Prince's ex Charlene Friend reveals Prince and his half-brother had 'cocaine diet'
Tumblr media
For Charlene Friend, reports that prescription pills found hidden in an Aleve bottle at Prince's Paisley Park estate could have been counterfeit drugs containing the powerful narcotic Fentanyl, is yet another painful reminder of how the late singer hid his drug use from those around him.
The 44-year-old interior designer says she met Prince in 1989 and dated him for two years and that she was an 18-year-old virgin when she met Prince.
Prince's ex-girlfriend, 44, has insisted she had never seen Prince do drugs. But in the decades that have elapsed since their split, she says she's begun to understand just how much of his life he kept hidden.
"He would sometimes stay up for five days at a time without sleep, food, or even water, going nonstop back and forth to the studio," recalls Friend. "I had to sneak in catnaps to keep from passing out from exhaustion. The first time that happened, I asked him, 'How do you do this?'"
Prince, says Friend, just smiled, stared deep into her eyes and said: "Angel food. Food of the spirit, not of the flesh."
When he finally did allow himself to sleep, Friend recalls that he would cover the windows with aluminum foil, crank the heat up to 80 degrees or higher and make sure the room was pitch-black.
"He would be shaking all through the night," says Friend.
Several years after their split, Friend was speaking with Prince's half-brother Duane Nelson, who had spent time working as head of security at Paisley Park, about how the singer was able to stay awake for days at a time.
She says Nelson, who died in 2013, told her that Prince's stamina had nothing to do with "angel food" and everything to do with narcotics. '"We call it the cocaine diet,'" Friend says Nelson told her.
"It was shocking to me to hear that," she says. "He hid it so carefully. I never saw him take even an aspirin. He seemed so health conscious, always taking vitamins like echinacea and goldenseal."
She added, "There were no gray areas. One day he would be in a good mood, and the next day he would be in this very deep, dark mood. Part of that was just his personality, but I now realize that the drugs enhanced that."

You are carrying the entire urban fantasy genre on your back. I just need you to know that your mind-blowing settings and worldbuilding in your fics have changed my brain chemistry, and have been formative in how I read fiction in the past few years
That’s all, I just wanted u to know how truly transformative and poignant ur work is 💕
Aww, my zesty lil rat, that is such an amazing thing to say! Thank you so much <3 I’m so glad you like what I write and that it’s had an impact on the way you read.
The truth is, whatever measure of excellence I’ve achieved is owed to the urban fantasy giants on whose shoulders I stand (or, more accurately, at whose feet I prostrate myself) to wave my little fic flag. If you enjoy my stories there’s a pretty good chance you’ll enjoy them even more, since they’re why I love it and why I write it.
So! In no particular order (but roughly older to newer) I give you a list:
The David Sullivan series by Tom Dietz – I think these were my first true urban fantasy. I haven’t read them for a few years (err, decades?) but they are indelibly etched on my brain.
Charles deLint – I have, and have read, everything by him, but my first was Moonheart. His Newford series in particular is grand.
The Bordelands series, edited by Terri Windling– Borderlands is a series of shared world anthologies (as was the style at the time) and a few full length novels, including Finder by Emma Bull and Elsewhere and Nevernever by Will Shetterly. If David Sullivan lured me in, Borderlands was the food I ate that doomed me to dwell here forever.
The Last Hot Time by John M Ford – is this part of the Borderlands series? No. Could it be? Hell yes!
War for the Oaks by Emma Bull (hot damn, this is still one of my faves).
The Book of Night with Moon and its sequels by Dianne Duane
Tanya Huff - The Vicki Nelson series, its follow up Smoke series (vampires in Toronto and Vancouver, respectively), the Keeper’s Chronicles, and the Enchantment Emporium series (again, all her stuff is incredible, just not all urban fantasy)
Christopher Moore - anything set in our current world, particularly Practical Demonkeeping (my first! Got it for two bucks in the bargain bin; it has since cost me several thousand dollars), the Death Merchant Chronicles, Pine Cove series, and Vampires in San Francisco (I mean, it’s all good, but some of it’s not Urban Fantasy.
A Lee Martinez - anything set in our current world (ditto the above, it's all good). Helen and Troy’s Epic Road Quest is my fave.
Tentatively adding David Prill and Bradley Denton, although they're more urban weirdness (maybe magical realism?) than urban fantasy. They were formative, however.
The John Dies at the End series by Jason Pargin (aka David Wong) (maybe more horrorish than urban fantasy)
TJ Klune – The House in the Cerulean Sea, its sequel Somewhere Beyond the Sea, Under the Whispering Door, In the Lives of Puppets
Anything by Seanan McGuire, but her main series are: October Daye, InCryptid, and Wayward Children. Also, MIDDLEGAME and its sequels. (She also writes as Mira Grant if you want smart scary – start with Feed. So good.)

