Watching the dungeon meshi Dub and seeing Dub v Sub discourse again makes me so tired. I mean, it's mainly on Reddit from what I've seen. Shocker.
I really don't care if someone likes subs, its their own taste. But it just boils my blood to see these people say that the English voice actors suck. That ALL English voice actors suck. I agree that the one or two dubs or VAs they actually like are good, even great. But it's so upsetting to see people insult such amazing voice actors. You don't have to like them. You don't have to like dubs in general. But another thing that upsets me is that they make other people who like subs look so bad.
Anyway, can you tell I like SungWon Cho as a voice actor a lot.

You're a dub watcher? Why?/What do you like about it?
I am a dub watcher, but I don’t hold strong feelings about it. It mostly comes down to audio processing, I like being able to focus one the visual information without having to keep up with text. But I know it isn’t perfect, and that I am watching a translated text at the end of the day. (Ex: I’m in Wano right now so there’s all those moments of like, shrug guess I just don’t have the cultural touch points for whatever that joke was).
But if I’m rewatching an episode on my own I’ll usually put on the sub. I think there’s a lot of fun extra information that can be gained from it and there’s a few jokes/puns I didn’t get until hearing it in context. (Ex: I know there’s a lot of back and forth on Yao’s Franky compared to Seitz’s dub, but honestly what it comes down to is that they’re making two different jokes with the signifiers of their accents depending on what culture you’re coming from. If Dub Franky kept the trait of rolling his R’s, I listening in English wouldn’t necessarily know what information was trying to be conveyed with that character tick. So instead they give him the beauty of the exaggerated SoCal accent because they can get more niche once in English. You lose a bit of the joke, and it takes something on the surface level away from the Super, but that’s why it’s good to look at additional sources too)
I wouldn’t say I LIKE the dub particularly, though I am fond of it. When The One Piece comes out I probably will have some reservations toward the new cast. My partner and I were watching 4kids compilations last night (an era I was not allowed to participate in at the time because of idk gender I think) and I was thinking about how interesting it is how much power just changing the audio track does.
I know Americans can get really obnoxious about this kind of stuff, but I genuinely think there’s no shame in watching it in the language I comprehend in the same way I think it’s fine to watch it in Spanish and Portuguese and German. I think it’s actually really cool that this text is translated into so many languages.
Spielberg has talked before about how Lupin III’s Castle of Cagliostro works as universal inspiration because you don’t need to know what’s happening through the dialogue alone, I think one piece is similar. Universality is a big reason why it translates so well. The bing bongs will bing bong no matter what language you speak. But I can’t watch the bing bongs if I’m reading, so there’s a give and take hahaha.

hate fans of literal translation (subs). the op manga will have a weird tl of something and then people will misinterpret based on the translation without knowing the intent of the translation itself. and then people will be like but dubs/localization/translating based on INTENT suck?
i don't know how to win with these people. this wouldn't happen if you just stopped thinking you know better than people who are paid to translate based on intent and are literally professionals.
dont get me wrong dubs can be literally translated too and sound stupid like the modern nge dub but it's become this conversation equating dubs with localization and subs with direct translation because thats the most notable difference between the two- and i dont blame anybody for not watching the dub of one piece considering the entire warcrime around that and how long it took to correct.
but if you are a fan of one piece and haven't checked it out I highly suggest you do- generally you will get the most understanding out of consuming both translations. It's so close to actually catching up with current episodes and there's literally no better time. and i would absolutely kill for every main va.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Episode 1 "Dub-Uncut" (ENG Dub w/ JP OST) WIP #1 | Ladies & Gentlemen!
Soooo, after plugging away at this little project for more than a year, I'm pretty sure, I think I'm just about done with it--a "dub-uncut" take on ARC-V episode 1's dub! Like when I worked on those 5D's "dub-uncut" episodes, I find that there's some potential in the 4K/KCM dubs, but overall it's hampered by the dub's music [which especially hurts for ARC-V given the awesome score by Kotaro Nakagawa], some writing choices, and other little oddities/cuts. (I also did plan on trying to sub ARC-V up until Crunchyroll took the wheel on that, and I did want to do something with the work I'd put into prepping the OP/EN for that, lol; I think I actually started this a little in early 2022 at some point, but due to my SSD dying on me in October of that year, I pretty much lost everything and had to dig through what little backups I did to not start from scratch (I had to restart this though). This has also been an ongoing idea, since I did do a dub-with-JP-OST take on episode 10's first 10-or-so minutes years back.
Of course, since working on that version of episode 10, we now have things like UltimateVocalRemover out there to help with things like this, as well as Duel Links or Cross Duel (RIP) for better/more accurate takes on different lines. So, after using UVR to isolate episode 1's audio in both versions, I got to work piecing the dub back together with the JP OST/SFX, using lines from later episodes and Duel Links as helpful to make the dialogue more in line with the original; I'd been chipping away at it mostly for the past year, but worked a bit more on finalizing it and leveling the audio over the past few months to get it off the backburner, lol, along with revamping my subs for BelieveXBelieve and One Step (which I'll be showing off separately).
For this clip, I made Gongenzaka properly say his Monsters' names while tributing them by pulling audio from 138's dub (and one other); Yuya's "Ladies & Gentlemen!" and "Quick-Play Hippo Carnival" lines are from DL, and I found an AI-voice-generating site that had the voice of the Narrator from Pokemon's dub, which I thought would fit for the Action Duel narration before the OP. [Also, yes, I will be correcting every instance of "Zuzu" to "Yuzu" using lines with "you" in them because why.]
Lemme know what you think! I'll likely post another couple progress videos while I apply some finishing touches, and I should probably be posting about the full thing in the next week or two.

