the thing about tawny man is that by the end, fitz was So Ready to finally accept his love for beloved, to at last and for the first time lean into his own truth and believe it for what it was, only for beloved to reject him just as he was turning the corner
and beloved didnt mean to!! they didnt think they were rejecting fitz, they thought they were saving him. what they saw was fitz once again attempting to mold himself into the shape that one he cares about might find acceptable, the same thing he did for burrich, for chade, for verity. and beloved would rather have no relationship at all than one where they knew that fitz was lying both to them and to himself the whole time
beloved thought if they left, then fitz would finally be free to be himself, unbeholden to expectations, but instead, they just showed fitz that his openness and vulnerability earned him nothing but pain

plot thing i articulated to myself. mostly about romance (i’ve been watching bridgerton). i’ve said before that good romance thrives on tension. tension comes from obstacles. if the only obstacles are a) miscommunication or b) one person’s stubbornness, it gets really grating really fast.

im noticing as i watch twt for the trillionth time that cooper moves his ears up n down but none of the funk trolls do, n i think that's a cute lil thing from being raised a pop troll bc pop trolls' ears are very expressive and funk's tend to just droop down naturally

Luffy vs. Zoro at Whiskey Peak
Unpopular opinion maybe, but the Luffy vs. Zoro clash in Whiskey Peak made sense for their characters. You could even argue that it was bound to happen, given their personalities.
Luffy likes the people who feed him. In the the face of their suffering, no matter who's responsible, he's too angry to concern himself with the reasons behind it. Zoro, on the other hand, prefers to handle things independently without saying much about it, especially if it means his crew gets to enjoy themselves a little longer
So it's not really surprising that Luffy would be blindsided by finding their hosts cut up by his swordsman, and that this would send him flying into a fit of rage. If he's never paused to listen to context or backstories before now, why would he start here? And of course, Zoro is not the type to back down from a challenge. He will match Luffy's energy and respond in kind
"But if Luffy were a good captain, he would have stopped to listen to Zoro's side of the story." Vivi tells him he's a bad captain two arcs later, precisely because of this kind of behavior. It clearly leaves an impression on Luffy, and we see he's grown into a better leader by the time he reaches Amazon Lily. (Almost as if Oda set all this development up on purpose with Whiskey Peak. HMM...)
"But Luffy refused to believe that Nami had killed Usopp in Arlong Park." This argument is like comparing apples to oranges. Nami did not actually do the murder that Johnny and Yosaku claim they saw, nor is she capable of killing people in cold blood. Of course Luffy isn't going to believe Nami killed Usopp based on hearsay. But in Whiskey Peak, Zoro did cut those bounty hunters. Luffy sees the evidence for himself, and he knows the carnage Zoro is capable of inflicting once he puts his mind to it. There is no denying what happened. Nothing other than Zoro saying "someone else did this" (or Nami knocking the soul out of him) was going to stop Luffy from going ballistic
"Why would Luffy fight so hard to recruit Zoro into his crew, firmly believing that he wasn't a bad person, only to later attack him because he believed Zoro was capable of harming 'innocent' people?" Because the fight was never about whether their hosts were "innocent" or not, not really. Their fight was about what Zoro did (assaulting the ones who fed them), and how those actions made Luffy feel (mad as hell, because these people FED THEM) For Luffy, context did not actually matter at that moment in time because, for him, "they fed me" unequivocally means "they're my friend", full stop This is even shown again in Mocktown! Both when Luffy unquestioningly eats an apple from Doc Q, and when Bellamy buys Luffy a drink in Mocktown. In the first case, Luffy only lived because he was lucky. And in the second case, he assumes Bellamy is a good person despite all evidence to the contrary, only to have his face brutally smashed into the bartop by Bellamy. Luffy is shockingly bad at reading people who try to feed him.
Luffy has interpersonal conflicts with all the core members from East Blue at different times. The fight with Zoro is the only one instigated by Luffy. But surprisingly, their fight highlights their similarities instead of their differences. They still fight equally and work together against BW agents who try to interfere with their fight.
Tumblr media
I think that's what Oda wanted to showcase with this scene.
In short, Luffy's initial anger stemmed from his protectiveness towards those who have fed him, while Zoro's actions were driven by his dedication to the crew and subsequent refusal to back down from Luffy's challenge. It was a clash resulting from miscommunication and misunderstanding, something that is not typically a problem for them — until it suddenly becomes one When all is said and done, they're both quick to forgive and forget. This, too, is fitting for both their characters. From that point onward, Zoro continues to demonstrate that Luffy's trust is not misplaced. And Luffy never, ever doubts Zoro again after this

