random shit keeping me up at night:

steve has no plans other than working at family video for the rest of his life until he randomly goes with eddie, jeff and garet to la to check out some shady record deal they've been offered, because being a formerly wanted criminal and survivors of the infamous hawkins town disaster doesn't hurt your cred as a metal band. all ozzy did was bite the head off one little bat.

they've sent out a handful of tapes and some actually get picked up, even though everyone wants money just to take a meeting. steve is planning to plant his pretty ass down on venice beach for a week and do fuck all when he's approached by an excited looking punk girl asking if he's ever acted, modelled, anything? he has a look. he has the look for a project she's working on, she's co-director, would he be interested?

which is how steve harrington end up playing one of the lead roles as an undead jock in the worst b-rate horror flick you've ever seen. the kind that gets passed around at parties as joke. robin makes fun of it for the rest of his life, but he's the best thing in it and it puts him on the map. he's got natural charm and comedic timing, and the fact that he's basically playing himself and everyone adores working with him keeps landing him bigger roles.

meanwhile eddie cannot believe his awesome scream king boyfriend and the fact that he's casually hanging out with some of eddie's heroes. he's filming with john landis. cronenberg wants him for project. barbara crampton gushes about working with him. steve didn't even know who half these people were, is an unrepentant romcom fanboy. when asked by fangoria who he'd like to work with in the future he says john hughes, and everyone thinks its a really funny joke. only eddie knows how much of a dweeb steve really is.

corroded's kind of dead in the water at this point, but they've got a solid first album and steve is pretty close with the director he's working with at the moment, and the film is in development mainly off of steve's typecasting anyway. so steve is like "sammy, what about a psychadelic metal concept album running through the entire film?" and eddie's like "did you just call sam fucking raimi 'sammy'?" and sam is like "sure, set something up" *shrugs and goes back to writing about a demonic witch cult that steve's unassuming quarterback has to fight off with a cursed bible and a nail bat in a small town in iowa (some of which is steve's idea, thank you very much, its a collab for the ages)*

corroded coffin's soundtrack ends up a success, and much later a lauded cult classic. they get signed by someone who doesn't work out of a basement. steve is a hit, and its the first time he sees this many people dressed as a character he played for halloween, which is a trip. dustin sends him a pic from a party at his college wearing his now iconic letterman jacket and the bat and steve has genuinely never been as proud of anything he's worked on.

he lands a tiny part with about two lines as 'guy who gets face eaten' in a john carpenter film and john falls in love and makes him kurt russel's younger brother in a lovecraftian story about a a mysterious extraterrestrial force unleashed during a solar eclipse. eddie munson shakes kurt russels hand for about ten of the wildest seconds of his life at the premiere party. he'll score a song for john years later, and john will remember how much of a hyper fanboy he'd been that night and enough time will have passed thats it funny.

steve takes him to dinner with bruce campbell, who likes to call him kid apparently while steve tells him to fuck off, hes 8 years older and a dick, and apparently this is some injoke between them. eddie is dating a dude that has injokes with bruce campbell. eddie barely eats the entire time, just keeps about half a billion questions about every minute detail of evil dead to a minimum and lets the guy breathe. he's pretty sure bruce knows they're together, even though they dont go around announcing it, and he seems cool. he signs an autograph that eddie only feels a little mortified about asking for while steve rolls his eyes.

and steve is like i dont understand why me being a kickass point guard for three years didnt do shit for you but getting sprayed by a fuckton of fake blood in this terrible stephen king adaptation impresses you but ill take it.

eventually eddie composes a couple of songs solo for a scifi that does reasonably well and just leans fulltime into scoring. as a personal favor, john and him chainsmoke their way through a few collaborations on eddie's first and final solo record in the late 90's. it's indisputably his best work, and he tells steve he can die happy now.

This was an understandable and visible path for the series to tread, but it was done well. And personally, I always prefer something predictable but well-done over a sloppy twist.

Unlike above, this isn't something I could've predicted at all, but I'm eager to see how it goes. This is a quite frankly bonkers way for things to go and I'm so curious about what Slur's problem is.

