Iyahshine - Unforgettable | New EP

NEW EP Iyahshine - Unforgettable Reality Shock introduces a new artist with a new EP - Iyahshine aka Damion Palmer is a talented young singer from Kingston, Jamaica, with a sweet voice & a passion for conscious reggae music. Through his musical mentor, the legendary reggae singer Fred Locks, Iyahshine connected with producer Kris Kemist from the UK based label Reality Shock to create his debut EP Unforgettable featuring 3 songs, each with a dub version. The first track Be Good shares a version with Reality Shock's recent release by Fred Locks, Jah Is Wonderful, which has been played by sounds like Jah Shaka, Blackboard Jungle & Dubkasm since its vinyl release in 2017. The next track is Flourish; the version a steppers take on Junior Byles' classic Chant Down Babylon. The vocals were recorded at Caveman Studio in Jamaica, backing vocals sung by Indra in Barbados, brass section played by Tribuman in France & all finally mixed & mastered at Reality Shock Studio, in the UK. Journal Entry: 19th May (Musical Influences)

This project combines a variety of styles of modern techno music. Beginning with dub, then melodic, then onto driving peak time techno (Beatport’s definition). The aim was to create a sense of progression throughout and take the listener on a journey with the tempo ascending from start to finish. The inspiration for creating a continuous mix was to try and emulate an open to close DJ set by beginning with slower tempos and gradually building intensity and energy from start to finish. 

Musical tastes and inspiration changed frequently throughout the writing process and had a significant influence on the productions. Tracks that incorporate styles of techno from labels such as Drumcode, Octopus Recordings and Suara can be heard on the final two tracks. Inspired by tracks like Enrico Sangiuliano’s ‘Symbiosis’ (Sangiuliano, 2018) and ‘Clutch’ by Victor Ruiz (Ruiz, 2017).

Having been massively influenced by artists like Artbat and Tale of Us, the middle section of the album consists of more melodic driven tracks. One album track in particular, called Tenuto (Current title) was heavily inspired by Stephan Bodzin’s ‘Zulu’ (Bodzin, 2015) as the main breakdown of the track has similar synth leads.

The inspiration for the intro track came after listening to a lecture by one half of the Bristol Dub group, Dubkasm. Having been introduced to their work, it inspired me to create a track around 120-122 Bpm and incorporate Dub characteristics such as a heavy use of tape delay and reverb which is prevalent in dub and dub techno music.

Journal Entry 1

Dub Track: Inspired to incorporate dub styles with techno after a guest  lecture from one half of Dubkasm, Digistep.

Having never produced dub techno before, research was necessary to learn how to utilise the classic delay and reverb style technique that is significant to the genre. Rossitter (2019) explains that the use of return reverb and delay sends are crucial and should be applied to the stabs, drones and textures. An LFO tool was implemented to modulate the frequency filters to create movement and to avoid it sounding static. Issues with unpleasant phasing occurred when applying the effect send. To combat this, an EQ was applied in the reverb return channel to filter out unwanted high frequencies (Terrano, 2007).

A creative block hindered the progression of the project. Actively listening to dub music, focusing on its core elements inspired me to develop on textures and percussion effects which proved constructive enabling the progression, creatively in the track (DeSantis, 2015, p. 24).

After receiving complimentary and constructive critique from peers during the production showcase. Refinements and the adjustments suggested will be taken into consideration when developing these sketches further.
