No Emily , what Will said does not apply to El as well. El doesn’t need Mike like that , and that’s okay. Does it mean she loves Mike any less or that she doesn’t want him in her life ? Of course not. But s4 was literally her journey to independence , finally growing out of her insecurities of being needed and wanted by Mike only because of her powers.

And that is literally why Will lying about his feelings , disguising them as El’s for the greater good , and Mike finding out about the painting are going to be MAJOR plot lines in s5.

Like ain’t no way I got told that I’m making shit up and I’m trying to say that Will needs Mike while El doesn’t.

El definitely wants Mike in her life , but the point is that Will NEEDS Mike in the way Mike wants to be needed. And I don’t even say this with shipping in mind , but that is just a matter of fact and why the painting plot line is still so important. Will is the one seeing Mike as his protector , as a though and throughout paladin. Like the cast said many times , it’s Will who wishes to play dnd and Nintendo in Mike’s basement with him for the rest of his life. And that’s okay , that doesn’t take away anything from El’s feelings like some people make it want to seem like.

Two things can coexist at once because El and Will love Mike in two different ways , and what Mike needed to hear steams from his own depression and self worth issues.

That is why the van scene and Will’s lies are so important. Because Mike IS DEFINITELY, without any kind of doubt , going to discover that the painting is Will’s. How things will unfold after that can only be known by the duffer brothers as of now , but it is a fact that the kind of love Mike wants is the one that Will can provide him.

Does it mean that I’m trying to say that El doesn’t love Mike and Will is some damn of damsel in distress that always needs saving ??? No, and I know for a fact Will can stand his own as well and actually appreciates when he doesn’t get treated as something delicate going to fall apart any time soon.

Does this also mean that Melvin is bones ? Girl I don’t fucking know and I don’t fucking care. Does this also mean that byler is endgame and El’s feelings don’t matter ? No and I don’t fucking know how Mike will react to the truth.

But some people are watching the show without even getting the meaning of the characters’ actions and it baffles me I’m so serious rn

I was just watching TikTok and when a Rockie/Byler parallel edit appear i decided to read the comments, only to find out that there's still many people who still thinks that Will's not in love with Mike and that he only want to be friends with Mike like before.

I was literally like this:

There were even comments explaining that it's basically canon and confirm by the Duffers and even by the freaking actors, AND THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE THEM. Like bro, there's like many interviews were this is confirm and you're still doubting????

This might very well have been obvious to some fans watching, though with how little it's talked about, I get the impression most brushed off the billboard altogether, and so I felt the need to point this detail out.

Also, here's a time-lapse with the artist who painted it:

Clearly there was indeed intention going into this billboard, and considering the context of the scene, it makes a lot of sense.

What we get is El walking off towards the billboard almost curiously. Upon walking over we see a few cars drive past, which we only know because the sound of cars passing in the background, along with their headlights shining on our characters standing outside of the gas station.

As these cars drive past, we get two distinct moments where the headlights cause Will to have a perfect shadow behind him aka twin imagery.

And this is simultaneously being juxtaposed with El looking at this family on this billboard? It's worth noting that the billboard is very warn out, obviously to give the effect that it's been there for years, though it also creates this feeling of anonymity to the people in the painting itself, specifically the father who is warn out almost completely, while the rest of the family is turned around and so we couldn't see their faces even if we wanted to (though the women/mother is definitely giving off Joyce vibes...).

El then proceeds to have a flashback of Terry and Billy and her experiences in previous seasons interacting with them in the void. This is then what inspires El to just piggyback off of Max to get into Henry's mind basically.

Fascinating right?