Spy X Family wins "SatAM Hijinx"

This is some classic, feel-good nonsense. Everyone in this story is kinda stupid and that's a good thing.

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi wins "best sequence"

Hydrako only got one chapter, but she's fucking hilarious. This set of rapid-fire gags, her constant failures, seeing the sound effects literally go over her internal monologue... Failgirl supreme. Awesome.

Ichi The Witch wins "best tone shift"

Going from the gentle tension of Bakugami's backstory to... These two idiots, was hilarious. I hope this causes several problems forever.

Why does this get a chapter, but nothing for the ONE PIECE × the LA Lakers collab?

Akane-Banashi wins "best singular panel"

Issho is such an intriguing character, and this chapter just made me more curious about what his specialty - if he even has one - is. Current theory is that it's going to be the third story, so he has something to teach Akane.

Embers wins "Soft Power"

This is an excellent display both of Inanaki's breakdown and of Coach's power over the team. At no point in this interaction does it ever feel like she's on the back foot or out of her depth. She is in control, and she makes it clear.

Niall: Definitely not. They kept asking us questions that would make us answer it like that. Kind of like with [unintelligible], everyone thinks they’ve got a thing going on. Nah, we’re good mates. Just sat us down and interviewed us.

Sarah: I did hear you say that he plays you demos of his music before he takes it public. Was that true, or was that a lie?

Niall: No, that’s true, yeah. What’s wrong with that?

Sarah: Nothing! I just thought it’s amazing. We’re such big Shawn Mendes fans here. It was nice to see.

Just when I think I’ve seen the best bokuyaba episode, they just surpass my expectations with another. This might be my fave yet and the biggest step forward for Kyo and Anna!

Anna being in the spotlight as an idol means of course there’s going to be thirsty otaku who watch her every move. Kyo is right to be concerned about her wellbeing and causing issues for her. Like the dude who noticed that she was at someone else’s house in that IG pic!

Ramen stalker account was definitely creepy too so I don’t blame Kyo for making an account and trying to do research on em. When Ana fell in the water and the phone call got cut I almost thought we were gonna get an Oshi no Ko collab lmao. Thankfully it was all a big misunderstanding and it was just Yamada’s mom.

The fact Kyo couldn’t sleep or do anything without worrying about Anna’s safety was so cute. Even went to see her dad. Meanwhile Yamada was about to write an old fashioned letter to him just to let him know she was ok. They’re so damn cute. Biggest thing we got from that is now Anna’s mom and dad know what’s up between she and Kyo! I’m so proud of Kyo for straight up telling Anna’s dad how he felt!

'C'Mon' ft. fun.

Okay this is going to be really fun to talk about.

The story of fun. and PATD goes way back to September 2009, and I've done a painful amount of research into this that I didn't think would exist.

The band fun. had just finished touring with Paramore in May 2009, and were about to release their new album, Aim & Ignite, in August. Funnily enough, Washington Post compared the album to A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.

Think of some of the arrangements as theatrical, much like those on Panic at the Disco's 2005 debut, "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out," and you'll get the idea. - link to the article

Their first album was warmly recieved by critics, but it wasn't a smash international hit. That was yet to come for them.

In September 2009, Brendon would tweet out the following lyrics from the song 'Be Calm':

Brendon, you literally could not have related harder to the song where Nate wrote about anxiety and the lyric "After all, you lost your band, you left your mom." (the band Nate is referring to here is The Format, by the way).

Anyway...

Nate described the signing onto Fueled By Ramen as the worst kept secret, when the band annouced they had signed onto Fueled By Ramen and that they had been signed on for 9 months at that point (the post they annouced it in was in early August). This was at no suprise since they had been hanging around PATD a lot. I have a small theory that FBR read the Washington Post review of Aim & Ignite, and thought that fun. and PATD would be a good fit for a collab. Especially given that PATD was going back to more of their Fever roots for Vices & Virtues, and Brendon seemed to like the fun. album.

