse a great deal of compassion, allowing him to stay in camp for a couple of weeks and avoid patrols until he can get his head straight again. To further show Pedersen’s decency and dedication, he tells his next-in-command, Najib (Dar Salim), that he’ll be going out on more patrols to help make up for Lasse’s absence.

If that weren’t enough, we also get to see Pedersen’s family back in Denmark, his loving, dedicated wife, Maria (Tuva Novotny), caring for their three young children, and get a sense of how much he’s missing by being on the frontlines. This makes the film all the more densely textured when, later on, a frenzied Pedersen, desperate to get a badly wounded Lasse extricated when under heavy fire in an Afghan village, orders an air strike over a part of the compound without first clearly identifying where the enemy fire is originating. The subsequent bombing works to get his men out of trouble, and Lasse to a hospital, but it also results in a large number of civilian casualties, which earns him a trip from the judge advocate’s office and, eventually, a court tribunal. 

He can claim he was certain of the enemy’s PID, and likely avoid conviction, but Pedersen, a man previously shown to be of valor and honor, can’t say with any certainty that it was the case. He needed to get his men out of there, calling the airstrike on an uncleared target was the quickest and most brutally efficient way to do so.

It’s at this point in the narrative that we understand precisely what Lindholm is going for here: Pedersen, for all his compassion and decency, is put in a position where he has to deceive the jury, or face a lengthy prison time. In war, one can either be honorable, or one can stay out of danger, but not likely both.

Utilizing his lo-fi, quasi-Dogme style – including natural lighting, handheld cameras, and natural dialogue – Lindholm plays down the more dramatic elements of war and presents us with a relatively simple ethical quandary. We pull for Pedersen to be cleared of charges because Lindholm has deftly made us care for him and his family, but we also understand his order saved his men but doomed many innocents, including a number of children. There are no winners, here in other words, no matter the outcome of the case, a great tragedy has taken place, and there is no justice to be found.