But it gets better.

look I wasn't shipping byler before season 4 I was just there watching rooting for my Will to be happy for once and then the freaking writers decided to put that awful half hug in season 4 and made it clear that my boy would be happy only with Mike so I ended up here hoping for that before volume two... DO YOU KNOW THE AMOUNT OF STRESS THEY GAVE TO ME WITH THIS CHOICE I would have preferred for Will to have a crush on a freaking random boy and be already happy in season 4 but the Duffers teased byler and now the only real happy ending for Will IS byler! any other choice they can make has part of a heartbreak in it because Will is in love with Mike he's not just having a freaking random crush he knows Mike better than anyone else and he loves him and Mike gives him courage and makes him keep fighting and makes him feel like he's not a mistake at all!!!! like he's BETTER for being different... and you want to tell me that Will can be all happy after Mike tells him "no homo bro but you're still my bestie even if you're gay" ???? obviously no because it's not realistic, he will be heartbroken like he was heartbroken hearing Mike saying I love you to El... like he is already because he thinks Mike loves El and has decided to bury his own feelings for Mike forever! they decided to write the story like this and now yeah I will be pissed off if the resolution for Will is just him coming out and people telling him yeah it's ok... like... c'mon WE KNOW THEY ALL WILL LOVE HIM AND ACCEPT HIM that is so anticlimactic! We know he's gay from this season, we know the characters so we ALL know he will be loved by every single one of them even if he's gay... we know Mike will not be homophobic to Will because Finn told us... what's the story here?????? ok ok ok . so for as short of a time as we got billy - we got a LOT of characterization for him. like, even with max, we didn't get that much characterization. why? was it dacre? i lean more towards yes than i would contribute that being w the duffers tbh. back to my point - that backstory is legitimately one of the most intriguing characters i've seen in a long time. and there's so much to play with there! he's not just your typical cardboard "bully" -- THERE'S MEAT ON THAT SKELETON, you know?!?

ohhhhh i love all of them, because they all feel like... they're common enough for me to get the gist of him, but the way different people write him is so interesting! i think my most favorite is that billy's gay. there's a few where i've read post-s3 where he's disabled from the mind flayer and THOSE are SO GOOD.

This is the Buddy for April 7th. I wanted to draw Buddy as a car, but that turned out to be too hard, so I made him a 1986 Toyota Camry instead.

I have a weird nostalgic appreciation for those dorky-looking "cars" from the 1980ies that look more like lego pieces than like aerodynamic vehicles. It's like one of those things that are so lame, they roll back into being cool again.

Cars like that one often make appearances in movies about the eighties by the likes of Nicolas W. Refn and Panos Cosmatos (as well as in the Duffer Bros.' Stranger Things show). And I do like all of those - I gotta give some due to Stranger Things, even though it's produced by Shawn Levy, whom I insulted yesterday - but it's funny how they try to paint the eighties as a cool era of neon lights and long-exposure photography, when the movies from the actual decade were cheap-looking, tacky messes of bright day scenes and choppy edits.

Cosmatos' wikipedia page mentioned him saying his movies are based on looking at cool VHS boxes and imagining what the movies would be like. I don't know, but, I think if he saw the actual movies, he'd be kind of disappointed. I know I was, when I first started watching Joe Dante's Explorers. That movie felt less like Stranger Things and more like an episode of Family Matters.

Just goes to show, nostalgia's often better than the thing itself.

Couple of things in response to your anon queries over the last few days:

- Joe’s playing a prominent recurring character in Fargo. He’s Gator Tillman, the son of the main character, corrupt sheriff Roy Tillman (John Hamm). You’ll be getting more than one episode, don’t worry about that! Also - and I’m sorry if you already know this, but just to clarify- it’s not set in 2019, not the old west. I think people got the cowboy idea because Noah Hawley wrote an (excellent) article for The Atlantic called “It’s High Noon in America,” which was both a political commentary, and a reflection on how entertainment contributes to issues like distrust of authority by creating heroes who go against the system etc. In it, he shared a sample of S5 dialogue between Roy and Gator, which mentioned “high noon”:

Gator: “I swear to God, him versus me, man to man, and I'd wipe the floor with him.”