'C'Mon' was likely the first song fun. wrote under FBR, and the first time the band was properly getting to know PATD. They likely knew them due to the band being friendly with Paramore, but not properly.

"We went into the session not really knowing much about the Panic! guys," Ruess tells SPIN. "But we came out, not only with what I think is a really good song, but with a couple of really great friends that we have a huge amount of respect and admiration for." - SPIN

This is what Brendon had to say:

"We were actually just huge fans [of Fun.], and we had talked to some people in our management, and they mentioned the guys in Fun were fans of us as well, so we spent an afternoon with [guitarist] Jack [Antonoff] and [singer] Nate [Ruess], and it was awesome. It just clicked, and we all got along. It was kind of a perfect fit, and they were just so talented. We just kind of came in and arranged it with them. We have done a few shows now with it. I was a fan of The Format in high school. I’d be blasting "The First Single” on the way to school. Nate is such a talented dude. He’s got a voice, and the new stuff is phenomenal." - phoenixnewtimes (not a link to the blog, but a link to a copy and paste a fan did of the blog)

I swear to God, between Nate Ruess and Mike Viola, Brendon Urie is the King of Manifesting his own destiny.

So, 'C'Mon' was likely written and recorded around early to mid December 2009 when fun. was either in the process of getting signed or had just been signed, which makes sense with the timeline.

As a result, a beautiful friendship was born.

The song seemed to have been written by 13th December 2009 at least, and they must've been recording it around this time, because the band does imply they are in the same room.

This is giving "Mum, can I go hang out with my friends now please?" PATD visit NYC.

Cut to new year:

And then 'C'Mon' is released unto the world in 2011. It was a special exclusive release onto single vinyl, and I think the plan was to have a duet version, a solo version for PATD, and a solo version for fun. but it didn't end up happening. Those solo versions must exist somewhere though.

fun. would then also go onto open for PATD in the lead up for their second album, Some Nights, along with the band Funeral Party. I guess you can tell by the production and instrumental on 'C'Mon' that they were heading in that direction. Brendon and Nate are obviously big Freddie Mercury/Queen fans.

And then after the tour was over they still kept in contact and Brendon was still hyping them up for their second album:

This was fun.'s design, probably the one you're all very familiar with.

The PATD one seems to be the most rare one you can get, so if you have it, keep a hold onto it or sell it for a couple hundred.

And points for not using the typical quotes, like one typical quote out of the many references I could find linking to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland shows that the boys are actually fans of the book and movie in my opinion, rather than just the pop culture aesthetic of Wonderland.

So, I believe that 'C'Mon' is technically the only b-side that PATD has ever played live. Funeral Party and fun. were two of the bands that were opening for PATD on the Vices & Virtues tour at the time, and Nate would come out to sing his part with Andrew playing on the piano in the back.

(yes, I specifically chose this video for those who love to watch Brendon murder this poor keyboard, but there are many other performances of 'C'Mon' live between Brendon and Nate)

And yes, Nate and Brendon were very touchy with each other, once again, did you all think Dallon was the only one getting any action on this tour?

Last time I was a local record store in Portland, I asked the guy if he had anything by Luke Vibert since he's got some pretty niche stuff and if I remember correctly, him and I talked about Luke somewhere back in 2019 lol.... I really enjoy Luke Vibert but his stuff seems pretty localized to the UK and I've never really heard anyone mention him here in the states (though one time I geeked out because Machine Girl used an 'Amen Andrews' sample).

The guy instantly perked up at the mention, saying anyone who came in asking about Luke was a friend of his, and we (my brother and I) started to talk about his personal collection (lucky bastard) and if he'd be willing to part with any of them and all that. Offhandedly, he mentions something about a Luke Vibert and Jean-Jacques Perrey collab.

