Common Mergansers are moving north. Although some are seen throughout the winter, in general, they are one of the first species of waterfowl returning to, or migrating through, Vermont. Some birds stay and breed here, while many others continue their migration north. This species breeds through the northern boreal and mixed forests across the northern United States and Canada.