Roy: “What, like high noon? That only happens in the movies, son. In real life they slit your throat waiting for the light to change.”

I mean, Joe might still be playing a cowboy-ish type character if he works on a ranch I suppose? But as far as I know, there’s nothing to suggest that’s the case.

- Joe is well positioned to have a great career after ST ends. I’m a bit puzzled as to why anyone’s concerned for him to be honest! Free Guy was very well received and many reviews specifically mentioned Joe’s charm and his lovely chemistry with Jodie. One critic even said - and I quote - “Joe Keery proves he’s going to be just fine when Stranger Things ends.” Add to that, although Spree was controversial, it was still received more positive reviews than less glowing ones (thanks, tomatometer), and even negative reviews of the film praised Joe’s performance.

So that’s recent history. Looking at his current work, he has two films in the can, is currently filming Fargo, then starts Cold Storage, and then in 2024 goes back to filming ST. The guy is as busy as an actor could hope for. Going forward, even if none of the films make an impact (and that’s a big ‘if’, because I suspect Cold Storage at least is going to do very well), Fargo will raise his profile even higher than it already is.

Oh, and then there’s his music. We all know he’s genuinely talented in that regard, and so do the critics. But he’s deliberately flown under the radar with it, and so many people are missing out. Djo doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page for crying out loud. Maya Hawke, who has less than a third of the Spotify listeners Djo has, has a wiki page for each album! No hate for Maya - her stuff’s not my thing but it’s cool. I just think Joe’s music manager (who’s different to his acting one) is sleeping on that front.

Sorry for the Joe Keery essay. I’m just a huge supporter because he’s so talented, and is also genuinely lovely. People who’ve worked with him want to do it again, in large part because of his personality. We know the combination of those traits is what changed the trajectory of his character in ST, which was a remarkable thing in of itself. David Harbour, Brett Gelman, and Kevin Pollack have all pointed out how unusual it was, and praised both Joe and the Duffer Bros for it. It’s kind of refreshing to see someone in Hollywood getting rewarded for being a decent person, in addition to having acting abilities.

Joe deserves every success. Long may it continue!

He’s sprawled out on a lumpy mattress on a trash strewn floor, and when he turns his head with a strained groaned he sees that Patrick is sprawled out next to him. Lucas sits up slowly, pushing himself upright on shaky elbows. He looks around, watching as other party goers in similar states of distress blink awake, or help stumbling friends out the front door. Lucas’ stomach heaves and he jumps up, nearly tripping over his own feet as he makes his ungainly way to the bathroom.

AMY!! this has just made my little heart triple in size and burst. I don't even know what to say, this is so ridiculously kind and thoughtful and means so much to me. I've loved getting notifications this week each day seeing where you've got up to on the master list 🥹

I'm so glad you love my version of Eddie! I've never done fanfic before and hadn't written fiction since I was like 16 in school. Then I watched Stranger Things for the first time last year just before S4 Pt2 and was just ??? so awestruck with Eddie's character in a way I just have never been before and I'm 24! I felt like a little kid again. I got plenty of beef with Duffer bros but they really did something with Eddie and I'm not even sure they realised what they did but regardless it was just perfect and obviously Joseph Quinn's characterisation is a big part of it.

I just felt so invested in him and found myself reading fanfic for the first time ever. Then I made the Tommy post as a joke because I didn't like everyone thinking my precious baby Eddie would like him. Then I stuck with it and it's been so fun. I think Eddie throughout the show is continually shown as someone who's always felt lost and wishing for a real family and in turn seeks out those who seem lost to give them a family. And yeah I just wanted to give him that!

Writing it has been so fun and emotional and same, it makes me sad because I kind of created a dream man and relationship. It hits hard because Eddie is so in need of love and so full of it. So I write how I would want to be loved.

Love, Lola is like an alternate version of rockstar Eddie. If maybe things didn't work out so smoothly and he has to wait a little longer for his happy ending but it's okay because he will get it!