The thing about Luke is.... dude has a HUGE discography and I've never really sat down and made sure I've listened to everything. Boards of Canada is my favorite band evah and it took me like 4 years of being super into it before I even caught wind of their 'Old Tunes' tapes lololol. So I had ZERO idea this collab was even a thing.... AND WITH THE HAPPY MOOG GUY?!?!?! I've definitely been getting more into Jean-Jacques Perrey lately after it seemed like everytime I happened to hear one of his songs it was an instant favorite. This is not the guy I would of expected to collab with Luke Vibert of all people (considering Luke veers towards techo/acid and Perrey seems to have a sort of.... 'goofy' sound to it, I guess) BUT MY GOD..... WHAT AN AWESOME MIX LOL..... and the sheer excitement I felt towards hearing that these two electronic artist I like, that otherwise seem a bit niche to the overall public, fiddled away on their machines together... wahhh... it's bliss.... <3 Luke must've felt so lucky to make music with one of the pioneers of electronica ^^

Anyways, this was my favorite track from their collab. It's a pretty interesting album all together but this one was definitely my favorite! It has a sort of leering quality to it I really enjoy. Upbeat but with an undertone distorted enough that an ominous feeling can be felt. Electronica really is where the heart is at... <3

I’ve been a donghua fan since like 2017 or 2018 and God the amount of sinophobic comments you could find in any comment section is so annoying. So I get why a lot of Chinese marketing teams will be less clear about Chinese voice-acting or even cover up the fact something has Chinese people working on it (eg even though Genshin Impact celebrates Chinese culture, it’s still got a Japanese name—and even if we were to assume it has the Japanese name because it’s easier to pronounce than Chinese, that doesn’t change the fact the English Twitter only promotes the English and Japanese dub VAs).

But this doesn’t change the fact I am sick and tired of Chinese things getting their Chinese-ness erased just to appeal to global audiences, and that because of it and the sinophobia we’re not addressing by catering to them, global audiences also continue to erase the Chinese-ness of Chinese things.

It’s like a shitty-ass never-ending cycle of “let’s not market this Chinese thing as Chinese because then global audiences won’t like it and won’t want to check it out and then global audiences pretend the Chinese thing isn’t Chinese which confuses new audience members.”

Like tell me why the fuck is it so hard to find Chinese clips of Chinese shows online???

Hell, I’ve said this before but I’m petty so I’ll say it again: why do Genshin Impact dub compilations always put the Chinese as the second-last or even last language showcased? What right do Japanese and English have to be first?

I could get putting English first since most of the compilers are English speakers, but why should Japanese go before Chinese, the original language? If we wanted to be more objective and go by alphabetical order, Chinese should still be first!

Even the fact it’s highly scarce for Chinese voice-acted clips of Chinese media to be uploaded online honestly kind of upsets me, even though I get that for games it’s preferable to play in your own language. But that doesn’t change the fact it’s still easier for me to find the Japanese dub of Hoyoverse games or Love and Deepspace or Arknights etc than the Chinese one.

Other examples of this include the fact it takes me forever to find a clip from Scissor Seven in Chinese, and the anime dude-bros who watch it then claim that the English dub is better because “Chinese VAs don’t emote that much.”

You don’t even understand or speak Chinese—what do you think you know shit about how emotion is expressed in Chinese????

Sometimes I actually wish I barely understood Chinese to know what these people hear when they listen to Chinese, because apparently it’s such an emotionless and fast-paced and cacophonous and ugly language, according to many of them.

Also my main reason for advocating for calling donghua donghua instead of anime or even Chinese anime will always be rooted in this:

Calling a donghua a donghua is the easiest way to 1) root out sinophobes and 2) avoid confusion.

The fact so many people think To Be Hero X is an anime is a case-in-point.

“But it’s a Japanese and Chinese collab,” some people argue back, and that’s another case-in-point: so many people hear that it’s a collab and automatically assume some of this amazing animation must have been done in Japan, because only Japan can make such awesome animation! Even if China had a hand in it, surely the main force must have been Japan, right?

The answer is no!! As behind-the-scenes videos have shown, the entire show was animated in China! The collaboration part comes from them inviting a Japanese music artist and Aniplex being a co-producer alongside Bilibili.

So what does it say about people that they assume Japan must have helped China make something this cool??