ok i wasnt gonna do it i told myself no im just not gonna say anything on this drama but this is so MINDBOGGLING that i HAVE to make a post about this
i am gonna start by saying as someone on the arospectrum i personally see peridot as either fully aroace or arospec (i like headcanoning either one) and as in a qpr or plantonic friendship with lapis.
peridot has been confirmed to be intended to be read as aroace by a storyboard artist (maya peterson) that would focus on her character, i am not denying that,
however
she is also confirmed to be intended to be read as experiencing romantic attraction, by the OTHER storyboard artist who originally worked on peridot, jesse zuke, who has just as much authority to talk about peridots character, if not more since (to my knowledge) she was the original main storyboard artist for peridot
the intention behind what peridot is suppose to represent is fundamentally contradictory, there is absolutely no use fighting over it. this is so dumb to fight over YES both sides have been confirmed canon THATS WHY THIS IS DUMB </33
ive been trying to find as many actual sources as i can (which has been pretty difficult since A LOT has been deleted) but I finally found a transcript of one of jesse zukes posts that is deleted that everyone keeps referencing
Tumblr media
from this reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/5q738i/lauren_zuke_speaks_of_her_intention/
(jesse was formerly known as lauren)
anyone posts something shipping peridot, u get a load of comments saying "this is aroace erasure, shes written as aroace, a storyboard artist said so", anyone posts something about peridot being canonically aroace, u get a load of comments saying "shes not canonically aroace, she was written as experiencing romantic attraction, a storyboard artist said so" everyone is either one or the other it seems like NO ONE is acknowledging that both is true and really this confusion is the fault of the crewniverse ????
these storyboard artists BOTH focused heavily on working on peridot and creating her character, and their intentions behind what she is are completely contradicting.
i would love for peridot to be aroace. to me she IS aroace, but im not going to pretend like this isnt the most confusing most unclear way of confirming that. even if maya peterson intended for her to be seen as aroace, jesse zuke wrote her as the complete opposite and it would be stupid of me to ignore that. harassing eachother over this is stupid. your both correct, now shake hands and make peace with eachother lol, good night.
As an arospec person I am completely fine with people shipping peridot and I do not think it is aroace erasure, because while I would love to see an orientation like mine depicted in a character like peridot, im not going to ignore that fact the she was ALSO originally meant to be read as experiencing romantic attraction AND the fact that many of the crewniverse ships peridot with people or supports others doing it. it is not aroace erasure to ship a character that was literally intended to be read as experiencing romantic attraction by some of the people who worked on her character. rebecca god damn sugar, the creator of steven universe has made fanart shipping peridot. peridots voice actor has said she likes and supports people shipping peridot. its just that different people working on the show had wildly different intentions when creating her character, and didnt clear up a solid identity for her with everyone working on her
jesse zuke said in her post "cant speak for anyone else! many people are writing those episodes". just like if maya peterson and anyone else working on peridot intended for her to be read as aroace, other people working on her character with just as much authority were writing her completely differently. people are not seeming to acknowledge that these two things co-exist. it is not one or the other. even though they are complete opposites, somehow theyve made it so that its both at once.
she was simultaneously written to be both aroace and experiencing romantic attraction by different people writing her character, clearly because of miscommunication within the crewniverse.
heres rebecca sugars ship art btw since the first 2 were really hard to find, in case anyone else wanted some sort of actual evidence of it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also just wanted to bring attention to jesse zuke saying "anyone who wants to see the narrative they want is completely, 100% allowed to". peridot and her episodes were written to have multiple interpretations. this was written with multiple intentions. some of those intentions were aroace, some of them, like jesse zukes, were not. you are all correct peace and love
update i found a slightly longer version of jesse zukes post in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=oIl1sEQ4_iI
"I wanted to close the book on this - I am queer, and intend fully to write queer characters when I do"
this is pretty clear confirmation that peridot was fully written with completely different ideas in mind from completely different people. jesse zuke INTENDED for peridot and lapis to be read as having a queer relationship, in this post shes encouraging people to read it that way, meanwhile other writers had other intentions which are just as real and valid.
inconsistency and messy production in steven universe is not a new thing

Kinda live for the concept of The beast and Enoch being so eldritch and completely separate from mortals that their ‘innuendos’ and inside jokes get completely lost in translation when mortals overhear. Like Enoch leans over to the beast and whispers some gibberish or weird saying that sounds completely innocent but the beast reacts absolutely scandalized for seemingly no reason or the beast makes some nothing comment and Enoch just starts to cackle as if he told a joke. X
Yooo your fics are crazy good x keep up the awesome work xx
It’s about the foreignity of expression! The familiarity of the passion!
Glad you enjoy!

As we are in Pride Month, I feel obligated to remind everyone that time cass (they/them) found out about "gender" (and also ADA. But that's for another thing.)
(In my fic)
“Old Lady say something Tan-Gen-De .” They carefully speaks it. “And Ey-Di-Ey.” Timmy push up. “Huh. That makes sense, actually.” His face do something weird.   “What's Eh-Di-Ey?” They want to know. They want to capture all the little words, like bags in a jar they can recognise for the next time. “ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act.” They blink. “It means they need to help people who need special help. Or they get in trouble with the law. So I told her that you needs help with reading and writing.”  Cass knows law. It's people with hammers and big white wigs. They think about Hammer-Man gives Old Lady a pencil and tell her to write for Cass.  It's a funny picture. “What's tan-gen-de ?” They ask. Timmy falls to the ground. “Fuck.” They look. He isn't injured. Just arm over his eyes. “Okay, we need to call Steph. I'm NOT giving ‘Queer Theory 101’ without her.”
~
So. Gender is like “boy” and “girl”, but not only. And when baby is born the doctor looks at private parts and decides.  “Girls” like pink and wear dresses and play dolls. “Boys” like blue and wear pants and play cars. But girls can also wear pants and like blue and play car, and boys can wear dresses and like pink and play with dolls and it's okay!   (Then why have this?.) Sometimes baby grow up and tell parents doctors were wrong. That doctor said they are girl, but actually they are boy. Or doctor said they are boy but they actually girl.   And that's “transgender”. Someone that doctors were wrong as a baby, and had to fix it.   (Or something like that.)
~
They still don't understand. “But it wasn't a baby,” they say. “No boy no girl. Just Weapon. So why tan-gen-de?” Purple and Timmy look sad hurt pain
But no injuries. They checked themselves, before. No blood or bruises or cracks in bones. Not even falling from the couch.