Oh oh I've got an idea for a poll, here's one for the dub enjoyers
If you are going to be mean about the dubs in general just simply don't do that

imagine if monsters speak one of these eldritch languages where you know it’s not your language but somehow understand it anyway. they go on the surface and someone makes a comment about all the different accents people have around the world or the funny different ways people say things and whoever is nearby is just??? you mean languages??? this results in Alphy’s being for nether sub or dub. she doesn’t understand why they’re doing the same thing again but wording it different but with just minor enough changes that it bothers her, or are so different they completely change the context of the scene vs have the original but with subtitles that have the same issue as a dub. someone has to explain why this is a debate for humans at all
This is genuinely an incredible take. I love this. Maybe that could explain monsters possibly understanding Wingdings totally fine but humans hearing god only knows what. Fax machine from hell noises

hey im interested in getting into ygo do u have any recs or recommended orders of reading/watching theres a lot from the looks of it on anilist so i was wondering about your preferences o:
ANON I ABSOLUTELY DOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm only about halfway through the sequels (i just started arc-v) so I'm not like the most knowledgable person in the world but I can give you my personal recs. COME CLOSER!!!!!
First of all, every yugioh series is totally independent from each other (sort of - gx is set directly after dm and leans on its worldbuilding quite a bit, and 5ds takes place in the same universe as well though a bit further in the future, but you can watch them on their own with no problem) so if there's one in particular that grabs you there's nothing stopping you from jumping straight to it - that being said I've been watching all of the anime in release order (ygo dm -> gx -> 5ds -> zexal -> arc-v (i am here) -> vrains -> sevens -> go rush) and I've been enjoying it a lot. I also wouldn't recommend watching arc-v in particular without having watched the ones before it as it probably won't really have any impact for you. Now for specific recommendations (in order) !!!! SORRY THIS GOT REALLY LONG.
yugioh manga - START HERE !!!!! the original story by kazuki takahashi. high school boy inherits an ancient magical artifact containing a spirit that's really, really good at playing games (and inflicting psychological torment on bullies). I have to give it a warning for some shonen-typical creepiness towards female characters in the early chapters, but it's REALLY worth reading and it's a story that's so near and dear to my heart. this is the fastest and easiest way to start loving yugioh. Its worth noting that the original ygo manga is the ONLY manga (afaik) that tells the same story as its anime + i haven't read any of the others aside from a little bit of the gx manga, so the rest of my recs are anime-only
(optional) yugioh season 0 / 1998 / toei - a one-season anime based on the early manga chapters. if you like the horror vibes of the manga you'll enjoy this a lot. really fun 90s animation with a killer soundtrack, but generally not considered """canon"""
yugioh duel monsters - this is the one most people watched as a kid. it's an adaptation of the manga, but with most of the early chapters cut out so as to get straight to the card games + some extra arcs added in. this is most people's favorites and the most popular! you can also watch this in lieu of the manga, but you will be missing a LOT of the early story or experiencing it in condensed form (and the plot of ygo dm is already patchy At Best).
yugioh gx - direct anime sequel to ygo dm. boy goes to gamer school to become the next king of games + high school shenanigans ensue. gx is a really charming, goofy romp with a super lighthearted s1, an interesting s2 and a shockingly engrossing s3. s4 (the last 25 episodes or so) never got dubbed in english so if you're a dub enjoyer like me you'll have to switch to subs to get the full story
yugioh 5ds - direct sequel to gx, though further in the future than gx was to dm. card games on motorcycles are real and so is class warfare and the surveillance state. iirc this is the only yugioh anime that was rated 4+ - it has a slightly more mature tone but there's still plenty of lighthearted fun to be had. Really strong s1 with a second season that falls off a little bit, at least to me, but is still absolutely worth watching. s2 is missing a number of episodes in the english dub, so again if you're a dub enjoyer you will find yourself quite confused by the end. its probably worth watching s2 entirely sub-only (something i still need to do)
yugioh zexal - the first of the sequels that is possibly set in a different universe entirely (or just the really distant future). middle school boy gets a magic necklace from his dad that has an alien inside. zexal is a lot of peoples favorites and now that I've watched it I GET IT. Really strong story + pacing from beginning to end and a really endearing cast of characters. It's silly and goofy and fun but DAMN DOES IT COHERE.
yugioh arc-v - the first of the sequels that is DEFINITELY set in a different universe entirely. this is the one I'm watching currently so i don't have much to say about it yet GET BACK TO ME ON THIS ONE. this one boy's dream is to become the greatest clown who ever lived (tragic) (inspiring)
INHALES LOUDLY. that was probably more info than you wanted BUT I HOPE THAT HELPED AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT? again I recommend reading the original ygo manga first and i think that will give you a good idea of whether you are down with the yugioh silliness or not. It's important to remember that this is a very silly anime series about card games but like. As long as you can buy into the worldbuilding and accept that this is just How Things Are in the world of ygo, it's suuuuuuuch a fun world to sink your teeth into.