"Sweet Mama”
From the album Unshaven: Shaver Live At Smith’s Olde Bar released in 1995. Shaver was famous Texas singer/songwriter Billy Joe Shaver and his guitar-slinging son Eddy joined up with bassist Keith Christopher (Georgia Satellites) and drummer Craig Wright (Steve Earle). Harp master Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson) blows some mean stuff on it, as well.
This was part of Billy Joe’s mid-’90s “comeback,” one that pretty much lasted until his death in 2020. He helped shape the Outlaw Country music, with his songwriting contributions to Waylon Jenning’s Honky Tonk Heroes of particular note.
He also recorded for a few labels in the ‘70s and ‘80s but nothing ever really went anywhere. In fact, this song was the lead-off track for his 1987 Columbia effort Salt of the Earth. That album was produced by Eddy and also featured him tearing it up on guitar. If this tickles your fancy, there’s also a Live From Austin, TX available that is killer bee.
The Allman Brothers Band cut this song as the final track to their 1975 album Win, Lose, or Draw. That was the final album of the band for a couple of years, as all sorts of issues were tearing the band apart, notably the deaths of Duane Allman and Barry Oakley (bass). It’s a pretty spotty effort and was the last to feature bassist Lamar Williams and keyboardist Chuck Leavell.

Brianna also revealed some startling and disturbing information when she read aloud her father Duane's journals in a video. In the journals, Duane alleges that he and Prince were sexually abused by their stepfather and forced to engage in sexual activity with other brothers by the stepfather. However, Prince and Duane are no longer here to verify or deny these claims. Some point to Duane's purported mental illness as a reason his journals cannot be trusted in the first place, while others say even mentally ill people have lucid periods and that his problems could stem in part from childhood trauma. What we do know is Duane was employed as Prince's bodyguard for many years until an eventual falling out. Duane was only 53 when he passed away in 2011. His brother Prince would follow him five years later.

THE ALLMAN BETTS FAMILY REVIVAL*, THE FACTORY, 25 NOVEMBER 2023
*The Allman Betts Band (Devon Allman and Duane Betts with maybe Berry Duane Oakley, John Ginty, Johnny Stachlea, John Lum, Alex Orbison, R. Scott Bryan) with TAL WILKENFELD and Jimmy Hall, Luther Dickinson, Jackie Greene, Anders Osborne, Larry McCray, Mike Zito, Maddie Schell, Ghalia Volt, Ally Venable, and Cody Dickinson)
I had passed on this show when my rock’n’roll proposed this one (mostly being extremely selective about such shows—last one was Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Labor Day 2022, before that Electric Hot Tuna at the Sheldon Fall 2019 and Phil Lesh and all of Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Festival at the local barn that summer, but also cost, the holiday weekend, and city provincialism as the venue is out in west West County). But one of us felt under the weather and miracled me (I’ll pick up his dinner and maybe even Jameson tab at Jazz St Louis sometime, sssh). So I went anyway and gladly.
Devon Allman is local (as are several members of the core band as well as guests Maddie Schell and Mike Zito) so he started this sprawling tour at home. The Factory is relatively new—swanky and comfortable, perhaps too much so—a bigger Pageant. But it was an old crowd, so good parking and easy out starts to matter. This is what rock’n’roll has become, but so has this fan.
And this fan’s rock’n’roll is largely nostalgic. I got to hear a wonderful repertoire very competently done. Devon Allman’s voice evokes his father’s, but sometimes Jimmy Hall handled the biggest tunes (Statesboro Blues which followed a tune—one of the band’s new ones?—and effectively kicked off the show and the Whipping Post closer). Duane Betts can sound like his father while Johnny Stachela does very nicely with the slide parts. I probably wouldn’t pay $30 to see them at a smaller venue, but that’s not what justifies this as a bigger ticket tour.
It’s an all-star revue with guests coming out to sing/play a tune or two. Thus, Jackie Greene (one of the people whom I regretted foregoing when I didn’t plan to go) played acoustic guitar (Greg’s old Gibson) and sang Melissa and then added a slide solo to One Way Out and Luther Dickinson (another one I was really glad to see) tore up the first set closer Dreams while opening the second set as part of a tune I didn’t know Sailing Away. He was also significant for Come and Go Blues (sung by Maddie Schell who played mandolin). Larry McCray had to plug in three different guitars while singing Soulshine which triply underscored its gospel roots. Anders Osborne sang Ramblin’ Man with gusto but left the soloing to Duane Betts.
Ally Venable did I’m No Angel and Ghalia Volt played slide and sang Pony Boy Blues. So there were deep cuts—or at least later career cuts, including No One To Run With Anymore.
The huge treat was to see TAL WILKENFELD who was both her wonderful self and, in doing so, reminded me/us how important Berry Oakley, Allen Woody, and Oteill Burbridge have been for these tunes. She just burbled under everything, not quite soloing but driving things with inventive idea after inventive idea.`At that—or any—Hot Tuna, I would frequently punctuate my notes with Jack! For this one, there are several Tals! She sang Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More adequately but Blue Sky and Ramblin’ Man stood out even as I often watched and listened for her. She had a full blown start from scratch solo that pushed her speakers to their limits that then, duh, kicked into Whipping Post where she continued to be spectacular. She elevated the entire gig.
I don’t quite get the economics—how much does Larry McCray get for singing Soulshine? Or Cody Dickinson for being the fourth (!) on the Midnight Rider all hands on deck closer? Or Jackie Greene or Luther Dickinson? It makes sense as a one off Thanksgiving weekend party at Devon’s, but they’re off for a dozen shows. Maybe on the road the absence of Schell and Zito will open up solo and singing space for others. The extravaganza as such generates interest in a way that even the Allman Betts Band with Wilkenfeld and, oh, Hall wouldn’t. But the core band is an effective tribute act and their own tunes, the opener maybe and definitely the first two tunes of the encore, are solid.
I don’t regret Jessica being in there but that probably took the In Memory of Elizabeth Reed slot. Otherwise my wishlist was met.