And you know how we can avoid it? By acknowledging donghua as donghua!

Especially when a shitty company like Crunchyroll has to fucking label the Japanese dub as the “original” because they don’t, and never have, given two shits about respecting donghua (God, I sound so bitter but I’m so tired of this).

i have a personal problem with this kind of attitude. it's not a petty thing i am unreasonably angry about. there is a politics of translation and it affects one's understanding of art and popular culture/cultural geopolitics.

yes, tbhx has an unprecedented world wide release for a donghua/Chinese media and it's vital for its popularity, especially among transnational fandom spaces. Transcreated works are important for easier access. BUT, my gripe with the Japanese dub of a Chinese media WILL never be resolved. I am not talking about the quality, the issue lies in the very creation of the Japanese dub of a donghua itself. Let me give you an example.

Last year, we had an optional course called translation studies and one of the first things our professor asked was : who are the writers of A Doll's House and Waiting for Godot? He told those few of us who had read these texts closely to shut our mouth and let others take a guess. Most people answered : British writers. The texts are English texts. Because it's so famous among literature enthusiasts and when a piece of literature has a 'classic' tag attached to it, we tend to generalize and oversimplify it. So, a Norwegian playwright's original Norwegian play or an Irish playwright's play originally written in French- both get labelled as British literature. Get my point?

The anime industry is justifiably dominated by Japanese productions but when we forget to accommodate the nuances, the origin culture decays. It is, in many senses, a form of subtle cultural imperialism brought by ignorance.

People complain about Link Click's 'poor marketing' but I think Haolin was clever doing so. Even in the reviews by Indian anime bros™ I see them trying to pronounce 'donghua'. People RECOGNIZE that Link Click is a Chinese media, it's NOT an anime. You may laugh at those link click related youtube video titles saying stuff like : China is taking over anime, this Chinese anime is better than your favourite anime, PEAK Chinese anime, the best anime of 2021 is NOT Japanese?!, Link Click is taking over anime, China's hidden gem, China might have created the best anime of the year- CHINA IS IMPORTANT.

Whenever people talk about Chinese donghua- Link Click, Heaven Official's Blessing, Master of Diabolism etc are mentioned and people KNOW that it looks like anime but not really anime. It's... something... something else. This distinction is critical and essential.

Now, thanks to censorship (the Chinese version is not available on any official platform), many people think (not all people dig that deep while watching things, like come on) Spiritpact is a JAPANESE anime. Who the heck is Tanmouki or whatever. They are are Duanmu Xi and Yang Jinghua.

This is an awesome question. Thank you for asking it. I've been sitting here pondering away at how I think that would go and I've got an answer for you now, I think! Maybe.

Okay so I'll start with Nat and Penn. I feel like they would have gotten along great. Penn is a bit of a people pleaser and pretty low maintenance, so I think he would be pretty easy to get along with in most situations. Nat would be spared many a headache she now endures. I think Nat would find Penn to be a sweet little gentleman, if not a little boring. I think she would try unsuccessfully to get him into nerd culture and he would just get bored with all the complicated lore. Also, Penn would be pretty much completely useless when it comes to the challenges of Law School so, uh, not sure if Nat would finish out the semester successfully or no. Probably not. I don't think there would be any real chemistry between these two, per se, but I could see them being good friends in the end.

So that leaves us with Ev and ol' Alexander. If the other pairing was chill, I think this one would be pure chaos. Nat is pretty good at giving back what she gets. She doesn't put up with Alexander's bullshit and she sees right through him. She knows it's a bluff. But Ev? Dude, Ev would NOT be equipped for the likes of Alexander. He would crush her spirit within like a few days. Ev is way too soft-hearted for Alexander. He would size her up within minutes and read her like a book. He'd definitely make her cry and I think she wouldn't like him at ALL. I mean she'd still do her best to help him since he really needs it, clearly, but damn if she wouldn't be disgruntled while doing so. She'd be calling Trav from the bathroom for help, covered in tiny teethmarks. Poor Ev.