Reason why I love Dub over the Sub?
The characters feel like people in the dub rather in the sub.
Like from what I have seen, the sub more or less treats them like characters rather than people. They don't sound like actual people, but characters. It isn't bad, but it isn't good either.
In the dub, call their dialouge cringe all you like it, but it feels more natural and they even give them flaws, minor or not. Heck, there was a whole ass conversation about how hot dogs should be cooked and one of the characters straight up said, "Seriously, you are triggering me." Hell, Yusaku in the dub once burned down Kolter's kitchen.

It actually doesn't matter if the anime is the original japanese or dubbed in english because without subtitles I can't tell what the fuck is being said.

Something that really bothers me is people being mostly sub watchers and then seeing a dub episode and complaining that the characters are "totally butchered". That's because there's a whole show of building that character in a slightly different flavor, y'all.
Actually, correction, something that really bothers me is people complaining about the yugioh dubs.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Episode 1 "Dub-Uncut" (ENG Dub w/ JP OST) WIP #2 | The Action Duel!/BelievexBelieve (Upload Without Copyright-Proofing Bars)
Another look at my ARC-V Episode 1 "Dub-Uncut" take! This time, taking a look at a much-improved prologue and my final fully subbed version of BelievexBelieve, which I might've previously shown off when I was going to attempt ARC-V subbing a few years back but has been revamped since (largely because I lost my final sub file after a drive fail in 2022, but thankfully I had an earlier version of this and the ED subs I'd done to work off of; huge shoutout to Jake759 on NAC for setting up the stylings for the credit subs to replicate their lighting-up--though I wish I still had the title card subs he styled for me 😭 I had to redo that from scratch and it looks good, but not as good as he'd set it up lol). The revamped OP subs include my revamp of the edit with Sawatari's cards being hidden as V1 of this OP with that was never released textless officially, and I also still had my edit during the chorus to translate "KABA CARNIVAL" sliding in under the Hippo Tokens to "HIPPO CARNIVAL."
For the prologue, my previous teaser used an AI'd line using the voice of Pokemon's narrator (under 4Kids), but that had admittedly been more of a placeholder/proof-of-concept; over the past week, I looked into commissioning a voiceover artist to record the lines instead--for this and the rest of the prologues in ARC-V!--and I'm very happy with the results here. Shoutout to @mattsindt over on Fiverr for his services! 😄
Lemme know what you think! I'll be working on some more finishing touches, so expect some more teasers for the next while as I get it all polished.
